In August of 1990, five young students were found gruesomely murdered in Gainesville, Florida, beginning an intense search for monster known as “The Gainesville Ripper.” Attorney Rod Smith served as the prosecutor in the trial of Danny Rolling. He looks back at how he was able to secure the death penalty against Rolling and shares how one of Rolling's fellow inmates played a pivotal role in building the case against him. For nine days, Susan Smith spoke to reporters, pleading for the safe return of her two sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander. On October 25th, 1994, she alleged that an African American man carjacked her at gunpoint and kidnapped her children. However, on November 3rd, 1994, Susan's car was retrieved from a lake, along with the bodies of her young sons. That day, Susan revealed her story was a lie, and that she was the killer for whom the community searched. State Representative Tommy Pope was the 16th Circuit Solicitor in South Carolina and prosecuted the Susan Smith case. He discusses his work on the high-profile trial and reflects on her conviction 30 years later. Tommy Pope currently serves as the Speaker Pro Tempore in the South Carolina House of Representatives and serves as a South Carolina House Member from the 47th District. In 2008, he was awarded South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. For weeks, 36-year-old Joan Rogers and her two teenage daughters, Michelle and Christe, had eagerly awaited summer break so that they could embark on their first vacation outside their home state of Ohio. The trio set out to enjoy the sandy beaches of Florida, but the trip soon took a deadly turn. On June 4th, 1989, their bodies were found hogtied and undressed, floating in Tampa Bay. Retired FBI Special Agent Jana Monroe worked on the case from beginning to end. She details the barriers she broke which ultimately led to her work on the investigation, and later shares how she was able to catch the man responsible for the heinous killings: Oba Chandler. Jana had an illustrious career within the FBI.
