Yearning for God's Presence: A Look at Psalms 42

This psalm expresses a deep longing for God's presence. The speaker feels like a deer panting for streams of water, desperately thirsty for a God they feel distant from. Throughout the psalm, the speaker wrestles with doubt and despair, remembering past times of joy and communion with God. Yet, even in the midst of their struggles, they hold onto a flicker of hope, trusting that God will once again grant them favor and allow them to return to worship in his temple.

Psalm 40

Psalm 40 begins with a high-flight of thanksgiving and ends with a mixture of prayer and lament similar to Ps 27 . Furthermore, the last 5 verses of Ps. 40 are nearly identical to Ps. 70.

Crucial associations surface throughout this psalm. The first is between the theocratic king as an individual and the community of the theocratic people. Beyond this, from the vantage point of New Testament revelation, an association with Jesus  is contained in seed form.

This psalm allows those who are suffering to express their confusion to God. The circumstances of the suffering are left vague, although there is acknowledgment of sin in verse  8 and 11. Suffering is a reminder of how fleeting human life is.

Psalm reading:

Psalms 38 -  In this lament, the singer lays his troubles before God, fully realizing that those troubles result from his own sin. The psalm describes anguish of body and mind, desertion by friends, and how the singer’s folly has made him vulnerable to enemies.

The title associates the psalm with the “memorial offering" mentioned in Leviticus 2:1-3

Psalm 37

Psalm 37 can be called a wisdom psalm because it reflects on themes normally dealt with in the Bible’s Wisdom Literature, particularly in Proverbs. It addresses the issue of why godless people often prosper. It shows that it really is better to stay loyal to the Lord—a loyalty expressed in contentment, honesty, and generosity. In his own good time, the Lord will make a clear distinction between the godless and the faithful. Meanwhile, the faithful must wait patiently.

Psalm 36

This is a lament that reflects on the wicked and on the steadfast love of the Lord. It concludes with a prayer that God will protect his people from the attacks of the wicked. Psalms 25 - In this psalm David wrestles with the heavy issues of life, avoiding denial and affirming dependence. He must trust God in the face of his troubles and troublemakers.

These 22 verses follow an acrostic development (An acrostic is a poem in which the initial letters of each successive line form a word, phrase, or pattern. The acrostic Psalms tend to use the twenty-two letters with a few slight variations, of the Hebrew alphabet - the first word of the first verse beginning with aleph, the first word of the second verse beginning with bet, and so on.).

On a larger scale, the psalm develops chiastically:

Verses 1–7 and 16–22 are parallel sections of prayers for protection and deliverance, while the core,

vv. 8–15, contains affirmations about God and about His dealings with believers.

Psalms 24

This psalm has been labelled by some as an entrance ceremony , by others, a hymn of praise, and yet by others, a mixture of both elements. Its occasion might have been  the time of the bringing of the ark to Jerusalem.

The early church designated it messianically as an ascension psalm.

This psalm contains one of the best-known passages of the OT. It is a testimony by David to the LORD’s faithfulness throughout his life. As a hymn of confidence, it pictures the LORD as a disciple’s Shepherd. David, by using some common ancient Near Eastern images, progressively unveils his personal relationship with the LORD in three stages.

Psalm 22

This psalm shows  with a great contrast in mood.

Lament characterizes the first 21 verses, while praise and thanksgiving  are there in the last 10 verses. Prayer accounts for this dramatic shift from lament to praise. It is the story of first being God-forsaken and then God-found and filled.

The New Testament  contains 15 messianic quotations of or allusions to this psalm, prompting  some in the early church to label it  as “the fifth gospel.” Psalm Reading by Moj K Raj

The first part of Psalms 21 is a thanksgiving for victory; the last part is an anticipation of future victories in the LORD through the king.

This Psalm along with Psalm 21  forms a pair of royal psalms. 

This Psalm  is a prayer that God will give success to the Davidic king, particularly in battle.  This Psalm in anticipation of a military campaign, commemorates a 3-phased ceremony regularly conducted by the people in the presence of God the Commander  on behalf of the king.

Psalms 19 - This is a Singing Psalm. In this psalm, God’s people celebrate His law as His supreme revelation of Himself. The psalm recounts the way the creation speaks of its Maker , and the way the Mosaic law addresses the soul . It ends with a call for a humble response.

