- 161 - Paul Conroy- Footballer of the year
For this year- he's the best. Paul Conroy is thriving in midfield and believes Galway are good enought to win Sam Maguire. This podcast is packed with insights into the mindset of one of the top performers in modern day Gaelic football. Breaking his leg against Sean O'Shea, his annoyance when people pick on teachers and what's next in 2025. One of the genuine great guys in Gaelic Games.
*This podcast was recorded before Paul Conroy picked up 2024 Player of the Year
Tue, 19 Nov 2024 - 160 - Jody Gormley- perhaps our strongest ever podcast
Former Tyrone gaelic footballer, Successful manager, but managing death as a young man. This is the remarkable story of Jody Gormley. As strange as it may sound, a hugely uplifiting podcast. Perhaps the most powerful we've ever recorded (we don't say that lightly). He revealed to his Trillick players he has terminal cancer after losing the county final on Friday night. Jody has three children and an amazing wife Deirdre. The night before recording this podcast, Jody had a living Wake in Belfast with teammates, friends and former sporting enemies. He calls it "A gathering." Jody Gormley is a lesson in life. A beautiful man
Fri, 01 Nov 2024 - 159 - Shane O'Donnell. Winning the All-Ireland with Clare, image rights, what's next
Shane O'Donnell is expected to be named Hurler of the Year 2024. His performances this year, one of the main reasons why Liam MacCarthy resides in Clare over the winter. Shane considered giving up the game after a serious concussion in 2021. He didn't, Clare thrived and there's more to come. This podcast is hugely insightful into O'Donnell, his thinking, the thorny issues of image rights and he explains very clearly who the greatest player in Clare history is.
It's another facinating conversation with one of the great hurlers, and decent people of our times.
Shane O'Donnell on the GAA Social with Thomas Niblock and Oisin McConville
Tue, 29 Oct 2024 - 158 - Niall Grimley. Winning an All-Ireland. As powerful as it gets
Sometimes podcasts just stop us in our tracks. This is one of them. Niall Grimley from Madden county Armagh. He didn't play a minute in Ulster championship and League- yet is now in the running for an All-star. It's a remarkable sporting journey that reached its climax on Sunday winning his first All-Ireland- and he's been crucial. Niall also broke his neck and tore his MCL. Unfortunately, there’s more. In November last year, Niall lost his brother Patrick and his wife Ceira in a road traffic accident enroute home from Patrick's 40th birthday party. Children left without mummy and daddy. Kiera McElvanna also lost her life in that accident, the wife of former Armagh All-Ireland winner Kevin McElvanna who made such an impact of us all when he appeared on this podcast earlier this year. It's an immeasurable loss to a community, even one as strong as Madden. Sunday was a mixed day, but a very special one. Niall Grimley is a very special person as we reflect on the summer that was. The championship that ten teams could have won, but it was Armagh who took Sam Maguire home.
Tue, 30 Jul 2024 - 157 - How Armagh won the All-IrelandSun, 28 Jul 2024
- 156 - Ronan Clarke. Winning an All-Ireland at 18
Ronan Clarke- a former teammate of Oisin and a previous housemate with Thomas at University. Three great friends, sitting down for a chat on the week of the All-Ireland final. Memories flooding back. Ronan was 18 when he got the better of Kerry great Seamus Moynihan and collected an All-Ireland. He also won 'Young Player of he year' at the GAA All-stars. Ronan Clarke was some footballer- an even better person
Injury, then a collision that had serious consequences. It's a packed life, family, coaching and now back at college because he wants to help people.
Ronan Clarke, in a very very very rare interview. Very!
Tue, 23 Jul 2024 - 155 - The All-Ireland Hurling final. What a daySun, 21 Jul 2024
- 154 - Davy Fitzgerald. Everything on record. A brilliant Podcast
We look ahead to the All-Ireland hurling final this weekend with an icon of the sport. Davy Fitzgerald will be in Croke Park as a supporter, in an All-Ireland final this weekend- for the first time! There is so much great stuff in this podcast and Davy answers the questions around his future- it is interesting! He's on of the greats, enjoying life, valuing health and driven to be the best. Liked or not.
Davy Fitzgerald on the GAA Social Podcast with Thomas & Oisin
Tue, 16 Jul 2024 - 153 - Galway & Armagh into final. What a weekend.Sun, 14 Jul 2024
- 152 - Aidan O'Shea. 90 minutes Special. Uncut. Mayo
Where do you actually begin with Aidan O'Shea?
He’s one of the biggest names in Gaelic games- but many, don’t seem to like him?
He’s one of the greatest footballers in Mayo history, maybe even this generation, but he’s never won an All-Ireland.
Mayo have failed in their quest for Sam Maguire for more than half a century, but the embodiment of that failure, for some, is Aidan O’Shea. Why?
In a revealing episode of the GAA Social, Thomas & Oisin dive into who is Aidan O’Shea.
8 Connacht senior championships, Minor and U21. Two Allianz League titles and he’s played for Ireland in 2013 and 2015. He’s also three All-stars. That’s more than Willie Joe Padden, Dermot Flanagan, Kenneth Mortimer, Alan Dillon, James Nallen, James Horan, David Clarke & Andy Moran. But is he valued as highly?
There was the controversy in 2015/16 which led to a change of Mayo management with Noel Connelly & Pat Holmes in charge for one season. It remains a sore point.
He’s lived most of his life, to some degree in the public eye. An Irish Times column when at School studying the leaving Cert, cost him a place at DCU. There’s been harsh learnings along the way
What comes out in the podcast is the progressive modern voice Aidan O’Shea presents. He is hugely interesting, comfortable in his skin and doesn’t really care if he’s liked.
There’s been low points. Doubts, struggles and hand written letters to his parents home. His house too. Those closest have learned to intercept these ‘notes’ before they land. Dealing with social media and saying no, more than many would realise.
His devotion to Mayo is clear. What is the Mayo problem and do we as a Gaelic Games public come down too heavy on an amateur sportsman, doing his best for his county. He's getting married next month, he's a daughter and life is good but will be be back in red and green- definitively?
We examine success and scrutinise failures and above all, get to know one of the great footballing talents of our time. We also remember 'Three phone' John O'Mahoney. A man, exceptional at being decent. He also was the man who brought Aidan O'Shea into the senior squad- when he as still at school. O'Shea provides a fine tribute.
It’s a 90 minute special with Aidan O’Shea. We think you’ll enjoy
Tue, 09 Jul 2024 - 151 - Mickey Harte steps down as Derry manager
Less than a year into the role, Mickey Harte has stepped down as Derry manager. It was a controversial appointment in September 2023 and after a successful league- Derry in championship fell apart.
Thomas & Oisin are joined by Aidan O’Shea on The GAA Social Podcast- Wednesday edition, but the boys took some time to discuss the news of Mickey Harte’s departure and who will replace him
Mon, 08 Jul 2024 - 150 - Limerick out, Kilkenny too. Clare v Cork final- glorious!Sun, 07 Jul 2024
- 149 - Niall Devlin. Tyrone star, losing my brother in March
Niall Devlin is one of the top performers for Tyrone this season. He's only 22. He captained his county to an All-Ireland U20 title two years ago and has made the successful step up into senior level. It's his third season with the seniors. We reflect on Tyrone and look forward to the Tyrone Elclassico with the first round championship meeting of Clonoe and Coalisland. Niall won't be playing. He's learned his lesson. Progression, studying, family and football- life was great for Niall.
It changed. On March 5th, leaving training at Garvaghy, the Tyrone team were told the Omagh road was closed because of an accident, "Another poor family."
It was his family, his brother Caolan. The 30-year-old died instantly in a collision with a lorry and another family feeling the loss of tragedy on the A5. That's more than 50 dead since 2006 on the same road. That number will realistically, increase.
Niall is learning to live with loss, his mum and dad too. Football has helped and remarkably he landed back at training within a week "I'm here to play"
And play he did, on a wet night against Monaghan, a relegation eliminator of sorts. An emotional night and Niall stood for a minutes silence, for his brother. It's a story of family, Coalisland and Tyrone. It's a deeply personal account, told by a young man who radiates leadership, decency and a role model.
This is Niall Devlin. A remarkable podcast and one of the best people, you could ever wish to meet.
Tue, 02 Jul 2024 - 148 - The final four for Sam MaguireSun, 30 Jun 2024
- 147 - Alan O'Mara. New York manager. Living life
A former Cavan goalkeeper, for Alan it was trying to fit in when he moved from Dublin as a child "Tractors or football." It turns out, he was pretty good at football and after playing Cavan minors and U21's, Alan found himself in Croke Park playing Kerry for a place in the All-Ireland semi-final. Life was good. It wasn't always that way. Struggling with depression, suicide felt like an option. Alan paved his way back from the brink. That road ultimately led him to the US. Working as a podcaster, a performance coach and now managing New York. He's also on his honeymoon with the brilliant Mary-Kate. Philadelphia Eagles are top of the list, the Phillys too.
