After giving up his career to go public and tell the truth about Benghazi, Kris founded the 14th Hour Foundation to help ensure that others who’ve served and sacrificed to protect the American homeland, as well as their immediate families, get the help they need. He has dedicated himself to honoring and helping those who’ve served and sacrificed for America, after their mission or fight -- their “14th hour.” Among many other accomplishments, Kris is also author of USA Today Bestseller, The Ranger Wayas well as The Patriot's Creed. Sat, 25 Dec 2021 - 23min - 76 - Andrew DeMuth: Leaders... It's Not About YOU
The annual ILEETA Conference is a unique experience for instructors. Experts that are passionate about training and hungry for knowledge gather to learn from and collaborate with some of the best instructors in the world. Today’s guest, Andrew DeMuth, has been a member of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association for years and hasn’t missed a conference since his very first one! Will we see you at the 2022 ILEETA Conference? Register here: https://www.ileeta.org/conference-registration-instructions/ Andrew DeMuth served as the agency training officer, range master, and press information officer in addition to running the investigations division during his 25-year career. Now, he trains extensively at agencies and police academies throughout New Jersey and teaches at conferences like ILEETA’s. Adam sat down with Andrew to talk leadership training at the 2021 ILEETA Conference, where he instructed “12 Concepts of Leadership That Should Be Part of Annual Training”. The course defines the state of leadership today as a crisis and highlights the lack of universal training standard and the risks associated with failure to train and lead. Andrew provides instructors with the knowledge and skills they need to be a great leader and trainer, so they can support their team’s development. In this episode, Adam & Andrew discuss what makes a great leader and leadership program. There is a need for ongoing and continuous decision-making/leadership training for all officers, not just command staff and executive level leadership. Having these positive influencers in an agency creates a strong environment where people feel engaged, supported, and fulfilled in their work. Leaders: Leadership is a responsibility. Get to know your team, strive to develop them, and create leaders. It’s not about you. Earn your leadership and re-earn it everyday. You must care, commit, and continue to be a learner to be a great leader. Helpful links: The ILET Network Training Community hosts training groups specific to different areas of training interest, among dozens of other open groups and restricted groups that allow access to secure training content and information. Sat, 18 Dec 2021 - 21min - 74 - "Little" Joe Ferrera - Threat Pattern Recognition in Firearms Training
At the 2021 ILEETA Conference, Tactical Breakdown host Adam Kinakin is joined by “Little Joe” Ferrera, use of force, subject control & firearms trainer. Joe began his career in 1977 and has worked for Federal, County, and City Law Enforcement and Corrections. He has presented at ASLET, IALEFI, ALETC, and ILEETA and across North America. At the 2021 ILEETA Conference, Joe instructed courses on Threat Pattern Recognition and Firearms to instructors passionate about training. In this episode, Adam & Joe dive into his fascinating Threat Pattern Recognition program. Joe shares patterns discovered during research on howofficers are being assaulted with firearms. He offers insight on using these statistics to develop techniques and create training for the most likely scenario to increase overall safety. Joe stresses an understanding of human factors, data, and tactics involved in shooting incidents – and none of these are taught on the range. Joe says, “there are spontaneous, unexpected, ambush-type assaults on officers every day all around the world.” Most of these incidents are in extremely close quarters, within minutes of first contact, and result in wounds of the face, neck, and upper torso. Joe and Adam discuss the need for officers to maintain distance or cover to increase the probability of a good outcome and remove the possibility of contact shooting. They also talk about training outside of your bubble, challenges, and advances in firearms training, and force-on-force training. Joe hopes for his students to go home and drive their own learning, expand on the knowledge he provides, and think critically about how to improve and progress the law enforcement profession. More about our guest: Joe Ferrera is on staff at a local academy and currently works for a 1400 officer agency in the Detroit Michigan area in the training division. He is a staff instructor with PPCT Management Systems/Human Factors Science and a former staff instructor for Off Shoots Training Institute. “Little Joe” has also assisted with officer survival training and hands-on courses and appeared on the Law Enforcement Television Network and Policeone.com. Steve currently serves as the Chief of Police for the city of Swansea, Illinois and is a lead instructor for Calibre Press. Steve provides comprehensive training classes