- 131 - #132 - Sigonella Reunion
Josh is joined by long time friends TAP and T.I.
All served together circa 2004-2007 at Sigonella, Sicily.
TAP is a Navy veteran, who has accomplished many great feats of strength and conditioning not only of himself but of some Major League friends of his. Pretty much he makes people awesome. He now works at Fort Johnson and tries to make US Army Soldiers as awesome as US Navy Sailors. He's finding it challenging.
T.I. is still active duty, serving as the voice of History and Heritage Command. Or, it might be all print work, not sure. At any rate, he's getting old and would like to retire soon. But, the O4 paycheck keeps showing up so he keeps showing up for muster.

Blame the government for losing trust of its citizens, not paying enough, and pushing minimum wage of a fast food worker to the competitive level of a U.S. Service member.

Josh is joined by Nick the Great Live in Studio. Catching up after being deployed 75% of 2023, going over some of the recent quality of life discussions. They talk about that committee hearing, and what really needs to happen. Getting married for BAH. That statistic of more under 25 yr old military members have kids than civilians. And of course, the recent NAVADMIN about various BS distraction changes, that top brass hopes will help Sailors stop asking about beards. Update: Drinks. were drank and only some of these things got talked about. Other topics not planned for were, officers hands in their pockets, Sailors w/o GED are better than you think, USS Kidd and more.

Tue, 11 Oct 2022 - 1h 42min - 94 - #94 - What Do They Do Though?
Recent shop talk about who has a bigger influence on crew morale led to a heavy bias of junior Sailors putting all their eggs in the CO basket. Even more so, was the underlying question of, "What's the point of the CMC and what is the MCPON even there for?" Josh pulls up an article from 5 years ago celebrating the 50th anniversary of the MCPON office, and breaks down some of the feelings highlighted in it. He the addresses how some of those feelings trickle down and leave that sour taste in Sailors mouths as to why the CMC position even exists.

In this episode we ask the question about about how the sayings "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" and how that's similar good or bad to "what happens in the mess, stays in the mess." Do these saying automatically have a negative connotation to them? What are the first thoughts that come to your own mind when you hear them. Do sayings like this lend to a negative perception of the Chiefs Mess, that junior Sailors directly relate to bad conduct being swept under the rug?

Will this be the year that he puts the past behind, and steps through the door?
Tue, 28 Sep 2021 - 50min - 56 - #56 - Before the Season with Mike
Mike visits us in the studio asking some questions and sharing with myself and brother-in-law Jerome, about the upcoming CPO Season and how he's feeling going into these final couple weeks before results come out. For those that don't know or unaware, U.S. Navy Chiefs are selected once a year by a board of Master Chiefs (E9) and high ranking Officers through a highly competitive and "secretive" board. Members sitting the board are not known until after the results are released. Being selected to Chief Petty Officer can be considered the culmination on ones enlisted career. Stay tuned for more about the CPO season as trying begins in the next week.

Why Capt Crozier and LtCol Scheller were wrong in there actions, and how they are polar opposites. Lastly we touch on the CPO + Officer relationship and how it's presented from the Wardroom side of things. Enjoy.

- 53 - #53 - Let's Celebrate pt.3
Wrapping up this trilogy with some of everyone's favorite discussion. At the end of last week's episode, Nick asked CJ, "What was the hardest thing he struggled with during the Season?" What we talk about, you'll rarely hear out loud for everyone to hear. It's not all brotherly/sisterly love and respect. The process is flawed, and we share our experiences about it. From command eval rankings to Navy wide boards, there's always a good sea story that can be shared to bring your career and other's intentions into the spotlight. Vendetta's are real, but do you know how to spot them out? What are we looking forward to in retirement, as fathers out of the uniform. Raising young men, where are we misstepping, and how can we learn from our own childhood upbringing, to be better fathers for our own children. Enjoy!
Tue, 31 Aug 2021 - 1h 16min - 52 - #52 - Let's Celebrate pt.2
Let's talk some street shit. Do snitches actually get stitches? Is there honor among thieves? We don't know, so we jumped into the Olympic pool of opinions surrounding Simone Biles stepping away from competition briefly. Was it more to do with her prescription drugs or everything else being talked about? When does a drug become performance enhancing? Was bootcamp as easy as we talk shit about? Or do we tell ourselves lies about how great of a little recruit we were. Enjoy!

