SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT - Sober Living, Sobriety, Addiction Recovery, Emotional Sobriety, Alcohol Free
Are you stuck in the rut of addiction looking for some hope for change? Or are you already in recovery but struggling with your emotional sobriety & feeling anxious about whether or not you’re doing this life thing right? Are you a self-proclaimed perfectionist constantly worried about what others think of you? Do you feel childhood and family patterns repeating themselves in your marriage or relationships? Did the pink cloud fade a long time ago only to be replaced with the restlessness, irritability, and discontent of those familiar drunken days? Maybe you’re a high achiever and on the outside, you have everything you need and even some of the things you want - but you’re still feeling dissatisfied. People see success when they look at you but all you see when you look in the mirror is a person you don’t even recognize - just like those 3am accidental glimpses in the mirror when you were crying in the bathroom. Desperate for a solution & crying out to a God you weren’t sure you even believed in. OH desperation - what a gift that was! In this podcast you’re gonna hear stories of hope for sober living. Stories with solutions to emotional health, relationships, and that critical inner voice as well as transparent and authentic conversations about navigating mental health, faith, and relationships in recovery. My name’s Felicia and I’m a 12-stepper turned therapist. I’m married and I have two littles under 5. I grew up in church but I didn’t find Jesus or understand grace until I found the rooms of AA in 2011. I love Jesus but have had my fair share of struggling with church culture and religion. I know what it’s like to be stuck in a restless, irritable, and discontent rut (drunk & sober). This next season I’m going to be shifting the podcast focus to stories of hope for sober living. This change comes after a year of podcasting and recognizing more than ever the power of storytelling and my hope to reach a larger audience of listeners seeking a solution to their addiction in addition to solutions for living sober. There will still at times be a focus on reaching parents in recovery since this is such a huge part of my recovery, but not all my guests who will be sharing their experience, strength, and hope, will be parents. I’m so glad you’re here! Grab your keys and let’s go for a drive… there’s no judgment (or breathalyzer) at this Sobriety Checkpoint. - 61 - 58 | Is This the End for Sobriety Checkpoint? Hear Why Felicia's Farewell Is Just the Start of Something Bigger!
In this farewell-for-now episode of Sobriety Checkpoint, I reflect on the journey of hosting this podcast and how it has been a vessel of growth and learning in both my personal and professional life. As a sober mom and therapist who has navigated the complexities of mental health, spirituality, and sobriety, I've been blessed to share insights and stories that hopefully inspire and resonate with others living a sober lifestyle. Today, I'll share a deeply personal meditation from "Jesus Calling" that emphasizes the beauty of imperfection and the importance of not being overly harsh with oneself. This message is particularly poignant as it mirrors my own experiences of overcoming perfectionism in sobriety and the abundant growth that follows when we embrace progress over perfection. As I pause this podcast to focus on expanding my therapeutic practice, remember that Sobriety Checkpoint's past episodes will remain available for guidance and inspiration. Whether you are a sober dad, engaging in tough relationship communication, or a parent striving for fun in sobriety without resentment, there's something here for you. I cherish every story shared and lesson learned with you all, and I hold onto faith that this isn't the end but a new beginning. Revisit the insights on communication, faith, and parenting whenever you need a reminder of your strength in sobriety. Thank you for allowing me into your lives; let's keep in touch through social media and continue supporting each other in our journeys. GREGG CHAMPION Gregg Champion, a TEDx speaker and former branding expert, has worked with top consumer brands (Gap, Mattel, Doritos, Pokemon, NIKE), major television networks (NBC, FOX, and Fox Sports), and professional sports teams during the first 15 years of his career. He now focuses his energy on selective start-up ventures as an entrepreneur, advisor, educator, and start-up coach. Gregg has helped, supported, and career coached over a 100 Millennials and Gen Z’s helping them successfully land their first job or internship in the "real world." Through his vast experiences working with Fortune 500 brands, running his own companies, and fostering relationships with young people at colleges and universities across the nation, he has developed a purpose driven playbook on how to land, keep, and thrive at your dream job. In June 2015, Gregg was named Mentor in Residence at USC's Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurship after serving as a co-teacher for a 400-level undergraduate course on Venture Management within the Marshall School of Business. Sensing a shift in the economy and the media industry, Gregg’s intuition told him he needed to pivot. He came up with a mantra that he said to his wife and the universe every day… “I want to get paid for being me.” What came of that daily prayer, and the patience of his loving wife… was the opportunity to go into drug treatment facilities, sober living centers, and intensive outpatient programs and “facilitate” / “teach” / “coach” others in his version of recovery. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. THIS IS PART 2 OF AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. SARAH MICHAUD, PSYD & AUTHOR OF “CO-CRAZY” Today I had the pleasure of chatting with Dr. Sarah Michaud. Dr. Michaud is a clinical psychologist who has worked in the addiction field for 30 years. She recently published a book called, “Co-Crazy: One Psychologist's Recovery from Codependency and Addiction - A Memoir and Manual for Freedom.” She has been sober for almost 40 years and brings her humor, directness, compassion and insight to support folks in recovery. She recently launched a YouTube channel called, “Leaving Crazytown,” with her sober attorney buddy, Finn. They discuss all things codependency and addiction while having lots of laughs. I highly recommend her book, it’s completely a handbook for codependency, it’s a great book to jump around. The book is full of pithy, quote-worthy, statements. It’s definitely something that I plan on revisiting. