You don't make a sale, you build a sale with Shelley Walters
Shelley Walters believes in the ability of the individual. In people being able to surprise themselves and those around them. And this is what she aims to unlock with everything that she does. Raised in a difficult environment, she quickly realised her background needn’t dictate where she went in life. That lesson, and many others along the way, helped her to see that we all have the potential to achieve more if we simply put the right steps in place to get there.
As the founder and CEO of The Sales Counsel, she established a first-of-its-kind on the African continent: a remote sales education platform that empowers sales teams to deliver better results. As the host of The Shift Show podcast, she shares her experience and lively personality with an ever-growing audience. And as she continues to take on ever more interesting projects, she always remains true to her guiding principles and the belief that we can shed our self-doubt to achieve and surpass our potential.
Shelley gives us a whistle stop tour of Sales, the highs and lows, the risk of technology on sales, tools to use in your sales process, sales cycles, how to build a sale and so much more.

Tue, 22 Mar 2022 - 26min - 190 - How to be more, do more, have more with Gavin Ingham
In this episode of #SpeakingBusiness Podcast I talk to Gavin Ingham.
What differentiates high performers from good performers? What helps one person to achieve in 3 months what others do in 12? These are the questions that have inspired Gavin Ingham for the last 20 years and have led to his #IAM10 methodology for high performance.
The world is changing faster than ever. There is more competition than ever before. The global economy, AI, automation all mean that you and your people need to work with conviction, embrace change, maximise productivity and add more value to every situation. Good enough is not good enough anymore. You need to be the best. You need to be a 10.
Gavin shares what he thinks makes a bookable speaker, how this has changed over the past few years, why only a small percentage of speakers succeed and what speakers can do to make the difference. He’ll also share the three things he’d recommend to a speaker wanting more business.

Tue, 06 Jul 2021 - 09min - 162 - The Pain-Free Way to Boost Economic Growth with Dag Detter
My guest this week is a specialist on the world’s largest and most secret asset segment – public asset. The hidden goldmine owned by you and me and seen all around us but yet kept in the dark by outdated public systems.
He led the first effort by a European government to systematically address the ownership and management of government enterprises and real estate. He is the author of ‘The Public Wealth of Nations’ – The Economist and Financial Time’s best book of the year, as well as ‘The Public Wealth of Cities’.
Please welcome my guest, Dag Detter.
Bio
Dag Detter offers us a unique idea which will revolutionise they way we think of public finance, be it for a national government or a city. He has unrivalled hands-on experience, backed up by academic data and research, to demonstrate that this is an invaluable tool to boost the economy and fight corruption. The idea of the public wealth of nations identifies a problem that few people had realised exists. It shatters the tired categories of left and right. And it suggests a relatively pain-free way of boosting economic growth.
As President of Stattum, the Swedish government holding company, and a Director at the Ministry of Industry, Dag Detter led the restructuring of the Swedish government’s portfolio of state owned enterprises, representing some 25 per cent of the domestic economy. The first attempt by a government to systematically address the ownership and management of government enterprises, quickly yielded high returns and the portfolio ultimately outperformed the local stock market.
Detter has worked extensively as an investment banker and an advisor in Asia and Europe and served as Non-Executive Director on a range of boards of private and public companies.
He now specialises in advising on the restructuring of public sector balance sheets and the management of under-performing public assets. He assists governments and public institutions in designing and implementing strategies for restoring balance sheet strength.
Dag Detter is the co-author of The Public Wealth of Nations, selected as; The Economist’s Book of the Year 2015 and The FT’s best book of the year 2015, as well as the forthcoming book The Public Wealth of Cities.

Tue, 23 Mar 2021 - 25min - 147 - How to be a Business Chameleon with Gerald Ratner
My guest this week is a British household name, he took over his family’s jewellery business in 1984. By 1990 he had grown it from 130 stores to 2500. But everything changed overnight in 1991 when, during a speech for the Institute of Directors, he described a Ratner’s sherry decanter as ‘total crap’.
In December 2020, he published his latest book called Reinvent Yourself co-authored with Rob Moore. It shows you how to embrace change, take the unpopular path and become a business chameleon.
Voted as one of the top 10 best public speakers, Gerald Ratner will share his story and the rollercoaster ride that he experienced when he had nothing else to lose.
Bio
Gerald Ratner is best known as the former millionaire chief executive of the major British jewellery chain Ratners Jewellery, when he achieved notoriety after making a speech which caused the company’s bankruptcy.
Gerald Ratner based his philosophy of business on his experiences as a boy in Petticoat Lane Market. He observed that “the people who shouted the loudest and appeared to give the best offers sold the most”. On this basis he built up an extremely successful chain of jewellers during the 1980s, Ratners Jewellery, of which he was chief executive. The shops shocked the formerly staid jewellery industry by displaying fluorescent orange posters advertising cut price bargains, and by offering low price ranges.
Gerald Ratner took over the family jewellery chain in the mid 80s, becoming one of Britain’s best known businessmen. He transformed it from 130 stores with sales of £13m to a public company with 2,500 stores and sales of over £1.2bn. By 1990, Ratner’s was the world’s largest jewellery retailer with profits in excess of £120m.
Following a widely reported gaffe in which he compared his products to M&S prawn sandwiches, Gerald was forced to sell the business. Reduced to virtually nothing and shunned by banks and prospective employers, he eventually picked himself up and clawed his way back. The internet jewellery business is now the largest in the sector, perhaps presaging a return to the high street. Subsequently Ratner has set up new, much smaller businesses including a health club and an on-line jewellery store collaboration called Gerald Online.
After turning around his fortunes, Gerald talks with typical candour and a great deal of humour about the rollercoaster journey. He even raises a smile when he produces The Sun’s list of the ’50 biggest mistakes of all time’ – in which his is ranked top!
He now runs, the UK’s largest online jewellery business Gerald Online.

