Wed, 10 May 2023 - 1h 06min - 80 - Episode 29 - Lady Diana Mukpo
This episode features Jaymee in an extremely rare conversation with Lady Diana Mukpo, wife of The Venerable Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, on the 36th anniversary of his Parinirvana ("death"). Lady Diana had originally invited Jaymee to her home in Florida to record the episode in person, but she found herself unexpectedly hospitalized nearing the recording date. To Jaymee's astonishment, Lady Diana remained committed to their recording on this day, and the two were able to meet for the first time over zoom and record this conversation from her hospital bed on one of the most significant days of her life. Coming fresh off the heels of Jaymee finishing Lady Diana's incredible book Dragon Thunder: My Life With Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Jaymee intentionally chooses to direct the focus of this episode less on the powerful teachings or magical events of Trungpa Rinpoche's life that usually fill the spotlight, and more on the human story behind two of the most significant and controversial/misunderstood figures in Tibetan Buddhism reaching America. Jaymee and Lady Diana discuss whether or not Trungpa Rinpoche suffered from PTSD, and you'll hear about a moment early on where she rerouted his attempt to commit suicide. This episode shines spotlight on the brilliant integrity and determination of Lady Diana - a young woman of 16 facing the patriarchal dark ages of emotionality and equality, only to find an indestructible karmic calling as Trungpa Rinpoche's partner, best friend, and lover. The contributions she and Trungpa Rinpoche have made toward establishing a path of non-aggression for western society is unparalleled, and the merit truly beyond measure. This is Part One of their talk together, with a follow up planned in the coming months. The episode features authorized uses of "Won't You Come Home" and "Memorial" by Devendra Banhart, who began this Trungpa Rinpoche adventure for Jaymee by introducing him to Shambhala Publications founder Samuel Bercholz, now a friend, guest of multiple episodes and major supporter of this podcast. Wed, 05 Apr 2023 - 56min - 79 - Episode 28 - Parvati Markus
This episode chronicles the hard earned spiritual unfoldment of the great saint, author and editor Parvati Markus, who's first acid trip (Golden Sunshine/Owlsey acid) in 1969 led her directly to a first encounter with a freshly anointed Ram Dass, beaming with light at his fathers farm. Parvati became Ram Dass's personal secretary for two years, helping him edit his spiritual classic Be Here Now while saving up money to eventually travel to India with her heart set solely on meeting Neem Karoli Baba, who she believed to be the source of Ram Dass's inner light. After an arduous journey traveling through India for the first time in 1971, she contracted hepatitis while traveling, she eventually made it to darshan with Maharaj-ji, and reads her journal notes from her first encounter with him. Parvati is a Love Serve Remember rebel, who for 7 months lived with Maharaj-ji alongside her early cronies Ram Dass, Krishna Das, Mirabai Bush, Rameshwar Das and a young Raghu Markus - who Parvati spontaneously married at the behest of Maharaj-ji on this trip, presiding himself over the ceremony. Parvati then had the incredible honor of becoming Maharaj-ji's "private secretary", where she experienced countless first hand account miracles and a lifetime's worth of wisdom and grace, which she emanates. Parvati is the author of Whisper In The Heart, and Love Everyone, both books inspired by the wisdom and presence of Neem Karoli Baba, and has been a contributing editor for 50 years of a range of Love Serve Remember authors. Parvati is an inspirational woman who exhibited impeccable devotion, respect and selfless service throughout her spiritual journey, and shares stories generously and in great detail throughout this episode. Thu, 30 Mar 2023 - 1h 16min - 78 - Episode 27 - Susan Piver
Susan Piver is the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, an internationally renowned Buddhist meditation teacher and public speaker, and former record industry professional, having worked at legendary independent Hip-Hop label Tommy Boy, as well as Rounder Records where she helped Alison Krauss achieve a Platinum album. Susan has been a guest on Oprah twice, has been a speaker at Harvard and Google, and founded the worlds largest online only meditation center - The Open Heart Project. But as she shares throughout the course of this highly engaging conversation with Jaymee, all of these accomplishments pale in comparison to her eventually discovering the writings and teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (posthumously), which indirectly led to a life-altering encounter with Shambhala Publications founder Samuel Bercholz, who became her Tibetan Buddhist teacher (and still is to this day). Tue, 21 Feb 2023 - 1h 21min - 71 - Episode 24 - Sam Bercholz Drops The Mic
