The more the merrier right? The more the better! Well, not in product design, as far as feature addition is concerned. It is not worthwhile to add features just because adding them is convenient for the team, or because internal stakeholders want some feature in there - all about this and more in this episode on Feature Creep - based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

All decisions in life can be summarised into a flowchart-like system. In the words of Gretchen Rubin, "If you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough." Wed, 19 May 2021 - 05min - 91 - 90 - Faith is replacing Knowledge
We all know speed equals distance by time. But when a sniper calculates the speed of a bullet, they take into account wind speed, temperature, altitude, angle of the shot, and sometimes even, the rotation of the earth! We don't need to know all these for a paintball fight, but in reality, this process - like almost all other processes around us - becomes a black box, and we have to have faith in the sniper, than to have knowledge about the sniping. "It's not for you" - we are clearly not supposed to say that to anyone. But if you want to succeed, you must. Because in doing so, not only are your showing immense respect for those people who have been the target recipients of your product, but also those who have not - because then clearly you do not wish to waste their time convincing them that it is indeed for them. A dictatorship is not always wrong. Similarly, a democratic path is not always the best to pursue. In design processes, likewise, the sole-designer-says-the-final-word way is not always the best idea. Similarly, clouding a project with stakeholder buy-in, is sometimes not the correct way to go. It all depends on the situation and the work at hand - all this and much more in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

"Weapons of influence" - that's what everyones is armed with in today's world. Reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity - these 6 principles are foundational pillars to help you not only become a skilled persuader, but also to defend yourself against similar people. All this and more, in this episode - a review of the book, "Influence", by Dr. Robert B. Cialdini.

Thu, 11 Mar 2021 - 07min - 68 - 67 - The magic of Cognitive Dissonance
Our minds work in funny ways. Many of us have high morals, we live up to strong beliefs. Yet, if we dig deep, we'd probably find that many of our actions are in stark contrast to what we believe in. Even though we know being a couch-potato is wrong, many of us still become one. This is where a guilty feeling creeps in - and we try to self-justify. It's hard to change our behaviours, but easier to tweak our beliefs into becoming consistent with our immoral actions - which in turn will get us towards no better place in life. All this and more in this episode about cognitive dissonance, based on an excerpt from The Decision Book, by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler.

Sun, 07 Mar 2021 - 04min - 67 - 66 - The importance of Control levels
How would you save a document in a word processor? Novice users would go to the Menu bar, click on the 'File' option, go down the drop-down menu, and click on 'Save'. More proficient users would instead just hit Control+S or Command+S on the keyboard, and be done with the exact same job. Both methods allow you to reach the same goal, but one favours simplicity and a structured path, while the other favours efficiency and gives you more control over the tool. All this and more in this episode based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

Fri, 05 Mar 2021 - 05min - 66 - 65 - Have no fear, FOMO is here!
From its birth in 1996 by Dr. Dan Herman till today, there's very few people who don't know about FOMO. Yet there's very few people who can overcome it, more few who know how it's leveraged, and only about a handful of people know how they can leverage it in a proper and ethical way to make this world a better place for everyone to live in. In the end, it's all about perspective, and living up to your morals.

A pointed kettle and a round kettle are placed on the kitchen counter. They are grey in colour, of the same height and width and breadth. They have the same metallic glossy finish, and the same black handle. The handle on the pointed one is at a sharp right angle, and it's a straight piece of metal. The handle on the round one, is a curved one, made of rubber. Which one would your brain prefer? All of this and more in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

Sun, 21 Feb 2021 - 05min - 62 - 61 - Constraints in Design - priceless!
Why do people keep wearing masks the wrong way all the time - some wear it on their chin, some on their neck, and some dangle it from one ear. Some even cover just the lips and keep their nose poking out. Well, there's no constraint on these activities of any kind. Basically, if you can think about any oddly creative way to use a product, rest assured that unless you limit those unintended actions, they will be done. You need to have a method of limiting the possible actions that can be performed on a system. Well, constraints to the rescue! - based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