with Calibre Press that teach you to be “conscious of the unconscious” and use your knowledge of human behaviour to effectively obtain a confession. At the ILEETA conference, Steve trained law enforcement instructors on the topic of Interviewing & Interrogation. He uses his lived experience to provide information on I&I methodologies, human factors, and human behaviour (understanding the behaviour and the context). We discuss the negative connotation around the term “interrogation” and Steve shares a case study that includes a great example of when to move on to interrogation tactics and how to pivot when you are stuck in an investigation. Adam & Steve also dive into what it takes to be an investigator including traits, inherent or developed skills, and how to get promoted. A key takeaway: there is no magic method for interrogation that will always get you a confession. Steve’s suggestion? Learn every modality, tactic, and methodology around I&I. Get your hands on all the information that you can. Watch and learn in real situations whenever possible. Seek training & advice from the top experts in the field. Thu, 09 Dec 2021 - 24min - 71 - Todd Fletcher: Incorporating Fun & Games Into Training with a Purpose
Your Tactical Breakdown host Adam Kinakin sat down for a conversation with Todd Fletcher of Combative Firearms Training at the 2021 ILEETA Conference. Todd has over 25 years of full-time law enforcement experience and 30+ years overall experience. He is a multi-discipline instructor focusing primarily on topics around Firearms and Use-of-Force. He incorporates his law enforcement experience with his experience as an instructor and competitive shooter so he can effectively train new shooters to understand and develop fundamental firearms skills. He helps intermediate shooters to take those skills to the next level by combining the fundamentals with real life training scenarios. Finally, Todd teaches intermediate, advanced, and expert shooters how to prevail in today's world using the lessons learned from real life shooting scenarios. In this episode, Adam & Todd talk about “It’s All Fun and Games”, Todd’s ILEETA class designed to maximize engagement and decrease stagnancy. They discuss Todd’s principles of training, the purpose of training, the correct use of gamification, and changing the standard of training. Todd also dives into qualification testing, differential training, the importance of understanding the ‘why’ (as an instructor and a student), instructor development, and creating a training culture that allows students to fail safely. Todd’s Training Principles: Todd believes in “leadership by example” and uses this approach while teaching classes. He believes students learn best following a philosophy of “hear— see — do”. This building block approach to training allows students to hear what they are going to do, then see what they are going to do, then execute what was explained and demonstrated. Todd believes skill development (the “how’s”), is only one of the overall goals of firearms training. A shooter needs to understand how to self-diagnose marksmanship and tactical errors (the “why’s”) to develop a true proficiency and expertise in firearms. Understanding the “why’s” allows shooters to self-correct mistakes leading to a rapid improvement of their knowledge, skills, and abilities. More about our guest: At Combative Firearms Training, Todd provides Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Handgun, Carbine & Shotgun training. He is certified to train in Integrated Use of Force, Force-on-Force, Empty Hand Control Tactics, Collapsible Baton, Pepper Spray and Use of Force (legal issues). Todd was a staff instructor for IALEFI (International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors) Master Instructor Development Program. Todd is also a charter member of the National Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor Association (NLEFIA). He has provided training at various regional, national, and international conferences for law enforcement, private security, and military personnel including numerous ILEETA Conferences and IALEFI conferences. He an Expert Contributor for Police1 and is a regular columnist for Police & Security News and American Police Beat magazines. He has trained and provided consultation services for law enforcement agencies, contract security, military personnel, and armed citizens from coast to coast. He has also testified as an expert witness in cases involving police training and use of force. Todd regularly puts into practice the same skills and techniques he teaches by testing them on the competitive shooting stage. He competes several times each month in club level IDPA and USPSA matches frequently finishing as one of the top shooters for the match regardless of division or classification. Wed, 24 Nov 2021 - 22min - 67 - Matt Little: Innovation in Firearms Training
