The seal on Vaati's prison seems to be weakening, but when Zelda and the Six Maidens open the portal to the Four Sword Sanctuary, they are each imprisoned by Link's shadowy doppelganger. Pulling the Four Sword from its plinth, the now divided Link pursues the Maidens while Vaati's vengeful presence is unleashed upon Hyrule once again.

Link travels to the Palace of Twilight in pursuit of Zant. Using light-energy from Sol orbs, Link is able to power platforms and cut through spooky Zant Masks and shadow-crystal fog. In the throne room, Zant pulls Link into an increasingly manic battle which takes place inside previous dungeons. The Fused Shadow pieces are returned to Midna and she strikes at Zant in anger.

Goaded through Lost Woods again by Skull Kid’s mean marionettes, Link returns to the Sacred Grove and uses the Master Sword to unlock a doorway to the distant past and, deep within, the entrance to the Temple of Time.

Link navigates the crumbling structure of Snowpeak Ruins with the help of the Ball and Chain, Yeto’s soup, and the well-meaning directions of Yeta. After finding the Mirror Shard, the ailing Yeta peers into it and is transformed into the fearsome Twilit Ice Mass, Blizzeta. Link defeats Blizzeta, returning Yeta to her true form, and the Yeti couple are reunited and their love is rekindled.

In search of a piece of the Mirror of Twilight, Link finds Ashei on Snowpeak mountain, armed with a mystery to solve: a large monster has been spotted grabbing Reekfish from Zora’s Domain and carrying it up the mountain – no one can follow the creature without getting lost in the blizzard. Link catches the potent Reekfish and learns its sent in order to locate the beast. At the end of the trail is a friendly Yeti who knows where to locate the first mirror shard.

The haunted chambers of the Arbiter's Grounds hint at a darker side to Hyrule's history. Among the decay and otherworldly apparitions, Link contends with Big Poes, wandering hordes of Stalkin, lumbering Gibdo, and the fearsome Death Sword. Obtaining the Spinner, the gargantuan Twilit Fossil, Stallord, is defeated. Link and Midna enter the Mirror Chamber only to find it shattered. Six mournful sages appear and sheepishly recount the story of their final encounter with the Demon King himself, Ganondorf.

Back at Telma’s Bar in Hyrule Castle Town, Link finds Rusl among the members of a secretive group trying to restore peace to Hyrule. Informed of troubling developments in Gerudo Desert, Link is instructed by another member, Auru, to investigate the condemned prison there. Arriving safely by cannon, Link and Midna find a formidable force of Bulblins fortified at the entrance to the prison. Link is forced to fight and defeat King Bulbin in one-on-one combat in order to enter the Arbiter's Grounds.

Link races through and underneath Hyrule Castle Town to bring an ailing Midna to Princess Zelda. Reunited, Zelda urges Link to find the Master Sword in the Sacred Grove then heals Midna by passing her life force to her and vanishing in the process. Midna and Link find their way to the Sacred Grove in Faron Woods and are led and coaxed through winding paths by Skull Kid. After besting Skull Kid’s puppet menaces and the stone guardians, Link finds the Master Sword which cleanses him of Zant's evil curse.

Link swims into Lake Hylia and explores the Lakebed Temple. Within its cavernous walls Link battles against a giant Deku Toad and is rewarded with the Claw Shot. New item in hand, Link faces Morpheel and emerges triumphant, gaining the final Fused Shadow Piece. Just as things seem to be going their way, Zant appears at Lanayru’s Spring, mortally wounds Midna and traps Link in wolf-form once again. The Light Spirit whisks them to safety and urges Link to find Princess Zelda once more.

Honoring Queen Rutela's request, Link returns to the ailing Prince Ralis currently being cared for at Telma's Bar. While the young Prince is stable for the moment, he needs proper care that can only be found in Kakariko Village. Link quickly discovers that Ilia has somehow lost her memory, but agrees to help her escort the prince safely across Hyrule field. Her son safe under Renado's care, the spirit of Queen Rutela bestows the Zora Armor on Link, allowing him access to the Lakebed Temple.