Tue, 22 Dec 2020 - 32min - 135 - Reinvention - Upsize even if you feel like a hot mess! with Cally Beaton
With me today I have a comedian, business leader, writer and entrepreneur. She has held senior management positions at some of the biggest media companies in the world, including 10-years as Senior Vice President at the US studio giant Viacom, where she oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget for brands including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount.
While working for Comedy Central, on the road with the late, great Joan Rivers, she was nudged into the sphere of performance.
On top of all this she holds a Masters in Neuro Linguistic Programming and has worked for many years, alongside her not inconsiderable day jobs, as a sought-after Executive Coach to the great and the good in industry, public life and politics.
Please welcome comedian, writer and businesswoman Cally Beaton.
Bio
Cally Beaton is a comedian, writer, speaker and business mentor. Of the rising stars on the circuit today, few can boast the journey into comedy that Cally Beaton can.
Cally is a natural storyteller full of intelligent, distinctive and punchline-rich material and her star is fast on the rise. She has held senior management positions at some of the biggest media companies in the world including MTV, UKTV and Viacom. Early in her career she headed an independent television production company that was bought by ITV’s Carlton Television (where a certain David Cameron was on the board). She left to set up a successful creative consultancy company and went on to do a 10-year stint as Senior Vice President at the US studio giant Viacom. There, Cally oversaw a multi-million-dollar budget for channels including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount; if you want someone to blame for bringing South Park and SpongeBob SquarePants to the world, you need look no further. She has a Masters in Neuro Linguistic Programming and has worked for many years, alongside her not inconsiderable day jobs, as a sought-after Executive Coach to the great and the good in industry, public life and politics.
It was while working for Comedy Central, on the road with the late, great Joan Rivers, that Cally was nudged into the sphere of performance. Acting as an unofficial business event warm-up for Ms. Rivers, it was she who told Cally she had what it took to be a stand-up and so, as a 45-year-old single parent, Cally first took to the stage. She quickly cemented her position as one of the most exciting and distinctive new stand-ups in the country, with her unflinching, acerbic and intelligent brand of comedy. She has appeared on BBC2’s QI multiple times and as a guest on Radio 4’s Museum of Curiosity, as well as BBC Radio 6 Music and as a regular contributor on BBC London. In 2019 Cally has appeared as an expert on BBC2’s The Apprentice You’re Fired, as well as a panelist on Radio 4’s The Unbelievable Truth with David Mitchell and BBC’s The Blame Game. Cally also writes for The Guardian.
Her first foray to The Edinburgh Fringe in 2016 was a big success. Her show ‘Cat Call’, a double header with Catherine Bohart, received a Malcolm Hardee Award. She then followed up with her debut solo hour in 2017, ‘Super Cally Fragile Lipstick’. The show was a sell-out hit, receiving multiple 4**** reviews, national press coverage and picked as Best of Edinburgh Fringe by The Arts Desk. Cally built on this success with her hit Edinburgh 2019 show – ‘Invisible’ at The Assembly Rooms, which enjoyed numerous accolades and sell-out rooms. After multiple Finalist credits in competitions in the UK and the US, Cally went on to win the prestigious 2018 Piccadilly Comedy Club New Act of the Year competition, after being tipped as one of the comedians to watch for 2017 by Chortle.
Drawing on her vast experience, eclectic life and unique wit, she is able to strike the perfect balance of smart, insightful, and entertaining. She is a gifted host and MC, with a natural ability to work a room, and gives sharp, inspirational and thought-provoking keynote and after-dinner speeches. Cally has a hard-won skill set few comedians can boast and has worked with – to name a few – Deutsche Bank, Sony Pictures, IMG, Endemol, Channel 4, Hat Trick, ScreenSkills, Women in Film & Television, UCL. PWC, Aviva, Sky Television, L’Oreal, Lloyds, Wella, Capgemini and Disneyland.
