Welcome to our new podcast, Success NPs. We are your hosts, Sandra, and Jackie, two board-certified NPs, moms of littles and we want to empower your NP journey from school to practice. Listen as we chat with this week with Sunny Khangura, she graduated from nursing in 2005 where she worked in various areas such as orthopedics and trauma and palliative care. She went on to complete her Master's Degree and graduated in 2012 as a Nurse Practitioner. Since graduation, Sunny has worked in primary care and mental health and also worked as a director of health for a large non-profit organization. Over the last several years, Sunny has been working as an NP in Neurosurgery. Since graduation, Sunny has also developed numerous NP resources and courses as well as preparation courses for OSCE Exams. Farewell to the Doctor Nurse Podcast! I wish the DNP a bittersweet farewell after 2 years of solo hosting and interviewing the most amazing guests. I hope you each enjoyed being a part of our community of freedom seekers!

This week I spoke with Erica Komisar who is a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst, parent coach, and author. With 30 years of experience in private practice, she works to alleviate pain in individuals who suffer from depression, anxiety, eating, and other compulsive disorders. By helping them live better lives and have richer, more satisfying relationships, she assists them in achieving their personal and professional goals and living up to their potential.

A graduate of Georgetown and Columbia Universities and The New York Freudian Society, Erica is a psychological consultant bringing parenting and work/life workshops to clinics, schools, corporations, and childcare settings including The Garden House School, Goldman Sachs, Shearman, and Sterling and SWFS Early Childhood Center.

Erica is also the author of the book Being There: Why Prioritizing Motherhood in the First Three Years Matters and has appeared on major media networks such as CBS, ABC, FOX, and NPR. She is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post,New York Daily News,and FOX 5 NY. She is a Contributing Editor to the Institute for Family Studies. Her upcoming book, Chicken Little The Sky Isn’t Falling: Raising Resilient Adolescents in the New Age of Anxiety will be released in Fall 2021.

She lives in New York City with her husband, optometrist, and social entrepreneur Dr. Jordan Kassalow with whom she has three teenage and young adult children.

Wilson is a physician assistant and assistant professor. He completed a dual Master's in Physician Assistant Studies and Public Health at Touro University California. After PA school, he completed a PA Educator Fellowship and Cancer Care Fellowship before working as an inpatient hematology/oncology APP. In addition to his clinical and teaching roles, he also worked as an oncology informatics specialist and educator in health tech and IT. He is currently working on various passion projects including financial coaching and running The Finance Hospital.

Wilson focuses on financial education and 1:1 coaching. He enjoys teaching student loans, personal finance, and investing topics!

Stephanie is a practicing nurse practitioner. She completed her Masters in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner program at Samuel Merritt University. While she was in school, she continued working full-time as a blood and marrow transplant and oncology nurse. After finishing her NP training, she began working as an inpatient oncology APP. She recently completed her Master's in Business Administration and is working as an outpatient oncology nurse practitioner. She currently splits her time between clinical work, real estate investing, and traveling.
Stephanie helps with the operational and business side of things. She is also our real estate investing enthusiast!

Dr. Annie DePasquale graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia with her medical degree. She completed her Facility Medicine Residency program at Georgetown University in Washington DC. She founded Collaborating Docs in 2020 by Dr. Annie who is a Board-certified Family Medicine physician who first-hand saw an unmet need of her NP colleagues who needed a supervising physician to practice independently. When Dr. DePasquale realized how hard it is for NPs to find a collaborating physician, she knew she had to do something. The hoops the nurse practitioners and physician assistants had to jump through to start practicing were too exhausting for anyone to handle alone. Dr. DePasquale benefited greatly from the mentorship of NPs throughout her career, especially when she was a green new grad, so she is very committed to giving back to the community that helped her so much. Her mission is to make it easy for NPs to help more patients by having the freedom of choice. Collaborating Docs has helped over 1500 NPs match with collaborating physicians.

She graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida in 2007 and started her healthcare career as a registered nurse with Riverchase Dermatology. In May 2012, in the course of her Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) degree, she obtained the highest scholastic achievement in professional nursing, the Doctorate of Nursing Practice. During her advanced nursing preparation, Dr. Simmerman gained practical experience working directly with nurse practitioners in multiple clinical environments and has even developed programs for work culture competence for dermatology practices. Stacey Stenenga was born and raised in a small town in Michigan. Stacey joined the Air Force to see the world. After 14 years of living overseas and in multiple different states, Stacey moved to Colorado to settle down closer to family. Despite being a critical care nurse for 11 years, her income was nearly cut in half from relocating. In 2018, she found the book “Set for Life” by Scott Trench and became a devout student, learning as much as she could about real estate investing. Stacey has since acquired 4 duplexes and is a passive investor in syndication. Stacey’s love for real estate investing stems from supplementing her salary as a full-time nurse. Christian Costazza, is a RN BSN who was born in Italy in 1984. He grew up with a pretty challenging childhood, losing his dad when he was 10. He was bullied in middle school, went straight to work after high school, and decided that he wanted to change his life by pursuing his BSN in Nursing. He graduated in 2012 with a BSN. He opened the first nurse-led business in his hometown and decided that he wanted more, so he moved to Ireland with basic English skills. After a few rejections, he chose to study and landed a job in NICU. After a while, he moved to England, where he became a cath lab nurse and went through all the roles, from RN to Director of two departments. He then started looking into the personal development space after having a period of burnout in the middle of the COVID pandemic. He decided to move to the US last year. He is currently based in Florida and works on a 1:1 basis with RNs to support them in navigating/avoiding burnout.

Introduction to guest: Melanie Graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and has primarily worked with the Pediatric Population for 4 years. Graduated with my BSN in 2018 after not getting into the professional program for the first time. She took that semester and regrouped, but took an opportunity to study abroad with her Nursing College to Kenya, Africa. She was there for 2 weeks doing community outreach, education, and being one with the Kenyans. FUN fact - her professor who took her is from Kenya and took them to the ‘hut’ she grew up in. She even got to meet her parents and have a meal. She also didn’t pass my NCLEX the first time. Sat there for the full 6 hours and answered all 275 questions. She got my report back and was nearly passing in almost every single category. She took it again and passed in 78 questions! She got her first job as a pediatric nurse at the bedside on an Acute Care floor. They primarily specialized in GI/GU, Endo & Pulm, but saw almost anything under the sun. They had a lot of chronic patients, lots of tubes, and longer stays. Melanie did that for almost 4 years before pausing bedside to support her fRNd’s in creative ways with Mel's Crafty Corner.

Dr. Jessica  Chung was born in the great state of  New  York.  She attended NYC College of Technology, received her Associate's Degree in Nursing in  2009, and graduated on the Dean’s List for academic excellence.

After graduation, she worked as a charge nurse for a nursing home and as a Nurse Case Manager for a  home care agency, both in Brooklyn,  New York. She received an opportunity to relocate to the sunny state of  Florida in 2010,  to work at an acute care hospital.  The year following, she obtained her Bachelor’s  Degree in  Nursing from Utica  College.

Jessica worked at various city hospitals, gaining experience as a registered nurse in various clinical areas such as medical pre and post-operative, emergency, and post-partum care. Wanting to further her education, she obtained a Master's Degree in nursing from South University with a concentration in Family Nurse practitioners and was board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She practiced as an FNP in primary, adult, pediatric, and geriatric care. In 2018, she received her Doctoral degree in Nursing Practice, from Samford University.

Dr. Chung was inducted into the prestigious Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society on May 3rd, 2018. Dr. Jessica Chung is also heavily involved in the ministry of her church, New Life Tabernacle, and UPCI, and constantly aspires to help and influence everyone she meets. She has been known to emphatically state that she does not look at being a healthcare provider as just a career but as a God-given gift and calling.