Matt Little is a US Army Special Forces combat veteran and a retired Chicago Police Department SWAT leader. He is a lifelong martial artist and a USPSA & IDPA Master Class Shooter. Matt’s passion for innovating his own training experience led him to open Greybeard Actual, where he uses his decades of operational, competitive, and instructional experience to provide advanced training in firearms, tactics, and combatives. TBP host Adam Kinakin had the opportunity to sit down with Matt Little at the 2021 ILEETA conference. In this episode, Matt & Adam discuss the diverse background that has shaped Matt’s coaching style, his passion for training, do’s and don’t of firearms training, and how he has used competition as a tool. They also dive into IPSC training, the Stacatto 2011 pistol platform, key takeaways from Matt’s instruction, and how to chart a path to excellence in your shooting. With his high-level military background, Matt has always had accessible firearms training. Despite this, he still had the mindset to seek out more and diverse training to truly become an expert. To reach your full potential as a shooter, you need to seek out training outside of your wheelhouse and understand the science of how to become an expert. Matt put it perfectly when he said “number of rounds fired is no guarantee of skill” – more is not always better. Put simply, the training Matt offers combines his years of experience, mistakes, and best practices to bring you a shortcut to becoming an expert shooter. Matt offers you the tools you need from the get-go. His sole goal is to enable his students to master their craft quickly and efficiently. He approaches firearms training with a coach-to-athlete mentality and feels you should train shooting like you would any other sport – you need to understand the methodology that you are an athlete, doing an athletic drill and not going through a scenario. Is your ego getting in the way of your training? To become one of the best, you need to put yourself up against the best. Don’t avoid competing with someone better than you just because they will beat you. Match yourself with top competitors and learn from them. One of our favorites from Matt Little: “You are either improving or degrading – there is no ‘I’ve arrived’”. Tue, 31 Dec 2019 - 12min - 20 - SPECIAL EPISODE: Making Great Action Movies with Christian Gudegast
Adam had the opportunity to sit down with the writer and director of Den of Thieves, Christian Gudegast. They talk gunfights, tactics, special effects and everything in between. Enjoy this special episode as we take a dive into how movies are made. EPISODE PAGE: https://thebreakdown.ca/020 Christian was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the UCLA Film School in 1992, top of his class. Sat, 26 Oct 2019 - 1h 14min - 12 - PTSD Recovery and Flipping Tires with Terrance Kosikar
What is the beginning of Post Traumatic Stress? Where does it start? For Terrance, it was at 5 years old when his father burned down his home with his family inside. Fast forward to 2010, he's a Fire Rescue Paramedic working at the Vancouver Winter Olympics and was called to respond to a fatal accident with a luge athlete on opening day. This episode is all about his story, where he came from, what led him into becoming a First Responder, his battle with PTSD and suicide, and his amazing and inspiring story of recovery and healing. EPISODE PAGE: https://thebreakdown.ca/012 Terrance Kosikar is a former Fireman/Paramedic for Whistler Fire Rescue in British Columbia. He is also a motivational speaker, and traveling the world to bring more education, knowledge and a better understanding around Post Traumatic Stress and most importantly shares the natural tools we can all use to help manage our mental, emotional, behavioral health challenges. He was a First Responder to a fatal accident during an event on the opening day of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Although well trained in a myriad of life-saving techniques, he was not prepared to deal with the emotional impact sustained when those techniques were not enough. As a result of the fatality, Terrance developed PTSD that launched him into a very costly downward spiral. During several years of severe depression, attempted suicide, and substance abuse, he lost his family, career, and nearly his life. Pushed to his breaking point, Terrance found salvation within. Escaping to the backcountry, he had found peace and purpose in mother nature’s beauty and simplicity. He now runs a Wilderness Therapy Program (Camp My Way) for combat veterans, first responders and their families who have been affected by Post Traumatic Stress ( PTSD/OSI). This is the first episode of the podcast and I couldn't be more honored to be able to deliver this platform to the brave Men and Women who CHOOSE to put themselves on the line to protect their friends, their families, their communities, and their country. This podcast is a way to bring together Subject Matter Experts, Trainers, Instructors, and Special Guests to share their knowledge and experience to help YOU succeed, both at work and at home. We will be bringing you interviews from the world's best Law Enforcement Trainers, Military Experts, First Responders, and Security Professionals. Every once in a while, we will breakdown our favorite equipment, books, or courses and hopefully get you some deals along the way. Thank you so much for your love and support as we build out this platform and start rolling out this podcast. Stay Safe.
