ROPE ACCESS LEVEL 4? - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST  

Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I’m chatting about if the Rope Access industry needs a level 4.  

Now this episode is based mostly on my personal feelings about the subject and well I end up going down a bit of a rabbit hole here but all and all I think I get back to the point of the subject.  I know that our current system has worked for the most part for 30+ years, but at some point, we have to adapt to change.  

One of the biggest challenges IRATA has taken on is introducing the RAMRASS program that is still in the works and has been for going on 10ish years and I’ll talk about this is another episode.

PROBABILITY OVER CONSEQUENCE - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST

Many of people will know this as Likelihood over severity and that’s fine too.  I have found it really comes down to the different industry you’re working in.

Now to understand Probability over Consequence you also have to understand what Risk Tolerance is and the difference between Risk/Hazard is.

No matter what you do, no matter who you are.  You are contently playing a game of Probability over Consequence.

I know personally this was never my intent.  Sadly people talk about the industry is small.

WHEN SHOULD YOU UPGRADE TO LEVEL 2 - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST

Today I’m chatting about when you should upgrade from level 1 to level 2.  SPRAT or IRATA, my thoughts are the same.  I think everyone should upgrade as soon as possible.  No matter what everyone else out there says. I think that this is the most important step in the process.  Then feel free to stay a Level 2 as long as possible.   

This stage may be where SPRAT and IRATA need to focus on adjusting the requirements to upgrade.

RESPECTING OUR MANUFACTURES - TECH TALK / PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST  

Hello and welcome back to the Rope Access and Climbing Podcast YouTube addition.  Today I’m chatting about having respect for our manufactures.    We have all seen it, someone gets a new item they are all happy with it.  Then they miss use it or don’t use it as it was designed and then the first thing they do is go to Social Media to complain about how crappy it is and the company sucks.    

Well, that is NOT the way you should deal with the situation.  You should always reach out to the manufacture to explain your situation and see if they've had similar outcomes.  Everything we use has limitations. Also, not every item is designed with your job in mind.   

Manufacturers, rely on us the consumer to help them build better equipment.  But you bashing them online isn’t going to help you or anyone else.

THE BREADTH OF EXPERIENCE -  PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST  

Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. This week I wanted to chat to you about something that came to mind this week as I was hanging off the side of a building.  Yes, Not hanging of some massive structure in the Oil and Gas Industry, hanging off a building 175’ feet off the ground as people walk past.   

Today I want to touch base on, the subject of experience.  This is something that is earned not just given.  This is something that our industries is lacking.  This is something that we as end-users need to change.   

Sadly, there aren’t enough people in our industries that have this Breadth of Experience in their logbooks, me included.  This is something that I have been trying to work on ever since I left Acuren in 2018.  Yes, sadly I haven’t been able to do as much as I’ve wanted for whatever the reason has been.   

But this is something that moving forward I want to work on more.   

And you should too!  

At the end of the day, we need to make our industries better and safer.  1 of the ways we can actively work on that is this.  So, challenge yourself this year. Do one or two jobs short or long, in an industry that you haven’t worked in before.

ROPE ACCESS NUMBERS - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST    

Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I’m chatting about Rope Access Numbers.  

Not the number of people in the industry or the number of things that have gone wrong.  But the Measurements we seem to talk about in our industry.  

Last week (JULY 11/21) I posted a tech talk video on How to Right Large Y-Hangs. (Click Here: https://youtu.be/EkbjLWes6AU ).  In this video, I used the Measurement 1.5m.  

I would have to say that the industry norm is 1.5m for Y-Hangs, and such.  Well, it’s not 100% correct.  

Y-Hangs are defined as Small or Large: 

IRATA: 1M
SPRAT: 2M  

Re-Anchors – Small or Large: 

IRATA: 1.5M
SPRAT: 2M  

Deviations – Single or Double: 

IRATA: 20Degrees or 1.5M
SPRAT: 20Degrees  

Now with this being said, SPRAT and IRATA require you to Double up the Rigging on Y-Hangs or Deviations no matter the distance if there is a chance of a Failure of the Rope Access System if the one side of the anchor device were to fail.  So, if you are rigging a Y-hang or a Deviation to avoid a super-hot surface.  Then it has to be doubled up anyway, so the rule of distance goes out the window.   

So, why are we so focused on the distance, when we should be focused on training/mentoring our techs better?  The IRATA TACS and SPRAT Certification Requirements for Rope Access Work are only guidelines.    

So, hit me up in the comments or on Instagram and let’s chat about this.  Maybe make another episode on this about my findings.  Should it be a big deal that the difference is ½ a meter or a meter?  Or should we just agree to disagree that 1.5m is good enough across the board and IRATA/SPRAT should just meet in the middle?  (1.5 METERS)

SOMETHING I DIDN'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST

Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. I have avoided having this conversation for a while now, but it’s come to the point where I need to get this off my chest. Over the past year, the pandemic has changed the way we work, it has changed how we live our daily lives, and it has created challenges (physical, mental, financial etc.) for many of us.  Due to my current work situation, I am in quarantine (AGAIN!), and felt like it was time to discuss what we can all do to keep each other safe, and to make sure that your friends, family, and co-workers are doing ok.

Check in with your neighbors, think about how your actions affect those around you, and let’s move forward to bigger and better things together!

K2 WINTER EXPEDITION 2021 - WITH MINGMA G SHERPA – INTERVIEW – THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST   

Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I am sitting down with Leo and Michael from Everest 2021 and special guest Mingma G Sherpa who was part of the Nepali mountaineering team who, on January 16th 2021, completed the first successful winter ascent of K2 in Pakistan.  We dive into Mingma G’s mountaineering background, climbing 8000m peaks without oxygen, and how putting ego’s aside help this team succeed in their mission to make this expedition possible.

With Covid and everything else going on in the world, there has been a massive increase of people heading into the backcountry, but before doing so please make sure to take the proper training and get the knowledge before venturing outside of the ski area or local climbing gym.   

I have always said. "The mountains have a way of dealing with overconfidence"

ROPE PROTECTION WITH JAMES HOLLINGSWORTH - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST

There is no, one rope protector that does it all.  But there are some that are better than others.

THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA - The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast

Most companies do not allow workers to share images of jobs they are on, but that does not always stop people from doing it anyway. Even when it is allowed, supervisors are often upset that photos showing rigging, or locations of jobs are going public.   

I enjoy seeing posts of different jobs, rigging, and new uses of gear from other industries, but sadly not everyone out there feels the same way.    

Social media can be a great place to share jobs, techniques, and cool views from work sites. It can be a great tool to learn from but it can also create negative conversations.
