In this show, Maureen Osuna, MSN, RN (Nurse Mo) breaks down a wide range of nursing school concepts so they’re easy to understand. Each episode aims to help nursing students improve their study techniques, pass nursing school exams, and feel more confident in clinical. If you’re nervous about nursing school, not “getting it” in lecture, or feeling overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn, this podcast will help you optimize your study time so you can learn more with less stress. While nursing school is challenging, it doesn’t have to be impossible. When concepts are explained in a way that “just makes sense”, nursing students have better recall on exams, feel more confident working with patients in clinical, and are better prepared for NCLEX. Nurse Mo understands the struggles nursing students face and draws on more than 11 years of clinical experience to make nursing school less intimidating. Each episode removes the “fluff” and focuses on the key things a nursing student (and nurse) needs to know about a variety of disease conditions. The show also provides tips for succeeding in nursing school, guidance for students and new nurses, and insider information to help you excel at the bedside.

Thu, 03 Oct 2024 - 424 - #366: Preventing CAUTI Like a Pro
In this episode, we delve into catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), a common hospital-acquired infection with serious implications. We’ll explore how these infections occur, their prevalence, risk factors, complications, and most importantly, strategies for prevention. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are one of the most commonly reported hospital-acquired conditions, and have a big impact on length of stay, cost, and mortality. Length of stay - According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, a CAUTI increases length of stay by 2 to 4 days. Cost - On average, the cost of treating a CAUTI can range from $900 to $14,000 per case which accounts for an estimated $340 to $450 million per year in the United States. Since most cases of CAUTI are preventable, Medicare and Medicaid do not reimburse hospitals for these costs. Mortality - In critically ill patients, the mortality rate for CAUTI is 30%. It is estimated that more than 13,000 patients die each year due to CAUTI-related complications. Listen to this episode to learn how you can play a huge role in preventing CAUTI in your patients! ___________________ Full Transcript - Read the article and view references FREE CLASS - If all you've heard are nursing school horror stories, then you need this class! Local anesthetics are medications that block nerve impulses so that pain signals aren’t transmitted to the brain. The result is that the anesthetized area is numb and pain is controlled. Just because local anesthetics are “local” doesn’t mean systemic toxicity can’t occur. Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) occurs when local anesthetics extend into the system at toxic levels. It most typically occurs due to the physician accidentally injecting the medication into the intravascular space. However, it can also be from locally administered overdose, which leads to systemic toxicity. When the heart rate is irregular or too slow, cardiac output is compromised. A pacemaker may be utilized to support the heart’s electrical system, stabilize arrhythmias, and ensure the heart pumps at a rate that supports tissue perfusion throughout the body. Other indications include post myocardial infarction, heart failure, congenital heart defects, and temporarily after some cardiac surgeries. This episode answers some key questions you have about pacemakers including: What do all these terms mean? Capture? Sensing? Output? What’s the difference between failure to sense and oversensing? What is failure to capture? What’s the difference between electrical capture and mechanical capture? What are the different types of pacemakers? What do the letters in the pacemaker settings mean? What are some common pacing modes? How do I troubleshoot common temporary pacemaker problems? What is an ICD? Prioritizing patient care is often difficult for students in nursing school or even new nurses. And while novice nurses thrive when they utilize to-do lists, prioritization is so much more than making a task list and following it throughout your shift. It’s actually a constantly fluctuating component of your workflow that must take multiple factors (and multiple patients) into consideration. The good news is, most of the time you can answer prioritization questions on nursing school exams and prioritize your nursing care at the bedside by following two key frameworks - the ABCs and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Even though nursing is THE most trusted profession, you may be surprised to learn that academic misconduct occurs at the same rate amongst nursing students as it does other academic disciplines. One reason for this is that cheating goes beyond just getting “extra help” on an exam, and students may not recognize other aspects of academic dishonesty as actual cheating. The reason cheating is such a big deal in nursing school is that it’s not just the student who suffers. Ultimately, patient safety is at stake. In this special bonus episode brought to you by ATI, we’re exploring the concept of academic integrity, what counts as “cheating” and how both the student (and their future patients) are put at risk. Thu, 08 Jun 2023 - 348 - #292: BONUS! What is Nurse Shock?
I remember being a new grad nurse and foolishly thinking my biggest challenge would be learning critical care pathophysiology. Boy was I wrong. Thu, 30 Mar 2023 - 332 - #277: The Doorway Assessment
As the nurse, one of your key responsibilities is to notice changes in patient condition…and that can be difficult to do in a timely manner if you’re not assessing your patient on a very consistent basis. Now, I’m not saying you’re going to do a full head-to-toe or even a focused assessment every time you go in your patient’s room…but there are SO MANY things you can learn about your patient simply from intentionally observing them. I call this the “doorway assessment” because much of it can be done from the doorway! Though, of course, you’ll intentionally observe your patient every single time you interact with them…but doorway assessment sounds kind of catchy, right? In this episode I’m sharing the main things you can observe in an unobtrusive and consistent manner…hit play and I’ll see you there! Are you looking for an easier way to learn Med Surg?