"I may be crucified for this... but happily!" Sam Bercholz is the Founder and Editor In Chief of Shambhala Publications, was an attendant, student, close friend and constant collaborator of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's for the last 17 years of his life, publishing virtually Trungpa's entire literary catalog. He co-hosted a weekly public radio show with Alan Watts (produced by an Anton Lavey devotee), and Sam personally introduced Trungpa Rinpoche to Alan Watts ("Alan was Trunpa's literary hero.") He shares the details of their first meeting, and the bombshell first impression Alan Watts made on Trungpa Rinpoche ("That was a horrible disappointment"). Sam also made the introduction between renowned Zen Master Suzuki Roshi and Trungpa Rinpoche, which became a lifelong friendship between the two most significant Buddhist teachers in North American history. Sam also grew up with Alan Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Lex Hixon, was the original mover and shaker of the spiritual boom in the Bay Area in the late 1960's and 70's. He even hosted His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (considered the living Buddha of the last 100 years) on his only visit to North America in 1976. Sam tells mind-blowing stories of what it was like for him to be the "designated driver" for Trungpa Rinpoche's early acid tests with his students ("best job ever") and how Trungpa never appeared to be affected by the LSD or the alcohol intake. Sam shares (for the first time publicly) his feelings about the controversial offshoot Shambhala Buddhism, which he reveals was created years after Trungpa Rinpoche's death, without his personal blessing and against many of his students support. "I tried to stop Shambhala Buddhism from happening. I thought it was a mistake to create a new religion, because Trungpa Rinpoche was not into starting new religions." Sam also shares about his relationship with legendary poet Jim Harrison, and towards the end of the podcast, fields questions from Jaymee's student Tim D'amico and his partner Lacee. Sandy and Jason of Enid And Edgar Vintage in Ojai, CA are salt of the earth people who were once high school sweethearts. Their vintage shop is a one of a kind shopping experience, set outdoors underneath a gigantic oak tree, next to their modest home where they home school their children, and live a slow, highly intentional existence, rich with quality time and meaningful connection. Enid And Edgar has always felt more like a church of nature or a vintage community gathering space, with a loyal congregation of thrift devotees who flock to bask in the atmosphere of radical acceptance created by Sandy and Jason. So naturally, when Jaymee learned that Sandy and Jason and the fam were going to be closing their Ojai doors for good to relocate to Nevada City in northern California, he asked if he could record a farewell episode of the LITA podcast live on location during Enid and Edgar's final day of business in Ojai. Sandy and Jason, who are historically very private people, share their incredible true life story here for the first time, which will undoubtedly be one of the most heartwarming stories you've EVER heard, period. The episode begins with Jaymee interviewing their 16 year old son, Jonas, who helps run the family business, and has started a vintage business of his own. You'll hear the sounds of the city swirling through the conversation, hawks flying above, friends off mic coming to share their appreciation, and some of the best damn parenting and relationship advice you'll get on planet Earth. "Dirty Saints" are what Jaymee calls people who spends a good portion of their life in various forms of abuse and intoxication, who at some point face their demons by doing deep internal work on themselves, and then spend the rest of their lives searching for others to bless with the gift of identification. Mike "One Shot" Coulter is the definitive "Dirty Saint", a man who bleeds emotion and famously "won't do anything in life that doesn't have a chance of breaking my heart." An incredibly talented therapist, craftsman, and songwriter, Mike can now add author to his list of credits, having nearly completed his first book, a 500+ page collection of autobiographical writings that he describes more as the "secrets list" he "would've rather died than ever share with anyone". Mike speaks (as usual) with a raw sincerity with his ongoing struggle with body image, sex and drug addiction, and how hard it has been to live knowing how many hearts he's broken. But he's found a reason to live and share every bit gold he finds within his former wretchedness. As he puts it: "people are the spiritual intervention that have got me here." Tue, 04 Oct 2022 - 59min - 57 - Episode 16 - Lama Lhanang Rinpoche
