- 72 - Unfit to lead: Why these military leaders failed
Today we’re travelling back in time to explore some of the most breath-takingly incompetent historic leaders, from the Crusades to Vietnam. In this episode we discover how lack of communication and misplaced sense of superiority caused tragedies and deaths of thousands of ordinary soldiers that could have otherwise be avoided.
Narrated by Stephen Rashbrook, we discuss the British retreat from Kabul, the Boer (Boar) War, Dunkirk and the Falklands Campaign.

Fri, 23 Jul 2021 - 51min - 71 - The Man Who Killed Richard III
This is a story of conspiracy and betrayal, of a lust for power and a lost allegiance; the story of the man who killed King Richard III.
In this documentary we set out to prove that the Welshman Sir Rhys ap Thomas, master of Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire, killed King Richard III, changing the course of British history. Sir Rhys ap Thomas had sworn allegiance to King Richard III. He had accumulated lands and status in Wales that were dependent, in part, on his loyalty to Richard. But at the Battle of Bosworth he betrayed him, fighting on the side of Henry Tudor. He dealt the fatal blow to Richard III. We uncover what drove Rhys ap Thomas to betray not only his master but a King – and we reveal his remarkable story; from a childhood embroiled in the War of the Roses and exile to the continent, to a determined and ambitious man who brought an abrupt end to the Plantagenet line, carving the way for his own rise to power at the heart of the Tudor dynasty.

Fri, 02 Jul 2021 - 44min - 68 - Tornado Dowm
This is the second part of a two part episode. Check back in our feed to listen to part one 'The RAF Pilots Tortured During The Gulf War '. Operation Desert Storm was only a day old when Tornado pilots John Peters and John Nichol were shot down in Iraqi territory and subsequently tortured and paraded on TV. Bruised and battered, the two men mumbled incoherently into the camera, and instantly became symbols around the world of Saddam’s savagery and aggression. In Tornado Down the two pilots break their silence, and in a series of moving and candid interviews, reveal the physical and psychological torment they suffered at the hands of their captors; the brutal torture sessions; the elation of their release; and their determination not to crack in the face of such cruelty and humiliation.

Fri, 09 Apr 2021 - 49min - 56 - Warlords: Churchill vs Roosevelt
An examination of the mental battles waged between 20th-century leaders Winston Churchill and Franklin D Roosevelt during the first two years of their relationship. A duel of false promises, evasion and delusion ensued, which was far removed from the more familiar image of friendship and loyalty. World War II was not only a military conflict. It was also a series of private psychological battles waged by the four great leaders: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. In these mental duels, the 'warlords' lied, schemed, charmed, flattered and cheated to win.

Fri, 26 Mar 2021 - 42min - 54 - The Great Nazi Cash Swindle
During the Second World War SS Intelligence developed a secret weapon to undermine and ruin the British war effort – it was a weapon made of paper. Operation Bernhard – the Nazi codename for this covert project – became the biggest currency forgery in history, counterfeiting, at today’s value, over three billion pounds. The 104-strong workforce who produced the money were all Jewish prisoners isolated in a special workshop at Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin. With the threat of death hanging over them they skilfully printed banknotes, which the Bank of England described as: “the most dangerous forgeries ever seen”. For the first time four of these Jewish prisoners speak out about their enforced collaboration with the Nazis, what happened to the fake millions they produced, and how they themselves survived, by a miracle, to tell the story.

Fri, 29 Jan 2021 - 35min - 47 - Richard Nixon's ruthless ambition
Nixon In The Den develops a fresh account of Nixon and his ruthless ambition to escape a loveless, impoverished background. Historian David Reynolds argues that Nixon was genuinely successful as an international statesman, with historic visits to Communist China and the Soviet Union in 1972 helping thaw the Cold War. Yet, behind the scenes, Nixon’s diplomacy was a story of intrigue and rivalry. The very methods that won Nixon acclaim on the international stage also doomed his presidency in the infamous Watergate scandal. With the help of Nixon’s scribbled memos, audio recordings and rarely seen home movie footage and photos, this film throws new light on Nixon’s obsessive secrecy, relentless deception and paranoid mistrust of key aides, especially his foreign policy adviser Henry Kissinger.

Sat, 02 Jan 2021 - 32min - 43 - The Real Jesus Christ
Today, on December 25th, we fittingly bring you a story about Jesus. After his, Jesus' followers split into two factions. They held radically different views about their leader – his identity, his message and his vision of the future. One of those factions flourished under the guiding genius of St Paul – and eventually wrote its version of the story in the Gospels of the New Testament. The other faction withered and died away, leaving behind no written records. But what if the losers in this power struggle had written their version of the story? The Real Jesus Christ reconstructs that lost biography of Jesus: an alternative version of his life as it would have been told by those who lost the battle for the succession, but who knew him better than anyone else – his closest followers and his family.

