Kirana gharana is one of the Indian classical khyal gharanas, and is concerned foremost with perfect intonation of notes (swara). The central concern of the Kirana style is swara, or individual notes, in particular precise tuning and expression of notes. In the Kirana Gayaki (singing style), the individual notes (swaras) of the raga are not just random points in the scale, but independent realms of music capable of horizontal expansion. Another unique feature of this gharana is the intricate and ornate use of the sargam taan (weaving patterns with the notations themselves) introduced by Abdul Karim Khan under influence from the Carnatic classical style. A Gold Medalist from the University of Delhi in Carnatic Music, she also has the distinction of topping the University in M.Phil. Deepti over the last two decades, along with the able support of her mother, Dr. Leela Omchery, an eminent musicologist and Padmasri Awardee has been doing intense research on the Traditional music of Kerala. She has contributed much to expanding and enhancing the Mohiniyattam repertoire and style by choreographing her research findings.

Sajan Mishra's name is always taken with his elder brother Rajan Mishra and their pair is called Mishra Brothers. Rajan (1951 - 2021) and Sajan (born 1956) Mishra were born and brought up in Varanasi. Madhup Mudgal was born in New Delhi to Professor Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, a renowned classical musician from the Gwalior gharana. His father started Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi in 1939 from their home near Plaza cinema, Connaught Place. Professor Vinay Chandra Maudgalya is best remembered today for the lyrics of the song Hind Desh ke Niwasi in the animation film Ek Anek Aur Ekta by Vijaya Mulay which won the National Film Award for Best Educational Film.[6] Because of his father's interests, Madhup grew up in a musical environment, where veteran musicians like Pt. Omkarnath Thakur and Ali Akbar Khan would come by regularly for sangeet baithaks (musical sittings). The school moved to its present location at Deen Dayal Upadhayaya Marg in 1972 and today houses over 1200 dance and music students and a faculty of 60 teachers. Madhup completed his early schooling at Modern School, New Delhi. He holds an M.A. and a MPhil degree from the Music Faculty of University of Delhi for his research in the structure of Khayal. He received his early training in Hindustani classical music from his father, and went on to learn under the tutelage of musicians like Pandit Vasant Thakar, Pandit Jasraj and finally the musical stalwart Kumar Gandharva.

The full melodic range and versatility of her voice provide a silhouette but they are never allowed to dominate the rendition by naturally sliding into vocal acrobatics. Her range of swaras has the ability to convey various bhavas (emotions). The improvisations made by her are generally rooted in the Gwalior gayaki, but carry her own distinct identity. Kalapini's wide repertoire of ragas and compositions is further supplemented by the presentation of the traditional songs of Malwa representing the folkore and ethnic flavour of the region. Kathak virtuoso Pandit Rajendra Gangani exclusive interview. Pandit Rajendra Gangani is one of the leading practitioners of the Jaipur Gharana style of Kathak. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003 for his contribution to the field of Kathak. This is the highest award given for performing arts in India, and Gangani received this award from Indian president A. P. J. Abdul Kalam.

Rajendra Kumar Gangani was born in the traditional family of Jaipur Gharana. He has started his training of Kathak Dance from his father Guru Kundan Lal Gangani at the early age of four in Jodhpur. An outstanding performer of Kathak, he has evolved a distinct and personal style. Though best known as a soloist, he has choreographed a number of productions including ‘Prakriti’, ‘Jhalak’, ‘Panchamukhi’ and ‘Anadi-Anant’. He has composed music for these works within the traditional format. He has also acquired proficiency in playing the Pakhawaj.  

Having performed extensively within the country, his performances have also taken him all over Europe, Middle East, Russia, and the United States.  As a Kathak Guru at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, he has made a significant contribution in grooming young dancers. He was awarded the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1991 and the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2002 from the former Hon’ble President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.  Rajendra Kumar Gangani joined Kathak Kendra on 07.08.1985 and presently he is working as Kathak Guru since September 1999.

Prerana Shrimali is a senior dancer of Jaipur Gharana of Kathak. Born in 1959 at Banswara in Rajasthan, Shrimati Prerana Shrimali was initiated in Kathak dance by Shri Gauri Shanker. Later, she was groomed in the art at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, under Shri Kundan Lal Gangani of the Jaipur gharana. She also learnt to play the Pakhawaj and studied vocal music.

Shrimati Prerana Shrimali is among the leading Kathak dancers of her generation. A versatile dancer, she has evolved an individual style in her presentation and gained wide popularity as a soloist. She has also choreographed several productions including Doosro Na Koi – Verses of Meera, Aavartan, Vistaar, Vivriti and Aaratis. She has participated in several international dance seminars and conferences and has presented Kathak in the Festival of India in the U.K., the Asian Performing Arts Festival in Japan, the Avignon Festival in France, and the Dance Festival in Switzerland. In the U.S., she has performed at Carnegie Hall, New York, and presented a series of performances in Jordan, Syria and Muscat. The Dagar Gharana Biography 

The Dagar gharana (or Dagar vani) is a tradition of the classical dhrupad genre of Hindustani classical music spanning 20 generations, tracing back to Swami Haridas (15th century), and including Behram Khan of Jaipur (1753-1878). For some generations its members were associated with the courts of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Mewar. The main feature of the Dagar gharana is sophisticated, subtle, serene and rigorous exposition of alap-jor-jhala, including great attention to microtonal inflection delineating the subtleties of raga often otherwise overlooked or lost. Until the 20th century, it was exclusively a vocal genre (at least in performance), but since the innovations of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar to the rudra vina, that instrument has found a place in performance, following closely the inflections and style of the vocal technique. The genre was carried into the 20th century by seven Dagar brothers and cousins: Aminuddin Dagar and Nasir Moinuddin (Senior Dagar Brothers), Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar, Nasir Zaheeruddin and Nasir Fayyazuddin (Junior Dagar Brothers), H. Sayeeduddin Dagar, and the brothers Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Zia Fariduddin Dagar. Zia Mohiuddin (rudra vina) and Zia Fareeduddin (vocal) were largely responsible for training today's practitioners, the most prominent of whom include Ritwik Sanyal, Pushparaj Koshti, Wasifuddin Dagar, Bahauddin Dagar, Asit Kumar Banerjee, Uday Bhawalkar, and the Gundecha Brothers.

After the demise of Zia Mohiuddin Dagar in 1990, he continued his training under his uncle Zia Fariddudin Dagar. Baha'ud'din Mohiuddin Dagar (born 1970) is the Rudra Veena player and son of famous north Indian musician Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. He plays Rudra Veena with the Dagarbani style. He represents the 20th generation of Dagar lineage, referring to Nayak Haridas Dagar of the 16th century. However, he traces his ancestry to Baba Gopal Das, who converted to Islam, and became Baba Imam Baksh in the 18th century, making him the representative of the 8th generation. In 2012, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest award for performing artists, conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy for Music, Dance, and Drama.
