Strictly Soundtracks

It’s a MIXTAPE!! This week our trusty Soundtrack hosts take us on a different journey, each choosing some of their favourite tracks from the soundtrack universe. Dave, John and Henry all select a couple of tracks each, talk about the movie they’re from and the artists involved. Where else would you hear a range of songs from Donna Summer to Trent Reznor! There’s also Frankie Goes To Hollywood, David Bowie, Sylvester (not the tweety-pie version), Harry Belafonte, Eric Seera and Harry Nilsson.

Bond is back!  We enjoyed ourselves so much playing our favourite Bond themes a few weeks back so we decided to do it again.  This time, we might break some Strictly Soundtrack rules as we investigate rejected Bond songs. There’s some Billie Eilish, Gladys Knight, A-ha, Sheryl Crow, kd lang, Moby, Eurythmics, Carly Simon and a special choral treat at the end!

Boy Swallows Universe is a mini-series based on a novel by Trent Dalton. Set in 1983 it is a semi-biographical coming of age tale of Eli and his family as they try to survive in a world of violence, drugs and crime. But the soundtrack is amazing! Filled with 80s Aussie classics as well as some UK influences. You’ll enjoy songs from INXS, Paul Kelly, Skyhooks, The Church and then Yazoo, the Stranglers and The Rolling Stones.

We get all very tech-savvy this week as we talk about two movies, being 2023’s Blackberry and the 2013 biopic Jobs. Some great tunes as we discover how technology and business changes over the decades. You’ll hear music from wide group of artists including Moby, Elastica, Cat Stevens, Joy Division, Mark Morrison and Bob Dylan.

Bond, James Bond. Immortal words and some immortal theme songs too! This week the gang deep dive into their favourite songs from the movies, stemming from the 70s to more recent tracks. You’ll hear everything from Shirley Bassey to Garbage! Madonna, Sam Smith, Wings, Sheena Easton and Duran Duran all feature and what is likely to be the first of perhaps a couple of shows on these incredible songs.

War! What is it good for? Well, as it turns out, it can make for a decent film. This week the team are discussing Civil War and the soundtrack contained within. A little less familiar territory this week with innovative synth pioneers, Suicide, plus De La Soul, Sturgill Simpson and Silver Apples.

Its time for some deep-thinking, tear-jerking love, drama, family and pop music! All of those things feature in the 2023 film All Of Us Strangers. This wonderful film stars, according to Dave, “the beautiful Andrew Scott” and “the beautiful Paul Mescal”, along with Claire Foy and Jamie Bell. Its set in modern times but also goes back in time to the 80s and 90s where much of the soundtrack comes from. You’ll hear Alison Moyet, Pet Shop Boys, Blur, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Fine Young Cannibals.

This week John introduces Dave and Henry to the streaming series, The Last Of Us. A dystopian zombie-genre series set in 2023 and 2003 where mankind has fallen foul of a mutated fungus. While that doesnt sound like much fun, the soundtrack is and that’s what’s important! We share stories of music from Avril Lavinge, Dido, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Aha and Etta James. As well as a sweet song by Nick Offerman, one of the actors in the series.

This week its all glitter and boas as John, Henry and Dave go back to the 70s to talk about the music from Velvet Goldmine. Its all about Bowie (or is it??) and glam rock featuring original songs, covers and even new songs from made-up supergroups asked to make a song like you’d hear at the time. Music from T-Rex, Venus In Furs, Roxy Music, Grant Lee Buffalo, Shudder To Think and Steve Harley.

Hello Angels! This week Dave and Henry take to the world of the fab “independent women” of Charlie’s Angels. You’ll hear tracks from Destiny’s Child, Heart, Marvin Gaye, Leo Sayer, Michael Jackson and Wham as they explore the movie.

This week the Strictly Soundtracks team are all together for the first time. Join Dave, Henry and John as they discuss the wonderful series Heartstopper, a show set in 2 English schools and telling the story of a group of kids as they discover who they are. Charlie is a gay student and meets Nick, an older boy. They become friends and then something more as we learn about them and their group of friends. Music from Montaigne, Shura, Chvrches, Beabadoobee, Ezra Williams and Orla Gartlan accompnies this lovely story.