Life is good. Strength, resolve and being better
It's Alan O'Mara on the GAA Social Podcast
Tue, 25 Jun 2024 - 146 - Mayo & Tyrone gone. Last 8 revealedSun, 23 Jun 2024
- 145 - Peter McGinnity. Fermanagh & still coaching at top
This was a lovely hour with former BBC Co-commentator Peter McGinnity. Winning Championship titles with his native Roslea and St John's Belfast, a player/ manager for Fermanagh and still coaching with Tyrone champions Trillick. Jody Gormley's team are aiming to become the first team since Carrickmore in 2006, to retain the senior championship.
There's plenty of laughs, but 70 has rattled Peter, just a little. A fine man, a brilliant voice and another lovely podcast on the GAA Social
Tue, 18 Jun 2024 - 144 - Knockout football is hereSun, 16 Jun 2024
- 143 - Pete McGrath. His life. Down legend
Pete McGrath is a Gaelic football legend. He won Sam Maguire in 1991 & 1994 with his native Down. A lifetime coaching at the great Down/ Armagh nursery St Colman's College, he's coached some of the best players to wear the red and black- from the early days to their biggest. He's had an incredible life. Totally devoted to football, no family, just devotion to faith and Down. He wasn't in the top ten picks for the Down job in the late 80's- but he got the job, on his terms. Success followed.
It wasn't all comfortable. A falling out with players, including All-stars Greg Blaney and James McCartan threatened to derail the Down campaign of 1994.
One of the more interesting elements of the podcast is how McGrath was forced to change when he was Fermanagh manager. Showing humility after being called out. It shows enormous strength. At 71, Pete McGrath is the senior football manager of Aghagallon and the minor manager of his native club Rostrevor. Modern players are different people now, are they less resilient?
In 1994 the UVF burst into a local bar in Loughinisland when the Republic of Ireland were playing in the World Cup. The killed six civilians, wounding five more. Down had an Ulster championship semi-final game the next day. Normality then, seems unthinkable now. It's a remarkable insight into one of the darkest times in our history.
There's the Meath/Down saga from 1991, crossing the border with Sam Maguire, 71 going on 41 and runs in the Mournes to clear the head!
Nothing off-limits. It's the iconic Mourneman Pete McGrath. Down legend. Forever young
Tue, 11 Jun 2024 - 142 - Limerick, Tailteann 1/4's & final group games
We know the quarter-finalists of the Tailteann Cup and we now know Limerick will win five All-Ireland titles in a row. Don’t we? They picked up a 6th consecutive Munster championship over the weekend, surely now the greatest of all time? Kilkenny may have something to say about that after comfortably picking up another Leinster title, beating Dublin.
Th All-Ireland minor semi-finals have now been decided. Derry will play Kerry, while Aidan O’Rourke’s Armagh will play Mayo. Are we underselling the minor product?
We also look ahead to the final football championship group matches. With so much on the line, it feels that championship summer may finally have arrived. We’ll see.
We also reflect on the phenomenal reaction to the Kevin McElvanna Podcast.
It’s the GAA Social, on a Monday with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville
Sun, 09 Jun 2024 - 141 - 2002 All-Ireland winner Kevin McElvanna- losing my wife
It was a tragedy that rocked the Co Armagh village of Madden. Still does. Three of their own, killed in a road accident returning in a taxi bus after a 40th birthday in Dundalk. 2002 All-Ireland winner Kevin McElvanna lost his wife Ciara and their four children are now without mum. A life changing moment. Kevin is a surgeon and broke his neck in the accident. He's continuing to recover.
For the first time, Kevin explains what happened, how he's coped and what the future holds. It's a remarkable podcast- one of our most powerful. A deeply personal story told with strength and dignity. Perhaps strangely, It's also uplifting, inspiring and laced with moments of laughter.
The strength and power of Kevin McElvanna shines through. Madden as a community lost their of their best, but the community survives and thrives. Patrick Grimley, who also died on that November night, would have been proud watching his younger brother Niall tear Derry apart at Celtic Park on Sunday. GAA people. Decent people.
This is the story of Kevin McElvanna, on the GAA Social with Thomas & Oisin. A must listen.
Tue, 04 Jun 2024 - 140 - Will Mickey Harte be with Derry next year? An explosive weekendSun, 02 Jun 2024
- 139 - East Belfast GAA- How it all started. Co Founder Dave McGreevy
This weeks is the fourth anniversary of East Belfast GAA. It all started with a tweet and now the club has more playing members than any other in Ulster. It's a remarkable story. The path, has been challenging. Pipe bombs, graffiti, oil poured on playing surface, threats and just this weekend past, another security alert.
The club has not just survived, but blossomed. With more than 1/4 of its players from a protestant background the club is challenging perceptions around the GAA. In a traditionally unionist area of Belfast, the establishment of the GAA club raised eyebrows. Dave thought it made sense in an area with the same population as county Kilkenny to have its own club. This podcast is very different.
Love, loss and the birth of Ulster's newest (and biggest) GAA club.
This is the story of East Belfast GAA, explained for the first-time in full, by co-founder Dave McGreevy

Tue, 28 May 2024 - 138 - A magical weekend in hurling & footballSun, 26 May 2024
- 137 - Ambrose Rogers- a Down icon. This is his story
This is the remarkable story of Ambrose Rogers. The quiet man of Down, but cut from GAA Royalty. Ambrose is 39. His father Ambrose snr, died when he was 39. That death left a 14 year-old child, the eldest of four, without a dad. A hole that cannot be filled. Life goes on and young Ambrose blossoms into a brilliant young man, a superb young footballer. He captains his county to an All-Ireland final in 2010- but he cannot take his place on the team. The cruciate. Ambrose shocked a nation when he lined out that day- but the call didn't come and Down lost by a point. It's just one of a number of insights into this Down legend.
The podcast explores coaching, this current Down team and Ambrose reveals he would love to manage his native county, some day, but not yet.
Recorded in front of a studio audience at the Saint Patrick centre in Downpatrick, this is Ambrose Rogers.
Tue, 21 May 2024 - 136 - Galway win, red cards, Kerry & Mayo are back. Tyrone U20 & Armagh LadiesSun, 19 May 2024
- 135 - Maurice Deegan. Being a referee and what's next. This is great
This is a magnificent podcast. Thomas & Oisin have wanted a referee for some time, and the GAA Social landed one of the best. Maurice Deegan uncut and answers all the questions around referees and reveals his new role at Croke Park. The Laois man has joined BBC coverage of Gaelic Games over the past 15 months and the feedback has been awesome.
This is really, really good. The GAA Social with referee Maurice Deegan, a man Oisin has never really liked. Enjoy
Tue, 14 May 2024 - 134 - Donegal win! Louth stun Dublin-but fall short
Louth smack a performance, nobody out side their camp predicted- but ultimately Dublin still win. An 18th title for Stephen Cluxton. We reflect on the most dramatic of days at Clones as Donegal come back, to win the Ulster championship. A truly remarkable occasion. What next for Armagh? Well, it's Tyrone!
Sun, 12 May 2024 - 133 - Steven McDonnell- A legend
Steven McDonnell is one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of his generation. A former player-of-the year, three-time All-star, All-Ireland winner and seven-time Ulster champion. Success was a familiar path, and it’s perhaps no surprise that he made David Clifford’s dream 7’s team. Some man.
In this podcast, Oisin teams up with his old buddy to talk the good ole days, the constant challenge of Donegal and what we can expect in the 2024 Ulster final. The former Ireland player also calls on the GAA to reinstate the International rules series and has a plan how it can flourish. Behind the talented footballer is also a man who cared for his mum as she died from Alzheimer’s. It’s a cruel disease “We lost our mum before she died.” The illness paused his managerial ambitions but not his love of the sport and why he thinks most forwards are failing. Steven tries a Kieran Donaghy accent, reveals his ‘extensive’ weights programme and provides a brilliant insight on the famous Conor Gormley block in the 2003 All-Ireland final against Tyrone. The podcast also reflects on last week’s Colin Bell Podcast, someone McDonnell knows well and the day the Armagh legend tricked Stephen Cluxton into a red card. Stevie from Killeavy- the footballing icon, the finest of men. Our guest this week, on the GAA Social Podcast.
Tue, 07 May 2024 - 132 - Kerry won't win Sam, Mayo might not qualify. Galway boom
It's a provincial title for Kerry and Galway on two very different occasions. Clare can take great encouragement from their final defeat in Munster- but the same can't be said about Mayo. Oisin believes they might not even make it out of their group. Galway found something from within and the scenes at the final whistle suggest this was something big for the Tribesmen.
