  • 210 - Spiritualism’s Rise: How a Hoax Shaped Supernatural Beliefs

This episode dives into the fascinating yet unsettling origins of the Spiritualist movement, tracing its roots back to the Fox sisters in 1848. What began as a simple prank in their New York home quickly spiraled into a phenomenon, captivating audiences across America and Europe with claims of communicating with the dead. Despite eventually confessing to their fraud, the sisters ignited a widespread interest in Spiritualism, influencing cultural beliefs about the afterlife and challenging traditional Christian doctrines. The episode also explores how elements of Spiritualism have persisted and, in some cases, seeped into modern Christian practices, prompting discussions about discernment and biblical boundaries in spiritual experiences. • 209 - Faith, Hope, and the Great Disappointment: The Story of Seventh-day Adventists

During a period of powerful preaching, large revival gatherings, and a movement to make Bibles accessible, a deep interest in faith, Bible study, and the second coming of Christ was sparked. This revival atmosphere led William Miller to predict the return of Jesus, but when his prophecy failed, the disappointment led to the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Through figures like Ellen White, the Adventist movement grew and developed distinctive beliefs around Sabbath observance, health, and soul sleep. Today, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has a global influence with over 19 million members. • 207 - Mary Baker Eddy: Founder of Christian Science and the Healing Ministry Movement

In this episode, we dive into the life and influence of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, and explore how her teachings continue to impact modern-day healing ministries. Born in 1821 to devout Congregationalist parents, Mary faced a life filled with hardship and illness, which led her to explore alternative healing methods. After experiencing relief through the controversial healer Phineas Quimby, she developed her own beliefs that combined his methods with her Christian faith. In 1875, she published her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which became the foundation of Christian Science. She founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, with a core belief in the power of prayer and spiritual healing, emphasizing that illness is a misperception that can be overcome through positive faith. Mary’s views, especially her rejection of the Trinity and her belief that the material world is an illusion, departed from traditional Christian teachings and aligned closely with Gnostic ideas. Despite these differences, her focus on spiritual healing has inspired contemporary healing ministries. Elements like faith healing, rejection of medical treatments, and practices such as “positive confession” in charismatic movements trace indirect roots back to Christian Science. • 206 - John Dewey’s Legacy: How Socialist Ideas Shaped American Education

In this second episode of our series on the Western public school system and its impact on the church, we delve into John Dewey's influence on American education and his alignment with socialist philosophies. Known as the “Father of American Education,” Dewey, who lived from 1859 to 1952, saw schools not just as places for learning but as tools for shaping society. His 1928 visit to Soviet Russia left a profound impression on him; he admired the Soviet educational system’s focus on social reform and collective values. Upon his return, Dewey incorporated aspects of this model into the American school system, advocating for a shift from individual knowledge to societal conditioning. In this episode, we explore how Dewey’s progressive education ideas introduced socialist principles into U.S. schools and how this change affected the role of education in shaping citizens. We also discuss the ways Dewey's philosophy impacted the American church by prioritizing secular humanism over Christian values in schools.