Episode two of the Legend of Zelda Animated Series, titled Cold Spells, brings us back to Hyrule on a sunny spring day. Zelda has enlisted everyone to help clean the castle but, Link being Link, tries to get out of it. According to the rules of television, this makes everything infinitely more complex for just about everybody, so much so that Ganon manages to secure the Triforce of Wisdom for one fleeting moment.

Link finds Ilia closely guarding a sick young Zora in Hyrule Castle Town, gets a ride from a Shadow Kargarok taxi, battles a giant insect, defrosts Zora’s Domain, and meets a ghostly Queen Rutella. The Light Spirit Lanayru grants Link an eerie vision depicting dark interlopers who corrupted the Spirit Realm in their attempt to harness the power of the Triforce. Link is warned about the corrupting powers of their dark magic.

Link enters the Goron Mines in search of Darbus, the Goron patriarch corrupted by the Fused Shadow. Utilizing the magnetic qualities of the Iron Boots, Link is able to navigate the mining tunnels with ease, finding Darbus twisted into the Twilit Igniter Fyrus. Entrusted by the Goron Elders with the Hero’s Bow, a few well placed shots return the patriarch to his old self and normalcy is restored. The Gorons help Kakariko in their recovery, while Link heads towards Lanayru for the next Fused Shadow Piece.

Link returns from sumo lessons with Mayor Bo in Ordon to find King Bulblin kidnapping Colin in Kakariko Village. Link races King Bulblin through Hyrule Field and throws him off of Eldin Bridge. With Colin safely recovering in Renado's care, Link travels up Death Mountain. A Goron Elder tests Link's resolve with a sumo match. Impressed by his strength and skill (thanks to the Iron Boots) Gor Coron asks Link to enter the sacred mines and quell the darkness within.

In our debut Tandem Legends Sidequests episode, we begin the infamous television phenomenon, The Legend of Zelda Animated Series.

In this first episode, titled The Ringer, we're introduced to Link, a former adventurer now reluctantly protecting the Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda, the exasperated princess simply trying to host an amateur magicians competition, and Ganon, the bumbling villain, sneaking into said competition.

A surprising number of problematic situations ensue.

Link leaves Faron Woods and enters Hyrule Field in pursuit of the missing children from Ordon. At the end of the trail, Link finds a Twilight-covered Kakariko Village which is besieged by Shadow Beasts and Kargaroks. Link gathers tears of light and frees the Light Spirit Eldin, saving the Kakariko Villagers Renado, Luda, and Barnes and their guests – the children from Ordon. Link is also reunited with Epona, who successfully fled a harassing band of Bulblins.

With the help of Ook and the Gale Boomerang, Link defeats the gigantic Twilit Parasite Diababa and Midna grabs the first Fused Shadow piece.

Link is transformed back to Hylian form, now with iconic green clothes, and told he has the power of the Chosen One. Link is tasked with finding the forbidden power in the Forest Temple in order to defeat the King of Twilight. On the way, Link is stopped by a golden wolf and is taught a new sword technique from a mysterious Stalfos/Spirit.

Today, Link basks in the glory of his victory as Darmani. Celebrated as a hero, Link is encouraged by the Goron Elder and his Son to enter the Goron Races, and is now trusted to carry the highly dangerous Powder Keg. The Powder Keg allows Link to lend a hand in clearing the boulder blocking the road to the troubled Romani Ranch, giving him a chance to help sisters Romani and Cremia, and reunite with an old friend.

Meticulously going from level to level, Link faces puzzling challenges and slippery surfaces, eventually arming himself with the Fire Arrows. Switching between Goron, Hylian, and Deku forms, Link reaches the top of the Temple where the mighty Goht is encased in ice.

Freeing Goht from its icy prison triggers a rampage through the massive ringed corridor. Link dons his Goron Mask, chasing after the Mechanical Monster and clashing against it with his metal spikes.

