Tue, 05 Nov 2024 - 00min - 207 - Mary Baker Eddy: Founder of Christian Science and the Healing Ministry Movement
In this episode, we dive into the life and influence of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, and explore how her teachings continue to impact modern-day healing ministries. Born in 1821 to devout Congregationalist parents, Mary faced a life filled with hardship and illness, which led her to explore alternative healing methods. After experiencing relief through the controversial healer Phineas Quimby, she developed her own beliefs that combined his methods with her Christian faith. In 1875, she published her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, which became the foundation of Christian Science. She founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, with a core belief in the power of prayer and spiritual healing, emphasizing that illness is a misperception that can be overcome through positive faith. Mary’s views, especially her rejection of the Trinity and her belief that the material world is an illusion, departed from traditional Christian teachings and aligned closely with Gnostic ideas. Despite these differences, her focus on spiritual healing has inspired contemporary healing ministries. Elements like faith healing, rejection of medical treatments, and practices such as “positive confession” in charismatic movements trace indirect roots back to Christian Science. Mon, 04 Nov 2024 - 00min - 206 - John Dewey’s Legacy: How Socialist Ideas Shaped American Education
In this second episode of our series on the Western public school system and its impact on the church, we delve into John Dewey's influence on American education and his alignment with socialist philosophies. Known as the “Father of American Education,” Dewey, who lived from 1859 to 1952, saw schools not just as places for learning but as tools for shaping society. His 1928 visit to Soviet Russia left a profound impression on him; he admired the Soviet educational system’s focus on social reform and collective values. Upon his return, Dewey incorporated aspects of this model into the American school system, advocating for a shift from individual knowledge to societal conditioning. In this episode, we explore how Dewey’s progressive education ideas introduced socialist principles into U.S. schools and how this change affected the role of education in shaping citizens. We also discuss the ways Dewey's philosophy impacted the American church by prioritizing secular humanism over Christian values in schools. Mon, 28 Oct 2024 - 00min - 205 - From Church Schools to State Schools: The Anti-Christian Foundation of Western Education
In this episode, we begin a two-part series examining the foundation of the Western public school system and its anti-Christian origins. We explore the early influence of the church on education, where the primary purpose of schooling was to enable individuals to read the Bible. The episode delves into the utopian experiment of Robert Owen, who attempted to separate children from their parents to shape them into ideal citizens—a project that ultimately failed. However, Owen's ideas laid the groundwork for modern educational systems designed to create obedient citizens. We also explore the life of Horace Mann, considered the father of public education, and his role in shaping the current public school system with a vision that increasingly distanced itself from Christian teachings. Mon, 21 Oct 2024 - 00min - 204 - My Speech: Teaching Theology to Kids
Hosea 4:6 says my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. In 2012, Barna researched teenagers' beliefs in evangelical churches. Here is what they found. • 80% believe Bible and Koran are both inspired books • 70% believe one must “earn” salvation • 58% have a Biblical worldview of God. • 57% believe their eternal destiny is up to them, not God. • 56% believe that Jesus Christ is/was simply human. • 40% believe the “principle” of the Bible, but not words as accurate. • 32% believe the resurrection of Christ occurred. • 18% believe in “moral absolute truth” • 1% have a Biblical World View. That was ten years ago. Today, these same people are in their late 20s or early 30s. They are the adults of our church. Here is the outcome • 1 out of 9 (11%) lost faith in Christianity • 4 out of 10 (40%) leave the Church but still call themselves Christian • 2 out of 10 (20%) disconnect from Church and express frustration about “church culture” and disconnect with society • 3 out of 10 (30%) stay involved in church Here are the five things the people who stayed in church as adults had in common. • Eating dinner together as a family five nights a week. • Serving in a faith-based ministry as a family. • Having at least one significant spiritual experience at home each week. • Being entrusted with significant ministry responsibility at a young age. • Having at least one adult mentor outside of the immediate family. In 2022, the Barna group did another study with teens, and they found that this is what they believed. • Jesus was a Justice Advocate – 35% • Jesus was crucified – 47% • Jesus was raised from the dead – 21% • Jesus is active in the world today – 21% Here is HOW to teach children ANYTHING. • Make it memorable. Keep it simple. Repeat it often. Here are the things your children must know. Inspiration of the Bible – God breathed into people the idea of what to write. The doctrine of God He created us. He is Holy, which means He is separated from sin. He is just; God does what is right and fair. But because He is love, He took the punishment. Jesus claimed to be God – when he forgave sins - when he commanded creation - when he called himself “I Am,” Trinity: God is not a human being; he is a different being. God is ONE God, One Being with three persons. Sin: Anything we think, say, or do that breaks God's law -The