When we take time for teaching genre in primary grades, it's not just one more thing to teach on our already full plates. Learning to read is a journey and understanding genre can empower our students to keep searching for their next great read. This knowledge gives students the ability to understand what they enjoy reading, find books with similar traits, and branch out to try new things.

Classroom Management and training your class in your expectations and systems is never a "one-and-done" process. I know you understand that, but it's easy to forget to reset or retrain your students throughout the year. 

Even your car needs a tune-up once in a while, why don't we remember to do the same for our classroom procedures? Perhaps you know someone who is resisting doing this. I've seen it before... teachers who think retraining seems like a lot of time when they have so little or they're stubbornly insisting their students know what to do so they should just do it, or some other reason. Whatever the reason, it's a lie. It's definitely time for a tune-up even if things are running well.

Let's chat about teaching students to write by hand using both printing and the much-debated cursive. In our digital world, students physically write less and less every year and it turns out, that's a huge problem for their brains. 

Here's the skinny...a recent study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology found that physically writing created the best learning and memory of the material being studied. And that, as they say, is just the tip of the iceberg...

Let me ask you this...How often do your students answer a question about a character, the setting or something about a text and they don’t know why or how they came to that conclusion? They have NO text evidence to support their thinking.

What about this one...Do you have students who have no idea where to find evidence in a text or even what text evidence is?

And one more...Does the idea of teaching your students to use evidence from the text to support their answers seem daunting?

Well, guess what? Being a story detective and learning to find and use text evidence is actually really simple and can be lots of fun.

And your students need you, their teacher, to model, guide, and help them learn to incorporate the skills in their reading. What real teachers do is so valuable that it simply cannot be replaced by programs and apps. So save those programs and apps as reinforcement AFTER you've your students have learned the concepts, skills, and strategies.

Did you know…a student's phonic awareness skill is the BEST predictor of reading readiness and future reading development? So what is phonemic awareness?

Phonemic awareness is…the ability to hear, differentiate and flexibly manipulate units of sound in spoken language. That means skills like rhyming, separating sounds, blending sounds, substituting sounds, deleting sounds or adding sounds. I know that sounds a lot like what you teach with phonics, right?! It's not the same thing although phonemic awareness and phonics do work together when we get all the pieces in place.

Let’s talk about how we teach sight words. There are two camps with sight words – teach them and don’t. I’m just going to jump right in and tell you – I’m in the teach them camp.

Yes, there are many sight words your students can figure out. But there are just as many students that they can’t. Most sight words and their spellings don’t make sense to children. So, trying to decode them becomes a minefield.

I've got a simple, effective system for sight word instruction that will be a game changer for you and ALL of your students.

I know self care is the last thing you have time for, but it shouldn’t be. It should be in the top 3 on your list. Before work and before caring for someone else.

But, let’s start off with the basics of regular self care. I know you’ll tell me you don’t have time to work out, figure out healthier meals or just take time for yourself. You’re spent. Exhausted. There just is not enough time on your day.

I’m here to tell you…that’s exactly why you NEED to prioritize your self care. I believe you can’t afford to NOT take care of yourself. Don’t be the teacher who looks back this time next year and says the same things as this year. I’m exhausted and burnt out. There’s not enough time….

All I’m asking you to do is choose one goal for yourself this holiday season to help you come out the other side a better, more joyful you.

Teaching students to read is one of the most debated and misunderstood areas of education. 

We work so hard as teachers to help our students be successful and yet how often are you experience tears, sleepless nights and general stress because you're concerned about one of your students? All.the.time. 

Find out the widely accepted reading instruction method I was using that was not working like I thought it was [and what I use now].

So let's chat about [COVID approved] essentials I provide my students with for math both at home and in person.

Manipulatives for math in at the elementary level are essential, in my opinion. Why? Well, brain research tells us that the more senses we can engage in learning something new the better we retain the learning. Manipulatives do this for our students.

Teaching online is a whole different animal than teaching in a physical classroom.

There are some things you can do that will make things a bit easier. In this episode, I have a few ideas for you from my own struggles. While I have tons more ideas and tips, I didn't want to add to the overwhelm. So today... I'll just get you started with ideas and a few freebies.

Analyzing a text for better comprehension and to use evidence when talking about their reading is something I have taught even kindergarteners. Yes, you read that right. I know that seems really huge, even in 5th grade much less in kindergarten. But in the elementary grades it's not only something your students can do, it's not something we can ignore. There's so much to accomplish at the start of the school year, and so many extra tasks get added to your teacher plate whether you want them or not. Do you feel like you're fully prepared to teach reading and writing skills in an online or blended classroom model?

While teaching at a workshop this last weekend, I realized what a disservice is being done to teachers who still don't know what kind of teaching they'll be doing in the fall. The uncertainty of not knowing what the school model will be is stressful and exhausting. Teachers are planners. We want to be prepared. However, it feels impossible to be prepared when we don't know what we are preparing for.

Well, I'm here to tell you being prepared is something you can start to do now even if you don't know what the fall will look like. We simply have to have a plan for what to change for each teaching model. So here goes...

Michelle Dunham and I talk about how to simply create a culture of readers and book lovers in your classroom by what you read, how you pair books and the conversations you start with your students. The steps are truly simple. Like anything new, it's not always easy at first, but the more you prep and practice the easier it becomes. It all starts with a love of books, a few paired books and the heart of a teacher.

Eliminating racism is a daunting task. No big, important goal is achieved in a day. While we can't eliminate racism today, we can start or restart our efforts. If we all make a simple 1% change each month in what we do, think, say or in supporting organizations that work to end racism, it will add up to big wins.

Figuring out where to start can be overwhelming, but as teachers, we have an easy place to start - our classroom libraries.

Helping students become committed readers is a daunting task, at best. And while there isn't a straight path for each student to follow, there is a method that actually works. Now's the time to start planning changes to your program for the coming year to keep the reading and learning going no matter what school looks like next year.