Defeating Goht frees another mysterious giant, who refers to itself as a Guardian before disappearing into the mists. Spring comes to Snowhead, much to the relief of Goron Village.

Pursuing his attacker brings him to Clock Town, a city threatened by the ominous moon slowly falling from the sky. While stepping inside the Desert Colossus was easy enough, it quickly becomes clear that this Temple won't be without its obstacles. Nabooru has been kidnapped by Koume and Kotake, leaving Link to explore the Spirit Temple and face Twinrova on his own.

Link enters Gerudo Valley, the birthplace of Ganondorf, King of Thieves, and infiltrates the Gerudo Fortress. After proving his worth in the eyes of the Gerudo, Link is allowed passage across the Haunted Wasteland to the Desert Colossus, location of the Spirit Temple, and the second in command of the Gerudo, Nabooru.

The Fire Temple, a scorching hot dungeon located deep within Death Mountain Crater filled with imprisoned Gorons waiting to be eaten by the Subterranean Lava Dragon, Volvagia. Our first temple as an adult is filled with creepy giant hands and a veritable horde of Stalfos. While we certainly get put through our paces, we of course emerge victorious against the dungeon boss, Phantom Ganon. After a short goodbye to Saria, Link is given the startling news that he is not a member of the childlike Kokiri, but is in fact a Hylian brought to the forest by his dying mother.. And with that cheerful revelation we're off to find the next Medallion!

The Master Sword has been pulled from its pedestal! Unfortunately, there was a miscalculation in the prophecies and Link is 7 years too young to be a proper Hero. With Link held in stasis, Ganondorf nabs the Triforce and turns Hyrule into a very different place. 7 years later, Link is told by Rauru, the Sage of Light, he must find the other Sages to save Hyrule. Link encounters the mysterious Sheik who offers advice on reaching the first Sage deep within the Forest Temple.

Link makes his way up Zora’s River towards Zora’s Domain, the source of all water in Hyrule and the location of the final Spiritual Stone. When Link arrives the Zora’s are in disarray and their King is despondent because Princess Ruto has gone missing.

After considerable investigation, Link discovers that Ruto is somehow inside Lord Jabu-Jabu, the patron deity of the Zora’s. Allowing himself to be swallowed whole, Link enters the belly of Lord Jabu-Jabu, eventually finding Princess Ruto in the middle of a search to recover a lost item.

Recovering the item, which just so happens to be the Spiritual Stone of Water, and defeating the Bio-Electric Anemone: Barinade, Link and Ruto are able to leave Lord Jabu-Jabu. Three spiritual stones in hand, Link makes his way to Hyrule Castle to meet with Zelda.

But a dark cloud looms over Hyrule Castle, suddenly an all too familiar scene unfolds before Link. Zelda and Impa ride out of town, Zelda catches sight of Link and tosses an object towards him. Hot on their tail is Ganondorf. Link makes to stand against him, but Ganondorf is clearly a powerful magic user and casts Link aside, proclaiming he will soon rule the world, and resumes his chase.

Now alone, Link recovers the thrown object which fell into the moat around Hyrule Castle Town, discovering it is the Ocarina of Time. A telepathic message from Zelda tells Link that she had to leave the Castle, and teaches him the song Song of Time, the final piece necessary to opening the door to the Sacred Realm.

The Gorons are starving. Darunia, leader of the Gorons, agrees to help Link in his quest only if he can restore their food supply by clearing out Dodongo’s Cavern various monsters: Beamos, Armos, Lizalfos, and Dodongos.

King Dodongo destroyed and the cavern cleared out, Darunia remains true to his word, dubbing Link his Sworn Brother and bestowing the Goron's Ruby. With the Spiritual Stone of Fire in his possession, Link is one step closer to thwarting Ganondorf's evil plan to steal the Triforce.

