It makes me happy to see my brothers and sisters getting Capoeira out there to the public, engaging with schools and spreading the word, bringing real change to other people’s lives!
Getting Capoeira out there is our job as teachers, there are many Capoeiristas putting in the work to get more Capoeira information to the public and the local communities, while we have others complaining and waiting for change while sitting at home doing nothing! The work gets done out there, not just on a cute post on social media.

The day I turn Mestre, I still will support my friends doesn’t matter their Capoeira level, even if they are just instructors, because I know we are friends, I know for a fact that I don’t need an invitation, even a text invitation, I will show up if I can make it!! But should I show up to an Instructor Class/Event event I have a higher title? Is that disrespectful?… What are your thoughts??

These are the questions we ask ourselves so we can organize our ideas and execute them! All these points are connected one with another, if one of them doesn’t work that means I have to rethink to see if it can improve or just change plans! * Is it Flight?Event fees:
* Can I assist full event (because of work) and how much is a full event?
* Is there early bird or group pricing? Because I will register early to take advantage of this.
* Food:I have an average price per meal that can help me manage my money better.Extras:Can I buy extra stuff for sale at events?
2- Time:
* Do I know about this event 1 year, 6 months, 3 months, or 1 month in advance? – The more time I have to plan my travels, the better. This can determine how I can manage my time with my job and classes situation. I do not travel to events with 1 month notice time!
3- Distance:
* If events are longer than 5 hours drive I might flight
* If events are within 5 hours drive, it is also fun to drive and enjoy the drive!

Well pay attention and you will see how common this happens, these two ways of clapping in the Roda have their meanings and their specific ways of playing, especially “Palma de Terreiro” from Candomble to Samba de Roda, to many others within many cultural expressions in the Brazilian Culture.

Learning from the roda is such an awesome experience for all of us Capoeiristas, we can learn from watching or playing. I love analyzing other’s games to see how I can apply their ways to my own Capoeira game, engaging in the Capoeira game and getting to understand how it works can be very complex (but not hard) to understand, we just gotta watch a lot of games, and know what to look for. Every game is going to be different and we are not always attacking or in the famous phrase “boca de espera”.
What do I look for when I’m watching a Capoeira game?. I am looking for opportunities, I am looking at timing, directions or angles, when and how I can apply what I know in that game. This is not something that applies to every single game, but once you start looking for those details, you can understand how and where to get out in different scenarios.

Anything we want to accomplish in life we are going to need to make sacrifices, even if we break it down we are making sacrifices every single day, we are just don’t see them consciously.
Normally we only see the results of the sacrifices, but we don’t really know what others had to sacrifices for them to be there and obtained the results we see. There are many successful people (whatever success means to you) that all I see is people saying how lucky they were to be where they are or just criticize them for the amount of success they have achieved. We all just see the result of the hard work today!
I have been sacrificing so many things not just for Capoeira, but also outside of Capoeira too, I had to sacrifice a lot of stuff for me to be able to be where I am today. It has been 20 years of many sacrifices for Capoeira for me to love, and feel really passionate about this, to the point that I wanted to make this podcast to share that passion with the world.

In the same way, when I started Capoeira, there was a pretty dominant rivalry between our old Instructors and the Instructors and teachers from another group, but we, the newer generation broke that cycle and started to make a big difference in our Capoeira community!!

What can we do as Capoeira Community in the US to adopt a system that works in another country?… As a huge and older Community, we could learn from other younger communities that have been growing very fast since they have been established. Mestre Edan has been educating over 200 Capoeira teachers and over 10,000 students; this is not about groups or Capoeira style, it is about a system in place that has been working since 1999 till now. What can we learn from them?
3 Pillars of a Good Capoeirista:
1 – The Academy: the place to learn and share, a safe place where you get to try things you can learn from your friends.
2 – Your Home: You practice in the academy, then you go home and you work hard so when you go back to the academy it is much better because everybody can learn from you.
3 – The World: You go out and search for stuff, you bring it to your home, you train it and then you bring it to the academy, so everybody goes home and trains.

In this episode I had the amazing pleasure to interview Mestre Edan (@edan ) all the way from Israel, one of the Capoeira pioneers in Israel, using an awesome strategy to build a community, using some army tactics, “you build an army you start a school for officers because the officers are going to train the soldiers”.
This made Capoeira so big in Israel that now Capoeira gives a very hard time to Judo, everyone knows what Capoeira is, what can we learn from that? and How can we apply the same system here in the USA and make our Capoeira schools grow so big, that we can give hard times to another martial arts?
He also told us the story behind The Instructor Course (by the way, this course can be done by any level, not only instructors) and how he specializes in kids… Wait for Part II next week.