Sun, 05 May 2024 - 131 - Colin Bell- a podcast almost beyond words
Colin Bell is one of those truly remarkable people you come across in life. Authentic, beautiful. Colin played with the great Sean & Kevin O'Neill for Newry Mitchel's. He also played for Down minors and U21's- he even played soccer for Newry Town. A teacher, married to the wonderful Eithne & a busy life with seven children under six years old. But life was good.
Then his son Kevin was killed in a hit & run incident in New York. Life would never be the same again. From that devastation, the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust was born. The charity has brought home more than 1800 people, who've died abroad. In the ten years of the charity, that's one every two days- and becoming busier.
During the recording of this Podcast, it became apparent just how critical the charity is. The recording was interrupted on three occasions with emergency phone calls. Life has changed, but the impact of KBRT is immense. How Colin reflects on his son, what he was like and the legacy he's left behind is beautiful.
There's never been an arrest for Kevin's death. What would Colin say if those responsible reached out?
Despite the sensitive nature of this podcast, it's an hour of fun, laughs and the reveal that Colin "Has a left foot that could cut cake"
There's a remarkable revelation at the end, but the shining light is Colin, his son Kevin and the stunning impact they have on so many lives.
This is the remarkable GAA Social with former Down footballer, Colin Bell.
If you've a story on Colin, please reach out and let us know
Tue, 30 Apr 2024 - 130 - The GAA Social- with Ryan McHugh
Ryan McHugh joins Thomas & Oisin on the GAA Social after Donegal qualify for the 2024 Ulster final. An insight into the Jim McGuinness world and a look ahead to the Ulster final against Armagh. But first, there's two very different semi-finals to reflect in Ulster and Leinster. Clare & Cork serve up a cracker and Antrim show they can do it- and do it well.
Lee Chin is an unbelievable hurler.
One last thing, and we know it's unlikely, but is it conceivable that Donegal could win an All-Ireland? The GAA Social on a Monday
Sun, 28 Apr 2024 - 129 - Liam Hinphey- a truly powerful podcast
This podcast is among the most powerful the GAA Social has ever recorded. We accept that's a big statement. you can judge for yourself. Liam Hinphey played for Ulster and Derry in Hurling. He played football for his county and was the key player when Derry beat All-Ireland champions Tyrone in Omagh in 2006. He marked Sean Cavanagh that day, got the better of him too. So the focus of this podcast, was supposed to be the upcoming Ulster semi-final between Derry and Tyrone. Jim McGuinness had other ideas.
We ploughed on regardless and what a story. Liam has a young son, also called Liam. He has Dravet Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy. It can be fatal. It's a constant challenge for Liam and his wife Clare. Liam also lost his father this year- an icon of Derry, Dungiven and Kilkenny hurling. He's also called Liam, apparently William III. A fine man. We explore grief, being better and challenging yourself. Don't be fooled, there are outrageous moments of laughter in this podcast, smiles, digs with nothing off limits.
It's an inspiring story of life, survival and being the best version of yourself. Being better. This is Liam Hinphey, approaching 40 and one of the best people you could meet. A great daddy
Tue, 23 Apr 2024 - 128 - Cathal McShane on an epic weekend of GAASun, 21 Apr 2024
- 127 - Seamus Kennedy- Tipperary hurling star.
Seamus Kennedy was captain of Tipperary hurlers, 6 days later he was taking on the All-Ireland champions Limerick when disaster struck. Cruciate gone, season over. In his first interview since injury last month, the talented dual player brings us into the devastation of injury. There is perspective. Dillon Quirke died less than two yeas ago, Tipperary are still recovering, knowing they'll never truly get there.
There is hunger within Tipperary to win Liam MacCarthy. To be better. 2023 was disappointing, failing to reach the All-Ireland semi-finals. Is there more in Tipp? This podcast dives into the Munster hurling championship. It's cut-throat, but it's beautiful.
Seamus comes from success. It's in the blood. One of the really interesting takes on this podcast is the discussion around life balance. The demands are almost impossible, but players want to drive standards. Are we asking too much? Injuries are certainly on the increase. Despite playing football for Clonmel Commericals, who are seeking three football championships in a row, Seamus can obtain a balanced life. He's still, the model pro.
Life, Arsenal, winning All-Irelands, dual-players and being in love with Tipperary.
One last thing, Why does everyone hate Tipp? Is it actually a thing? We ask Seamus
Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 126 - Armagh defender Paddy Burns joins Michael Murphy & Thomas Niblock
Paddy Burns was brilliant against Fermanagh, in the running for man-of-the-match. He speaks brilliantly on this Podcast- it's utterly refreshing! Michael Murphy develops the players relationships with media and how that's changed. We reflect on the weekend action and start looking ahead to next weekend. So many big games, but there is one that stands out a little. Derry V Donegal. Mickey V Jim. Michael Murphy has his say and the podcast also reflects on an incredible run for Wicklow. Lost by one point to Kildare but will go into the Tailteann cup with confidence.
It's the GAA Social on a Monday, Murph replaces McConville.
Sun, 14 Apr 2024 - 125 - Charlie Smyth- from GAA to the New Orleans Saints
He’s the footballer everyone is talking about. It feels like Charlie Smyth has been everywhere over the past few weeks, but we haven’t heard a lot from him? In his first long form interview since signing for the New Orleans Saints, the former Down and Mayobridge GAA player, brings the GAA Social into his new world.
An avid listener to the GAA Social podcast, Charlie explores his new world with Thomas and Oisin. A new sport, new life and a drive that’s within to make in in the NFL. It’s a remarkable journey, so far.
A 3 year contract with one of the biggest clubs in American sport, Charlie moves to New Orleans this weekend. We discuss money, how much he will and can make, goals, challenging for the number one kicking position (currently held by Blake Grupe) and meeting some of the biggest names in American Sport ‘Bout ye Cam Jordan’ “Money doesn’t drive me”
We discuss the pressure of the NFL combine, delivering and signing a contract- all after imaging himself as Kerry footballer Bryan Sheehan. Charlies story is unconventional. Struggling to make a school team, regrouping to star for Down in U20 Ulster championship glory. Then, the devastation. No more Down, and he wasn’t playing with his club Mayobridge. It was a real low, but that disappointment was harnessed in a positive way. Focus, drive and total commitment. Courage was clear and Charlie burst into life.
We mentioned it's Charlie's first long form interview- but not his first interview. The Late Late show on RTE was the destination on Friday, what was that like?
Some people laughed when a young recently qualified teacher wanted to make a career in the NFL. They’re not laughing now It’s Charlie Smyth on the GAA Social, with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville
Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 124 - The GAA Social with Michael Murphy & 1-9 hero Paddy LynchSun, 07 Apr 2024
- 123 - Margaret McConville. The Troubles, Oisin & losing a son
When we stopped recording, videographer Tristan turned to Thomas and said 'I don't think there's many we've done as powerful as that?" We think he’s right.
We've been trying to record this podcast for two years, today we finally can bring it to our listeners. It’s different and challenges a few boundaries. For a son to ask questions to his mother, on a podcast, around sensitive areas, is strange, but it’s powerful.
We hope you can appreciate and enjoy one of the kindest, most generous and authentic people anyone could meet. Margaret McConville is one of those unique, remarkable people you rarely come across in life. Raring a family in what felt like a war zone- but losing a young son in the tranquillity of Donegal. It's taken a toll, but the attitude of Margaret is inspiring. Football and family is key. There's grand-children and great grand-children now. All of them adore Margaret.
Oisin had a well-publicised gambling problem, but there was another side Margaret had to face. At one stage in this podcast, we almost feel like we're eve-dropping on an intimate private conversation between mother and son. They’ve allowed us in.
Oisin also explores his different childhood and why he’s so passionate in helping others. It would be easier to walk away.
It's Oisin's mummy- on the GAA Social. The beautiful Margaret McConville, 88 years young!
Tue, 02 Apr 2024 - 122 - Derry win league, Armagh don't- incredible day at CrokeMon, 01 Apr 2024
- 121 - Garvan Jones- Fermanagh full-forward on the GAA Social
Garvan Jones scored 1-8 (1-7 from play) against Cavan over the weekend. It was a magnificent win for Fermanagh, but it couldn’t keep them in division two. The Allianz leagues can be cruel, but with Championship just over two weeks away, Garvan brings the podcast into the mind of a current inter-county footballer. With two older brothers playing Fermanagh, who’ve this year decided to step back- the time is right for Garvan to help lead. He’s had a brilliant 2024 personally, leading the attack, scoring heavily and delivering on the promise he’s shown throughout his club career with Derrygonnelly and with Fermanagh. What’s made him better now? Why now? Hopes and desires for 2024 and playing Armagh in the opening round of the Ulster championship. Are Fermanagh good enough?
We also talk broadcasting, coverage of games, what do players want to see? University football pints to the serious business of senior inter-county football. Being in the mindset.
