The story highlights the challenges faced by the school nurse in trying to protect the health of all students, including her own daughter who has an autoimmune condition, without the backing of mandatory vaccination policies. Overall, the episode demonstrates how Donald Trump’s promise to defund schools with vaccine mandates could have devastating consequences for children's health and safety. Authoritarian propaganda is full of empty promises of unity. Of uniting the nation under a leader who alone can fix it. To keep democracy’s head above water in 2024 the Democrats need what’s called a trifecta - meaning the Presidency, the House and the Senate - and keeping the senate is going to be a tough slog because Democrats have what’s called a “bad map”. So today, instead of talking about the must win swing races we hear about all the time, we’re going to discuss two Senate races that almost no-one is paying attention to. Two Senate races practically no-one is investing in, because it’s assumed they’ve already been won by Republicans when the truth is they haven’t. American Democrats often function in this weird defeatist culture where we keep fighting over the same 6 states and seeding other states to Republicans with the assumption they’re lost and no Democrat can ever win there. It’s not fair to the people who have different opinions in those states. It’s not fair to the people who lose their rights thanks to Republican policies, and it’s not democratic. People should have a candidate to vote for, and that candidate should have the opportunity to win. So today’s episode includes two women, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (or DMP) from Florida and Katrina Christiansen from North Dakota. We’re going to hear their stories and remind ourselves that no state should be written off. That everybody deserves a chance to be represented in America and with so much on the line, we need to support every Democrat running. I’ve been watching what’s been happening on college campuses with real uncertainty. I don’t believe we’re getting the full story from the media. Much like the horserace neck and neck BS they’re peddling for the election, I feel as if traditional media is pushing narratives with the protests that don’t tell the full picture and it leaves people feeling outraged or confused. As today’s guest David Rothkopf says, “If you want this crisis to be simple, you’re looking in the wrong place. It’s not simple. It’s difficult and it requires grown-ups who have a sense of history and the ability to weigh different and competing ideas at the same time.” As David so aptly points out, our tendency to be tribal has turned these conflicts on college campuses into a Rorschach test where we often end up seeing what we want to see. As Robert Reich said, “There should be nothing inherently anti-Semitic about condemning the ongoing destruction in Gaza”. And yet…that is not how it’s always playing out. The crisis in the Middle East, like so many issues that truly matter, is complicated and nuanced and simply won’t fit on a bumper sticker. It’s essential that we look at the whole picture and move beyond who needs to be punished (and many do) to set a goal of creating a place of peace and stability. This is also not an isolated issue. Governments around the world are shifting to the far right and supporting each other as they do it. So, whether it’s Putin, Netanyahu, Hamas or Trump, they’re all looking out for number one, and we need to be supporting alternatives who want everyone to succeed, not simply the select few. At the end of the day we need to hold two ideas in our heads at once. Palestinian people deserve a state of their own, without Israeli occupation, and Israel deserves to exist in safety and security in the midst of a hostile region. It’s an incredibly difficult needle to thread, but a peaceful coexistence is what anyone who believes in the rights of humanity should want. The majority of youth in America are not on board for the new extremist Republican agenda. They believe in reproductive rights, and that the climate is in crisis. In honor of Labor Day we’re going to talk about the importance of the American worker, but more specifically about the importance of union work. American workers have clearly had enough. The majority of us know we can’t carry on like this. That the wealth inequality and the growing chasm between workers and owners is leading this country down a dark path. At their peak, 40% of American workers were part of a union, now that number is under 7%, and look what’s happened - the rich got richer while the poor got poorer and the middle class has all but disappeared. People can’t afford homes, food or health care, and the majority of us have to take a side hustle or gig work on top of our regular jobs just to make ends meet. It’s unsustainable, and the workers of America are beginning to stand in solidarity against it. We know the conservative movement wants to return us to “a better time”, what they see as the “natural order”, with the white, straight Christian man on top, but even those who see themselves as liberal or centrist can struggle with the idea of changing the status quo, because it feels like a potential losing proposition for people who have always been at the top. That people who would be outwardly opposed to MAGA still feel uncomfortable with all these calls for equality and respect, especially when it’s perceived to question their judgment, or status in society. Nostalgia is a powerful part of the human condition, and it can easily become the filter through which every political, social, and cultural piece of information is absorbed. So if a political movement offers to bring back what has supposedly been lost, or at least keep us at status quo, it’s hard to resist because it speaks directly to the anxieties people have around the social and cultural change America has been undergoing over the past century. Christian nationalists believe that America is defined by Christianity, and the government should be taking active steps to keep it that way. This is completely antithetical to how our nation was actually set up, but they now have their hands in so many pots - from education, to voting, to human rights - and are backed by such an large amount of dark money, with seemingly endless connections, that the bottom line is if we don’t wake up to the danger of this movement, which in many ways runs parallel with the white nationalist moment and, these days MAGA Republicans, then we’re going to wake up in the near future to realized we live in some version of a Christian autocratic theocracy where our laws, lifestyles, even our morality is dictated by a select few, and the only choices we’ll have left will be conform or suffer. It’s hard not to be cynical about American politics and the American experiment with all that’s going on, but the truth of the matter is we have tremendous leadership right now. The country is doing extremely well. Legislation that became law over the past two years is set to become tangible reality in the next two. Yes, we are looking at an increasingly undemocratic Republican Party who can’t even compromise with itself long enough to get their speaker elected, but we’re also looking at competent, fresh new leadership to counter them, along with new factories, new jobs, new infrastructure. We’re looking at lower drug prices and major corporations paying taxes for the first time. We’re going to have universal broadband for all our citizens, gun legislation and climate protections. This is our last episode before the break, and I can’t imagine closing out the year without a dedicated conversation about democracy, so today’s pod is a Candid Conversation with democracy’s super lawyer Marc Elias. Marc is an American Democratic Party elections lawyer who served as general counsel for the Hillary Clinton and John Kerry presidential campaigns, and is the founder of the Elias Law Group who oversaw the state by state response to the 60+ Trump campaign lawsuits contesting the 2020 presidential election, where he won all but one minor case, which was later overturned in his favor. It is Marc and the Elias Group who, as the Republicans and their allies turn their attention to using litigation as a weapon against democracy, have been at the front line fighting back.