This is part two of our two-part episode titled Sexpionage.
Sexpionage tells the stories of two women who were seduced by secret agents working for the East German intelligence service, the Stasi. At the height of the Cold War the Stasi would regularly despatch their agents to the West German capital, Bonn, armed with the task of forming long term relationships with single women working at embassies or government ministries. These women were unwittingly tapped for top secret information which was then passed on to the East. Both Gabriele Kliem and Margaret Hike had no idea that their lovers were spies until both women were arrested for treason. This film tells the story of the years they spent with their secret agent lovers and explores the feelings they are left with after the most significant relationships of their lives were revealed to be a sham.

Fri, 11 Dec 2020 - 20min - 40 - The Royal Family: A hub of jealousy and rivalry
This is part two of our story about the Royal Family in the mid 20th Century. The Coronation in 1953 appeared to be a glittering triumph for the House of Windsor. But behind the scenes there was a three-cornered story of jealousy and rivalry at the highest level.
On one side Prince Philip was at odds with the Queen Mother over his desire to modernise the monarchy. On the other the old Queen was jealous of her daughter's sudden rise to power. The Coronation was a critical year for the young Queen Elizabeth. She was preparing to undergo the most ancient and important royal ritual, but the two people closest to her, the Queen Mother and Prince Philip had very different ideas about how it should be handled. Philip, the dashing but dangerously modern consort, was anxious that the Coronation should not be simply a stuffy replay of previous reigns. He wanted 'some features relevant to the world today'. But he was fiercely resisted by the Queen Mother and by Princess Mary, who referred to Philip as 'the Hun'.
The new Queen was caught in the middle. In Coronation Coup, we learn that Mountbatten, who had engineered the marriage between Philip and Elizabeth wanted the family name changed to Windsor-Mountbatten after her accession. Also, while the new Queen largely sided with her mother over arrangements for the Coronation, she backed Philip over perhaps the most important decision to televise the ceremony inside Westminster Abbey. In doing so she set a precedent for television to be given access to the most intimate rituals.

Fri, 20 Nov 2020 - 36min - 37 - Do Sodom and Gomorrah actually exist?
Sodom And Gomorrah – the names of these two Biblical cities have long since become bywords for sexual immorality and licentious behaviour. Home of excess and wickedness, they were destroyed by a vengeful God under a hail of fire and brimstone. However, most people regard the story as a metaphorical warning against sin as no strong archaeological evidence for the existence of Sodom and Gomorrah has been found – until now...
Increasingly sophisticated technology has enabled Mike Sanders to make out artificial structures on the bed of the Dead Sea. He believes he can prove that not only are they the relics of the two cities, but also that they were probably destroyed in a catastrophe about 5,000 years ago, the ruins hidden by the advancing waters of the Dead Sea. In Sodom And Gomorrah we follow him as he dives into the depths of the sea and searches for more tantalising clues.

Fri, 13 Nov 2020 - 30min - 36 - The True Cost Of Peace After WW1
Professor David Reynolds uncovers a story of wounded egos, political scheming and strategy behind the lines as statesmen and generals haggled over the terms of peace, while the soldiers fought on the front-line.
In a journey that takes him through command centers and battlefields, he explores why half-a-million men were killed or wounded in the bitter endgame of the ‘Great War’ and unravels how Germany ultimately plunged to total defeat. November 11th proved to be a doomed peace, a prelude to a century-long struggle for mastery of Europe. David Reynolds argues that it was the frenetic politicking and brutality of the fighting in 1918 that sowed the seeds of the even bloodier Second World War just 20 years later.