This week while Henry and John are both away, Dave hosted by himself, or so he thought. While playing awesome 80s music from Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion, Craig Brown from JOY’s The Open Table consensually gatecrashed and reminisced about growing up with amazing 80s music. This week Dave and John are joined by newsreader extraordinaire Sameer who requested a show on The Birdcage, the 1996 film starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. Some wonderful songs with a cuban influence as well as some from the film’s drag elements. You’ll hear Miami Sound Machine, La Lupe, Donna Summer and then Nathan Lane.

We’re terrible, Muriel! This week Dave has a Wedding-Off between two great wedding movies. My Best Friend’s Wedding and Muriel’s Wedding. Its not just ABBA though, you’ll hear music from the Rubettes, Ani Di Franco, Jann Arden, Blondie and then yes, some Abba, too. Everything’s better with ABBA.

This week, while Henry is off on holiday, Dave is joined by John who normally takes care of the podcasting for Strictly Soundtracks. The show is all about the recent TV limited series, Eric. This series deals with some pretty dark subject matter, which seeing as it features a large Muppet-style monster, is quite something. It also features a wonderfully diverse soundtrack which weaves through the episodes as well as in montage sequences at the end of each episode. You’ll hear songs from 10CC, Joan Armatrading, The Cure, Cerrone, Billie Holiday and Laura Branigan.

Its all red, white and blue this week as Dave and Henry explore some soundtracks from the US of A. You’ll hear music from Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, Creedence and Stevie Wonder before we take it slow with Ella Fitzgerald and everyone’s friend of Dorothy, Judy Garland.

This week Dave and Henry take us back to the 80s to talk about the classic movies from John Hughes. These are of course Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. These iconic soundtracks feature everyone from Sigue Sigue Sputnik to OMD, The Beatles, Thompson Twins, Otis Reading and Simple Minds.

We’re back! We are so happy to be back with the show and this week Dave is joined by Henry, who is hosting his first show on Joy in almost 30 years.
This week we go through some of our favourite soundtracks to showcase some incredible music from the likes of Hans Zimmer featuring Lisa Gerrard, Eurythmics, Elton John, Doris Day and Rufus Wainwright.

In acknowledgment of World Refugee Day (20th June), Dave plays music used in the 2021 animated documentary, Flee, including pieces from the score composed by Uno Helmersson and some of the pop music tracks from a-ha, Ace of Base, Roxette, and Daft Punk.

Dave is joined by special guest, Evalyn Venture – Joy Media News Broadcaster, to chat all things Hans Zimmer, starting with his earlier film score compositions from the 80s through to one of his latest pieces from the 2021 James Bond film, No Time To Die.

The late 90’s TV series Ally McBeal had some brilliant musical moments, not just from the show’s regular songstress Vonda Shepard. In this episode, Dave explores the soundtrack and discusses some of Ally’s musical manifestations.

Dave is taking a trip to swinging sixties (or at least it sounds like the sixties) in this episode, playing a selection of tunes from the soundtrack to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. That’s the first movie of the trilogy – the best in Dave’s opinion.

In 2001, Bridget Jones’s Diary – the movie, based on the novel, based on the novel – was launched out into our world along with a pretty good soundtrack. In this episode, Dave plays through the tracks, some of which are very well known and others not so much.

Known as Heath Ledger’s big break, the Australian crime comedy drama film, Two Hands, was released in 1999 with the soundtrack album being nominated for Best Original Soundtrack Recording at the 1999 ARIA awards. In this episode, Dave goes on a journey through the soundtrack, playing both some tracks from the score composed by Cezary Skubiszewski as well as other tracks used in the film from artists such as Powderfinger, Crowded House, Kate Ceberano and more.

Dave plays tracks from the 2015 British mini-series Banana – a sibling series to Cucumber, which was featured in a recent episode.
