The See Us podcast is a new initiative hoping to provide students at UBC Sauder with more transparent communication from the CUS, amplify marginalized and non-traditional voices in Business, and build a more welcoming community within our school. Join host Ky Sargeant each episode, as she breaks down the CUS News you need to know, chats with awesome guests, and spends too long going off on random tangents related to student life.
- 11 - Season Finale: Transgender Day of Visibility
Today is Transgender Day of Visibility, a day dedicated to celebrating and recognizing the contributions of transgender people in the world.
Hi, my name is Ky (she/they) and I am a transgender woman.
As with the episode on Transgender Day of Remembrance, I am a little bit overwhelmed with stuff to do right now and my original plan for the episode ended up getting scrapped. Instead, you get me. For the last time this term.
In this episode I share a little bit more of my story, what I'm doing here, and why I'm doing it.
If you take away one thing from this day, one action that you can do to make a difference for transgender people, it would be learning how to introduce your pronouns along with your name when you meet new people. It is easy to do, does not harm you at all, and makes a world of difference for trans/non-binary people.

Today, February 28th, is the last day of Black history month and though I believe every month should be black history month (because history shouldn't be divided by race), I took this opportunity to speak with Chiamaka (Chichi) Achebe, an extraordinary 2nd-year student about her experiences in and out of Sauder.
Lastly, we wrap up the episode with a discussion on what it means to be an Ally, and how we can move away from performative allyship toward actions that create tangible impact. For more resources on black history month, check out these links below!

We're back from the break and ready for an exciting year ahead! In continuing our journey to cover the absolutely massive range of experiences here at Sauder, we're going to be talking to a couple of students in the Commerce Scholars Program!
CSP is an amazing program for anyone even remotely interested in pursuing academia, research, or just looking to grow their own critical thinking ability! It's a two-year program that gives you the opportunity to develop your own research topic with a mentor and possiblyyyyy even be published. We talk to Jackson Miller and Teagon Donald in back-to-back rapid interviews to give you a sense of how each found their way into the program... and also maybe I share a little bit because ummm.. I'm also in it too (and think it's toooootally under-rated).
All that plus a little bit of CUS news and you get the podcast you know and love!
Learn more about the program here and attend the info session this Feb 7th!

Sometimes we think we can do everything, that we’re strong enough to take on the world, that all we need to do is just sit down and #grind.
And sometimes we are wrong. This is a story about overconfidence and the big fat reality check that life will slap you with when you try to fly a little too close to the sun.

This week on September 30th, we will be recognizing National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Yet, even though most of us recognize the importance of speaking about Indigenous topics, there are few times at Sauder where we really get a chance to speak to and learn from Indigenous people.
In this episode, I speak with Jeff Sutherland of the Ktunaxa Nation as he shares his experience as an Indigenous student at Sauder, his work within the faculty, and what we can do to be better allies in the world we live in today.
Go talk to Jeff and listen to his music!

Have you ever had a professor that you really wanted to get to know more but just didn't know how to do it? Maybe you're an incoming first-year that's never had that type of relationship before, or a second-year that's starting to think about their specialization and is looking to get more info. Whatever the case, connecting with your instructors is an extremely useful practice and to help me break it down is someone we'll all see in our degree, Professor of COMM 101 & 202, Conor Topley (he/him).
On top of that, we cover a couple of updates around COVID, some newly posted Resources from the CUS, and explain the upcoming Constitutional referendum. All in this episode of See Us!

Being in University is stressful, growing up is stressful, COVID is stressful. Idk about ya'll but in the last year, all of these things have been slowly chipping away at my sanity, and it feels like it takes everything I have to just hang on. That is why in this episode we are going to be talking about mental health with Alycia Berg and Vivian Mak, the incoming VP Mental Healths for Sauder Health and Wellness next year! Together we talk about the challenges of homesickness, overcoming burnout, and resources to learn more. I hope you join us in the conversation as we start to unravel mental health stigma, and learn that sometimes its okay not to be okay.
