Robert Chadwick is the Former Head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Tactical Training Program. Among many other responsibilities, Robert was also the FBI’s National Academy Program Coordinator. Dr. Mike “Doc” Simpson, the host of the “Mind of the Warrior” podcast, joins Adam to discuss multiple topics including tactical medicine, training standards, mental and physical health, resiliency, and more.  LISTEN TO PAST EPISODE(S):  Episode 10  /  Episode 11 Mike began his career in the Rangers, ultimately being promoted to Sergeant and serving as an anti-tank section leader. In 1988, Mike finished his initial enlistment and was honorably discharged. For the next three years, Mike worked as a corrections officer and served in the Florida Army National Guard as part of the 3rd Battalion 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne). During Desert Storm, Mike attended Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS), and the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC) graduating as a Special Forces Engineer. Mike was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Bragg North Carolina, and served there until 2002, first as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant, and later as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant, after completing medical training at Fort Sam Houston Texas. He deployed to multiple countries in Central and South America, and is a fluent Spanish speaker. In 2002, Mike left Special Forces to attend medical school. After graduating with his Medical Doctorate, Mike trained in Emergency Medicine, and still maintains a medical practice as a board-certified EM physician in the state of Texas. As an Army physician, Mike was assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), and deployed multiple times in direct support of the Global War on Terror (GWOT). During that time period, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with V Device, as well as the Combat Medical Badge, for performing his duties as an Emergency Medicine Physician under enemy fire. Mike is a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, currently holding the rank of purple belt, and works as a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight physician. As one of the foremost experts in both tactical trauma medicine and combat sports medicine, Mike is highly sought after as a lecturer and instructor, working extensively with MMA fighters, law enforcement, and military organizations providing medical care and training. Steve Nash is a retired Lieutenant-Colonel and Infantry-Airborne-Ranger with almost 25 years of military experience serving Canada at home and abroad. Having served most of his military career in operational units, he has also served as an instructor/mentor for officers at the Canadian Land Forces Command and Staff College in Kingston. In addition to commanding at the platoon level (40 people) and company level (150 people) for over 10 years; he also served as a staff officer for both operations (600 people) and personnel administration (4500 people). With experience in airborne, airmobile, and specialist/light infantry units in the jungle, mountain, desert, arctic, urban, and CBRNE environments, he is a Distinguished Honor Graduate of US Army Ranger School. Steve was also selected to serve in Canada’s Special Operations community where he completed his military service as Operations Officer, Deputy Commanding Officer, and then Commanding Officer within Canada’s two strategic ‘special mission’ units. As a student of leadership and human dynamic, Steve has worked with a wide variety of organizations (RCMP, Tier 1 SOF, FBI Academy Association, Ontario Tactical Advisory Body, Iron Stride Triathlon Training, Corrections Ontario, Probation Officers Association of Ontario, Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Ontario Police Association, Canadian Forces College, 2 CF Flight Training School, St Lawrence College, Queen’s University, Halton Regional Police, Kingston Police, and Regina Police SWAT Roundup) through presentations and workshops to assist in considering best practices, building best teams with best leaders and achieving best results. Dan has worked as a law enforcement professional in the state of Arizona for over twenty-four years. Dan began his career as an officer in 1996 and in 1998 was selected as a Field Training Officer where he served until 2000.  After two years as a detective, Dan returned to training and mentoring new employees and remained there until 2006 when he was promoted to Sergeant and began his leadership role supervising officers in the field.  A year later, Dan was selected to the Field Training Unit once more, this time, inheriting the team as its supervisor.  For seven years Dan led this critical and active team. As part of his role as the FTO Sergeant, Dan trained approximately 20 newly promoted supervisors.  Dan’s first interest in teaching was as a Defensive Tactics Instructor.  Dan earned his certification in 2000.  Since that time, Dan has had the opportunity to teach countless hours within the field.  Dan has taught use of force related topics at ALEA, CGCC Reserve Academy, and internally at the Chandler Police Department.  Dan has also developed outlines and taught classes for basic level use of force courses all the way up to DT Instructor School.  For nearly five years Dan acted as his department's lead Use of Force Instructor and was responsible for teaching, facilitating, and preparing for classes as well as developing his DT staff.   Dan is currently a certified Subject Matter Expert in General Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Ground Survival Instructor, Field Training Officer, Adult Learning Instructor, Ethics and Leadership Instructor. Dan also has extensive training through institutions such as Arizona Police Officers Standards and Training, National Institute of Ethics, Jack Enter’s Proactive Leadership Strategies, Franklin/Covey Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, and Franklin/Covey The Nobility of Policing. Dan works as a consultant with law enforcement agencies to help develop Standardized Evaluations for FTO programs, continuous and advanced training for Field Training Officers, liability and case law updates as well as redeveloping the structure of the program to include more commonly known adult learning techniques. During his time as an FTO and an FTO Sergeant, he has played a role in training over 250 new officers. Dan is currently the Executive Director for the National Association of Field Training Officers. Prior to that appointment, Dan served six years as an elected executive board member of NAFTO as well as eight years as Vice President of the Arizona Chapter. At the 2021 ILEETA Conference, Tactical Breakdown host Adam Kinakin is joined by “Little Joe” Ferrera, use of force, subject control & firearms trainer. Joe began his career in 1977 and has worked for Federal, County, and City Law Enforcement and Corrections. He has presented at ASLET, IALEFI, ALETC, and ILEETA and across North America. At the 2021 ILEETA Conference, Joe instructed courses on Threat Pattern Recognition and Firearms to instructors passionate about training.  