Not three steps into Hyrule Field, Link is met by a sagely owl named Kaepora Gaebora that advises him to head towards Castle Town. Along the way Link runs into Malon, who ends up giving him a Cuckoo that proves instrumental in Link's infiltration efforts of Hyrule Castle. Link finally comes face to face with the Princess of Destiny, Princess Zelda, who warns Link of a coming storm, named Ganondorf, and sends him on a quest to obtain the remaining Spirital Stones.

Stepping inside the mouth of the Great Deku Tree, Link hopes to lift an evil curse. Carving through Skulltulas and Deku Scrubs, Link eventually reaches the Parasitic Armored Arachnid, Queen Gohma.

Queen Gohma destroyed, the Great Deku Tree still dies, but not before bestowing the Kokiri Emerald to Link and pointing him towards Hyrule Castle and the Princess of Destiny.

The boy without a fairy sleeps restlessly while evil forces gather in the world. Navi the Fairy has been sent to retrieve him, as his destiny begins with helping to break the curse placed upon the guardian spirit of the forest, the Great Deku Tree. Link explores the Kokiri Forest and manages to scrounge up a sword and shield, eventually being given access to the interior of the Deku Tree.

We made it to Ocarina of Time! I don't think we have to explain why we're super excited to be here.

That was quick! Today, we review our playthrough of Four Swords and chat about our impressions, the key themes, the connections with Zelda canon, and introduce the next game in the timeline.

Four Swords begins with Zelda and Link entering the shrine of the Four Sword many years after it has been used to defeat and seal away the evil Wind Mage, Vaati. Zelda has growing concerns that the seal that binds Vaati in the Four Sword has begun to weaken.   

Suddenly Vaati appears in the form of an enormous eye, free from his imprisonment within the Four Sword. He takes Zelda as his prize and retreats to his Palace.

Link is invited by a few fairies to pull the Four Sword from its shrine, splitting his form. The Link clones set out to earn the respect of each of the Three Great Fairies of the realm who will show the way to Vaati’s Palace.

Through complex puzzles, dangerous battles, and a high volume of rupee collecting, the Links prove themselves worthy enough to face Vaati. The Great Fairies reveal Vaati’s floating Palace and the final push to rescue Zelda begins.

While Vaati’s final battle is demanding, the Links are able to best the sorcerer, once again sealing him inside the Four Sword and freeing Zelda from his clutches. Their task complete, the Links are returned to their singular form and the Four Sword is once again enshrined.

Link pushes his way through a dark and twisted Hyrule Castle filled with the servants of Vaati. Neither the bevy of traps and puzzles nor an army of Darknuts proves effective against our stalwart hero, as Link makes his way to the top of Hyrule Castle just in time to stop Vaati’s dark ritual.

The battle is fierce and long, but Link triumphs, freeing Hyrule of Vaati’s curse and restoring both Zelda and Ezlo to their true forms. Ezlo expresses his gratitude and, before departing, gifts Link with an iconic green pointed hat..

Link enters the Palace of Winds which is a winding dungeon filled with clever and complex puzzles. A large variety of obstacles and enemies are in Link's path but with the final item in hand,  Roc’s Cape, Link is able to defeat the Gyorg Pair boss and obtain the Wind Element.

Link goes to the Elemental Sanctuary and infuses his blade with all four elements,  creating the Four Sword. After learning that the light force can be found inside the spirit of Princess Zelda, Vaati appears in the disguised form of King Daltus, attacks Link and disappears back into Hyrule Castle.

Link ventures into the Royal Valley, the location that the ghostly King had marked on his map. Navigating the dark woods and spooky graveyard, Link winds up in the Royal Crypt, the final resting place of King Gustaf.

Link is given a Kinstone that gives him access to Veil Falls and the Cloud Tops region high above. Among the clouds Link meets several members of the Wind Tribe who grant him access to the Palace of Winds.

Like most trips to the Library, Link's starts with returning a few overdue books and ends with being visited by a ghost of a long dead king.

In this section we run all over Hyrule fusing kinstones, tackling the Temple of Droplets, and receive the Flame Lantern and Water Element. With three of the four crystalline elements in hand, victory is almost in sight!