In 2019, one of Dr. Chung's dreams came true when she opened her own private practice, J.C. Healthcare & Associates in Tampa, FL. She provides a wide variety of healthcare services to patients of all ages. Due to her vast knowledge of healthcare business start-ups and private practice management, in 2020, Dr. Chung launched the International Business Association for Nurses where she helps nursing professionals and other healthcare professionals become entrepreneurs. She is an educator of students, a researcher, a prolific speaker, a healthcare provider, a business owner, and one that has a heart and passion for mentoring students of all academic levels, in hopes of them obtaining higher education and professional success.

Aisha started earned her BSN from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013, and began her nursing career in the VICU stepdown in Virginia Beach. Six months later she changed jobs and moved to the Cardiac Surgery ICU to start her journey to become a Nurse anesthesiologist. Ashley is the Founder of Working Mom Notes, a supportive platform for working mothers.  She struggled to find resources as she returned to work after having her first baby.  Her goal was to connect with a few working moms and share “notes” with one another on how to navigate life as a working mother. Ashley knows that being a mom is hard in and of itself.  Add in the stresses of balancing a job and the combination can really take a toll. Nena Hart is a Registered Nurse with a Masters in Nursing Administration and has a history of transforming stagnant operations struggling with their staffing and systems into thriving regions with high-performing teams.

Through more than a decade of post-acute care leadership, Nena has seen the negative effects of staffing instability on census growth, quality and survey outcomes. Nena was able to grow the census in her own region from 700 to over 1500 patients and opened 10 denovo locations, all in under 3 years.

She is a Certified Lean Healthcare Professional (CLHP) and is the Owner of Hart Healthcare Solutions, which helps post-acute care organizations take back the operational health of their organization, improve efficiency, stop the vicious cycle of critical staffing, enhance survey outcomes, and ultimately improve patient care.

She worked her way up the corporate ladder for over 10 years and was finally recruited to her "dream job" as a CEO in Hawaii, only to be fired five weeks later.
Left with a huge new lease and no income, she started her own consulting and coaching company, working from home, matching her CEO salary in half the hours, in her leggings.

She now helps other exhausted nurses embrace entrepreneurship and love nursing again with her podcast and coaching business Nurses Making Waves! She lives in Hawaii and enjoys reading, cooking, doing puzzles with her kids, and going to the beach with her family during "normal" office hours.

Tiffany Gibson, MSN-ED, RN, NPD, CPN graduated from Temple University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s in Public Health. As a new parent and overwhelmed by exhaustion, Jayne left behind her job in corporate sales, ready to fully embrace her new role as a mom. Kirby was born and raised in Chicago, and a proud deep dish pizza enthusiast. She is a lover of travel, food and lifelong learning. Her journey in nursing started in 2006 as a registered nurse in Phoenix, Arizona working on a trauma unit, where she witnessed numerous times the intersection of trauma and mental health symptoms. At the age of five, Andrea was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord that causes pain, muscle weakness and paralysis, and she was using a wheelchair full-time by twelve years old. Inspired by her experiences with nurses, she received her nursing degree from the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. Andrea became the first registered nurse in a wheelchair in the state of New York, and she devotes her career to helping others with disabilities live healthier lives whether seated or able-bodied. Andrea was crowned Ms. Wheelchair New York 2015, and utilized her title and platform: "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Access," to promote her message and belief that people with disabilities can live a fulfilling life. As an advocate and activist, she has won national recognition over the years, including being named New Mobility's Person of the Year (2021) and the inaugural Craig H. Neilsen Visionary Prize Winner 2020. She has also been featured in Unite Spinal, HomeCare Magazine, Apple's iWatch campaign, Yahoo, and Forbes.

Christa Rymal, RN, MSN is The Point Retreats Founder, Co-Owner & CEO. She has worked in the healthcare industry for over 20 years in emergency medicine, cardiac care, orthopedics, primary care, diabetes education and endocrinology. Cynthia Thurlow, founder/CEO of the Everyday Wellness Project, a MSN NP from John Hopkins in 2000 and author of Primal Eating and Intermittent Fasting Transformation: The 45 Day Program. She is also the host of the Everyday Wellness Podcast.

