We are just starting to come out of one of the strangest times that any of us will possibly ever face with the Covid 19 pandemic. Ged Brockie of GMI talks with up and coming guitar maestro Honza Kourimsky about being a musician in these lock down days.
Honza Kourimsky in action leading one of his many bands
Most people agree that it is a hard life being a musician. Doing something you love for at times not a lot of money. Add on to that the fact that music scenes are witnessing a contraction in places to play live music and a general public's view in many cases that somehow "music should be free" makes it even tougher; and then we added Covid-19 to the pot!!!
Honza Kourimsky is an exciting and in demand young guitarist who has been active in creating several bands and opportunities for musicians in his currently adopted land of residence Scotland. Ged Brockie talks with Honza about the opportunities he's created and asks how the lock down has affected his work and the work of those around them in terms of the bands and live performance opportunities.

Have you ever considered or even thought about community guitar groups? In this podcast, Chris Dixon explains his journey to creating more than just a one on one teaching practice.
Chris in action with a group of local guitar players
Ever felt that one to one tuition, whilst the best way to teach guitar, or indeed any instrument is a bit...well, sort of isolated? Would it not be great to actually take this and make it into something that feels and is a bit bigger with regards the other teachers and artistic people in your community?
Chris Dixon from East Lothian in Scotland has done just that. Chris has taken his one to one guitar teaching practice and developed it into a community group and by reaching out to other players and those involved with the arts has created something that is much more connected.
Chris also talks about his jet setting early years, how he got into guitar in the first place and how he views guitar tuition and the relevance of community action in music!

Ged Brockie Of GMI Discusses The Incredible Piece Of Guitar Software That No Guitarist Should Be Without Called "Neck Diagrams" With It's Creator Justin Dolezy.
The three packages available from Neck Diagrams
We've all done it. Grabbed and scribbled down a bunch of lines and created our own chord boxes to then remember the latest and best chord, scale or arpeggio. Perhaps it was a bunch of chords for a song. You would think that there would be a plethora of quality software out there that could help you create beautiful images that you could easily share...but you'd be wrong.
Justin Dolezy created the company Neck Diagrams over ten years ago and in that time, his software is the "go too" piece of digital kit that guitarists use to create stunning fret board images.
Hot on the heels of our review of the latest incarnation of the software ND2, Ged Brockie discusses all things music, guitar and delves (lightly) into the world of programming. Justin discusses just what it takes to get a program like this up, running and out there to the guitar public at large.

Jamie in action with the Theorbo. Note, the instruments goes higher than the top of the image!
Once the instrument of choice for those with plucked string leaning, the Lute is now a distant second to the guitar in terms of popularity. This is unfortunate as it's beautiful sound and aesthetic should mean that it gets a lot more attention than it does.
Jamie Akers has worked with just about every major orchestra in the UK, recorded for film, taught across Europe and performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the UK and beyond.
Ged Brockie delves into, or at least talks about medieval instruments and later examples of stringed instrument history with Jamie as well as questioning him about the an instrument that he owns which you can see in the above image which is called the Theorbo.

One thing that non-musicians should understand is that the world is full of great musicians, however, very few can actually claim to make a living from predominantly playing music. This podcast interview is with one such musician Tom Lippincott.
Tom is an incredibly accomplished musician who also teaches guitar. Just take a look at one of his many Youtube video lessons (link below) and you'll immediately be struck by his knowledge and ability to clearly communicate his message.
As the headline notes, this interview didn't get much past Tom's eight string guitar but we are hopeful that we can talk with Tom again in the near future as there is a lot more to discuss!

Musical U - Helping To Redress The Balance In Musical Aural Training
One of the great benefits of the Internet in these days of constricting budgets in music education establishments and poor musical provision within schools is the advent of courses online. None more so than the provision offered by online company Musical-U.com.

For many musicians, aural training is something that gets forgotten about. This is a real tragedy as being able to hear, identify and externalise the musical ideas heard away from the instrument is the life blood of creativity that all musicians need.
Musical-U CEO Christopher Sutton discusses the ideas and the eventual realisation of Musical-U and how it is changing the way people perceive and ultimately hear and relate to music for thousands across the world.