In this episode, Adam & Joe dive into his fascinating Threat Pattern Recognition program. Joe shares patterns discovered during research on howofficers are being assaulted with firearms. He offers insight on using these statistics to develop techniques and create training for the most likely scenario to increase overall safety. Joe stresses an understanding of human factors, data, and tactics involved in shooting incidents – and none of these are taught on the range.  Joe says, “there are spontaneous, unexpected, ambush-type assaults on officers every day all around the world.” Most of these incidents are in extremely close quarters, within minutes of first contact, and result in wounds of the face, neck, and upper torso. Joe and Adam discuss the need for officers to maintain distance or cover to increase the probability of a good outcome and remove the possibility of contact shooting. Marty Adcock is a Regional Manager at ALERRT - the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Center at Texas State University. Here’s a sobering reality - the law enforcement world sees more death by suicide than officers killed in the line of duty.  On the latest episode of the Tactical Breakdown, Blue H.E.L.P. co-founder Steve Hough discusses mental health, officer suicide, his own healing journey, and the mission of Blue H.E.L.P at the 2021 ILEETA Conference.  In December 2011, while working with a violent fugitive task force, Steve was shot three times, twice in the left leg and once in the face. So began his journey of healing, leading him to eventually co-found Blue H.E.L.P. and assist others in the battle with critical incident stress management.  Blue H.E.L.P. brings mental health awareness to the forefront by collecting data around law enforcement and corrections suicides. Doug Pflug turned 54 a few weeks ago and wants everyone to know that he's doing okay. His body might be 54 but his passion and mind is still in its early 20's. This episode has some inspirational storytelling from Doug, including the discouragement one teacher gave him, and he advice his father taught him when he was in grade 7 that shaped who he is today. Doug  also recounted his last days in grade 12 when he last spoke to a classmate who would perish in the 1985 Air India bombing. It was that incident that Doug knew he would work in policing. In the later years, he showed his value in training athletes like Todd Bertuzzi and Jeff O'Neill over the course of a summer. Today he is the strength and conditioning coach of the Guelph Gryphons football team. Doug spent 18 years working with the Guelph Storm and spent some time working with the University of West Virginia Hockey team.  You will hear Doug's story and how an empathetic soul like Doug copes with some of the harder days when policing. Two years as a uniformed patrol officer in a very busy Southside district. Four years as a member of the Elite Special Operations Unit. This unit traveled citywide concentrating on felony and gun arrests. Six years with the Chicago P.D. S.W.A.T. Team with several years as a sniper. McCarthy was meritoriously promoted to Gang Crime Specialist (Gang Investigator) in 1981. As a Gang Investigator, McCarthy concentrated on gang related shootings and murders. For 5 years McCarthy worked undercover buying guns and drugs from hardcore street gang members. During this 5 year period McCarthys conviction rate was an astounding 99%. He put over 300 active gang members in prison while working this undercover assignment. McCarthy was assigned as a Special Investigator with the FBI for 11 years and has participated in major investigations throughout the United States and abroad. He spent 6 years on the Federal Asian Gang and Organized Crime Task Force, 2 years on the International Criminal Enterprise Drug Task Force and 3 years assigned to the FBIs Violent Crime/ Gang Joint Task Force. Lee Patterson is a Staff Sargent within Vancouver Police assigned to the Real Time Intelligence Centre Operations. He has experience of policing in two countries and across 4 cities. In this episode we spoke to Lee about his experience working in England, where up until 1992, police officers rarely carried a firearm. He also spoke to us about the 2011 riots after Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final; he told us where he was and where it went wrong that night.  Lee has specialized within the fields of public order and anti-terrorist and crime scene search. Lee has a Masters Degree in Disaster Emergency Management undertaken at Royal Roads University and considers himself as an informed and experienced practitioner within the emergency management field. Operation Save-A-Casing is a partnership with law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal level and the community to combat firearm-related crime.  The campaign works by submitting two firearm casings to a Wichita Police Department Officer after a gun theft has occurred. These casings are then submitted into National Integrated Ballistic Information Network known as NIBIN. NIBIN is a national database containing digital images of spent bullets and cartridge casings that were found at crime scenes or test-fired from confiscated firearms. This database can be searched for possible matches and if a "hit" occurs, the NIBIN lab sends that information to WPD investigators. What is the beginning of Post Traumatic Stress? Where does it start? For Terrance, it was at 5 years old when his father burned down his home with his family inside. He is also a motivational speaker, and traveling the world to bring more education, knowledge and a better understanding around Post Traumatic Stress and most importantly shares the natural tools we can all use to help manage our mental, emotional, behavioral health challenges. He was a First Responder to a fatal accident during an event on the opening day of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Although well trained in a myriad of life-saving techniques, he was not prepared to deal with the emotional impact sustained when those techniques were not enough. As a result of the fatality, Terrance developed PTSD that launched him into a very costly downward spiral. During several years of severe depression, attempted suicide, and substance abuse, he lost his family, career, and nearly his life. Pushed to his breaking point, Terrance found salvation within. Escaping to the backcountry, he had found peace and purpose in mother nature’s beauty and simplicity.