Sarah Michelle, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, FNP-BC runs a test prep company for primary care nurse practitioners that centers around confidence building and anxiety dampening. When she was preparing for my her board exam, she felt that there wasn't a board review out there for someone like herself that suffered from crippling anxiety. So she made one with these two things as the focus and gave it to all of her classmates for free. It then evolved past any of her initial ideas or expectations. Education is her passion, and she has a Master's degree in Nursing Education in addition to a Post Master's certificate for my FNP. She has taught in a variety of settings- starting as a tutor in undergrad, began teaching actual nursing classes just a couple of years into being a nurse, and this is definitely now her largest "teaching stage."

Ashley received her Bachelor's degree from Florida State University with a degree in International Affairs with a minor in Religion. She began working in the insurance industry and obtained a Masters in Healthcare Administration to make herself more marketable for the company. Even with multiple degrees something deep inside her heart was yearning for something far greater than what her employer could offer her. She wanted to care for people. She obtained her a Associates' degree in nursing in 2012 and started her nursing career in the NICU taking care of tiny babies! She then received a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Georgetown University, where her dissertation focused on the integration of palliative care screening of neurosurgical patients on admissions.

Currently, she works as the Chief Advanced Practice Provider of the Preanesthesia Testing Department and Senior Advanced Practice Provider in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In addition, she is the co-creator and Chair of the Doctoral Nurses Collaborative, a group that joins DNP and PhD prepared nurses throughout her current healthcare system. The Doctoral Nurses collaborative provides mentorship, scholarship, and elevation of evidence-based practice. Dr. McCamey was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians back in 2019 and was recently elected as the Vice-Chair of Palliative and End of Life Care Network-where the focus is on education, raising awareness, of palliative and end-of-life care in CHEST and clinical practice.

Dr. McCamey is the founder, CEO, and president of DNPs of Color, Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit nursing organization that builds community for nurses of color through networking, mentorship, and advocacy to increase diversity in doctoral studies, clinical practice, and leadership.

Her passions are mentoring nurses, DEI, and antiracism in nursing and palliative care in critical care. In her spare time, she enjoys time with family, dancing, traveling, and long rides on her motorcycle.

Savannah Arroyo is the Founder & CEO of Networth Nurse™. She works Part Time as an RN at a beautiful hospital here in Los Angeles, California. She is also a Real Estate Investor.

When she first started working as a Registered Nurse, she naturally found myself working in leadership positions. She served on committees, helped lead process improvement initiatives and worked to problem solve critical situations. Shortly after she started working, she went back to school to receive my Masters of Science in Nursing Leadership and Administration. She was under the impression that the only way to build wealth was to pick up extra shifts at the hospital – until she discovered Real Estate investing. Real Estate investing is a powerful tool to build wealth. After a great deal of research, education and team building she started investing in Real Estate. She currently operates Real Estate Syndications, primarily for Healthcare Professionals. She discovered there is a huge gap in financial education for high income earners. The majority of Nurses that she knows are making good money, but are still living paycheck to paycheck. Savannah realized there was a huge need for resources, community, and education, which led to the creation of Networth Nurse™.

Hannah C. Jaeger BSN, RN, ALNC, CCRN, TCRN, PCCN is the owner CEO of the Blue Ridge Medical Legal Consultants. She is the legal nurse for her company, and she also works as an outpatient surgery nurse.  She finished her legal nurse consultant training in the spring of 2020 just as COVID hit. Kristina Chamberlain, CNM, ARNP, IBCLC graduated from the University of Washington Midwifery Program in 2005. She became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant that same year. Kristina holds a license as a Certified Nurse- Midwife and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and has focused her career on lactation and breastfeeding medicine for the last 10 years. Kristina believes that breastfeeding success is directly related to the support someone receives and she believes everyone should have access to a lactation consultant. Currently, she is the Clinical Director and Lead Faculty of the UC San Diego Extension Lactation Program. Her passion is training future IBCLCs so that this kind of support is offered to everyone who wants it. She also continues to work with breastfeeding dyads in the clinical and telehealth setting.