It’s Garvan Jones on the GAA Social with Thomas & Oisin
Tue, 26 Mar 2024 - 120 - The GAA Social. League winners, losers, championshipSun, 24 Mar 2024
- 119 - Diarmuid O'Sullivan-Strikes, fights, is he capable of managing Cork? A footballer, beat up by a mummy-but nailed Francie Bellew
In one of the most enjoyable podcasts since the GAA Social started it's meandering journey- Diarmuid O'Sullivan stands out. Nothing is off limits. Passed over as Cork manager- why? Rows with Kilkenny and Limerick and embracing his iconic status.
Then, there's the strikes. In the noughties Cork called a strike three times. It was hugely controversial and still causes debate. The fall-outs continue and there's a feeling more than 20 years on, Cork were not supported as they should. Diarmuid’s father Jerry was on the Cork County Board at the time, a former Chairman- but his son was on the opposing side. Diarmuid was still living at home at the time. Conversation over the dinner table. Tricky!
Diarmuid explains his first time crossing the border, the experience remains vivid in his mind. Should Casement stadium be built? Cork have their own issues around 'Oisin McConville Supervalue Park' as it's now known.
O'Sullivan is helping Ronan Sheehan as part of the Down hurling management. It's a role he enjoys. Could he manage one of the top Munster teams? Could he manage Cork some day?
It's the life and times of one of Hurling’s greatest icons- Diarmuid O'Sullivan on the GAA Social Podcast
Tue, 19 Mar 2024 - 118 - Monaghan relegated, Tyrone safe & the exceptional Niall Devlin
Thomas & Oisin reflect on a bumper weekend of Gaelic Games. Wicklow earn their first win, and now play Antrim in a massive game for survival for both counties. Because of the Down/ Westmeath draw- how big is the Down Clare game this weekend? A promotion play-off for a place in division two. Laois still look good for promotion from Division four- despite defeat from Leitrim. Tommy Conroy catches the eye- despite losing to Derry. A Monaghan -Tyrone classic, Galway still in trouble with Roscommon and David Clifford misses a penalty. We kid you not!
The GAA Social on a Monday - and we have a new winner of Player of the week!!!! (He throughly deserved it)
Sun, 17 Mar 2024 - 117 - Aimee Mackin. Being the best, trying to win an All-Ireland, life in Australia, famous family, amalgamation & driving Armagh
Aimee is perhaps the greatest Gaelic footballer of her generation. There are a couple in that top bracket, but the Armagh forward has already picked up Player of the year and despite her young age, has represented the Armagh senior team for nine years. Her debut came in 2015
In this wide ranging podcast, we examine the amalgamation piece around the GAA/ LGFA and Camogie Association, her one piece of advice to those decision makers and her hopes that the hierarchy of all three organisations can follow the example of our clubs.
Aimee comes from arguably the most talented Gaelic football family in Ireland at present. Her sister Blaithin plays for Armagh and her brothers Ciaran and Connaire line-out for the Armagh mens team. Aimee and Balithin also play Australian Rules with Melbourne Fooball Club, representing the Demons in the AFLW. Aimee has also played international soccer at all levels.
Despite the obvious talents, Aimee struggled to acknowledge her greatness. Humble. The Camlough athlete examines the notion of placing a life on hold for sport, winning an All-Ireland with Armagh, media awareness and caution. Mackin also remembers the days when Armagh didn’t have a pitch to train on. It’s not like that now.
Cruciate recovery into one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of her generation. It’s the brilliant Aimee Mackin on the GAA Social Podcast
Tue, 12 Mar 2024 - 116 - The Curse of County Mayo- a Documentary from the BBC World Service on the GAA Social. Something a bit different this week
Is County Mayo’s Gaelic football team cursed? You might have heard of the “Curse of Bambino” for the Boston Red Sox in US baseball. This is the story of Ireland’s equivalent. Irish-American sports reporter Dave McKenna investigates this curious case to find out if a decades old hex is behind their recent failures. Did the team really disrespect a funeral in 1951? And did that cause the mysterious bad luck that’s plagued the team ever since? Episode 1 of 3.

Sun, 10 Mar 2024 - 115 - Jackie Tyrell- The real Brian Cody & the Shefflin handshake, crippled with doubt, obsessed, texts, punditry, mindset
This Podcast isn’t quite what you’d expect? Jackie Tyrell has won nine All-Ireland titles with Kilkenny & everything with his club. He’s one of Gaelic Games highest rated and respected TV analysts. He’s a model, assured and confident- it appears. Behind it all, was a hurler crippled with doubt.
This Podcast explores the journey Jackie Tyrell has travelled. A bumpy one. The James Stephen’s club man also lifts the lid on Brian Cody, what he was like, what made him different. Jackie also explains his thoughts around Henry Shefflin, his decision to take Galway and the famous handshake/ non-handshake between the star manager and perhaps his greatest player? No regrets.
Jackie also explains his obsessive nature. Press-ups/ sit-ups before bed, every single night, is just one tiny piece. There’s a brilliant insight into Tommy Walsh, the All-stars dinner when Tipperary cleaned up, Vodka & Redbull and the four digits that followed in a text message. There’s punditry, Donal Og "Going off one"- what was that like? And, there’s Cork. Ben O’Connor too.
There’s also Lar Corbett. Fabulous stuff.
Tue, 05 Mar 2024 - 114 - Brian Fenton, Kerry Tyrone rivalry bursts into life, Bad day for Oisin, Cavan still there, Cork win, bigger for Galway. Mayo?Sun, 03 Mar 2024
- 113 - 20th Anniversary Cormac McAnallen - GAA Social Special. Donal McAnallen & All-Star Kevin McCloy owing his life to Cormac.
An extra-length Podcast, for a very good reason.
It's 20 years since Cormac McAnallen died. At 24, the Tyrone captain already won a senior All-Ireland in 2003 and was next in line to life Sam Maguire as leader. It didn't happen. In the early hours of March 2nd, Donal McAnallen heard a noise in Cormac's room and found his brother. Donal explains what unfolded, Cormac's death and the trauma that seemed to hit everyone in a Gaelic Football nation.
The Cormac Trust was setup in Cormac’s memory and it saved countless lives. It's a beautiful legacy and joining Donal, Thomas & Oisin is former Derry captain Kevin McCloy. In August 2014, Kevin collapsed in a club championship match. His life has never been the same, but it's a life "Owed" to Cormac. In a remarkable podcast, Kevin explains his own journey through cardiac arrest. It's an extraordinarily personal account of life, death and survival beyond the brink.
Perhaps surprising, or maybe not, there are so many brilliant, funny moments in a special extra-length podcast, that turns several corners- some unexpected.
The GAA Social are indebted to Donal and Kevin for their honesty. This was a difficult podcast to take part in, but both men were simply incredible. Genuine, humble, authentic and brilliant ambassadors for the short, but beautiful life of Cormac McAnallen.
Tue, 27 Feb 2024 - 112 - Unbelievable forwards, Kerry collapse, Cork can survive, Westmeath & Down in control, 100% Derry. Where are the Dubs & Galway?Sun, 25 Feb 2024
- 111 - Shauna Ennis- Meath Double All-Ireland winning captain. This is why the GAA/ LGFA & Camogie Association need to amalgamate.
Shauna Ennis is a double All-Ireland winning captain. The Meath defender is also a camog, playing for the successful Na Fianna club in Meath. in 2023, the club reached All-Ireland semi-finals in Camogie and football. Despite several efforts, nine dual players had to play both games within 21 hours. One game in Louth, another 300km away. Then there's the boys, treated better than the girls.
Mary McAleese has set the target for 2027, listening to this podcast it can't come soon enough. But, it's a bumpy road ahead.
Tue, 20 Feb 2024 - 110 - The GAA Social on a Monday- Split Derry in half, Cliffords magic, Donegal improving, Wicklow & mini league, Cork & Kildare direSun, 18 Feb 2024
- 109 - Frank McGuigan- brutually honest. Alcohol, marriage, a car crash that cost his career, almost killed. This is his story
Frank McGuigan was one of Gaelic Games greatest footballers. An All-star award in 1984 after his historic 11-points from play during the Ulster final of the same year. An icon to this day. Football is great and life is good.
However a car accident ended his playing career and could have cost him his life. Frank was drunk behind the wheel and the accident sparked a period of depression and excessive drinking.
In this extraordinary podcast, McGuigan explains the toll alcohol took on his marriage, his family and his football. It’s brutally honest. It engages Thomas and Oisin into a conversation around alcohol that’s eyebrow raising.
Is Frank an alcoholic? He’s not sure. Fake stories around his drinking causes hurt, even today it annoys him. There's learnings in this podcast.
This all comes after a 15 minutes McGuigan syle analysis of new rules and the modern game. Frank doesn’t miss.