Fri, 23 Oct 2020 - 37min - 33 - How Charles And Diana's Divorce Affected Prince William (feat. Kate Middleton, Prince William & Rupert Graves)
Nearly thirty years after his parents exchanged their wedding vows, Prince William walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey with his new bride.
Timeline Tapes is the show that brings you iconic documentaries, in podcast form. The documentaries are made for TV so our host Nate Fisher will be filling in any blanks to make sure you don't miss a thing.
'My Mother Diana' looks at how Diana’s life, her relationship with the House of Windsor, the media and the public have shaped her eldest son, Prince William. When a twenty year-old Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, their wedding at St Paul’s was watched by billions; it was the last great royal wedding to galvanise the British public. But that relationship would develop into a romantic tragedy, whose effects would be more profound than anyone could have imagined. In his marriage to Kate Middleton, Prince William is entering into a new and independent stage of his life…a life in which his mothers influence and presence appear centre-stage and ever-present.. It is easy to forget that William’s formative years were not the idyll with the ’Princess of People’s Hearts’…rather they took place in the midst of a vicious divorce battle. William’s loyalties divided and fought over during the War of the Wales.
‘My Mother Diana’ is the story of Charles and Diana's marriage from a new and revealing point of view. It’s the story of how their marriage shaped William. It explores the effect of his mother’s relationships, the tell-all book she collaborated on with Andrew Morton, the effects of her Panorama interview and William's reaction to his father’s relationship with Camilla. On the surface William appears to be a product of the old order, groomed by the House of Windsor. But William is the son of Diana – who transcended celebrity and transformed the monarchy. This film seeks to understand William by exploring his relationship with his mother and examines where William was as key moments of her later life played out; because what she went through made him who he is today Why did William propose using his mother’s engagement ring? And what does it tell us about this future King and the legacy of his mother Diana? Fourteen years after her death Diana’s influence appears undiminished. But will William be the King Diana wished him to be?

Timeline Tapes is the show that brings you iconic documentaries, in podcast form. The documentaries are made for TV so our host Nate Fisher will be filling in any blanks to make sure you don't miss a thing.
In the last programme of the series Francis focuses his attention on the Anglo-Saxon invasion.
Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a brand new historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.
Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinising the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.

Introducing: The Fault Line - Bush, Blair and Iraq
On September 11th 2001, as he faced incalculable losses after the terrorist attacks that day, President George W Bush made a call to his greatest international ally: British Prime Minister Tony Blair. 18 months later, Bush and Blair led a coalition into a war that went horribly wrong. David Dimbleby, one of the BBC’s best known news hosts and reporters, takes us back to those crucial 18 months. Talking to prime ministers, politicians, spies and weapons inspectors he asks how and why we came to invade Iraq. And as we experience an era of lies and mistrust - did the events of 17 years ago set the stage for the world we live in now?

Fri, 25 Sep 2020 - 38min - 28 - Sparta's utopian dream and its bloody downfall
Timeline Tapes is the show that brings you iconic documentaries, in podcast form. The documentaries are made for TV so our host Nate Fisher will be filling in any blanks to make sure you don't miss a thing.
The Spartans chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever witnessed.
A civilization that was founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state, and the perfect warrior.
Classical historian Bettany Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life: homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This can be aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persian invaders and show the rest of the world what it meant to be Spartan.
In the final episode the war between Sparta and Athens reaches a brutal and bloody climax. Sparta finally emerged victorious; now the most powerful city-state in Greece, Sparta became an imperial power. But under the fascinating, flawed King Agesilaus, the dreams of the Spartan Utopia came crashing down.
Sparta was ruthlessly militaristic and founded on a belief that good order and justice protected against chaos and lawlessness. Policed by secret spies the society was supported by a nation of slaves so all Spartan men had to do was fight. Boys were indoctrinated with the Spartan code of death and glory, separated from their mothers at seven and left to fend for themselves. It led Aristotle to comment that Sparta "turned its children into animals." The training continued throughout adolescence, the most able boys being let loose as death squads preying on the slave population to keep them quiet.
It cannot lay claim to the philosophers or artists of Athens but Sparta contributed as much to western civilisation as Athens did. Indeed it was Sparta, not Athens that was the first city to offer citizenship to its inhabitants. To many, the ideals formed 2500 years ago in Sparta can be seen as a fore-runner of modern-day totalitarianism.
By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth-rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves, and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction. Eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to a stop for Roman tourists who came to view the bizarre sado-masochistic rituals.

Programme two of this series explores the bitter rivalry between Sparta and Athens and their startlingly different views of women. They were two cities with totally opposed views of the 'good life'. For Athens, Sparta was a frightening place that turned its children into fighting machines. But worse still were Sparta's women: liberated, independent, opinionated, they took an active part in sport, raced horses and chariots, celebrated nudity and wielded power in the absence of their men. They were an affront to Athenian notions of femininity. When war between Sparta and Athens finally came, it raged for decades and split the Greek world. Until, on the island of Sphacteria, the reputation of Sparta's famed warriors for fearlessness was shockingly undermined.

This is the second part of our story about the Hitler survival myth and how the confusion that surrounded his death in a Berlin bunker led to rumours that he escaped. Eisenhower believed he was still alive saying “we have been unable to unearth one tangible piece of evidence of Hitler’s death.” Newly unearthed FBI files reveal thousands of alleged Hitler sightings from Ireland to Venezuela. With rumours of his escape persisting for decades, and growing evidence that Nazis were hiding out in the jungles and remote corners of Latin America, today the alleged survival of the Fuhrer remains one of the world's most popular and treasured myths.