Mon, 15 Feb 2021 - 04min - 60 - 59 - The Law of Similarity & power of Consistency
To indicate and reinforce the relatedness of elements, or to indicate and reinforce the differences among elements, you would need similarity, and the lack of similarity respectively. And to enable people to efficiently transfer knowledge to new contexts, learn new things quickly, and focus attention on the relevant aspects of a task, you would need consistency. More on these two very important principles of design, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

"Even if it's true that the average man seems most comfortable with the commonplace and familiar, it is equally true that catering to bad taste, which we so readily attribute to the average reader, merely perpetuates that mediocrity and denies the reader one of the most easily accessible means for aesthetic development and eventual enjoyment" - read that again, and you'll understand the depth of wisdom from which it has been spoken. Sat, 06 Feb 2021 - 04min - 57 - 56 - Confirmation bias - stay aware!
Debates and design research require adequate data, most definitely, but what data we choose to present, and what we ignore, is up to us. And that is where the poison of the confirmation bias creeps in. It is worthwhile to remember that we often favour information that confirms a pre-conjured belief which we have high emotional investments in, and that we often ignore and try to actively stamp out information that contradicts us. This is wrong. This needs an antidote – all this and more in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

You might feel you're a hardworking person who has achieved a lot owing to all the sacrifices you've done in life. A friend might see you as a lazy person, who gets really lucky when it comes to achievements. This isn't wrong to have. But, it's a mistake if you did not try to find out all perspectives of yourself. Only then could you understand your behavioural traits and ingrained tendencies. Sun, 31 Jan 2021 - 05min - 55 - 54 - The Principle of Common Fate
In video games, simplifying playability by making it clear who is being controlled and how to control them is perhaps the most important - and this is done often by making the names and controller icons move with the players - resulting in the viewers perceiving those otherwise separate entities as a group. Designing games isn't all fun and games after all. All this and more about the Principle of Common Fate in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

There is a very prominent and strong relationship between the perceived height of a ceiling, and cognition. Tue, 19 Jan 2021 - 06min - 51 - 50 - Prompt & Intuitive Decision-making
Decision-making is not something to be taken lightly, especially at the initital stages of a process. Also, it is not something that only logic and rationale can decipher and process. The main idea is to sometimes switch off the rational side of the brain, and get in touch directly with a somewhat higher power - our intuition. After all, intuition is knowledge that we feel but cannot really put to words. All this and more in this episode, based on an excerpt from The Decision Book by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler.

Sat, 16 Jan 2021 - 05min - 50 - 49 - Classical Conditioning & the Mere-Exposure effect
The more people are exposed to a stimulus, the stronger their feeling associated with it. If the stimulus is neutral or a positive one, people tend to like it more and more. But, if it's jarring and negative, people start to dislike it exponentially over time. Advertising and marketing campaigns use the classical conditioning principle and the mere-exposure effect over and over to enhance their credibility, and improve people's perceptions about them - all this and more in this episode, based on an excerpt, from the Universal Principles of Design.

Thu, 07 Jan 2021 - 04min - 47 - 46 - Chunking in Visual Design
When someone tells you their phone number by calling out all ten digits without pausing, you would probably ask them to repeat. But, if they had called out the same phone number, in three blocks, even if the pace of calling out the digits remained the same, it would be much easier for you to retain that information, and recall it later on. Such is the power of chunking. It is simple, but, it can be misunderstood and is often misused in design. In this episode, you'll come to see the what's, the why's and the correct-how's of chunking in design - based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

Mon, 04 Jan 2021 - 05min - 46 - 45 - Choice Overloads - limit your options
The paradox-of-choice exists in our day to day lives more than most of us can possible comprehend. At a supermarket, the greater the variety of jams, the lesser the chance that any of it will be sold. At a car dealership, the greater the variety of colours, the more frustrated the decision-making process will be. At a restaurant, the more the number of items on the menu, the longer time you'll take to order, getting you even more hungry, and over-ordering in the process. All of these are Choice Overloads, and we'll understand the concept in this episode, based on an excerpt from The Decision Book, by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler.