Tears in 2003 watching his son win Sam Maguire, annoyance over All-stars won and missed (Frank sold his All-star on e-bay)
Then there’s that famous last photograph with former Tyrone manager Art McCrory, days before he died. A simple snap that’s now priceless
Referees, Peter Canavan and the distress over the thought of Mickey Harte leading Derry to an All-Ireland.
Frank and his son Tommy have confirmed they’re moving to the States of Conor Glass walks up the Hogan steps.
There are loads of laughs, fun and stomach creasing moments-especially when a dodgy message was forwarded instead of deleted. Big mistake.
Frank McGuigan, one of the amazing people of our time.
The GAA Social. Powerful listening

Sun, 11 Feb 2024 - 107 - Adrian McGuckin, former Derry manager, teacher of thousands of footballers, success, learning to live without Vera. Beautiful
An Ulster GAA Icon, who shaped the lives and football careers of thousands of young men. Adrian McGuckin helped St Patrick’s Maghera win 12 MacRory Cup titles and four All-Ireland championships. This weekend it’s the 100th MacRory Cup final. He managed Derry, but regrets it now. He explains why?
This all comes after a playing career where the Ballinderry man won Ulster championships, played at Wembley and was the catalyst for success at both county and club level- with a humble heart.
In his mid-seventies, McGuckin reflects on life growing up on a farm, a less traditional choice of school and coaching at Jordanstown, now Ulster University. McGuckin also reflects on loss after his wife Vera died approaching 20 years ago now. It’s a familiar story for so many people in society, but explained perhaps by so few.
When Thomas and Oisin started their media journey- it was Adrian McGuckin who was at the centre of those days as a co-commentator and analyst for the BBC. Reminiscing, laughter and a former Derry manager who just “can’t get his head around” the new man in charge.
It’s wonderful stuff as the band comes back together, from one of the best people you could meet.
It’s Adrian McGuckin on the GAA Social. The voice is epic!
Tue, 06 Feb 2024 - 106 - GAA Social Extra on a Monday. Your comprehensive review of the weekends GAA talking pointsSun, 04 Feb 2024
- 105 - Conor Glass. Why I played for Derry v Kerry, winning All-Ireland with Glen, asking Malachy O'Rourke to be Derry manager
This is an absorbing listen.
Conor Glass is the most talked about GAA player of 2024. After winning an All-Ireland club title with Glen, beating Kerry with Derry six days after, and 24-hours-later, engaged into Tyrone royalty (She obviously said yes)
In a revealing GAA Social, Glass brings us into the heart of Mickey Harte taking the Derry job and exclusively reveals he asked Malachy O’Rourke to consider the vacant managers position. It’s a big moment for club and county. There are other revelations including the meaning behind the Tour de France shirt worn on Monday club (more meaningful than you’d suspect) how he, Ciaran McFaul and Ethan Doherty played for Derry just six days after winning an All-Ireland club and the fear of “The wheels coming off” after Rory Gallagher stepped back as Derry manager. Glass provides an insight into the Harte/Devlin regime and the drive to win Sam Maguire. There’s a poignant discussion on Claire Glass (Conor’s mum) who was diagnosed with cancer. Claire decided to hide the illness from Conor, because of football.
There’s also the insight into winning the All-Ireland club. The TV cameras picked him up at the final whistle, the tears flowed (the first of many that day)
The future, the drive, the busiest man in Ireland and the Derry captain with Thomas and Oisin on the GAA Social.
Wed, 31 Jan 2024 - 104 - GAA Social Monday- Canavan brilliance, Kerry on a different path, Monaghan magic, The Watty 3, Cavan are standout- BLACK CARD!
It's the opening weekend of the Allianz leagues and Oisin McConville casts his eye over the major talking points with Thomas Niblock- and there's plenty!
Monaghan stun Croke Park, Tyrone pick-up a win and Derry win in Tralee (With the Watty 3) Jim McGuinness is up and running- but there's cause for concern in Cork. Armagh, just OK. Thomas & Oisin go through division three and four and all the talking points on the Monday GAA Social. Available from 5am for your commute (Or just working from home)
Sun, 28 Jan 2024 - 103 - Conor McManus -The last dance, belief in Sam, Beggan to NFL, Harte & McGuinness, best point ever scored. Being Ruthless. Pain
Is it the last dance? Conor McManus explains his vision for 2024 and his future in Monaghan colours. Management is a discussion point, but this podcast brings listeners into the reality of playing top level Gaelic Games when the body is screaming stop. Operations await Conor in the very near future as a life beyond Blue and white is soon near. But not yet. After narrowly losing to Dublin in the 2023 All-Ireland semi-final, Monaghan were close. McManus explains his belief Monaghan can improve and the Sam Maguire is possible. It's a big ask. Conor explains the ruthless competition in challenging for an All-Ireland, winning championship games on penalties and commitment to the cause. Recorded in front of a 400 person studio audience, there’s plenty of laughs and craic in a fascinating insight into the mind of one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of our time. Is he the greatest Gaelic footballer, without an All-Ireland medal? It's the GAA Social Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville, with special guest Conor McManus
Tue, 23 Jan 2024 - 102 - The GAA Social returns- Neil Lennon on GAA, the Irish job, helping Dublin to Sam, Jim McGuinness, threats & a changing society
This is the remarkable life and story of Neil Lennon, wrapped in the hands of Gaelic Games. Born in Lurgan in County Armagh, Lennon rose to prominence in Gaelic games. Captaining his school and club in Lurgan, winning an All-Ireland with St Michael's before playing alongside Kieran McGeeney for Armagh, losing the Ulster final to Derry.
That Ulster final ignited a relationship with former Derry player Anthony Tohill, who ended up at Celtic Park on Old Firm day. Chris Sutton taking bets on who could "Slap" David Beckham and the remarkable chilling management call made by Martin O'Neill on Cup final day. It's a fascinating insight into the ruthless nature of management.
The podcast takes a look at a changing Irish society and for the first time Neil Lennon explains the details of how his International career ended, with the visit of two police officers. That low point fired a drive in Lennon, delivering managerial success and becoming Celtic manager at just 38.
Neil Lennon also answers questions on the vacant Republic of Ireland managers job. Is he the man for the job?
Scott Brown & Georgios Samaras watching Gaelic football, Martin O'Neill in awe of a GAA master and a brilliant insight into management. It’s the GAA Social with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville- back for a new series. Let 2024 begin
Sun, 21 Jan 2024 - 101 - The GAA Social- Team of the Year 2023. Season Reflections
It's been a long (short) season, with some brilliant (awful) games- but in the end, we have the best teams with the biggest prizes-a fine season. Limerick have Liam & Dublin won Sam. The Podcast will be taking an emotional break for a bit- Oisin & Thomas seem happy enough with this. Will we ever see them again? Would anyone actually be bothered? Before the break- The GAA Social 'Team of the Year' is picked. Actually, it's been more crafted. We also have our end of season review for the Podcast series. Brian Canavan, Seanie Johnston, Paddy McBride, Dion Dublin, Shane Walsh, Rory O'Carroll, our Live studio audience programme, Barry O'Hagan, Chrissy McKaigue, Big Conn, Niamh McLaughlin, Michael Murphy, Rian O'Neill, Austin Gleeson- these were the brilliant podcasts- THAT WERN'T MENTIONED!!!! From the team- we love you all and can't thank you enough. Oisin is away to France, Thomas is back to work, presenting BBC Newsline on Friday. No rest for the wicked!
PS- we might drop a few episodes throughout the autumn, maybe.

Seamus Moynihan is one of the Kerry all-time legends. Four All-Ireland medals, three All-stars, Nine Munster championships and a lifetime in a Kerry defence. Championship arrived as a 19-year-old in midfield and finished 14 years later. Oisin always said Moynihan was his toughest opponent.

A fascinating insight into one of the all-time greats.
Seamus Moynihan on the GAA Social
Wed, 26 Jul 2023 - 98 - A minutes silence for Jaap Stam, Thomas pinging them over the bar & the All-Ireland hurling final. Limerick magic.
Limerick join Kilkenny and Cork as the only sides to complete four-in-a-row. Will they become the first to make it five? In the immediate aftermath of a pulsating All-Ireland final, where Limerick burst into life after the break, we pick through the bones of another All-Ireland hurling championship.
Oisin has enjoyed a busy weekend. He played in an exhibition game against Manchester United and roasted Jaap Stam (There's photographic proof) he's now made for life. Thomas was supposed to play in that game- but decided to put the GAA first and lined out for Derry against Louth and it seemed to go pretty well!
Plenty of laughs, reflections on BBC Coverage and everyone in awe of the brilliance of Limerick. The team of our time.
Mon, 24 Jul 2023 - 97 - Brendan Rogers. Semi-final heartbreak, I'll Win All-Ireland, Rory Gallagher, unsure of next Derry manager, Clifford & Kerry
In a wide ranging podcast- recorded 36 hours after a heart-breaking All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Kerry- this is remarkable stuff from one of the best players in Gaelic football- in Gaelic games!
