La Toya Abram-Payton  

Over the years, we have had conversations with close to a hundred authors, but this interview is historic because for the first time, I am in the same room as the author I am talking to.  She is a kindergarten teacher, an entrepreneur, an author, and just an all around fascinating friend, La Toya Abram-Payton.

La Toya Abram-Payton started her educational career at Nash Community College and received a dual degree-Associates in Arts/Education.  She then attended Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina, where she received a Bachelors in Social Work.  She then attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and received her Masters in Marriage and Family Counseling.  She is licensed in Birth -Kindergarten and taught kindergarten for five years.  I hope you enjoy the conversation.

News from Texas Parks and Wildlife

This week, a federal grand jury returned indictments charging six Cuban nationals from Houston with illegal trafficking of migratory songbirds, violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Lacey Act. The joint investigation led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement Special Agents and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Texas Game Wardens led to the seizure of more than 300 illegally trapped songbirds.

National Public Lands Day & Mother Neff State Park

Celebrate National Public Lands Day this Saturday on 25 September. It is the nation's largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. Established in 1994 and held annually on the fourth Saturday in September, this celebration brings out thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. NPLD is also a “Fee-Free Day”—entrance fees are waived at national parks and other public lands.

AUSTIN – Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has partnered with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB), Association of Texas Soil & Water Conservation Districts, Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Wildlife Association and Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association to highlight Soil and Water Stewardship Week. The week is centered on the importance of voluntary land stewardship in Texas. The statewide campaign runs April 25 through May 2 and the focus this year is “Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities”.

Forest landowners are an important part of Texas agriculture and the stewards of this resource. They work closely with their local Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS) district office to implement conservation practices that promote the health and sustainability of forests and forest ecosystems. These privately-owned forests contribute significantly to the Texas economy and provide numerous environmental and social benefits.

To truly have a healthy forest, proper management and conservation is needed. Thankfully, many forest landowners in Texas are implementing beneficial conservation practices such as strategic tree plantings, prescribed burning, brush management to remove diseased trees and invasive species, native grass management, wildlife management and even bee propagation to stimulate pollination. In certain instances, livestock can be included as part of a prescribed grazing plan to strategically manage the leaf litter, soil, and underbrush in a forested area, which can ultimately assist in preventing wildfires. Without these sustainable management practices, problems such as soil erosion, insect and disease outbreaks, invasive species encroachment, declines in biodiversity and even catastrophic wildfires can occur.

Trees filter air, reduce ambient temperatures, absorb carbon dioxide, and produce oxygen. They help conserve energy by casting summer shade and blocking winter winds. Tree roots hold the soil in place and fight erosion. Trees absorb and store rainwater, reducing runoff and sediments after storms, which also helps recharge groundwater supply and prevent flooding.

Essential products made from trees include paper products and lumber. Trees also offer habitat and food to birds, insects, lichen, fungi, mammals, and reptiles. Finally, trees increase our quality of life through a relaxing effect, reducing stress.

The Inland Fisheries Division is responsible for managing the state's diverse freshwater fisheries resources. The goal of this management is to provide the best possible angling while protecting and enhancing freshwater aquatic resources. The resources include approximately 1,100 public impoundments covering 1.7 million acres and 191,000 miles of rivers and streams. These resources are used by about 1.21 million anglers 16 years of age and older whose fishing activities provide great benefit to the Texas economy through an estimated $960 million per year in direct angler spending on food, lodging, transportation and equipment.

Exposure to airborne hazards during military service is a serious concern for many Veterans and active-duty service members. VA established the Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry (AHOBPR) in 2014 to document these types of exposures and help researchers better understand potential long-term health effects.

The VA estimates that over three million Veterans and active-duty service members are eligible to join the registry. In this interview, Gary sits down with Dr. Patricia Hastings, who will share how participating in the registry can help Veterans proactively monitor their own health, get connected to the care and services they need – and help other Veterans along the way.

Dr. Patricia Hastings is the Chief Consultant for VA Post Deployment Health Services within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Dr. Hastings previously served in the Army for 33 years, retiring at the rank of Colonel. She is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who has completed a Disaster Medicine Fellowship with an emphasis in public health. A graduate of the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Science in Des Moines, Iowa, she also worked as a paramedic and registered nurse prior to attending medical school.