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Grab your keys and let’s go for a drive... Today’s episode is a lesson from a story in the Bible - Luke 10: 38-42 which says: At the Home of Martha and Mary 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” I was struck when reading this story at how I can be so busy EVEN in the presence of my higher power - that I can still miss connecting IN. Today’s episode is all about your desire to be seen, affirmed, acknowledged. If you’re anything like me, you are guilty of giving the silent treatment or even throwing a fit, raising your voice or using a rude voice with the people you love the most. You’ve been critical of yourself and of other people and maybe you even feel like you don’t matter. This episode is for you, I’ve been there with you and I hope you listen and practice these two tips to help relieve some of the pain of not getting this need met or at least thinking it’s not being met. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Tue, 29 Aug 2023 - 22min - 24 - 22 | Has being blacked out drunk become a normal part of life? This was part of Ryan Lundy’s story until he picked up the 30 pound phone to ask for help. He’s a Military Veteran & Police Officer
Ryan Lundy is 43, married, and a father of two - an 18 y/o daughter and 15 y/o son. He was a 16 year Infantry veteran of Iraq and Bosnia. A non combat injury cut his career short. He’s been a full time police officer for 16 years for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. In that time he’s battled criminals, injuries and the loss of 4 officers he’s worked with as well as his own demons in the form of PTSD and depression. He self medicated with alcohol for several years to avoid dealing with the problem or admitting he had one. It completely devoured him until one day he picked up the phone and asked for help. There’s a whole story about how that came to happen that he will share. At the time of this recording, he has been sober for 2 years, 6 months and 20 days. Ryan is a a certified addiction peer recovery coach - you can reach him by email at 30427@indy.gov or send a DM on IG: @ryan_lundy1 **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Thu, 17 Aug 2023 - 17min - 22 - 20 | Have you ever felt like ending your life was your only option? You’re not alone - The Power of Storytelling with UK Author, Stewart Lee
Today I have Stewart Lee, an author from the UK, here on the show. I’m excited for you all to hear his story. I’ve been to so many 12-step meetings, as a therapist - I’ve heard so many life stories. Listening to Stewart today was a bit different than anything I’ve experienced before. I think the power of story-telling really hit me for the first time which was quite a surprise since so much of my life is spent listening to people tell their story. I’m excited to showcase storytelling on this podcast. I’ve had my good friend J.P. Cifelli tell his story as well and I had a similar feeling listening to him. What occurred to me today, though, was that the feeling I had when listening to J.P. was the same feeling I had listening to Stewart - which has to do with the time stopping experience of getting lost in the vulnerability, authenticity, and raw storytelling of hopelessness turned hopeful. I’m excited to showcase these stories so that you can find a glimmer of light in the darkness. This is my hope for you as you listen to the stories you will hear on Sobriety Checkpoint. I hope that you will take what you want and leave the rest, pay attention to the similarities and not the differences. Now more about Stewart - He describes himself as a pretty ordinary man but he spent most of his adult life influenced by an addiction to drugs and alcohol. This addiction took him to a place where he thought his only option was to end his own life but luckily his attempt at suicide failed. Not long after he decided that his life needed to change and he embarked on a journey into recovery. Now with over 10 years of continuous sobriety he’s on a new journey. One where he’s trying to help as many people as he can using his experience of addiction. His book, ‘Me and My Addiction’ is available on Amazon. This book is written in a way that he hopes will give some inspiration to addicts to change their lives too while it also educates family members of addicts so they can better help their loved ones. He’s also launched a new recovery brand called Sobriety Rocks. His aim is to help people with the tools of recovery while also breaking the stigma that sobriety is boring. He wants to show people that sobriety is more fun than you might expect and it truly does Rock. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Thu, 10 Aug 2023 - 16min - 20 - 18 | Is alcohol your best friend when you’re feeling lonely? Learn about authenticity & transparency as a means to break free from lonliness
Today, I share more about my story - what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now. I was so lonely. I was depressed, anxious, suicidal. In recovery, I started to learn what grace was. I saw other people being authentic, being real, being raw. Because of someone else's authenticity inviting me into a relationship and connection with them. I learned how to be authentic. Those relationships, that authenticity, that transparency from so many people who came before me has helped me to learn the importance of authenticity, the importance of transparency. The importance of being real and being okay with the fact that I'm not perfect, that I am powerless. Desperation and admitting my powerlessness has been the most beautiful gift I've ever received in my life. -I’m not a representative of any particular 12 step program -Authenticity invites connection -Authenticity & Transparency aren’t the same as airing out all your dirty laundry **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Thu, 03 Aug 2023 - 15min - 18 - 16 | Are you looking for a safe, comfortable, happy life? Where does your joy come from?
