Sumi & Ashley

What if you could step comfortably into your own unique identity, erase societal expectations that have conditioned you since birth, and love your life exactly as it is right now today while also confidently pursuing your audacious goals for the future? We help you feel confident in their independence, take control of your finances, set and achieve ambitious goals… and feel fabulous doing it. Your hosts - women of color themselves - a USC Professor and a Harvard Grad have faced the same fears, challenges, and persevered as they’ve built ambitious lives and learned to love them exactly as they are Ashley, born to a single mother in small town Texas, worked her way up the corporate ladder at Fortune 500 brands and eventually into academia as an adjunct professor and curriculum creator.. She’s your go-to when you need practical, insider tips & tricks. Sumi, the daughter of immigrants, was nudged down a traditional path by her parents, building her first multi-million dollar consulting firm by the age of 24. After more than a decade subconsciously living for the approval of her Dad, she gained the courage to write her own rules and is now loving life as a recording artist in LA. She’s your go-to for straight-shooting advice and inspiration. Here's the thing - you're not living in a 90's rom-com where you'd be stuck playing the role of a funny sidekick. This is real life. You're the main character. Women Rewriting the Rules is going to help you take control, re-write your story, "mute" the haters, and start fulfilling your wildest (and totally realistic) dreams. We’ll show you how to redefine your happiness and make big things happen, no matter who says it’s not possible. If you’re ready to get out of your head, stop worrying so much, and be fully present in the moment while strategically going after your goals–stick around. We’re your people.

  • 44 - How to find Happiness at Work when things are Hard

Are you struggling to find happiness at work — or in your professional life? Ashley and Sumi are here with a lot ofreal talk as they unpack an issue that a lot of us women face. It starts with reevaluating where you want to end up on the corporate ladder in terms of what will provide you with the most happiness.

That can lead to questioning whether you are even on the right ladder— which may seem like aluxury of privilegeyou can’t afford when you’re providing for your family. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t startenjoying life now, because that is what we are fighting for, now — as our hosts so eloquently put it. It’s about equal equality, and equal opportunity, and as women rewrite the rules, they need to do with some enjoyment in their lives!

What this looks like is having a squad in the boardroom who can call out when you aren’t getting validation for your idea. It’s about transition sentences like “Building off of what So and So said” that gets you taken seriously as a woman of color in meetings where a ‘mediocre white male’ is hogging the limelight.

Developing an authoritative voice, not second-guessing yourself, and taking yourself seriously are some of the tools that we can use to rewrite the rules of how we conduct ourselves, leading to more personal happiness and a resultant shift in the power dynamics. There’s much more inside this authoritative episode of Women Rewriting the Rules. It’s time to be unapologetically yourself!

“It might actually be more enjoyable for me to sort of ‘reset’ how I’m thinking about building my career, that would allow me to feel more happiness in that.” ~ Ashley

“Loving what you do takes effort.” ~ Sumi
