- 422 - #275 - Stolen Womanhood
On Sunday 5th of November 1978, at a little after 5:30pm, two women stood at a bus stop on Sydney Place in Kensington, SW7, waiting for the rush hour bus. Having been close friends for decades, there seemed to be an odd friction between them, and although their issue was of a personal nature, within minutes, one would be a wanted criminal on the run, and the other would be shot dead.
But why did Alvada Kooken murder Margaret Philbin?

1st August 1970, 20-year-old Mary McCormack of Limerick was found strangled in her ground floor flat at 85 Talgarth Road in Baron’s Court, W14. With no signs of a break-in, the police suspected it was either a client who she let in, or a tenant with a key. But did the Police convict the right man?

On Tuesday 11th August 1936, at roughly noon, in the basement flat of 7 Roseford Gardens in Shepherd’s Bush, 66-year-old widow Elizabeth Fortescue was smothered to death, as her attacker ransacked her flat. Given the violence used against her, the Police suspected “she had died at the hands of a violent man”. But how true was that?

Thu, 31 Oct 2024 - 1h 02min - 419 - #272 - Red Mist
On Sunday 31st July 1949, just before midnight, Michael Martin unleashed a violent attack on a defenseless 53-year-old prostitute known locally as ‘Mona’. To the press, it seemed like an all-too-familiar story of a destitute woman who was brutally murdered by a horny drunken punter, but with time and infirmity catching up with all of us, this anonymous streetwalker’s death marked the end of an amazing criminal.

On Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th of August 2021, having recently been released from prison, Lee Peacock brutally murdered his ex-partner Sharon Pickles and her partner Clinton Ashmore. But was this due to jealousy, or a drug-induced paranoia, or jealousy, being stuck inside their own ‘vicious circles’.

Two weeks after the murder of veteran taxi-driver Frank Everitt, a 39-year-old black marketeet called Reuben Martirosoff alias 'Russian Robert' was murdered in an almost identical way. Only this didn't look like a meticulously planned execution, it looked like the epitome of incompetence.

This is Part One of Two of The 'Taxi Driver' Murders.
On Thursday 18th of October 1945, the bloodied body of veteran taxi-driver Frank Everitt was found wedged on the bridge in a hole at the pump house on Lambeth Bridge, which he could hardly fit into. At first, it seemed like he was either stuck or sleeping, but was this just a crude attempt to conceal a corpse, or a meticulously planned execution?

Shakira Spencer was a loving mother-of-two, who lived to be loved and gave it back in spades. But when her “best friend” became her worst enemy, her life no longer became her own, she was reduced to being little more than a slave, and across the weekend Friday 9th to Monday 12th of September 2022 – out of boredom or spite - her so-called friends subjected her to what the judge described as “sadistic cruelty”.

Inside, two terrified women screamed, as John Steed, the M4 Rapist shot one of his hostages dead. But why did it end this way?

Only this isn’t just a story about obsession, this is the tale of a family’s five-year battle for justice, with the evidence being missed owing to a fatal mistake.

Thu, 16 Nov 2023 - 1h 08min - 332 - #232 - Finally, a home
On Friday 23rd April 1960, 23-year-old Elaine Baker finished her shift as a striptease artiste at the Peeperama on 47 Frith Street in Soho. It was an odd job for her to do, as she was so quiet and shy. Fifteen minutes after her arrival back home at 19 Tredegar Square in Bow, East London, she stabbed her boyfriend to death. But why?

Thu, 09 Nov 2023 - 1h 02min - 331 - #231 - The Good Samaritans
On Sunday 31st of July 1904, at roughly 12:30am, a fight broke out near the doorway of 23 Greek Street in Soho between two young men; Edward Devanney and Raphael Ciclino. Amidst a mele of fists and drunken yells, although its witnesses spoke of the shouts they’d heard and blows they’d seen, it seems strange that no-one saw the truth.

Thu, 02 Nov 2023 - 1h 04min - 330 - #230 - Pieces
On Monday the 25th of February 1935 at 2:30pm, an unusual parcel arrived at Platform 19 of Waterloo Station. At 21 inches long, 9 inches wide and deep and weighing close to two stone, the train's cleaner found a severed paid of legs. And although to some this was just a piece of lost property, it would lead to one of the strangest criminal investigations in the Met Police’s history.

Later dying of his wounds, no-one knew why he was there, few knew that had happened and no-one knew who had attacked him or why. And although the Police would bring his killers to trial, this little-known case would only lead to more questions than it answered.

Thu, 12 Oct 2023 - 1h 07min - 327 - #227 - Silly Little Boys
In the early hours of Tuesday 9th of March 1954, two immature young boys called Ted & Ian chose to get rich quick, by breaking into the Aban Court Hotel (19-25 Harrington Gardens in Kensington, SW7), tying up the night porter, and robbing the hotel of its haul of cigarettes and cash. It should have been a simple robbery for two simple boys…
…but being so inept, their inexperience led to a good man’s murder.

On Saturday 22nd of June 1968, a petty thief tried to steal a small amount of cash from Taj Mahal at 21 Romilly Street in Soho.