Brendan Rodgers should pick-up an All star award in midfield later this year after a dramatic change of position in 2023. His performance against Kerry was scintillating. We reflect on that defeat, his move to midfield and who he believes will win Sam Maguire (and Liam MacCarthy)
The podcast examines a season in red. The referee performance against Kerry, will Ciaran Meenagh remain as manager, the feeling within the camp when Rory Gallagher was replaced as coach 48 hours before the Ulster final- and its impact. Can you play both football and hurling and what's it like being a five-time world champion in Irish dancing. Brendan brings us into a world of pressure!
All-star awards- will Brendan pick one up later this year? Does he care? He's an interesting response. Planning a wedding when you've just one free week per-year and his decision not to drink alcohol is interesting. His Sunday night was a cup of tea, a traybake (because it was earned) and off to bed. Different.
What's vibrant about this podcast is the brilliant personality of Brendan Rogers. Devoted to Slaughtneil and Derry and an absolute belief he will climb the steps of the Hogan stand for both club and county. He’s also a healthy look on life, perspective and being level.
A brilliant episode of the Multi-Award winning GAA Social as Brendan Rogers sits down with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville
Wed, 19 Jul 2023 - 96 - Dublin- Kerry final. Semi-finals revisited. Referees and big calls.
We got there in the end, the All-Ireland final most people predicted. The journey over an explosive weekend in Croke Park was less obvious. Monaghan brought Dublin to the brink and Derry 'Could have/should have' beaten the All-Ireland champions Kerry. The BBC Commentary and studio team were in full flow and the Harte/McConville battle is back on! Referee decisons critical-Maurice Deegan was part of the commentary team- his insight into the decisions in realtime was superb. Is the job now just impossible and is help required?
It's the GAA Social Extra with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville
Mon, 17 Jul 2023 - 95 - Dion Dublin and the GAA. Manchester United, the inner Roy Keane, the real Alex Ferguson and Who will win Sam Maguire
This week, it's very different. Dion Dublin visited Croke Park for the first time. The day before, Thomas brought the former England football international to Glen where he met a former All-Ireland winner, the current Derry captain and the community aspect of a sport that's different.
Roy Keane, Eric Cantona and the real Alex Ferguson are explored and Dion gives us his take on Gaelic games, the contradictions within the sport and what sets it apart. It’s a unique insight.
Filled with laughs and depth it's a very different podcast from 'Homes under the Hammer' Presenter
Dion Dublin signed for United, had a brilliant start to his career before breaking his leg. Manchester United signed Eric Cantona and Dublin left. It was a sliding doors moment.
From Glen club to a Pub in Magherafelt before making our way to Dublin for the All-Ireland football quarter-finals.
Dion Dublin, in Dublin, watching Dublin and he’s on the GAA Social
Wed, 12 Jul 2023 - 94 - The Joy of All-Ireland Hurling semi-final weekend. Derry minors win All-Ireland & Football semi-finals preview. Oisin & Neil
After an magical weekend covering the hurling live on BBC TV- we pick through the bones of an incredible festival of joy at Croke Park. The Shane O'Donnell goal, Fogarty block and the mother of all saves "The best i've ever seen in my life" Kilkenny will now play Limerick in this years final. Thomas couldn’t make the jolly boys day out because he was presenting the TV coverage- but Oisin continued the fine tradition and was in a very happy place!
Then there's Derry minors. Another All-Ireland title and a lot of love for manager Damian McErlain. His record of success and development at underage level is impressive.
We look ahead to the All-Ireland hurling final and the football semi-finals. We've also a supporting cast member this week. The magnificent Neil McManus joins Thomas & Oisin. It's the GAA Social Extra on a Monday. We hope you enjoy
Mon, 10 Jul 2023 - 93 - John 'Bubbles' O'Dwyer- Tipperary, Not going back, Futuure of hurling, Migraines & it's up to Kilkenny to save hurling.
John O'Dwyer is 31- no longer a Tipperary hurler. The game has moved in a different direction and players like John feel they no longer fit the modern hurling pattern. It's an interesting take on our wonderful sport- and it's echoed by others. All-Ireland winner, All-star, and a player who still feels he is 'The best on the field' believes it could be up to Kilkenny to save hurling. What does that mean?
This weekend it's the All-Ireland hurling semi-finals- they're both live on BBC television, BBC iplayer & BBC Sport website. John tells Thomas & Oisin how they will play out and who, he believes, will make the All-Ireland final.
John also suffers from migraines. They're not just a headache and had a huge impact on his life when playing for Tipperary. Did it all start from a concussion? He brings us into that world. We also discuss the combine world that hurling is travelling on. Is it athlete more than skill?
Bubbles is also an accomplished Gaelic footballer- good enough to play county. Could we ever see him in blue and gold again?
It's the GAA Social with John O'Dwyer- top of the list, why is he called bubbles?

- 91 - Rory O'Carroll, 5 All-Ireland's with Dublin, breaking rules, living life differently, working in prison, Jim Gavin & Concussion
Rory O'Carroll is different. 5 x All-Ireland titles with Dublin- but decided to leave the most successful team of all time and go travelling. Life is too short. That journey brought him working in a women’s prison in New Zealand, learning new languages and a new perspective. Following your dreams. Rory has won two All-Ireland football titles with Kilmacud Crokes and was playing in the infamous Glen final earlier this year- should it have been replayed? Rory gives his answer.
In 2013, Rory was visibly concussed while playing Mayo. The final 10 minutes was a haze. What was that experience like and what are the learnings? All-stars, International Rules, All-Ireland titles with club and county- but success doesn't define him- or come close. Rory is a Social worker, involved with the Travelling community, children and working in prisons. It's a challenging job- but he loves what he does. It's a facinating insight into a challenging career that Rory was born to do.
Cut from different cloth, with a unique outlook on life- it's the brilliant Rory O'Carroll on the GAA Social.

- 89 - Neil McManus- the journey comes to an end
Neil McManus on the GAA Social has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling. What a career. 2007 he made his debut with Antrim, he'll continue to wear the maroon of Cushendall. But there's so much more. His love of the sport, how he describes hurling, its future and the rural depopulation that's hitting the Glens of Antrim. But there's a plan- and McManus is leading! His father was evicted from his Belfast home when the troubles started- but instilled a community feel that's vibrant today in Cushendall. It's an incredible insight into one of the greats. Neil McManus on the GAA Social

We also talk officials in the game and Oisin is clear- it's time for 2 referees at the top of the game!
Mon, 19 Jun 2023 - 87 - Willie Anderson- Ireland rugby captain to playing Gaelic football. Coaching, life and why the GAA works- how it can improve?
Willie Anderson is a former Ireland rugby captain from a Protestant, Unionist background. Growing up in county Tyrone, marching on the 12th of July, Gaelic Games wasn't the jumper that fitted best. Life changes. Arrest in Argentina, threat of execution, before playing rugby in communist Romania changed his outlook on the place he calls home. In this podcast we hear the thoughts from a different background. Can the GAA evolve to attract more Unionists? Should they? Willie Anderson played Gaelic football, his son Thomas also played. Thomas also played professional rugby for Ulster, Connacht and Ireland, winning an U20 Grand Slam. He sent a very powerful letter years later.
There's a lot more. A United Ireland and challenges the debate provides for sports and society. What does Willie think? The former Irish captain battled alcohol addiction. He doesn't drink anymore. He was also involved in a car accident that resulted in the death of a young boy. It's been a life of challenges- but every single fence has been climbed. Willie has played Gaelic Games, helped clubs with fundraisers, and has aided various clubs and counties throughout the years at the highest level- including Armagh. The Cathal O'Rourke story is probably the best line in the podcast- and there are many!
Willie looks to the future- "Tell your children you love them everyday, because you don't know when the day will arrive"
The sport needs winners and losers, even at underage. He doesn't miss! It's a different podcast, but a unique insight into Gaelic Games from one of the finest people we've ever had on the show. Willie Anderson is a remarkable man, with a remarkable family. We hope you enjoy.
PS- his son Jonathan is one of the globes best fashion designers. Rihanna's outfit at the Superbowl half-time show? Beyonce? LeBron James?
PPS- He's now working with James Bond. What a man, what a family!
Wed, 14 Jun 2023 - 86 - The Glory of hurling,Tailteann Cup quarter-finals and who will qualify (and in what position) for the Sam Maguire knockoutMon, 12 Jun 2023
- 85 - The remarkable Sambo McNaughton- Speech impediment, won't talk, healing with hurling, improvement of the game-where is football
Sambo McNaughton is perhaps the most recognisable hurler in Ulster history. He scaled new heights with Antrim and Cushendall, managed both teams after retirement and continues to manage and coach today. His name is recognisable everywhere in Ireland- he doesn't even need a surname! Behind the man is a life struggling with a speech impediment, a troubled childhood and a society that was unforgiving to anyone that was 'a little bit different'
In this podcast we explore a life where even answering a phone is impossible. With Brutal honesty, Sambo opens up on how the condition shaped his life, his lifelong friendship with John McKillop (The legend of Cushedall) and how it steered his mindset. It's a stunning listen.