This is David’s celebration of God’s saving help in answer to prayer when under threat from powerful enemies . It is a psalm of thanksgiving. This Psalm occurs with minor variations in 2 Samuel 22 .

Psalms 17 - Sherin Roshan

This Psalm is a  lament to the Lord as Judge when David is under attack by ungodly foes.  The psalm reflects many of the Hebrew conventions of lodging a judicial appeal before the king. It  brims with petitions, as many as seventeen of them.

Psalm 15 unfolds through a question-and-answer session. It contains 12 instructions concerning those who wish to have access to God at his tabernacle.

This is a Psalm of Trust and a prayer for safe-keeping. The only prayer of this Psalm comes in the first line. Psalms 14 - ESV

Psalm 14 is a Wisdom Psalm. It is a testimony concerning the moral folly of those who live as if there were no God and therefore feel free to cruelly prey on others who are at their mercy.

Ps 13 starts  with a four  “How longs?” indicating a  lament is about to begin. But David will  then  shift  gears from turmoil to tranquility in the space of six short verses .

Psalms 12 Men’s words   hurt, but the LORD’s words heal. These thoughts preoccupy David in Psalms 12. The psalm begins and ends with the reality of the  reign of the wicked. In the midst of this dark setting Gods promise in verse 5 shines forth like a diamond.

Psalms 10 is closely related to Ps 9 and is probably one psalm. Whereas Psalms 9 started out with praise, Ps 10 begins in despair. In Ps 9 the psalmist was confident of the sure coming of Divine justice; in Ps 10 injustice is rampant and God seems disinterested. However, the psalmist’s walking more by sight than by faith will slowly turn around as he shifts his focus from empirical observations to theological facts. Psalms 11 - The mood of this Psalm is panic. But the panic that launched this psalm was not David’s but that of his apparently well-meaning counselors. Their mood is panic, but David’s is peace. However David had made up his mind to trust only in the LORD.

Psalm 9 is predominantly praise (by the king) for God’s deliverance from hostile nations. It concludes with a short prayer for God’s continuing righteous judgments on the haughty nations. Psalm 9 and 10 were treated as one Psalm in some Greek versions . Probably 9 -10 came to be separated for the purpose of separate liturgical use

Psalm 8 is a Nature Psalm – a Psalm of creation.

The beginning and ending of the psalm suggest that it is essentially a hymn of praise to God for the same. There is also a significant focus on the created dignity of man.

Psalm 7 is a plea for vindication from God in the light of the oppressor’s allegations and actions.

David’s confidence in the God, the Divine Judge is the backbone of this Psalm. As David understand this truth, he will move from a tense anxiety to divine assurance. This psalm follows David through three progressively calming stages of expression in response to the false accusations that were being hurled against him

Psalm 6 is an individual lament from David. It describes a person whose hard circumstances have led him to see his sins and to repent. Thus, it is often considered one of the “penitential” Psalms

Psalm 5 is in essence a lament with expressions of innocence and confidence followed by prayers for protection. David was standing in the presence of the LORD when he put his enemies before his God. His prayers have two major concerns: “Help me and harm them!”

In this Psalm ,at the end of yet another day of pressure, pain, and persecution in his life , David engages in three conversations with God which ultimately lead to a point of blessed relaxation.

This encouraging Psalm intermingles both lament and confidence.

It becomes a pattern for praise, peace, and prayer amidst pressure. Here, David shares his theological “secret” of having assurance in the face of adversity.

Psalm 2 was probably written by David.

The Psalm moves from the” lesser David “through the Davidic dynasty to the “Greater David”—Jesus Christ.

This Psalm shines its poetic spotlight on four striking scenes relating to the mutiny of mankind against God.

One of the most loved Psalms, this psalm functions as an introduction to the entire book of Psalms.

Its theme is as big as the whole Bible because it tells of people, their paths, and their final destinations The Book of Psalms is part hymnbook, part prayer book, part wisdom literature, and part anthology of poems concerning Israel and God. Its subject matter is astonishingly broad. On one hand it proclaims praise and prayer for God Most High (Psalms 50:14), and on the other, it embraces human experience as intimate as lamenting a lost mother (Ps. 35:14).

Psalms is distinctive in the Old Testament in that most of it consists of people talking to God.