Safe. Comfortable. Happy. It doesn’t really exist and it’s a very Western idea. It's a very American Christian desire to just be safe, comfortable, happy. There's parts of me that have this desire to step into the messiness of life because I think that the messiness is where I find God. Being able to be with just the rawness of reality and the authenticity of people who are truly vulnerable. I think when I'm in a place where I can be vulnerable and raw, that's where God shows up for me. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Thu, 27 Jul 2023 - 13min - 16 - 14 | Are you a dad in recovery that learned you have to sweep your feelings under the rug? Find freedom from this mindset - mental health, sobriety, and fatherhood with J.P. Cifelli
I’m excited to have J.P. Cifelli join me on today’s episode to share a little bit about himself and his story as a dad in recovery. He has been in recovery for 15 years and he’s passionate about men’s mental health. He says, “Without my mental health. I am very unpleasant and the world is unpleasant. It's like a domino effect, I'd say. I focused on sobriety and then the mental health came, then focused on that. Sobriety comes naturally when my mental health is in order, and then I became a dad. The key thing about being a dad, for me, is I have to make sure that my sobriety and my mental health are kind of number one. And I know that sounds weird putting that as number one, when I'm talking about being a parent, but I can't be the most productive, present parent if those things are not dialed in.” **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Thu, 20 Jul 2023 - 09min - 14 - 12 | Do you expect to be abandoned or rejected? You’re not alone in this, and there is an explanation (attachment theory) and a solution
Whether you like it or not, you're constantly, unconsciously expecting your romantic partner or even other people in your life, to act like your parents did, and because of those expectations a dynamic is created where we learn to expect certain behaviors from other people. As we’re growing up we learn to expect certain things from our parents based on past experience, and because of that, we take those expectations into our relationships in adulthood. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Thu, 13 Jul 2023 - 08min - 12 - 10 | Are you trying to find your worth in achievement or perfectionism? It’s time to flip the paradigm
I don’t know about you - but I have had my fair share of analysis paralysis, a common symptom of perfectionism. It’s been a constant struggle, trying to make sure that everything is perfect before starting, or not starting at all because of thinking it’s not enough. Growing up, I had perfectionist stress - alcohol really helped bring relief. It helped me to stop caring about the things I was stressed out about. I went to the other extreme, from caring too much to not caring at all. Now here I am, 12 years sober trying to find the healthy middle because alcohol isn’t an option anymore but perfectionism kind of is. I don’t know about you - but I don’t want to fill this God-sized hole in my heart with perfectionism anymore, the same way I decided to stop filling that God-sized hole with alcohol. Are you constantly trying to find your worth in achievement or perfectionism? It’s time to learn how to flip that paradigm! **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Tue, 27 Jun 2023 - 18min - 9 - 08 | Have you heard yourself say, ”A part of me feels this way... and another part feels that way...”? Does having mixed feelings make you feel crazy? This episode will help.