There is Capoeira anywhere in the world, letting you know that Capoeira is about people, not where you are from, what you speak, how you look like, or what Capoeira style you do. But something I can tell you for sure, once Capoeira touches your heart, I promise, you are gonna love it!
When I got my very first ceremony in the Yoruba religion I learn so much about how much you need to respect people. They taught me that the heart of the religion is people, without people there is no energy, and without the energy, there is nothing to love.

for the last few months, I have seen people talking about ancestors, but in reality, we are not getting connected with them, we are getting so trapped in the social media world that we are forgetting about doing our homework. What would it happen if Mestre Pastinha received the monetary value he deserved, with all his knowledge and all his contribution to the Capoeira history? He probably wouldn’t go in such bad living conditions, sadly he got more value after he was gone.
Mestre Pastinha was one of the biggest pioneers of Capoeira in Brazil, he did many researches, including traveling all the way to Africa looking for answers.
We in the Capoeira community should not be ashamed to talk about money, wanting to make a living with what we love, to sustain our lives and families with what we dedicate so much time, energy, sweat, smiles, and sometimes tears. It should not be hard for us to make a living with Capoeira.
We, the teachers should have at least a basic understanding of financial education, what is actually a liability and asset, and much more. let’s get educated about money, so we can provide higher quality classes to our students and community, but also provide for our families with what we love doing!!

We all learn in different ways, some of us are slow learners (like myself) or some are fast learners, some of us are visual (like me) and some of us are theoretical, we also can be hands-on and learn from the experience rather from the books (like myself).
We can be excellent at whatever we do, but recreating that in other people, with different ways of learning is a WAY different story, know how to teach, know how to control your emotions during the class, and know how to explain what you are passing is not an easy task, it is something that takes time, a lot of practice and a lot of experience to create an excellent class, and of course, every teacher has a way of teaching, but we gotta know how to bring all the students up, with lacking the empathy of having a good Capoeirista in and out of Capoeira.

Just to you know, this course is not about a group or group methodology, the purpose of this course is to help you understand teaching techniques, which is an excellent tool not very common in Capoeira!
Teaching is not easy at all, it can be intimidating at the beginning, and sometimes overwhelming especially when you don’t know what and how to teach next (there’s no school or college program that teaches us how to teach Capoeira, if there is one, let me know).

I was really closed to stop teaching classes, but I changed my mind after my last trip to Fortaleza, Brazil, I had the opportunity to meet amazing Capoeiristas, and also watch them playing in the roda!! Amazing Capoeiristas there!!!! Till I had the chance to have a conversation with one of them, where we talked about finding your own motivation when there’s little to non-Capoeira in your city, where you have to travel far to find a Capoeira class.
I will never forget this conversation because I told him how difficult it was for me to keep my motivation back then, which he responded “Caxixi, I’ve been there, and I know how you feel, so here is my advice for you, YOU HAVE TO WIN THE WAR IN YOUR HEAD, because if you win that war, you will find the fire and keep it”…

If you own a Berimbau, or even if you not, you know that watching a cabaça getting completely unusable, hurts so much, especially if that the only Berimbau you have, sometimes those cabaças can be completely broken, either in half, or a small crack, or even worse than that… broken in little pieces!!…
The first thought is “well I lost my cabaça, so I’m gonna throw this cabaça away and one day gets a new one”. I have been there many times.
I have dropped cabaça before, I have seen many scenarios, but in the end, they all are painful to see!

I’ve seen it myself, when ALL Capoeiras work with one single purpose, which is benefit our communities through Capoeira and respecting others, the growth that Capoeira has as a community itself, is massive!!… Capoeira in Venezuela grew huge because we all work together to help each other.
If unity becomes just for the benefit of a few, instead of the whole, or when “unity” is use for a selective few in a selective circle, then it is not unity anymore, it becomes exclusivity!

During all these years in Capoeira, I have seen -and if you have been around long enough, I am sure you have too, a lot of people, either, switching groups (like myself), switching supervision (like myself), or quitting Capoeira (not like myself lol)… But all this is for a reason, sometimes we just lose our north, or sometimes we lose motivation, or sometimes… We just don’t feel quite there, ya know?!
But once we find what where we want to go, and what we need to do (and sacrifice) to get where we want to be, we can find that group, or person that can guide us, or mentor us.
SPIRITUALITY: just a heads up here, when I talk about this subject, I am not referring to a religion, nor god(s). I am referring to a internal and deep connection within yourself. We all are spiritual being that are in this borrowed body for a limited time. As I have done myself, we can make that connection with that internal spirit with Capoeira, specifically with Capoeira music.