On September 19th, 2022, the Venerable Lama Lhanang Rinpoche, a particularly magical and important Tibetan Buddhist Lama, spent a full day in Jaymee's home in Ojai, CA. recording this podcast, performing healing ceremonies and offering longevity blessings for hours to the many dozens of attendees that day. Jaymee was honored to serve as Lama's attendee throughout the day and witnessed firsthand Lama's tireless drive to give each person who sought his wisdom quality time with him, most of which transpired from Jaymee and Lacee's bedroom. Lama barely drink water, ate nothing and needed very little rest for 10 hours straight. Jaymee's received direct teachings and blessings from Lama throughout the day, some of which are being shared with you now on this podcast. The interview is truly a masterpiece of wild information. For starters, Lama explains what ghosts are comprised of, and the potential karmic repercussions of having emotional attachments via a 5 minute Norm Macdonald style joke. Lama dazzles Jaymee with the most comprehensive forensic analysis Jaymee had ever read (or heard) regarding the elemental process of death, and the mechanics of how each living beings momentum of karma accumulated over countless lifetimes transcends death. He does a George W. Bush impression, and gives a particularly funny answer to "Lama, what's your thoughts about psychedelics?" Lama (rolling his eyes): "Nowadays, everybody is a shaman." At the close of the episode, Lama erupts into a deep harmonic blessing chant without warning, which will give you chills. Lama Lhanang currently resides in San Diego, CA, and directs the Jigme Lingpa Center. LOVE IS THE AUTHOR: produced, edited, and hosted by Jaymee Carpenter. Wed, 21 Sep 2022 - 56min - 56 - Episode 15 - Victoria Roberts
After Jaymee's mother, artist Victoria Roberts, had survived a horribly abusive childhood by establishing a foundational relationship with God being Love, she arrived in London in 1971 at the age of 18 and was instantly swept into the inner circle of rock legends The Who and The Faces. The first time Who drummer Keith Moon met Victoria at The Roundhouse in London in 1971, he confessed his innermost feelings of guilt over the accidental death of his driver and bodyguard Neil Boland just months before, a rare showing of vulnerability from the late rock legend. Victoria taught Ronnie Wood from the Faces (now The Rolling Stones) how to ice skate around that time, and was with The Faces when they trashed Alice Cooper's after party at the legendary Rainbow Theatre while he was still performing on stage. A year later, after listening to Stephen Stills first solo record in 1972, she simply imagined herself hanging out with him... two months later, Victoria was searching for an unlocked window at Stephen Stills Boulder, CO home to climb through, hellbent on cleaning the house, which from the outside looked trashed and partied in heavily. What'd Stephen do when he arrived home a few days later when he found her as an intruder in his home? He gave her a job for the next year as his live-in assistant/housekeeper. Victoria's life is an exemplarily demonstration of how thought can physically manifest, and how one can radical heal themselves and others through self love and living a life of honesty. She shares her multi-layered process of healing herself from the unspeakable horrors of her youth, how an accidental psilocybin trip at 16 years old played an integral role, and how on multiple occasions in life she talked herself out of being raped by discussing her spiritual healing with each looming aggressors. Victoria's life is also a great example that you may find your artistic voice in late in the game, and how simple and beautifully sweet it it all can be. He is a devotee and direct disciple of Neem Karoli Baba (Maharaji), whom Raghu lived with in India for 18 solid months alongside Ram Dass and Krishna Das in the early 1970's. Raghu is the chief storyteller within the Love Serve Remember satsang, and spends most of his time joyfully recounting deep and meaningful stories about his friend and mentor Ram Dass, so Jaymee took time to ask about Raghu's early life in Montreal for a change. Raghu shared