Fri, 01 Jan 2021 - 04min - 45 - 44 - The Back-of-the-Dresser principle in Design
First informally introduced by Steve Jobs, this principle says that quality of materials, precision fit, uniformity of finish, internal consistency, and marks of the maker or signatures - are prime indicators of craftsmanship. We all need to apply excellent design and development to all aspects of a product - by treating all invisible areas as visible - after all, light is the best disinfectant for shoddy craftsmanship. There's a reason why apartment complexes today, advertise plenty of greenery in and around them. There's a reason, entrances to many hospitals and universities have some amount of trees and greenery. There's a reason, why people who work and study in and around nature, tend to be more efficient than others. All this comes from the power of nature - more precisely, the power of the colour green - all this and more in this episode, based on an excerpt, from the Universal Principles of Design.

Sun, 20 Dec 2020 - 03min - 41 - 40 - The art of Analysing Feedback
Knowing what your strengths are is the most important thing an individual can know about themself. And the process of getting to know yourself better comes through the art, and science, of properly analysing feedback and critique - much more of this in this episode, based on an excerpt, from The Decision Book, by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler.

Thu, 17 Dec 2020 - 04min - 40 - 39 - The Attractiveness Bias & Baby-face Bias
More people are conned by good-looking salesmen and con-men, than by not-so-attractive dishonest people. Again, most people love babies, and would be eager to help them and assume their helplessness. If you looked like Johny Bravo though, you would be likely to be treated the way he is, if you tried to behave like a baby. These are as real as laws of physics - these are two of the most significant design principles - based on an excerpt, from Universal Principles of Design.

Running a business through two recessions, one burst bubble, multiple business model shifts and numerous doom-and-gloom predictions, all the while keeping it profitable, has generated enough experience for Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hanson. In this book, they do not propose any academic theories of business. All that they write is based on years of experience, and you'd be wise to take their word for it. David and Jason claim that Rework is all about "building, running, and growing (or not growing) a business"; but it's so much more.

Fri, 11 Dec 2020 - 04min - 38 - 37 - Working efficiently with the Eisenhower Matrix
Whenever a job lands on your desk, you would be wiser to not start it immediately. Instead, break it down using the Eisenhower matrix and try to find out the most appropriate way to tackle the work. You might find that it is not urgent, but important. Or that it's, urgent, but not really of much importance. Or, it could be both - important and urgent at the same time. But, it could also be neither urgent, not important. For all these 4 situations, if you have decision steps in place, there would be a proper structure to your work, and more importantly, your time and task management, would be functioning at its finest. Ignore the Eisenhower matrix at your own peril.

In movies, you have popular characters like the hero, the villain, the rebel, the mentor, the trickster, and plots like the tragedy. the quest, the voyage and return, and Hollywood's oh-so-favourite - conquering the monster. These are all archetypal social roles and stories. Archetypes are the reason you move away from where you see a spider-like or snake-like form. Archetypes are the reason you associate Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods with Nike, and rough-and-tough outlaws with Harley-Davidson, all this and more in this episode based on an excerpt, from the Universal Principles of Design.

Sat, 05 Dec 2020 - 05min - 36 - 35 - Don't balance; Counterbalance!
Your life and work are not two liquids in the same bucket that you need to keep a tab on to make sure that none of them exceed the limit and overflow. No. Your personal life and your professional life are two very distinct buckets that you're holding in separate hands. The reason this analogy is important is not to create a compartmentalisation - but to help you understand how important it is to counter-balance both weights such that you can stand upright - and walk on to achieve extraordinary results. Don't try to attain "balance" - that's impossible. Instead, counter-balance - based on an excerpt, from The One Thing, by Gary Keller.