Learning Berimbau is key to have a wider understanding of Capoeira, however, once you learn HOW TO PLAY the basic Capoeira rhythms, play them on many rodas, and after A LOT of practice, it is time for you to understand how and when to play those rhythms. Do you know what role plays the Gunga, Medio, or Viola? Do you know when to play Angola or Sao Bento Pequeno, and which Berimbau plays what?… In fact, all this depends on HOW YOUR GROUP plays the Capoeira rhythms, and that is why I had the awesome pleasure of having my 3 really good friends, Prof. Congo, Prof. Soquete, and Inst. Capoeira Rhythms are composed of 3 basic sounds (at least the basic rhythms). This is how I break it down, use them if it is very useful to you, or share it with someone that is learning how to play Berimbau… By the way, to practice Berimbau rhythms you don’t need a Berimbau, it will help if you have one, but honestly, it is not 100% necessary!! (THIS IS HOW I LEARNED), however, talk to your Capoeira School leader to find one for you!
These 3 sounds are:
Xiado: with the rock very softly pressed against the wireDon: rock/dobrado doesn’t touch the wireDin: press the rock/dobrado hard against the wire
now that you have and recognize these 3, you are going to practice these sounds with your mouth first (I know, I know you are gonna feel silly, so what)
for example:
“Xiado” you are going to do the sound: xi xi xi xi xi“Don”: don don don don“Din”: din din din din
Practice this EVERY SINGLE TIME before you do it on the Berimbau!!
Practice those sounds every day with your mouth so you can recognize these sounds. If at some point you listen to capoeira music anywhere, pay attention to the Berimbau and try to copy/follow the sounds I just gave you with your mouth!! (JUST DO IT)
Rhythm practice:
Now we put them together in a specific pattern to do the first rhythm, “Angola”makes this sound with your mouth – warning: don’t be shy to do so!
The are 2 xiados, 1 don, 1 din:
Angola Rhythm: xi xi – don – din – pause
Repeats over and over!
São Bento Pequeno
The are 2 xiados, 1 din, 1 don
It sounds like: xi xi – din – don – pause
It repeats over and over too
Practice these 2 with your mouth and with the berimbau so you can get into the more complex ones
São Bento Grande de Bimba
This one is a little more complex but it is pretty easy once you get it
I’m going to break it in 2 parts for you
The first part is:1st: xi xi – don – xi xi – din
2nd: xi xi – don – don – din
It repeats over and over too
São Bento Grande de Angola
This one is a little easier and fun as well
It sounds like: xi xi – din – don – don
It repeats over and over too
All these sounds are very easy to practice, you just gotta commit and keep practicing with your mouth but especially with the berimbau and ask your teacher to help you practice some music and I am sure you are going to be able to play berimbau in a few months if you really really practice this tips and tricks.

Today I look back, I can see how much Capoeira has changed my life for great, and it makes me happy every time I look back. I also have made so many friends, can’t even put a number on them because they are so so so many, in Venezuela, Brazil, the USA, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and many other countries in Europe, and I cannot wait to meet more people.
I get the opportunity to travel all over the world just because Capoeira!

Top 3 ways I take care of my students
3 – Form: Their form can prevent or create injuries.2 – Organized: The order we teach them the basics.1 – I stay informed: I study and keep fresh information.
I would not definitely teach something to my students something that I do not know, or something I have no idea what I am talking about for many reasons:
1: Misinformation can lead to not desired results, and also making the person stop coming to class.
2: It will not build credibility in my information.

A call to all the Capoeira community: we have to stay together, we have to grow together, Capoeira is not a competitive ground of how is better than who, Capoeira is not a ground of which is school is better that which school. Capoeira is for all of us, Capoeira was made by our ancestor to bring us together, to enjoy each other in a very spiritual way, to connect us beyond eye vision, to connect us mentally, spiritually, and connect our energy. Let’s support each other, without looking Capoeira style, without looking Capoeira group, without looking Capoeira skills, and respecting each other way to be, let’s travel and play Capoeira with people just because we CAN!! Because we have each other!! The world is already dark, let’s not be the first in line trowing that darkness to each other!!
We are Capoeira Community, let’s actually show what that means!!

There are many many ways for us to connect with/to Capoeira, and here are a few examples:
Always show up to class, starting with your teacher, support 100% of your class by showing up, getting material from your teachers such as instruments, t-shirts, hats, pants, or any material provided by them.
Learning the history behind Capoeira, or ask your teacher to help with that.
Learn Brazilian culture or ask about it, which will give you a basic understanding of what Capoeira is today days. You will be surprised by how everything is connected.
Learn Instruments; I would repeat this so much, learn Berimbau (I’m going to do a follow up with my previous Berimbau episode), learn atabaque and pandeiro, those are the basics and essential for Capoeira!
And again I am going to keep saying this, learn Portuguese, that is going to give you so much understanding of this amazing art, trust me with this, you will be happy how much you can learn by understanding Portuguese!