what it was like having his first transcendent experience as a teenager in a jazz club watching John Coltrane play "My Favorite Things" right in front of him, how he and his friends used to sneak off to watch films that were banned by his teachers, and how his early psychedelic experimentation led straight to his first job as a program director of CKGM-FM in Montreal, where he would fatefully encounter Ram Dass as if it were all intricately designed. This episode is full of first hand accounts of what it was like to be in the direct care and company of Neem Karoli Baba, a miracle being who the majority of humans have only experienced through Ram Dass's many lectures, his service work, and his smile... all of which Raghu confirms was Maharaji pouring through his dedicated student. You'll also hear the story of the time Ram Dass felt like an imposter, and the extraordinary pep talk Maharaji gave him on the spot, as well as the time Maharaji taught Raghu, a nice jewish boy from Canada, how to "meditate like Christ". Jon "Vasu" Seskevich has been a trailblazing nurse clinician and primary disciple of Ram Dass's for 50 years. After two years of obsessively reading and re-reading Be Here Now in the early 70's while hitchhiking and practicing kundalini yoga, Jon endured a difficult LSD experience and took a shot in the dark writing Ram Dass a letter to ask his advice in processing the bad trip. Much to Jon's surprise, not only did Ram Dass write him back, but his return letter set in motion a lifelong teacher/student relationship between the two that directly led to Jon creating his own revolutionary career and curriculum in compassionate nursing care at Duke University between 1990-2019. Jon is a breathtakingly genuine and humble sweetheart of a man, a record keeper of the highest order, so in love with the world and earnestly devoted to cultivating path of the expansive Heart. For the Love Serve Remember heads and hardcores, this episode is an absolute gold mine - chalked full of mind-blowing first hand accounts of Ram Dass sewing the seeds of Love in the West, as well as the full circle experience Jon had being Ram Dass's nurse on one of his last pilgrimages to India in 2004. Samuel Bercholz is the Founder and Editor In Chief of the legendary Shambhala Publications, original publisher of an entire library of spiritual classics by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Pema Chödron, Shunryu Suzuki, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche (to name a few), and was an early student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche's. Samuel is the genuine article mover and shaker of the early Buddhist scene in the US, and what George Martin was for The Beatles, Samuel has been for the Dharma flourishing in the West (though you'll hear he considers himself more of a Forest Gump). You'll hear the unbelievable stories of Samuel as an 18 year old co-hosting a weekly San Francisco based radio show with legendary Zen philosopher Alan Watts called "Adventures In Consciousness", and the last epic hang Chögyam Trungpa had with Alan Watts on the day Alan died. Samuel then blows Jaymee's mind by describing Chogyam Trungpa needing to perform an exorcism for Alan Watts a month later, claiming Alan "doesn't know he is dead" and "is stuck" in the bardo. You'll hear about Samuel's friendship with legendary clandestine chemist Owsley Stanley in San Francisco, who synthesized a drug that left Samuel high for two weeks straight. As if this isn't enough, Samuel has flatlined twice in his life, and in his most recent book "A Guided Tour Of Hell" (as well as on this podcast), Samuel shares the gory details of his experience, what he describes as feeling like an eternity in a hell realm, followed by the surprising pain of returning to his body ("leaving is easy; coming back is incredibly painful"). Tulku Orgyen Rinpoche is a Vajra Master within the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, and Jaymee's "root guru". Born in the Hidden Land of Pemaköd, a sacred place well known to Himalayan Buddhists, Tulku Rinpoche was recognized as a reincarnate shortly after his birth by one of the most notable Tibetan Buddhist masters of the 20th century, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, and began formal training as a toddler to fulfill the role of his incarnation. Tulku Rinpoche later founded the Odiyana Institute in Santa Barbara, a center where people can come to learn more about Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Jaymee wanted to use this opportunity to ask questions he had never heard asked of enlightened masters, such as "Have you ever been in love?", "what's the most miraculous thing you've ever seen?" and "what're your thoughts on depression, anxiety and suicide?" This conversation is one of Tulku's first recordings and his first ever podcast, and Jaymee has always felt Tulku's speech carry's blessings that transmit beyond the words spoken, so listen closely to this timeless advice on how to attain inner freedom, passed along in an unbroken chain from the lips of the teacher to the ears of the student for over 2600 years. Tue, 28 Jun 2022 - 1h 09min - 48 - Episode 8 - Francisco Mazza - Director, The Krishnamurti Center
