Spanky talks to Kath Taylor, Chief Executive of Maritime NZ about the Rena boat disaster as well as Catherine Savage, Chief Executive of Maori Tertiary Education Orgnaisation Te Tapuae o Rehua on her submission to the Central City Draft Plan meetings and talks about movie "Shark Night" with movie reviewer Andrew Todd.

We spoke to good ol’ Garry Moore this morning, the God Father of our fair city because we really wanted to hear his opinion ob Bob Parker’s media attention during the quake aftermath. There was a report which was amended, written by the senior civil defense manager at ECan that said Bob’s media presence contributed to a crisis situation being depicted by the media. ALSO we wanted to find out a little bit more about the ‘community’ he lived in for 10 years.

Next up was a Dr. of psychology - William Helton - who’s been looking into dogs of all shapes and sizes and comparing their intelligence, or at least working out whether size has anything to do with the ability to be trained. It’s kind of hard to explain, so have a listen

We spoke with some very interesting people this morning, a Professor and a Doctor. First up with the Professor, John Blunt who has been involved in researching sponge growing off the coast of Kaikoura, that has remarkable properties that could be used in the fight against cancer. Anything to do with moving forward in the battle against the Big C is worth talking about in our books, so have a listen:

We also had a really interesting talk with a gentleman by the name of Gordon McKenzie. Now he belongs to a group called The Aetherius Society, who for lack of a better explanation (and everybody basically wants to know) believe in aliens. Oh there’s much more to it than just that, so you should definitely check out the link to their website, but one thing in particular which caught our interest was their walk up Mt. How about Phil Goff ay? He’s a good man, and as per usual on a Wednesday morning he called at his allocated time (8:15am) for a chat about all things current in politics. Today we covered the Pike River Coal liquidation, why Labour has pulled its support for the Government’s Maori backed law change of the foreshore and seabed issue, further evidence of Pansy Wong’s business dealings conducted on tax payer’s money and the racial spat between Trevor Mallard and Tau Henare. Juicy stuff!

Also on the show this morning was that bonny wee lass, Sam McSorley, our resident medical herbalist. Today Sam brought in her dog Basil who was VERy cute and they talked to us about alcohol. Is there a particular type of booze to avoid during the festiv season, how much is too much? What is it doing to our bodies? Have a listen and take it easy this Christmas ALRIGHT?

we had a yarn with a fella by the name of Tony who works at Place Makers in Motueka - the recently awarded ‘Best Town in New Zealand’. We wanted to speak with someone who wasn’t involved with promotions or any marketing to do with the town, someone who was a salt of the earth kind of person who lived and worked there and knew what went into make the place so special. And here he is, ladies and gentlemen. Tony.

So the highlight of the show (apart from a visit from Spanky) this morning was a chat with Daisy from Kitty Daisy and Lewis - a family band from the UK who are playing at Al’s Bar on the 14th Jan. Also on the show this morning I had a chat with Kiwi explorer Mike Allsop who’s on a crusade to track down mysterious artifacts - the hand bone and part of a skull of a Yeti. There is a long and ingrossing story behind the theft of the bones, which Mike is determined to get to the bottom of, and return them to their rightful owners. I spoke with Michael Bennett who directed a wonderful New Zealand film called Matariki, it had its world premiere at Toronto Film Festival which is HUGE! Michael’s background is in writing/directing in TV an short films so having his first feature debut over in Canada is really exiciting. The flick stars some notable Kiwi personalities as well as Don McGlashan as musical director and composer so Matariki showcases New Zealand music, actors (both established and up and coming) as well culture. Also on the show this morning I had a chat with Anton Heyrick who runs a company called Christchurch Paranormal Investigators NZ. Last time we spoke he was looking into a restless ghost at the Jailhouse Hostel in Addington and now Anton’s got a brand new team with flash new gear and is ready to bust some ghosts. Or at least make sure they’re getting the attention and respect they deserve.

Well I was at it alone this morning, as Spanky is off for a few days in preparation for his ordination this coming Sunday when we will emerge THE REVEREND Spanky Moore. Very exciting! Anyhoo, I think the show went OK and thank you to everyone for getting involved and all your encouraging texts. Right, on the show this morning Spanky had a chat with his dear Dad (who I had the pleasure of meeting face to face last week when he dropped off some amazing organic lamb). We talk with Spanky’s Dad usually when we’re changing seasons, and especially now we’re heading towards a formidable drought. Never quite sure why this segment was called Let’s Get Agro, sure there’s a good pun there, but Mr. Moore doesn’t sound like an agro kind of guy. Oh well have a listen and hear a little more about the Moore’s farming history and how Spanky and his brothers basically put a halt to it all.

Also on the show this morning, we had a chat with the CEO of that powerful organisation NZ Pork about the abolition of sow crates - or at least the phasing out of them, with the plan to have them all gone by 2015. Sam McIvor is the man, he gave us NZ Pork’s feeling about the move which is all well and good, but then just at the end of the interview he very subtly (as subtle as a punch in the face) segued into informing us how we could eat pork for every meal of the day. Nice one Sam, we need more marketing staff like you!

