  • 9 - Big 4 Royal Commission

‘Call in the big guns’ - is what the Australian public demanded. It doesn’t get much bigger than a Royal Commission. The big 4 banks were in the cross hairs and they couldn’t pay their way out. Drug-money cash deposits went unreported, fees for literally nothing were charged to innocent people, dodgy insurance policies sold to mental health patients and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. In this episode, we discuss how it all started, what happened and the result of the Royal Commission into Banking Conduct. Listen in to what most people thought ‘only happened overseas’.

  • 8 - The rise and fall..and rise of mining in Australia

The device you’re reading this on likely has something from the Australian mining industry in it. Bauxite, rutile and tantalum - ever heard of them? Australia is the world’s largest producer of these resources. You’ve probably benefited from them without even knowing it. The mining industry in Australia has shaped the country - both physically and financially. However, in the 1960s, people believed that Australia actually lacked resources. In the 90’s, mining was dismissed as an ‘old world’ industry conjuring up images of dirty coal mines and dusty underground tunnels. What’s changed? Quite a lot as we find out.

  • 7 - Remembering The GFC

The GFC’s impact was felt in Australia. In fact, it’s repercussions are still being felt today. It’s true. Did you know that in 2009, Australia recorded its first loss in exports since 1965? The AUD lost 30%, unemployment rose and the government took massive steps with stimulus packages. However, most Australians barely smelt a whiff of it. Other countries definitely weren’t as fortunate. How about the ‘jingle mail’? Houses in the US selling for less than $1000! In some cases as low as a few dollars. Could you really buy a house in Detroit for the cost of a Happy Meal?
