Mailinn Hamre began drinking at the age of 13, and by the time she turned 18, things took a dramatic turn as it became the legal age to purchase beer in Norway. Initially, she started drinking to fit in with her friends, and the consequences of her actions didn't become apparent until some time had passed. She found herself becoming dependent on the escape that alcohol provided. As the years went by, her situation worsened, and she ended up consuming up to 17 litres of beer or 4 litres of vodka per day. She mentioned feeling that her body was deteriorating, and her doctor confirmed this grim reality by simply wishing her well and stating that there was no need for another appointment the following year, as her prognosis was bleak. The thought of a life without alcohol was unimaginable for her. After enduring many months of illness, Mailinn was placed into a coma that lasted for three months. In this episode, Brooke shares her rocky journey with addiction which began in her teenage years following the loss of her father. Raised in a close-knit family, she first turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism during this painful time. As she grew older, her drinking habit escalated. Despite facing further life challenges, including a battle with cancer, Brooke continued drinking, often to cope with both physical and emotional pain. After hitting rock bottom, Brooke courageously chose to ask for help and entered a rehab program. Growing up in Omaha, Nebraska, Todd started drinking alcohol in high school and his consumption escalated throughout college and law school as he used alcohol to cope with stress. Todd would go on the graduate law school and become an attorney and from the outside, it appeared that Todd had cracked the code of life. Todd was a busy father, husband and attorney but his drinking habits from college never left. For years Todd would go back and forth with attempted moderation and was able to take several 90-day breaks from alcohol and this confirmed what he thought at the time if I can go 90 days without alcohol could I have a problem? After the back and forth Todd was in his car one day and was honest with himself the only option left was the quit. 4+ years into the journey Todd shares that every area of his life has improved.