punishment of sin is being separated from God -We are all born with a "want to" sin - "God rescues us from sin. From the power of sin, and the penalty of sin." Salvation - The act of saving or rescuing from danger or harm - Redemption - To free from captivity by paying the fine. We are Justified through Grace by Faith Justified - God took our label of Sin and replaced it with the label of righteousness. Grace -- Unmerited Favor Favor - something good. The one you like the best is your favorite. Merit - Earn something- like a merit badge. - Award Unmerited Favor -- Getting something good you did not deserve Faith Is the belief that someone or something is who they say they are and can do what they say they can do. There, she passionately shared the Gospel, established schools, and empowered children through education. Louisa's journey of service brought her together with Robert Wodehouse, a fellow missionary with whom she fell in love and married. Together, they spread Christian teachings and provided practical support to local communities, leaving a lasting impact through their devotion and perseverance in the face of challenges. Louisa's story is a testament to the transformative power of faith, love, and resilience in mission work. Music: Today we will hear from Trinity Worship as they sing the hymn Tis so sweet. In our 20th episode of the Hymn Series, we look at the Spafford family, who faced unimaginable pain but found peace in God’s grace. They shared that peace with the world through a song. They then traveled to Jerusalem to share God’s love. They had a front-row seat in the Zionist movement. * Edit for clarification. At the time of the Chicago fire, the Spaffords were working with Moody, but they were members of a church under Rev. Young. They left that church and were no longer members before leaving to work in Jerusalem. Fri, 19 Jul 2024 - 00min - 170 - At The Cross, Isaac Watts, the father of Hymns
Today, we are looking at The Father of English Hymns. As I researched this story, I wondered how much it could occur today. The Bible says there is nothing new under the sun, which comes true in this story. If I said there was someone who was canceled and not allowed to attend college because of their political and religious views, even though they were by far one of the smartest people alive at the time… or if I said the church was divided about music and didn’t want any of this younger generational music in the church… or if I said it was a time of extreme political uncertainty… this is all things we could say is happening today. Welcome to the second episode of our summer series on the history behind the hymns. Today, we explore a hymn written around 1100. While most hymns have uplifting stories, this one, born from the Crusades, is a heart-wrenching tale that resonates deeply. It's a hymn that emerged from a time of great conflict, making its story one of the most emotionally impactful and difficult to hear. Tue, 16 Jul 2024 - 00min - 167 - Be Thou My Vision, A Hymn from the 700s
Today, I am excited to share the fascinating journey of what I believe to be the oldest hymn in our history. This hymn, written in the 700s, has a rich history. It started as a poem, then transformed into an Irish song in Galic, and it took centuries of cultural exchange before it was finally translated into English. The poem was written as a thank-you to a missionary to Ireland. He is the only missionary who has an international holiday named after him. Fri, 12 Apr 2024 - 00min - 161 - Charles Spurgeon: A Legacy of Faith and Controversy
Today, we pick up the narrative as Spurgeon faces a severe trial: being unjustly blamed for a tragic incident during one of his sermons. Despite grappling with deep depression, Spurgeon found solace in Isaiah 40:31 and returned to preaching with renewed vigor, leading to the remarkable growth of his congregation. On March 18th, 1861, the iconic Metropolitan Tabernacle was completed, becoming a beacon of hope for thousands in London. Spurgeon's sermons were printed and distributed widely, and mission work was funded across England. His innovative preaching style, including his famous "Wordless Book" sermon, left an indelible mark on Christian evangelism worldwide. Spurgeon's philanthropic efforts extended to establishing orphanages, supported by annual fundraisers that became must-attend events in South London. Despite facing personal danger and societal challenges, including the terror of Jack the Ripper's reign of terror, Spurgeon remained steadfast in his convictions, speaking out against social injustices such as slavery and theological deviations from Scripture. In 1887, Spurgeon controversially decided to leave the Baptist denomination due to theological drift, sparking intense backlash but refusing to compromise on core beliefs. Throughout his life, Spurgeon battled chronic illness, including gout, yet continued to preach and write prolifically until his passing in January 1892. Tue, 21 Nov 2023 - 00min - 141 - The Jews and the Church
Canaan, Israel, Judah, the holy land, the Promised Land, and Zion are all used throughout history to talk about a very tiny piece of land. The story of the Hebrew people started thousands of years ago when Jewish people, like Abraham and Moses, played important roles in history. Through them, God gave the world the Ten Commandments, the Old Testament, and the way to a relationship with the one and only true God. Sadly, Jewish people also faced tough times. In the 12th and 17th centuries, rumors and lies about them. During the time of the Crusades and the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215, some leaders in the church made laws that were unfair to Jewish people. They were made to wear special clothing to stand out, and this wasn't good. In Spain during the late 1400s and early 1500s, Jewish people were treated poorly.