We talk hurling, it's future and Sambo comes up with a radical plan to help- especially for developing Ulster teams.
Sambo also chats life, football, watching Tony Scullion, Greg Blaney and Henry Downey in his packed bar where everyone's attention was on the game. He feels it's different now.
The first 35 minutes of this podcast is raw and perhaps the most powerful yet. Sambo McNaughton on the GAA Social. Words wouldn't do him justice. He has out ultimate respect
Wed, 07 Jun 2023 - 84 - The state of the game- is Gaelic football in trouble?Mon, 05 Jun 2023
- 83 - Philly McMahon- Jim Gavin explained, Cluxton, being different, IRA. Driving success in life and football. A United Ireland
Philly McMahon has lived, and living a remarkable life.
Under Pat Gilroy and Jim Gavin he thrived. We dig deep into both managers- what they brought and why they were different. Gavin is specifically interesting. Bringing the Dublin team to the Battle of the Somme in France and camping in an army barracks. The team to sleep outside and work life out for themselves. He was trying to pick his captain. Remarkable insight into Jim Gavin as a manager. Born in Ballymun, his Father joined the IRA, was shot and escaped from a court appearance. He spent 30 years on the run. His travels to Belfast on the train, his father was his ‘Uncle Frank’ From that background- one of the most successful footballers burst into life. At underage and senior level Philly started life as a forward before reaching his true calling in the full-back line. Eight All-Irelands with Dublin, 12 Leinster titles, Five Allianz League titles and double All-star. He was also nominated for Player-of-the-year but didn’t get it. Why? The Kieran Donaghy incident possibly. Does Philly regret it? We ask him. We’re not so sure about the answer.
There’s more in this feature length episode of the GAA Social. His best player, marking Colm Cooper, the Aidan O’Shea incident still irks. There’s more. What his father had in his wallet that was found a year after he died and who (apart from Dublin) Philly would like to see win the All-Ireland.
Will he be manager someday? Could it be Antrim?
There's also drugs, its problem in society and the impact of the death of his brother.
It’s Philly McMahon on the GAA Social with Thomas Niblock & Oisin McConville

- 81 - Kevin Hughes. Football, loss, death, Tyrone. The most powerful GAA Social yet. Darragh O'Se & Kerry, Mickey Harte winning Sam
Kevin Hughes lost his sister Helen and brother Paul in two separate car accidents. He was on the pitch when Paul McGirr died representing Tyrone in an Ulster championship match. Cormac McAnallen was his captain and friend. It's a life of loss- but remarkably Kevin has found a way to survive, grow and cope. He was Man-of-the-match in the historic All-Ireland final of 2003 when Tyrone won their first All-Ireland.
This is a story of loss, resolve, laughter and pain. Kevin Hughes is one of the most remarkable people we've ever come across.
It's also 20 years since Tyrone won their first All-Ireland. Oisin & Kevin battled it out in Croke Park that September day, the podcast sparks some terrific memories (some bad ones for Oisin)
The GAA Social- the brilliant Kevin Hughes
Wed, 24 May 2023 - 80 - All-Ireland preview/review- Tailteann cup. Hurling King once again & Oisin knows who will win Sam Maguire. Donegal of old?
It's the GAA Social on a Monday, Oisin and Thomas review the GAA action over the weekend and preview what's to come. It's also time to reflect on the recent impact of the podcast series in the immediacy of recording, perhaps, our most powerful yet. (We know we have said that before)
Down footballers enjoyed Thurles- on the pitch and slightly off it too?
The GAA Social Extra- we hope you enjoy
Mon, 22 May 2023 - 79 - Francie Bellew in his only ever sit-down interview. Nothing off-limits
We don't know how exactly it happened- but it has.
Armagh legend Francie Bellew agreed to sit down and take part in his first and only sit-down interview. In a wide ranging conversation we dig into being shy, how he was bundled into a car and brought to Armagh training and his memories of playing in Orange. He's not a fan of modern day football, he hasn't been back at Clones since he retired but his kids are opening the lid on football again. He reveals his toughest ever opponent, battles with Tyrone and how he was tricked!
It's not all memories and smiles. The controversial Mickey Linden challenge is debated. Mayobridge played Crossmaglen in the Ulster club final in 2014 and Linden lost two front teeth. He was removed from the field after 14 minutes. Francie reveals they've never talked since. Maybe they will?
Francie explains his cult status and although he struggles to understand it- he is aware it’s a thing in GAA circles. Quick, witty and surprisingly frank. It’s the GAA Social with All-Ireland winner Francie Bellew
Thu, 18 May 2023 - 78 - Shane McGuigan exclusive- The GAA Social at the Ulster finalMon, 15 May 2023
- 77 - The GAA Social LIVE -from Seamus Heaney HomePlace, Bellaghy Co Derry. The Leinster & Ulster finals have arrived.
Tickets sold out in 6 minutes. A capacity Seamus Heaney HomePlace welcomed the GAA Social with a live studio audience. Two provincial finals to look forward to, questions from the audience & one lucky Castledawson boy managed to convince Michael Murphy back down the Glenshane and take his club for a training session. You don't ask, you don't get.
Former Derry All-Ireland winner Eamonn Burns talks about his cancer journey, Teaching in Derry city, being dropped and calling Eamonn Coleman to make his point. It's different and it's live.
Thank you everyone for your support, it really does mean the world.
Wed, 10 May 2023 - 76 - Oisin McConville- playing day after dad died. Ulster & Leinster final previews. Masters football, Hurling is king. Kerry KingsMon, 08 May 2023
- 75 - Brian Canavan- Double murder in Poyntzpass, a life in football, last day of cancer treatment & Derry/Armagh 2000 final reborn
In one of the most powerful GAA Social podcasts to date, former Armagh manager Brian Canavan joins Thomas and Oisin. He talks football, one of the most high profile shootings in his bar during the Troubles- weeks before the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. Brian also talks living with Cancer, refereeing and perhaps unusually, there's plenty of laughs too.
In 1998, best friends Damien Trainor and Phillip Allen were killed in a shooting in Poyntzpass. The LVF burst into the Railway Bar and shot dead the life-long friends. Brian Canavan owns the Railway Bar. Both Damien and Phillip were innocent locals, discussing the upcoming wedding of Phillip. Damien was due to be best man.
It's one of the most high profile shootings during the troubles. It occurred weeks before the Good Friday Agreement was signed and notable because of David Trimble and Seamus Mallon, together visiting the homes of both victims. Canavan brings us back to that day. It's a remarkable moment in time.
Canavan along with Brian McAlinden managed Armagh to back-to-back Ulster championships in 1999 & 2000. It's 23 years since Armagh beat Derry on that famous day at Clones. Oisin McConville scored the winning point after a dubious free was awarded.
This week marks a special occasion for Brian. For the first time, he discusses his cancer treatment and on Wednesday May 4th will receive his final radiotherapy treatment. That's the plan!
Brian was BBC co-commentator for almost 30 years, we reflect on those days, the battles when in charge of Armagh and a refreshing outlook on life. Brian and his wife Geraldine go away for a night once a week, date night and still the best of friends. Life lessons.
It's an absorbing story of love, loss, football and life. It's the brilliant Brian Canavan on the GAA Social
Wed, 03 May 2023 - 74 - Greg McCabe- Armagh and Derry in Ulster final. Lucky Dublin & Louth 'could' win Leinster. Big talk
Greg McCabe is growing in the famous number 6 shirt that Kieran McGeeney made his own. An immense performance in the Ulster semi-final over Down, McCabe talks about the lure of an Ulster title, taking on Derry and brings us on the Armagh journey. He’s a player on top form.
The podcast also talks Dublin, their escape from the clutches of Kildare and we ask a question- that doesn't seem as rhetorical as it once did
'Could Louth win the Leinster championship’
Mickey Harte hopes so. The Sligo express is going the right way- but is Galway a bridge too far?
Thomas & Oisin disagree over hurling & football and Harry Redknapp even gets a mention on the podcast.
