ABOUT AWIN TAVAKOLI
With more than 20 years of international career – in sports, real estate, statistics, banking and law – Awin broke out of her corporate job 3 years ago to become an entrepreneur. Awin’s mission is to make law accessible and understandable for others.
As a pioneer in change and innovation, she has been disrupting the traditional legal industry by creating a unique business model out of her knowledge in mathematics and logic, and her skills in risk mitigation and law. A few months ago, the African Diaspora’s business and entertainment communities were rocked when Black women at Okay Africa and Essence Magazine accused the CEOs, Abiola Oke and Richelieu Dennis, respectively, of inappropriate behavior, and labor and employment law violations including sexual harassment.
The allegations were extensive and went viral, forcing both CEOs to resign from their positions. Since then, in recent times, Dennis claims that the independent law firms hired by Essence Magazine to investigate the allegations, have exonerated him, and found no merits to the harassment claims. Notwithstanding his claim, the alleged victims are yet to recant their stories against both executives.
In this 140th episode of The Africa Music Law show, Ms. Uduak, host and producer, invites Employment and Civil Rights lawyer Michelle Reynolds to discuss the lessons for employers and top-level executives, so these types of situations can be avoided. It is a very engaging, educational, and informative episode. Listen to the podcast episode on your favorite platforms and share.
Michelle Reynolds (Guest) – Ms. Reynolds uses her legal acumen to advise and represent predominantly private sector employees and employers in all areas of employment/labor law compliance and litigation, including discrimination; harassment; leave laws; retaliation; wage and hour violations, including the Private Attorney General Act (PAGA); misclassified independent contractors; employees misclassified as exempt from overtime and meal/rest break laws; Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices; wrongful termination; and unfair competition.
Ms. Reynolds also advises and represents clients with any unemployment/payroll tax law issue, including Employment Development Department (EDD) tax audits, unemployment insurance and state disability income (SDI) appeals before the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board (CUIAB), and administrative writ(s) of mandate opposing California’s Attorney General Office. Ms. Reynolds represents employees and employers through arbitration, mediation, pre-litigation negotiations including demand letters, reinstatement, settlement, severance, bench trial(s) and appeal(s). Additionally, Ms. Reynolds counsels employer clients through all stages of the employment relationship, from hiring to firing, layoff or quit, including through discipline to separation, and compliance throughout.
Ms. Reynolds advises her clients in effort to retain good employees and avoid legal claims. However, when the inevitable charge or complaint is filed, Ms. Reynolds either zealously, yet effectively, defends employers, from the initial filing through resolution, or Ms. Reynolds files complaints against offending employers to make her employee clients whole. In addition to representing clients in small claims appeals to unlimited and complex civil litigation, Ms. Reynolds also represents clients before such agencies as the Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), Department of Industrial Relations Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DIR-DLSE) i.e. Labor Commission, Department of Labor (DOL), Employment Development Department (EDD), Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA).

Sat, 10 Aug 2019 - 27min - 113 - AML 126: The Third Wave: Surfing the Emerging Streaming Landscape #MusicBiz2019
I had the pleasure of attending AML super fan Iredumare (Ire) Opeyemi’s panel session held on May 6, 2019, at the Music Biz 2019 conference in Nashville, produced by the Music Business Association. If you have been following this blog and podcast for a while, then you know seven years ago, Ire stumbled on the blog, became a super fan and my mentee, all while he was in law school, and the rest is history. Ire’s panel session was titled ‘The Third Wave: Surfing the Emerging Streaming Landscape’ and focused on the emerging streaming landscape in Nigeria/Africa, China and Eastern Europe.
The panelists discussed the opportunities and barriers their respective markets presented, and the networks, financial and market dynamics that new entrants needed to understand. It was a good and informative discussion. With respect to Africa, I enjoyed Ire’s emphasis that new entrants must approach the market with a commitment to invest in the continent’s infrastructure, in order to win.
I am republishing, with permission, the audio clip from the session courtesy of Boomplay for you the AML audience. On the AML end, please note the audio clip went into a little post-production editing to maximize sound quality, the substance remains unaltered. Listen, enjoy, share.
NOTE: If you want to hear more about Nigeria and Africa’s streaming markets, revisit AML Podcast episode 123 where I had Ire as a guest, along with Graeme Gilfillan (South Africa) for an in-depth discussion on the topic.

Last month, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced they were bringing a pro league to Africa, The Basketball African League. According to the duo, the initial plan is for a 12-team league from across the continent to begin playing in January 2020. To create awareness for the new league, the NBA enlisted some of Africa’s top musicians through a partnership with Universal Music Group Brands. The partnership saw the NBA invite and host Nigeria’s Ycee, South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest, Sho Madjoze, Moozlie, and Tanzania’s Vanessa Mdee at the NBA All-Star weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina, held last month.
As the excitement continues to build about the new league, and the global sports industry turn their attention on the continent, the question is, what is the real state of the sports industry on the continent and what are some of the pressing issues affecting the industry?
On the 124th episode of The Africa Music Law Show, Sports and Entertainment Lawyers Beverley Agbakoba-Onyejianya and Ojonoka Agudah join Ms. Uduak, a fashion and entertainment lawyer, host, and producer of the show, to answer these questions.
It is a highly informative episode. Listen, share and don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) releases an annual report that provides a comprehensive state of the global recorded music industry, which includes data and analysis. However, historically, Africa has not appeared on the radar of this report. In 2016, it did. IFPI gave a nod to the recorded music market in Africa, but in a few lines that told us, “streaming is taking licensed music into markets where record companies previously were not active,”followed with a quote from Beggars Group founder and chairman, Martin Mills, that Beggars was for the first time licensing music in Nigeria, Uganda, and Angola. This 2019 was no different from the IFPI annual report, which in a few lines acknowledged the entrance of the majors into the African music space. Another agency, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), has attempted to value the African music market and provide its own data and analysis. While its efforts are laudable, many industry stakeholders agree its efforts don’t quite paint an accurate picture of Africa’s music market, particularly, Nigeria’s, the giant of Africa.
But, for the first time ever, armed with as accurate a data as possible directly from stakeholders in the trenches of Africa’s music industry, Africa’s leading music market, Nigeria, speaks for itself and assesses its own value with the inaugural ‘Nigerian Recorded Music Industry Report.’ The report is produced by the Disruptive Creative Economy Meeting (DCEM). DCEM’s Olumide Mustapha, a Nigeria, and UK licensed entertainment attorney who spearheaded the report, joins Ms. Uduak, founder, producer, and host of The Africa Music Law Show Podcast and a California based Fashion and Entertainment lawyer, to breakdown the report (the domination of digital, CRBT/ringtones, streaming, synchronization) and what it means for industry stakeholders across the entire local and global music value chain. The Africa Music Law Show is a podcast show empowering the African artist and the creative industry, locally and globally.
It is a must listen and must share episode.