A Little About Jason
Here is a little about Jason from his own website and in his own words.
Hi! My name is Justin Comstock. I am the owner of Comstock Guitar Studio and the creator of the FretDeck. I have been playing the guitar since I was 11 years old. I started teaching the guitar during high school and have over 14 years of experience in teaching guitar. During high school I took music theory AP and continued learning more after graduating. Music has always been my passion and I enjoy helping others learn. I enjoy hearing my students write their own music and seeing what they can accomplish on the guitar.
I would like to tell you why I created this fantastic product for guitar players.
One evening while I was watching TV, I tuned into a Stevie Ray Vaughn concert that I have seen many times prior. As I watched this amazing guitarist play across the fretboard, I realized that he was playing pentatonic scales on the entire guitar. I thought if only other guitar players could understand the fretboard like Stevie Ray Vaughn. My goal is to help guitar players master the entire fret board in every single key so they feel more comfortable playing the guitar.
So, I created the FretDeck!
You can find out more about FretDeck and purchasing it by clicking FretDeck.
On Justins blog he has a series of great articles for guitarists.

More About JamStack
JamStack Explained
The JamStack is the world's first attachable guitar amplifier and the first to integrate seamlessly with a smart phone for incredible effects, shockingly good tone, and total portability.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xJZAC7F6PM
Electric guitars can be a pain to set up. All the required equipment like cables, pedals, power outlets and amplifiers take up space and limit where and when you can play. The JamStack solves that problem, letting guitarists and bassists play wherever, whenever they choose.
Easy Set-up: JamStack’s lightweight, portable amplifier connects to the base of an electric guitar (or electric bass) in seconds. Weighing under 2lbs. (900 grams), the amp fits on the strap button at the bottom of most guitars using a spring load system and soft mount to protect from scratches. Adjust the smartphone mount and connect two short cords to the phone and guitar’s output and you are ready to jam!
How Long Does A Charge Last For?
The JamStack runs 8-hours on a single charge and works with iOS, Windows, Android, and iPhone Touch. Its 10-watt speaker is designed to sound great at high AND low volume. It’s not distorted like a mini-amp, so guitarists can sound as good practicing in the middle of the night at low volume as they would jamming alongside other instruments on the street. Since it is so small and light, the JamStack fits in a guitar case making it perfect for road trips, parties and jamming in the park.
Using Effects
Layer Effects: Pair the JamStack with apps like AmpliTube and AmpKit to add layered effects like drum beats without wasting time on levels. Back tracks won’t drop out like regular amps! And since the phone is right on the guitar body, guitarists can set up loops on the fly, perform sequined samples, or record and share music effortlessly. JamStack helps recreate virtually any guitar sound without the need for a lot of computer equipment.
It’s great for new guitar players too! Adjust the phone to can hear the lesson and follow along on the screen. It even works as a great tuner! Plus, JamStack can be paired with Bluetooth to double as an ultra- premium Bluetooth speaker for sharing tunes wirelessly.

How Does Someone Become A Professional Guitarist?
So if you are starting out, or perhaps you've been playing for some time and you want to make the jump to full time becoming a professional guitarist full time, how do you go about this? What does it entail? More importantly, what is the probable reality compared to the dreams that you have? In this episode, you will hear from guitarist Ged Brockie who has been plying his trade as a professional musician for over thirty years. Pulling from his own experience you'll learn just what it takes to earn your living as a musician. A highly personal podcast episode, Ged talks about his own beginnings as a musician and how this initial dream developed into the reality of actually making a living.
This podcast talks about the realities of making a living as a musician and the fact that you don't always get everything on your own terms. Also discussed is the how you need a basket of skills and you also need to be adaptable to situations. Talent, that often used word also is considered. What really is talent and how do other people view and perceive it?
Note From Ged Brockie
I have included a download of my CV which includes the vast majority of the work that I have carried out. It does not list my ongoing home tuition and gigs I perform at in my hometown and further afield. I have included it so you can see the diversity needed to earn a living as a musician. Or at least, this is how I have found it.

Learning Guitar Sight Reading On Guitar
Learning to read traditional music notation on the guitar is usually not the first thing that guitarists consider unless they come from a classical guitar background. Due to the fact that guitar players get scales, chords, arpeggios and ultimately songs together quickly, by the time that they get round to thinking about getting their reading together it's often too late; or so they think. Getting used to TAB (tablature) means they don't see the point in learning to read.
This podcast which is episode 1 puts the case for guitar players of all ages and styles to reconsider and challenge their thoughts on learning to read music.