Link has his sights set on the Wind Element, located deep within the Castor Wilds. Making use of his newly acquired Pegasus Boots and Bow and Arrow, he discovers the Fortress of Winds. 

Despite being awarded the Mole Mitts and defeating the dungeon boss, Mazaal, Link does not receive the Wind Element, as it has apparently been taken by the Wind Tribe to parts unknown. For now we settle for the Ocarina of Wind and begin our pursuit of the next element.

Link's long treacherous journey up Mount Crenel begins with Tektites, Peahats, and falling boulders. With the help of the Grip Ring Link eventually finds his way to Melari's Mine, where work immediately begins on the broken Picori Blade.

The Cave of Flames proves treacherous and convoluted, but Link pulls through, receiving the Cane of Pacci and the Fire Element as reward. 

By now Melari has reforged the Picori Blade into the White Sword, and points Link to the Elemental Sanctuary in Hyrule Castle. Once in the Sanctuary, the White Sword is enhanced, allowing Link to create a temporary copy of himself. 

Exiting the Sanctuary, Vaati appears, and it is revealed that he was once Ezlo's apprentice.

Zelda is turned to stone by the dark sorcerer, Vaati. Her childhood friend, Link, is tasked by the King of Hyrule to find the Picori in hopes of reforging the Picori Blade. Exploring the Minish Woods, Link stumbles upon a magical hat named Ezlo, and the pair set off to find the Minish Village.

The two are sent to Deepwood Shrine to recover a magical crystal called the Earth Element, one of four elemental crystals that will reforge the Picori Blade and lift the curse from Zelda.

The Imprisoned once again threatens the Sealed Temple.

With the help of Groose and his new super weapon, The Groosenator, Link is able to seal the beast a second time. The Temple secure, Link ventures through the Gate of Time and finally comes face to face with Zelda.

And she's got a lot to tell him. 

Link immediately gets busy upon entering the Fire Sanctuary. Rafting across rivers of lava, dispatching cursed enemies and saving the skin of several Mogma treasure hunters. For his efforts Link is rewarded with an upgraded pair of digging mitts, the Mogma Mitts.

After besting Ghirahim once more, Link acquires Din’s Flame, which transforms the Goddess White Sword into the Master Sword. And, once more, a piece of the Triforce appears on the back of Link’s hand, now complete.

Finally at full strength, Link heads to the Gate of Time in the Sealed Temple. Just before performing a Skyward Strike, the ground once more begins to shake..

Link achieves spiritual enlightenment after dodging more Spirit Realm Guardians and obtains the Fire Shield Earrings, which allow us to enter the sweltering caverns of the Volcano Summit. There we meet Gorko again and are tasked with dowsing a few gates of fire which block our path to the Fire Sanctuary, home of the final sacred flame. We realize we need a larger container to dowse the next fire gate so we travel back to Lake Floria to borrow Faron’s water basin.

Given the size of the basin, we enlist Scrapper to help us carry it safely back to the Volcano Summit. Scrapper jumps ahead of us as we dive down to the surface in Eldin though and we must escort him and the basin back to the summit of the volcano, dodging and dispatching the monsters which block our path.

After safely hauling the water basin back to the Volcano Summit, Scrapper pours the water over the mouth of the Fire Sanctuary and grants us entrance to the temple within.

Now aboard the Sandship, we find it to be derelict and largely abandoned save for a few Keese and Sand Spumes. After a bit of exploration and facing off against the Mechanical Maniac himself, Scervo, we access the ship’s control room, expecting to find the flame, but instead several large tentacles burst from the deck. We quickly escaped the interior as tentacles tore at the hull. Now on the deck we began our fight against Tentalus, Abyssal Leviathan.

Once our victory is secured, the flame appears and our sword is upgraded to the Goddess White Sword and, just as the Triforce of Courage did before, the Triforce of Wisdom appears on the back of our hand..

With nothing left for us on the Sandship, we made our way to the Isle of Songs where we learned Din’s Power, the final key on our quest to unlocking the true power of the Goddess Sword.