Big show today, probably most notable was the announcement of this year’s Best Demo Competition winner. It’s an event for producers or musicians who have recorded, mixed and produced a finished track of any genre. Anything goes but you must primarily have had involvement at one stage during the writing and production of the work. The judge of the whole comp is the one and only Recloose joined us on the show to put us out of our misery and announce the winner. WHO is Ed Muzik aka James Dann!! Have a listen to what is was about the track that has now won him a trip to Auckland Redbull Studios to lay it down proper with Recloose. A BIG Congrats Ed!

Next off the rank was a man by the name of Jason Northover, now he is the manager of the MAC or Military Activity Camp based right here in Canterbury. You may have seen a lot of press about this programme lately, but we wanted to skip the politics and get straight to the nitty gritty - what actually happens at these camps? Obviously they receive a bus load of down and outters, young repeat offenders, but do that yell in their faces and break them with constant starjumps or crawling under barbed wire fences in the mud? Let’s find out:

It was all very last minute but we managed to get hold of CCC councillor Yani Johanson on the old dog ‘n bone for a discussion about Dave Henderson being made bankrupt. Looks like Dave won’t be offered the oppoortunity to buy back his properties that the Council bought off him, mainly due to the quite significant fact that he is now bankrupt, so what to do, what to do… The CCC has a lot to answer for really, $17 million down the gurgler.

Brightening up our morning and I know yours too, was Labour leader Phil Goff joining us on the show for his fortnightly catch up. We wanted to know his thoughts on the Pike River mine royal commission enquiry, what he hopes will come from that and also if he knew of Nandor’s anti mining blog. We asked Phil what he thought of Wikileaks too, because he was Foreign Minister for New Zealand once upon a time.

You have most probably heard about Wikileaks in the media lately, so we had a chat with Scoop.co.nz co-editor Selwyn Manning about the whole issue - a little history behind the site, the founder and the latest leaks to be published.

Also on the show this morning we had a catch up with Green Party co-leader Dr. Russel Norman. First up was his thoughts on mining in New Zealand of course after the Pike River tragedy, during this very sensitive time, is he tempted to push for an emotive anti-mining message? Also covered was Nick Smith’s announcement of the $2.1 billion ‘community environment fund’ - is it all it’s cracked up to be? Russ thinks not…

What a weekend! Saturday night at the Dux de Lux saw the Grand Final of Roundup 2010 band competition which was HOT. Barney Hodges did a fine job taking care of the MC duties as the top 5 bands from this year’s fierce competition battled it out for the title. So much talent! Finalist this year were: Sandfly Bay, Lupus Lunar, Mmdelai, The Guest and Valdera - such a mix of genres and all very tight. In the end though the judges decision was made and after much deliberation behind closed doors, The Guest came out victorious. We had the lads from The Guest in studio this morning to tell us of their win and what’s next, have a listen:

This morning I featured a segment entitled Self Massage. I’m not even going to go into, but if you’re feeling tense, or stressed there IS a way you can relax and I believe my system will help you. It kind of slipped under the radar a little, but this weekend just gone Oamaru was host to the Raleigh 20 Nationals. One man from Ashburton, one retro bike riding thoroughbred stallion of a cyclist by the name of Stephen Cook escaped slips, dodged fallen competitors and out cycled conditioned triathlete to win first place. I had a chat with Stephen this morning to find out what his secret was, what training went into the race and what's next for this Ashburton man. Oh yeah, he took out the Healing race too!

Hey well, what a sweet show we had this morning! Bit of a breakfast party in the studio with our mates Keith Preene, celebrity chef Jonny Schwass and Maria Walls popping in for some fun and awkward moments. Next up we spoke with Cornel de Ronde who is the leader of the GNS team currently undertaking the logistically daunting task of mapping the bottom of Lake Rotomahana. This of course is to search for signs of the famous Pink and White Terraces, which vanished after the 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera. We learnt a little more about the unmanned sub marines they’re sending down and also if there are any colour photos of the terraces, because we sure can’t find any!

This morning we had our medical herbalist Sam McSorley in studio for a chat about those symptoms that effect all of us frequently called PMS. Ah yes, PMS that mysterious condition that befuddles many a man and plagues many a woman. If you or your loved one has been affected in any way by PMS then take a listen to this podcast, Sam explains it a little further and gives some handy tips on how to deal with it a bit better. All natural of course!

This morning on the show we had our ever popular segment: Monday Conundrum with our ethics guru Mr. Mike Grimshaw. Today’s ethical conundrum was “You enter a quiz and the winning team will be awarded $10,000 for a charity of their choice, you find a copy of the asnwers before the quiz - is it OK to cheat for the benefit of the charity?” Oooo that’s a toughy, have a listen to hear what Mike has to say about mine and Spanky’s arguments.