Coca Cola bottles have been evolving for over a century now. But the more curvier and hourglass shaped bottles stand out from all the other designs. They have a unique aesthetic and create a positive emotional appeal. They were called the "Mae West" bottle, because like her, the bottle with its unique design, had projections of health, vitality, sexiness and femininity - like the actress Mae West, the bottle demanded, and justifiably received, attention from all people. This is the power of Anthropomorphism in design - based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

Your road to success is always under construction. If you build strong foundations, and have a smooth top, there can be no stopping you from smoothly rolling ahead to success. But, if the physical environment is distracting, and if the people around you are not actually providing support, you might need to rethink your choices. Do not take a detour to your goal, just because the people or place is not up to the mark - instead pave your path with the right people and take ownership of your environment - your productivity depends on it. Mon, 23 Nov 2020 - 04min - 32 - 31 - Understanding Affordances
When playing with Legos, do you imagine any other way that allows 2 Lego bricks to stick other than the obvious pimples-in-dimples way? When using a screwdriver, do you hold the metallic end, and use the rubber grip to tighten a screw? Do you think of sitting on an upright Coca Cola bottle, and of drinking water out of a wooden stool? No, no, no! All this is because of affordances - good affordances in design make it inconceivable for us to imagine using a tool any other way than its "meant" to be. A thorough understanding of positive and negative affordances, dealt out in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

It's surprising how many people seem to feel pride in their bad daily habits - working and gaming throughout the night, way into early dawn, getting 3 to 4 hours of sleep and then starting off again. They might feel very productive from all the hours spent waking up, but personal energy mismanagement is a silent thief of productivity. Extraordinary achievements demand high energy, and that can be attained only through rigorous development of good habits - based on an excerpt from, The One Thing, by Gary Keller.

Why did some of the first Nokia cellphones come with customisable back covers, and coloured key rings? As it turns out, the things that look good and pretty to us, are more likely to be tried, to be accepted, to be displayed, and even to be repeatedly used, than ugly things. This happens because beautiful-looking things - aesthetic objects - are perceived to be way easier to use, than ugly things. This is the Aesthetic-Usability effect - based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

"People don't buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it." Every entity has a WHY - a purpose, a HOW - a simpler term for a value proposition, and a WHAT - the self-explanatory products/services. Mishaps happen while communicating with the world, when these entities start from the WHAT, move onto the HOW, and end with the WHY. The only correct way, is to start with Why - people need a belief to identify with - people want a purpose to support. We need to know why we exist, and why people should care that we do - a review of one of the most famous books of Simon Sinek - Start With Why.

Extraordinary achievements mandate the need for tremendous amounts of energy. The main thing to learn is how to create this energy, and sustain it. You need to protect your work-time by letting this chaos develop around you. If you fight, or try to resolve the chaos, you lose. Have you ever wondered why a vernier calliper and a screw gauge can give different measurement readings, even if you designed them specially to be equally precise? It's the same reason why, when boiling water, you dip the thermometer in the water to check its reading, and not place the thermometer beside the pot of boiling water. It all comes down to another very significant factor that is crucial in addition to precision - accuracy. And this is where the Abbe principle comes into play - all in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.

When you say "Yes" to someone or something, you are inevitably saying "No" to something else. This is the way to judge what you are saying "Yes" and "No" to. If your work, your craft and your goals are your priority - it is crucial that you need to say No to a lot of things - to requests for help, for advice, for assistance. But, always be kind and respectful - try to give leads to people who might say yes. Saying "No" the right way will not make you feel self-centered. Instead it will liberate you to take up the most important responsibility to work on your dreams. You need to say No more often than you might think - all this and more, in this episode, based on an excerpt from The One Thing, by Gary Keller.

Critiquing is not getting together a random group of people in the room, and letting them make the design for you. With some conscious effort, critiquing will cease to be that awkward phase in design and development where people nod their heads without listening and greet each other with fake smiles. Critiquing is, and should always be, very human at its core. Giving feedback is the best kind of help, but only when it's done right.