It's the GAA Social Extra. Lovely
Mon, 01 May 2023 - 73 - Barry O'Hagan- Down star player- surgery, Conor Laverty, recovery, family and making a difference
Barry O’Hagan is a week out of career threatening surgery. A Triple reconstruction of knee ligaments, a procedure that was dramatically changed 30 minutes before operation. The Hilltown man is the marquee Down forward- until a Saturday night against Antrim in February! In this podcast we examine and dig into living with injury, processing it and beginning the long road to recovery. It’s a fascinating insight into the trauma of missing out. Football really is life. Barry is from Clonduff, rival parish of Kilcoo. So how did he feel when Conor Laverty became manager? His response is brutally honest! What O’Hagan does provide is an insight into a new manager- how he’s galvanised a young squad and move them in the right direction. It’s absorbing and a rare insight. Oisin predicts his Ulster final and we also dig into the role of Jim McGuinness with Down. Interesting…. Barry is married with two young children. We look at the challenges of family life with sporting performance. It's becoming uncommon in a modern inter-county changing room. Plenty of laughs, insights and a brutually honest assessment of life as an intercounty GAA player. Barry O'Hagan on the GAA Social
Wed, 26 Apr 2023 - 72 - Michael Murphy & Pat Havern join the GAA Social Extra from Newry. Big weekend of action
With Oisin on championship duty, Michael Murphy jumps on the podcast with Thomas- joined by 1-3 Down hero Pat Havern. The Down full-forward talks expectations with Down, a big championship win, the inside track on Conor Laverty & taking a penalty he wasn't due to hit. Pat also looks forward to an Ulster semi-final with Armagh- can they win?
We also reflect on some of the key talking points over the weekend and Michael predicts the 2023 Ulster final (Plaster it over the changing room walls)
The GAA Social- on a Monday. Oisin is back on Wednesday
Mon, 24 Apr 2023 - 71 - PJ McCamphill. A life in hurling, 55 years in Kenya & making a real difference in life. Hurling in homily. An uplifting podcast
Fr PJ McCamphill has spent more than 50 years in Africa as a missionary. He's survived murder attempts. All this, because he left Ireland and the sport he adores to help others less fortunate. Yet people in Africa, according to PJ, are the happiest on the planet- why is that?
This podcast is a unique insight into life in Africa, spreading the Gospel of GAA, playing every trick in the book to get home for hurling and the day RTE scooped him for 'sneaking' a trip home to watch Dunloy in the All-Ireland final.
PJ started Frankie's Nursery in 2005- a school in memory of former Dunloy hurler Frankie McMullan. Frankie died by suicide in 2004- but his legacy lives on. The school provides free education in an area where it would be impossible to be educated- unless you came from money! Almost 2000 children now have an education in one of the most deprived areas in the world. Some of the first students are now in University- all because of a hurling man, with a hurling idea that blossomed in Africa. The school has a 100% pass rate.
Last year Tyrone Gaelic footballer Conor Meyler, Antrim hurler Neil McManus and Mayo All-star Aidan O'Shea led a 50 strong GAA group to Kenya. Frankie’s Nursery was one of the areas visited.
Fr PJ has Thomas & Oisin in fits of laughter as the GAA Social offers something a bit different. Enjoy a fascinating hour in life, hurling, sport and thought with PJ McCamphill. A joy.
Wed, 19 Apr 2023 - 70 - Ryan O'Toole- Monaghan match-winner. A championship debut to remember
Ryan O'Toole joins Thomas Niblock and Oisin McConville after a day he'll never forget. When the GAA world expected him to go for a point- O'Toole shocked everyone (except himself) and shot for goal. The reward is a place in the Ulster semi-final against Derry. In the immediate aftermath, Ryan reveals walking away from Monaghan, why he did it and how he came back. Mickey Harte joined Oisin and Michael Murphy in the BBC Studio and at half-time, pretty much dismissed the chance of a second-half come back. Needless to say, Oisin was waiting on the wings at full-time!
We reflect on a comfortable win for Rory Gallagher & co over Fermanagh
The GAA Social, with Ryan O'Toole in Omagh.
Mon, 17 Apr 2023 - 69 - Sean Quigley. Uncut, honest, raw and with edge. This is his story on championship week.
Fermanagh's Sean Quigley provides a fascinating and unvarnished insight into the mind of a leading Gaelic footballer on this week's podcast.
Straight-talking Quigley bites back at the podcast, discusses the media's attitude towards Fermanagh and the state of modern inter-county football - are players too sensitive these days?
He also explains why he wouldn't allow a nutritionist into his home and analyses the evolving role of the marquee forward.
The Roslea man offers insight into the mind of Rory Gallagher ahead of this weekend's Ulster Championship quarter-final - but he isn't sure if the Derry boss is still a "Fermanagh man".
Funny, moving, serious and fun, Sean offers a refreshingly honest assessment of the modern game - and his place in it - on the latest GAA Social.
Wed, 12 Apr 2023 - 68 - Party in the Bronx- and Roscommon! Cork Crisis, Mayo, An Antrim thesis still true. Armagh Unknown & Wicklow blossom
What a night it was in New York, a first ever championship win in Connacht and a victory up there with the Yankees 1998 season (well, sort of)
In '98, did the Yankees move off 1st base, risking a few yards, just like the NY goalkeeper? Should it have been spotted by the officials? It was however an amazing win for NY and as one tweeter told the GAA Social 'It's the best championship moment of the season- and it's only the first week'
It wasn't a good week for Antrim. Their performance against Armagh was flat- where does the county go from here? Armagh against Cavan might be a bit different?
We look at Cork and what's gone wrong, Sligo win, Tipp too and two massive results for Laois and Offaly.
It's the GAA Social and plenty of questions for the Wickow manager after a stunning win over Carlow #AskOisin
Mon, 10 Apr 2023 - 67 - Paddy McBride- Leading Antrim, the Saffron dream, Armagh in championship & dealing with the death of his sister. Remarkable.
In March, Paddy McBride lost his sister Marie to suicide. In his only sit down interview, Paddy reflects on the journey his family have travelled since the tragedy and the pragmatic steps to heal their lives. It's a stunning listen. Paddy is also one of the top players in Antrim. 12 years playing senior, under seven different mangement teams- the podcast explores the challenges the county faces. Recovering from broken fingers, he's back fit again and will play this weekend in the opening weekend of the Ulster championship against Armagh. Antrim are not expected to win- but Paddy does. The St John's player also explains his passion for Antrim, aspirations for the future and developing Gaelic Games within a big urban environment. There's laughs, craic and serious football talk. Another packed episode of the GAA social. It's a stunning listen and our appreciation to Paddy for being so honest.
Wed, 05 Apr 2023 - 66 - Championship has arrived- Oisin McConville predicts what's aheadMon, 03 Apr 2023
- 65 - Brendan Devenney- like you've never, ever, heard him before. Football, helping children, Tragedy, Donegal commentator and life
This is one of our best ever podcasts. Brendan Devenney led Donegal for years, but they couldn't get across the line- Armagh & Oisin were the main roadblock. However this podcast digs deeper into the life of Brendan Devenny. Success, failures, helping chirldren in Africa and beyond. It's an education into living life now- and not planning too much for the future. There's also tragedy. Brendan lost his father and sister within a day in 2022. Two coffins in one house. It's raw, it's funny, it's emotional, there's the rave scene and glow sticks, all after his first match as a commentator (not co-commentator)
This is the life of Brendan Devenney- a brilliant man, a wonderful podcast.
Thu, 30 Mar 2023 - 64 - League finals preview- final day drama! Monaghan survival- the real story behind Armagh & Rian O'Neill. Cluxton & #AskOisinMon, 27 Mar 2023
- 63 - Niamh McLaughlin- the best gaelic footballer. 2022 POTY, 3 cruciates, Henry Shefflin, professional soccer and Australian rules
Three cruciate surgeries would finish most players- not Niamh McLaughlin! A professional footballer with Newcastle & Sunderland, a European championship final and a trip to the World Cup with Republic of Ireland shattered because of injury. Despite this, Niamh picks herself off the floor and earned the biggest individual accolade in Gaelic football- Player of the Year. It's a fascinating insight into drive, achievement and what makes her different?
In her only broadcast interview, Niamh explains why she's taken up an offer of playing professional Australian rules with Gold Coast Suns. The Donegal captain lifts the lid on the money involved and why she made the move to the AFLW.
Niamh also reveals her aspirations around amalgamation between the LGFA, GAA & Camogie Association. It's honest!
Sit back and enjoy another revealing episode of the GAA Social
Tue, 21 Mar 2023 - 62 - Final League weekend preview
Louth were in division four. Three short years later, they are one game away from promotion to division one. It's a tough one though- Dublin in Croke Park. We reflect on the Louth project and ask where can they go? Is Mickey Harte the greatest ever- where does he sit? We reflect on a weekend of drama across the Allianz Leagues and preview the final weekend of action- including a Tyrone/ Armagh clinker- and the game is live on BBC this Sunday. David Clifford, his new sock look, Armagh negativity- Wicklow and Fermanagh within touching distance and we ask the question 'What year will the GAA make its competitions fair? It's all crammed into your Monday GAA Social with Thomas Niblock and Oisin McConville #AskOisin