Awesome, we had a real live scientologist on the show this morning as part of our regular feature - Religious Roast. Mr. Mike Ferriss joined us from Auckland with the hope of answering some of those burning questions we’ve been busting to ask for years, and dispell some myths that may or may not have been completely spun by overeager media. OK, so some of the answers were fairly vague but this is a bloody interesting interview and sheds if only a shred of shadowy light on the mysterious scientology.

We had a busy show today, first up we had a chat with Paul Lonsdale who is the manager of the Central City Business Association (we didn’t eve know such an organisation existed until now). He told us of their mission to rid the inner city of thuggery with the awesome power of classical music. It’s called the Mozart Effect and results have shown it is having a very positive effect on the city streets of Christchurch. I don’t know about the effects on learning, but at least the incidents of anti-social behaviour have decreased.

We were also really lucky to have a chat with author and humanitarian Mike Kim over in the States. Mike has recently had his book published called Escaping North Korea which, as the name suggests details the plight of refugees from North Korea seeking a better life in China (sorry for the very vague description). Mike went undercover in China to investigate and help those in need and of course came out with some incredible stories of hope and the strength of the human spirit. Do listen to this:

This morning was jam packed with great stuff, lots o give aways (congrats to all our winners) and some very interesting guests. First up we spoke with a brain doctor by the name of Richard Fraull who is the Director of Centre for Brain Reseach up in Auckland. We wanted to find out how it all worked - where do they get their brains from, how do they study them and what for, do they keep them in big jars? Are brains still the big mystery they've always been and if we wanted to, how do we donate our brains?

NIWA were out and about trawling for deep sea discoveries around the Chatham Rise aboard their research vessel the RV Tangaroa and snagged some very interesting specimens. We had a chat with Peter McMillan from NIWA who told us more on some of their fantastic prizes, including one of those scary looking blighters that emits light and eats other fish that give of radiance too, where does this light come from? WHY??

It’s ‘Science Season’ down in Antarctica, or rather it’s just kicking off, when all the learned folk head down to the Ross Sea and begin studying. Matt Vance is the Communications Advisor from Antarctica New Zealand and he popped into the studio on his way to work to tell us what’s happening down there right now. Christchurch is the gateway to Scott Base - all the planes leave from ChCh Airport - so there are a lot of excited people in town. Matt gave us a fascinating insight as well as told us about the radio station down there - our immediate competition really.

How are you feeling today? Tuesday’s apparently the toughest day of the week, in regards to how happy people feel. This is according to Dr. Tamlin Conner from the psych department at the University of Otago who has conducting a study focussing on the happiness of men and women during different times of the day on each day of the week. She used an innovative method of texting questions to her subjects as well and found that Tuesday was the day when people felt most down or unhappy and men were overall more ‘up’ then women. Kicking off our Monday was ex Christchurch Mayor, Mr. Garry Moore. Now that he’s not in the hot seat, Garry can quite happily give his opinion on the city without incurring the wrath of the greater community. But he’s a wise man and we wanted to hear his thoughts on the rebuilding of parts of our fair city and in particular, rebuilding/rejuvenating the city centre. Oh, and abolishing the one way system, yeah there’s that too.

So first up we spoke with New Zealand’s best comedy/historian and opinionist Te Radar. This eco friendly nugget of stand up is performing his very popular Eating the Dog show around New Zealand, visiting smaller towns and selling out their halls. We caught up with Te Radar this morning, when he spoke with us from Waimate and will be arriving in Canterbury tomorrow, with a Friday night show in Rolleston then Sunday he’ll be at the New Brighton Eco Market with a show that evening too. Also we had the absolute pleasure of having Christchurch ex-pat Lindon Puffin in studio this morning for a chat and a song. He has come down to play the Band Together concert in Hagley Park tomorrow arvo so it made sense to get the wee gem in. We had an interesting chat with a man by the name of Gerard Kennedy who is an expert on the subject of something called Sexomnia. Gerard is in town because there is a big conference held by the Australasian Sleep Association so we got hold of him for a chat before he presents his piece. Guys, have you ever got it on with your partner whilst sleeping, only to wake up in a very precarious position, OR having just recieved a slap to the face? Turns out it’s not a huge problem with males, but it does exist.

You are most probably aware there are a lot of very talented bands in our fair city of Quakechurch, and one in particular - five piece Von Voin Strum joined us in the studio this morning for a chat and a toon. Von Voin took out the grand champion title at this year’s Battle of the Bands for Christchurch, and are dead set on becoming a very exciting feature in the local circuit. Sam, Kurt and Matthew, each armed with an acoustic axe came in to tell us about their gig happening tonight at Goodbye Blue Monday tonight. Have a listen to their live to air of ‘Take me Home’.

This morning we brought you a very popular feature called Religious Roast and on the platter today was Paganism. One division of Paganism is a religion called Wicca which we were really keen to learn more about but our interviewee Debbie Dawson is more of a witch and not so much a Wiccan. Anyway have a listen to this chat and learn a little something about this often misunderstood tradition - they love composting and recycling! Yeah.
