The Legacy of Dr. Haunani-Kay Trask: A Tribute and Reflection Aloha mai kakou, and mahalo for joining us today on the Moana Nui podcast. Today, we are in for a treat as we get to talk story with two Manawahine who were students of Dr. Trask. The late Haunani-Kay Trask, for those who may not know who she is, was a fierce advocate for the Self-Determination of Kanaka Maoli. She was a poet and educator, was part of the working group for the crafting of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, a film director, and held many hats in the act of resistance against colonial constructs. Upon her departure to the realm of the ancestors, she is remembered by those who love her and by those who hold onto her words, her ideas, and her legacy. Talking story with us today is Dr. Noelani Goodyear-Ka’ōpua and Dr. Erin Kahunawai Wright. Raised on the lands of O'ahu, Noelani Goodyear Ka'opua is a Kanaka Maoli who works as a professor of Hawaiian and Indigenous politics at the University of Hawaiʻi Manoa. Erin Kahunawai Wright is Kanaka 'O'iwi Hawaiʻi, or Native Hawaiian, and a fifth-generation Kama'āina of Kaluaopulena Kalihi O'ahu. Both share a deep connection to Dr. Trask and continue her work in various capacities. In this episode, we delve into the life and legacy of Dr. Haunani-Kay Trask, discussing her impact on Hawaiian movements, Indigenous education, and the power of her teachings. We also explore the ways in which her students, Dr. Goodyear-Ka’ōpua and Dr. Wright, have carried forward her vision and teachings in their own careers and lives. Lā Kū‘oko‘a (Hawaiian Independence Day) overview of the importance and recognition in which Hawai'i was acknowledged as a Sovereign Nation by the British and France in 1843. "Paradise" is often imagined through ideologies that can be noted as "other-wordly" in a religious sense to a place that is filled with "magical" innuendos. Often malihini and visitors from across the world use such terms as "paradise" to describe Hawai'i as a place of wonder that is inviting and is not filled with capitalistic endeavors from outside developers. While Kānaka Maoli on and off island may have a different perception about paradise, we unpack these ideologies from different perspectives of Kānaka and generational locals who understand Hawai'i as home (and maybe paradise). Itʻs been less than 2 months since fires destroyed the historical town of Lahaina. On Aug 8, thousands of Maui residents lost their homes and everything they own. Many are living out of cars or hopping from temporary hotel rooms - if theyʻre fortunate enough to have either of those at all. Suicide rates are up - along with disaster tourism where many tourists are more concerned about taking pictures of the aftermath than helping those in need. Organizations such as Red Cross and FEMA continue to fall short in their efforts to deploy aid to Lahaina. And yet, plans to reopen Lahaina to tourism on Sunday Oct 8 reinforces the viewpoint that those in power care about money over people, no matter the cost. Mog is a world traveler having lived in Australia, Egypt, Africa, Russian when USSR broke down, Japan when the Kobe earthquake hit. She has moved around the US too living in California, Wisconsin, Illinois and then calling Hawaii home. She currently resides in the Los Angeles area. Christian is an academic, social media guru, event producer, filmmaker and talent manager who has been active in the Asian American community across the U.S. for 17 years. He currently chairs the board of the DC Shorts International Film Festival and is President/Executive Director of the DC Asian Pacific Film Festival. He has produced and directed many award-winning shorts, music videos, commercials, and public service announcements. Christian also loves producing events and helped numerous organizations with a variety of events, including the Korean Festival of Maryland from 2016-2019, NC Korean Festival from 2019-2020, KORUS Festival of VA from 2006-2015 and Korean Center, Inc. of San Francisco with their successful 1st Annual Bay Area Chuseok Festival this past October. Christian was an adjunct faculty for the Asian American Studies program at University of Maryland where he taught ethnic studies in film, video and social media.