We just barely manage to pass Nayru’s Silent Realm and finally receive the Clawshots as reward. Able to access new areas, we explore the Lanayru Desert, meeting two new Gorons named Golo and Gortram along the way. Finding ourselves facing an ancient sea now turned to a sandy wasteland, we meet an Ancient Robot named Skipper once charged with captaining the ship that protected the Sacred Flame. 

With his help we find the elusive vessel and board, ready to find the next flame.

This week Shannon and Joe venture into the Ancient Cistern and meet a few old frenemies, including Froaks and creeping Skulltulas, and cross blades with the most imposing Stalfos yet. Deep below the pristine water in the Ancient Cistern we stumble into an episode of Walking Dead: Bokoblins.

Once the secrets of the Ancient Cistern are revealed Link checks-in with a fussy Ghirahim and then deftly defeats the Ancient Automaton, Koloktos, using the mysteriously useful Whip to tear apart its mechanical limbs. Fi obtains the first sacred flame which holds the power of Farore and uses it to strengthen the Goddess Sword. Link also obtains the Triforce of Courage!

Back above the cloud barrier Link travels back to the Isle of Songs and learns Nayru’s Wisdom which will be the key for accessing Nayru’s Trial - an adventure for next week!

This week we clean up a few sidequests in Skyloft before heading back below the clouds in pursuit of the first Sacred Flame. After visiting Batreaux and fetching an item for Dodo on Fun Fun Island we return back to Faron Woods. Link gains access to Farore's Silent Realm, which is a spooky alternate version of Faron Woods. While avoiding the terrifying and relentless Guardians, Link gathers the Sacred Tears and completes the first Trial.

Gifted with the Water Dragon’s Scale Link is now able to access more areas of Faron Woods, leading to the discovery of a Hermit Kikwi known as Yerbal. Yerbal points Link to Lake Floria, where the Water Dragon Faron resides. In Lake Floria, Link meets a Parella called Jellyf who eventually leads him to the Dragon and one step closer to obtaining the first Sacred Flame!

In this exposition heavy episode, Link finally faces off against the subject of his nightmares, managing to re-seal what we now know as The Imprisoned.  Afterward, despite Link's great feat of heroism, the Old Woman informs him that his sacred sword just isn't quite up to snuff yet. We're pointed back to Skyloft to find information on the Three Sacred Flames, so that we may temper our sword and unlock its true power.  What we learn leads us through the Thunderhead and to the Isle of Songs.

The Lanayru Mining Facility tries to throw us for a loop, but at this point we're pretty sure there's nothing we can't handle. Thunder Keese? Beamos? Psh. What is that? An Armos? As if. 

The real meat of this session starts at the very end, with Link once again coming face to face with Zelda and Impa. Though who else but Ghirahim could ruin this moment? Things get exciting as we get to see Impa in action for the first time as she throws up a protective energy shield to guard against Ghirahim's attacks. Unfortunately, Zelda and Impa are forced to retreat, but with the Goddess Harp now in our possession, and a mandate from Impa to go speak with the Old Woman at the Sealed Temple, the momentum is really starting to build.

Lanayru Desert, an expansive and scarred landscape dotted with some of the toughest enemies we've yet faced. This is one of the most interesting areas we've explored so far, as we're given the opportunity to switch between its past and present state by striking the Time-Shift Stones mined in its distant past by the Ancient Robots.

The Eldin region awaits! We both have a great time exploring this volcanic area. There's a pretty stark contrast in gameplay between Faron Woods and Eldin, a change that I think we both enjoyed. We met a few new enemies, had a chat with a few Mogma, and got shouted at by a mysterious stranger dressed in black.

Finally we are free of Skyloft! We triumphantly dive to the surface to find a desolate wasteland, covered in monsters unimaginable... wait. No. No it's actually not that bad. Sure there's a few Deku Babas. Some Bokoblins and such.. But there's also some weird cute bush creatures. And mysteries! And awesome music! I'm thinking the surface won't be so bad after all..