Francisco Mazza is the Director of the Krishnamurti Center in Ojai, CA. How did this disappointed, disenchanted youth growing up nihilist in the streets of Mendoza, Argentina, find his way to a genuine spiritual unfoldment? Would you believe surfing, ambient music and industrial bands like Ministry and Nine Inch Nails could lead one to the teachings of Krishnamurti? Francisco shares how his unique connection to the world renown spiritual teacher was forged, and how the journey beginning as a humble student led to being a Director of one of his Centers. Jaymee and Francisco cultivate a new friendship over a conversation that at times borders on poetry, with a generous smattering of hard earned spiritual gems, Brian Eno lyrics and frequent eruptions of laughter. Wed, 08 Jun 2022 - 16min - 45 - Episode 5 - Christopher Noxon
Christopher Noxon is an author, artist and contributing journalist for The New Yorker, Details, The New York Times Magazine, and Salon. He has authored three books, one of which "Good Trouble: Lessons from the Civil Rights Playbook" recently made headlines after it was placed on a banned book list in Virginia Beach as a prop of conservative political theatre. His first book "Rejuvenille" landed him as guest on Good Morning America and The Colbert Report in the same day, and Christopher shares what it was like hanging out with Stephen Colbert "out of character" in the green room. But most importantly of all, Christopher shares notes from navigating the recent profound loss of his 20 year old son Charlie, who tragically passed away on their family ski trip together in 2020. Christopher shares the difference between trauma and grief, the beauty he experienced mourning within the jewish tradition of "sitting shiva", and the not so subtle way Charlie recently snuck into Christopher's art unbeknownst to him. This episode is a resource for learning how best to support friends or family who are experiencing profound loss, how you don't have to "move on" to move forward, and how Unconditional Love transcends the impermanence of form. Wed, 08 Jun 2022 - 1h 02min - 43 - Episode 4 - John Dennis
John Dennis is one of Jaymee's favorite people on the planet. The "Quentin Tarantino of vintage", John is a true historian and die hard fan of thrift, style and decay, and is a dedicated practitioner and believer in the art of up-cycling. Through his wildly successful vintage company Sam Roberts LA and his brick and mortar Valley Of The Moon in Ojai, CA., John expresses himself boldly through the clothing he designs and repurposes. A true relic himself and genuine article California hippie with a heart of gold, John tells the story of the first half of his life being chewed up and spit out by the rat race, and how the relationship between he and his son became the biggest inspiration for seeking a new path truer to his heart, smothered in dust and dripping with beauty. This conversation is hilarious and heartwarming, between two bearded freaks who are living their dreams after losing it all. Fri, 13 May 2022 - 1h 28min - 36 - Episode 1 - DEVENDRA BANHART
When Devendra and Jaymee get together, they instantly become two children deep at play, bursting with positive energy, ceaselessly driven to expose the interconnectedness of life while utilizing Tibetan Buddhism as their primary navigation system. This episode is less of an interview and more of a natural long form conversation between two people who love each other. Jaymee and Devendra open up about overcoming their (former) heroin addiction, their experiences in recovery, how they found the Tibetan Buddhist path and eventually became immersed, fueled most recently by their shared obsession with the writings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. They also share the common themes of their ayahuasca experiences. Plus: the brilliant concept for Devendra's forthcoming album (near completion), the mind-blowing synchronicity that began their relationship, and how they both feel their passion for practicing Buddhism is equalled only to the feeling of falling madly in love. *Closing music by J.
