Thu, 07 Nov 2024 - 3754 - Your Shortcut to... the US Election Part 5: The result
It’s been run and done - the US presidential election for 2024 has delivered victory to the Republicans and Donald Trump, and defeat to the Democrats and Kamala Harris. This week, we’ll get you across where Trump won and who voted for him, along with what the experts are saying about Harris’s defeat. And we’ll take a look at what comes next, including for the criminal cases pending against Trump… Squiz Recommends Reading: The thing that best sums up Trump’s victory are the swings he achieved in those key states. Axios has a series of graphs that show at a glance how the trend was in his favour. Reading: This election has been huge not just in America but also around the world - and in space. The American astronauts on the International Space Station got to vote, so in the interest of levity, here’s an article on how that works. Thu, 31 Oct 2024 - 3747 - Your Shortcut to... The US Election Part 4: Getting ready for next week's vote
After months of build-up, we’re days away from the 5th of November when Americans will head to the polls to vote for their next President. This week we’re looking at the people and issues to keep an eye on in these final days of campaigning and what experts are saying about the predicted outcome… Squiz Recommends: Reading: These 2 articles about Harris and Trump’s campaign directors who are both women. The first is a Politico piece about Trump’s campaign director, titled How Susie Wiles became the most feared and least known political operative in America… And the second is from the Los Angeles Times about the Democrats’ Julie Chavez Rodriguez. Reading: Katty Kay is a special correspondent from the BBC (with a great name) who’s also the co-host of The Rest is Politics US podcast, and she’s penned this piece about the gender divide in this election. Men overwhelmingly support Trump, and women overwhelmingly support Harris - so it’s a look at how that might affect the result. Tracking: And here’s that candidate tracker we spoke about To go back and listen to Parts 1-3 of our US election series, here are the links to do that: Part 1: How US elections work Part 2: The big domestic issues Part 3: The international issues Want the email version? Thu, 03 Oct 2024 - 3724 - Your Shortcut to... Fat Bear Week
This week marks the 10th year of Fat Bear Week, where people vote online for who they think is the fattest bear in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Preserve. It’s a lot of fun and an annual Squiz favourite - but there is a serious side to it too… So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at the competition and how the use of wildlife livecams is helping conservation efforts. Squiz recommends: Reading: An article from The Guardian called The Best Slow TV Ever about the Aussie study of those sea lions we mentioned. It’s fascinating to read how the team of scientists attached the cameras to the sea lions and what they learned from the footage. Reading/Watching/Voting: The Fat Bear Week website is where you can read all about this year’s bears, watch them fishing and doing their thing, and of course vote for which one you think is the fattest. Thu, 26 Sep 2024 - 3716 - Your Shortcut to... Israel's spy agency Mossad
It’s pretty rare to see the work of a foreign spy agency leading international headlines, but that’s exactly what happened last week when thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah blew up in 2 waves of timed explosions. Experts reckon it’s the work of Israel’s spy agency, Mossad, which has quite a history of covert operations around the world. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll look at what Mossad is, its notorious past, and why it’s changed the way it operates. Squiz recommends: Listening: An episode of the ABC’s If You’re Listening podcast with Matt Bevan, called The Extraordinary Assassination of Ismail Haniyeh… If You’re Listening isn’t your average news pod. It’s Matt’s witty, short-form take on current affairs, and as the title suggests, this ep looks at the probable involvement of Israel in the death of Ismail Haniyeh, and how Mossad has changed the way it operates over the past 15 years. Watching: The movie Munich starring Eric Bana and Daniel Craig deals with the assassination plot to track down the killers of the 11 Israeli athletes murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympics, told from the perspective of a Mossad agent. Find it on Netflix or Stan. Want the email version? Sign up for the Shortcuts newsletter here.

Thu, 19 Sep 2024 - 3708 - Your Shortcut to... The Reserve Bank of Australia
There’s been a bit of argy-bargy lately between the federal government and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) over why our economy is so sluggish. The government blames the RBA’s interest rate hikes, but the bank insists they’re necessary to keep our economy healthy. So in this Squiz Shortcut we’ll look at the role of the Reserve Bank, how it affects our lives, and why its relationship with the government has hit a rocky patch. Squiz recommends: Listening: This podcast episode by ABC’s The Money: Is the Reserve Bank doing a good enough job? looks at both the government’s and the RBA’s perspectives and gives a good overview of the issues. Watching: The movie The Big Short starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt is about 4 outsiders who see an opportunity in the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2009 and go for it. It’s an entertaining way to learn a bit about financial systems with lots of Hollywood A-listers for company. Want the email version? Sign up for the Shortcuts newsletter here.

When Prince Harry turns 40yo on Sunday, he’ll inherit a large sum of money, making him the latest in a long line of super-rich Royals with multiple income streams. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we'll look at the wealth of the British Royal Family, where they get their money from, and how they spend it. Squiz recommends: Reading: This article from The Conversation called Did the King Just Get a Pay Rise? It’s a good explainer about how the Crown Estate and the Sovereign Grant work, and how the funding agreements have been worked out between the Royals and the British government. Thu, 05 Sep 2024 - 3695 - Your Shortcut to... PFAS - the 'forever chemicals'
There’s been a fair bit of concern recently after certain types of chemicals were found in a dam that feeds into the water supply of the NSW Blue Mountains. That’s because, in large enough doses, they can be harmful to humans and even cause cancer. So in this Squiz Shortcut, we’ll explain what forever chemicals are, where they’ve been found, and what health and environmental impacts they can have. Squiz recommends: Listening: This podcast episode from ABC Radio National called: What would it take to ensure Australian drinking water is safe from 'forever chemicals'? It’s a great explainer about the issue of PFAS in our water supply, and it also has responses from WaterNSW and the Australian Government. Watching: This episode of Last Week Tonight with comedian John Oliver delves - somewhat irreverently - into PFAS and the DuPont case, but follows up with the very serious outcomes for America. And if that piques your interest, you could follow up by watching Mark Ruffalo on the case in Dark Waters. Want the email version? Sign up for the Shortcuts newsletter here.

Thu, 22 Aug 2024 - 3681 - Your Shortcut to... The astronauts stranded in space
In the first week of June, 2 NASA astronauts were launched into space on Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft. It was a test flight to the International Space Station (ISS) that was meant to last 8 days but they’ve been stuck there now for more than 2 months with no definite date of return. So in this Shortcut, we’ll look at what went wrong, what’s being done to get them home, and how this mission could impact Boeing and the future of commercial space travel. Squiz recommends: Reading: The NASA Space Station blog - it’s a fascinating look into the everyday life of the astronauts on the ISS and the research they’re doing, which covers everything from stem cell studies to trying to grow plants in space. Reading: The BBC article What happens when astronauts get stuck in space gives a good overview of the Starliner’s mission and Boeing’s predicament with getting Wilmore and Williams home.