Hey Sober Mama! I remember struggling with getting sober, a part of me wanted to stop and another part couldn’t imagine life without alcohol. And now, as a sober mom - a current struggle is constant anxiety, internal conflict of different parts having different emotions. I want to be optimistic and have confidence around what I’m doing, but a part of me constantly feels not good enough. A part of me is optimistic and confident and is at conflict with the part that doesn’t feel good enough, smart enough, fill in the blank and then add enough… A part of me wants to play and another part is reserved and holds back. I know your struggles with imposter syndrome, with wishing you could play more, have more joy, have more fun but I also know that you struggle and hold back just like I do. Today we’re going to talk about why. I’m so glad you’re here! **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Grab your keys and let’s go for a drive... Tue, 30 May 2023 - 16min - 7 - 06 | May is Mental Health Awareness Month- Struggling with balance? Do this one thing to jumpstart a balanced life and improve symptoms of anxiety
Hey Sober Mama! Trying to find balance in sobriety as a sober mom is an ongoing struggle. Being out of balance can cause higher anxiety, depression, and stress. Doing too much and leaning toward perfection isn’t going to reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, or stress, perfectionism will likely increase all of these issues. And the opposite is also true, doing nothing isn’t going to help either. All or nothing mentality is so common for people in recovery, today we’re going to talk about how to combat perfectionism and all or nothing thinking by focusing on balance, and I’m going to talk about one way to kickstart a balanced lifestyle to improve symptoms of anxiety. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Fri, 05 May 2023 - 13min - 5 - 04 | Patience, Thermometers, Coffee Creamer - lessons in emotional sobriety
Hey Sober Mama, Who are you? Where do you place your identity? Is your identity in your work, or in your motherhood, or in some other performance based activity? In today’s episode, we’re talking about patience and how identity and patience intersect with one another. We’re also talking about how thermometers and taking a toddler’s temperature relates to patience (haha). Even though patience isn’t something I have mastered, and when it comes down to it, I’m never going to be patient 100% of the time (because I’m human), I think it’s still an important topic to explore together. Let’s learn together how to be more patient with those parts of us that aren’t so patient. When I place my identity into something that continuously changes, something that is performance based, it directly affects my self-worth. When I perform well in that thing that is my identity, I am worthy. And when I don’t perform as well as I would like, I am unworthy. This is the perfect breeding ground for depression, anxiety, and perfectionism. So where, then, do I find my identity? **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Fri, 21 Apr 2023 - 10min - 3 - 02 | ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF (Part 2)- My addiction recovery and journeying toward emotional sobriety
Hey Sober Mama! I used burnout and anxiety as a motivator. I didn’t realize it was a motivator because I felt like I was in a rut. But it motivated me to ask for God for help. And that’s actually all I could do is ask for help. Let burn out be a motivator for you too. If the only thing you can do is say a small prayer, “God help me,” then do that. And maybe you already have, maybe that’s how you found me. I’m glad you’re here. In this episode, I continue sharing my story with postpartum mental health and my journey toward emotional sobriety. I thought I was seeking relief, and I got that relief, but I got so much more. My journey toward emotional sobriety has led me here… to you…to pass on what I’ve been given. Because you can’t keep it unless you give it away… **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Grab your keys and let’s go for a drive... Fri, 21 Apr 2023 - 11min - 2 - 01 | ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF (Part 1): Anxiety, Burn-Out, and Mom Guilt - I didn’t get sober to live this way
Hey Sober Mama! Welcome to the first episode of Sobriety Checkpoint. In this two part series, I’d like to introduce myself and what this podcast is all about. This is where I started a few years ago - I was angry, anxious and full of mom guilt that said, “You wanted this life, you should be happy about it. Why are you so angry - look at that beautiful baby, you shouldn’t be depressed. You’re a therapist, you seriously think you can help anyone when you haven’t even figured it out!” In this podcast, I’m going to share a little bit about my journey with anger, burn-out, mom guilt, and my sobriety journey. An important lesson I learned is that healing comes from connection. I look forward to journeying with you and hope to teach you more about what I’ve learned on this beautiful sobriety journey I’m on. **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run.. Fri, 21 Apr 2023 - 14min - 1 - TRAILER \\ SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT
Are you a parent in recovery struggling with your emotional sobriety & feeling anxious about whether or not you’re doing this parenting thing right? Are you a self-proclaimed perfectionist constantly worried about what others think of you? Do you feel childhood and family patterns repeating themselves in your marriage or relationships? Did the pink cloud fade a long time ago only to be replaced with the restlessness, irritability, and discontent of those familiar drunken days? Sobriety has given you the ability to be a high achiever, it’s given you your dream job and a beautiful family - but you’re still dissatisfied. In this podcast you’re gonna find solutions to emotional health, relationship and parenting conflict, and that critical inner voice as well as transparent and authentic conversations about navigating mental health, faith, and relationships in recovery. I know the mom guilt that says, “this is what you wanted, why aren’t you happy?” I know your perfectionism, your worry of what others think of you, and your critical inner voice. I tried to strive and achieve to find happiness but that only left me more anxious, angry, and disconnected. I finally realized I needed to discover my true identity and let go of perfectionism and lean into love, curiosity, and playfulness. I’m still learning to slow down enough to enjoy the ride.. will you join me? If you’re ready to embrace the desperation of earlier days and face the challenges of overcoming perfectionism, healing that critical inner voice, and improving your mindset & emotional health so you can experience peace in life, then welcome to Sobriety Checkpoint! **It’s time for that desperately sought after solo Target run..