Sun, 04 Oct 2020 - 05min - 15 - 14 - We are all Designers
Personalisations and customisations exist for the sole reason that we should be able to make anonymous objects, our own - by altering them, reassembling them, designing them - to fit our personalities. In this process, our belongings become unique to us, and we hold them very dear to us. If we did not personalise what we own, it would have no attachment or bonding, and more importantly - it would not be an extension of our identities. We just didn't think of it this way, but we are all designers. This episode is based on an excerpt from "Emotional Design" by Donald Norman.

The 31.5 Guy
Thu, 01 Oct 2020 - 04min - 14 - 13 - Book Review: Don't Make Me Think
People don't like to puzzle over how to do things - they like puzzles in their own place, when they want to be entertained or challenged - but not when they want to find when their dry-cleaner closes. The designs you craft should be self-explanatory, if not self-evident - your users should be able to "get it" without having to think about it. Usability is what separates average products from great ones, and all you need to know about it, in this review of "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug.

Mon, 28 Sep 2020 - 06min - 13 - 12 - The Black Swan Model
What you think you know, will not be sufficient to help you predict your future - and that is the very reason why you never expected the most unexpected events in your life. This is called the Black Swan model - we generally tend to cling most tightly to pillars that we see toppling. While your experiences do not make you any wiser. All this and more, in this episode, based on an excerpt from The Decision Book by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler.

Fri, 25 Sep 2020 - 04min - 12 - 11 - Why Lie-Detectors Don't Work
Polygraph tests, or lie-detector tests as they are commonly known, do not read minds. Nor do they read lies. They rely on small but significant physiological changes to predict whether a lie has been spoken, stemming from changes in certain emotions. You would be better off, calling them "emotion-detectors". False alarms are so often, and the underlying working principles dish out so flawed results in real life, that the National Research Council of the United States National Academics, has declared it unusable for legal and security screening. This episode is based on an excerpt from Emotional Design, written by Donald Norman.

Tue, 22 Sep 2020 - 05min - 11 - 10 - The Truth about Willpower
Our strongest mental muscle is our will power. And as it turns out, most of us do not exercise this muscle at all. It's not surprising then, that we often stray away from our goals. We think will-power is always their on call. Wrong. We think we can sometimes fight our negative urges and stay on track. Wrong. We believe our will-power can never be exhausted. Wrong. Everything you need to know about will power and start mastering it, in this episode, based on an excerpt from The One Thing by Gary Keller.

Sun, 20 Sep 2020 - 04min - 10 - 09 - The Power of Competitive Testing
Design teams need to assess a competitor's products from the end users' point of view, to make informed decisions regarding usability and learnability of their own product. Competitive testing is the best tool to not only understand the business audit results from a user-centred perspective, but also gain clarity about the social, economic and technical context that lead to the adoption of the products into daily lives.

Mon, 14 Sep 2020 - 04min - 8 - 07 - How to Resolve Conflicts elegantly?
All conflicts can have an emotional reaction, or a rational reaction. Emotional reactions include flight, fight and give up. Rational reactions are to evade the responsibility altogether, to compromise, or to reach a consensus. Only resolving conflicts by reaching a common consensus allows for both parties to have a win-win situation. All the other techniques will lead to a lose-win, or worse, a lose-lose situation.

Fri, 11 Sep 2020 - 04min - 7 - 06 - Usability "versus" Desirability - a meaningless debate
Are usability and desirability conflicting aspects of design? Which one should win? The correct answer, is both. One without the other, will create a bad experience. The symbiosis of usability and desirability, the perfect balance and the desired amalgamation of both — to create the best version of user experience, for any possible product — that is what marks the distinction between great products and bad design.

Wed, 02 Sep 2020 - 03min - 4 - 03 - Book Review: Emotional Design
Emotions are an integral part of our life. Only when we understand why we love or hate some everyday items around us, will we be able to design emotional machines, products that people can truly love and accept as part of their lives. This is just a glimpse of the gem of a book that is Emotional Design, by Donald A. Norman.