Changed commands and got the "What are you?" question. I don't stay up on that soapbox for too long, jump off and into why the worst kind of people to work with are miserable people. Ones I've encountered lately, and why I won't be messing with them. After that, let's talk about parents needing "me/us" time without their kids, and why I think that's BS. Two Dad's, years ago made the decision as Philippine nationals to follow a dream, and join the US Navy, to change the course of their families forever. Did they know it at the time? Probably not. But, their children's own Naval careers' now prove it as they carry on the names of their fathers proudly. Not following in their footsteps or overshadowed by stories of grandeur, but blazing their own trails, making a name for themselves, as they carry out the legacy of service.

Who can lead a big time MCU movie, isn't a conversation anymore. Then we jump into some trailers of what's coming out soon, Shang Chi, Eternals, & Spider-man!
Tue, 27 Jul 2021 - 1h 33min - 46 - #46 - Once a Chief, Always a Chief. Situational.
A saying that is permeated throughout the CPO initiation season, "Once A Chief, Always A Chief"....though when asked, many would give a varying degree of what that means. Partly because it means something different to each Chief, and maybe no one truly knows? The most familiar would be the Chiefs that decide to turn in their Anchors for Bars, and join the Wardroom as Limited Duty Officers. In this episode I have two friends, both former Chiefs, who made that choice. We talk about what what it means to them when they hear, "Once A Chief, Always A Chief".
Tue, 20 Jul 2021 - 1h 24min - 45 - #45 - Raising Athletes with Nick
Nick joins me in the studio to discuss how parents approach raising children through sports. Specifically we talk AAU basketball. What he's experienced through his time coaching his son, and things he sees as a spectator in the crowd watching other teams and families. How the game is played, and how he's approaching it. The pressure parents feel or apply to their kids. Then we dive into the parallels of "the struggle" we teach kids to overcome through sports, compared to the struggle of raising Sailors in the Navy.
Tue, 13 Jul 2021 - 1h 39min - 44 - #44 - My Thoughts On Leadership
Leadership, is one of my least favorite topics to talk about, because I am not an expert and dislike being thought as such. There are many flaws within the military and it's building of leaders, the expectations of leaders, and what senior "leaders" feel they need to do to connect or be successful with the next generation. Let's explore some of these thoughts.

We talk about valued lessons, fond memories and the trials and tribulations of a their childhood. Then how they now as serving parents are trying to make our children's lives better. Thanks for listening.
Tue, 06 Jul 2021 - 1h 01min - 42 - #42 - Uncomfortable Service
James joins me in the studio to discuss how uncomfortable "thank you for your service" can make some feel. Is all service equal? Or are the pipe hitters going outside the wire, entitled or deserve more thanks than the combat filing Yeoman cruising the deep blue, enjoying port visits? We talk about base and ships possibly being renamed to more appropriate representation. Don't forget to like, subscribe, share with a friend and leave a review! Thanks for listening!

Fri, 18 Jun 2021 - 1h 11min - 39 - #39 - Choices to Create Wealth
Talking about the driving factors that Active Duty and Retirees might consider when on the road to their personal wealth. How does one define wealth for themselves? As active duty, are we missing the signs that we are more ready for retirement than what we tell ourselves? Do we lie to ourselves, cheating the next generation of Sailor out of the best version of a Leader.

Tue, 25 May 2021 - 1h 00min - 35 - #35 - Giving Advice
Often times, we in the military, in any capacity but especially senior leadership (I'm sure the same applies for civilian upper management) find ourselves being asked for, or giving freely advice to our peers, juniors and co-workers. Have you realized yet that your advice, isn't that great and sharing your experience on the matter, will be more helpful to the person? Let's talk about it.
