In this episode we meet Aadith Moorthy, the CEO and co-founder of Boomitra, a company that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite technology to quantify and monetize soil carbon. They discuss the importance of soil carbon, the technology behind Boomitra, the role of carbon markets, and the future goals of the company. Boomitra means “Friend of the Earth” in Sanskrit. Aadith explains that soil carbon is critical for climate change mitigation, as it can store three times more carbon than the atmosphere. By working with farmers to implement regenerative agriculture practices, Boomitra aims to increase soil carbon and help mitigate climate change. The company's unique technology uses AI and satellite imagery to measure soil carbon at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Aadith emphasizes that "using satellites and AI, we are able to not only measure what's happening, but we are able to measure it at a 90% plus cost reduction compared to doing the soil sampling and every farmer getting it tested”. Boomitra’s approach ensures that the value of carbon credits reaches the communities that need it the most, with contracts stipulating that the majority of funds must go to the farmers. Aadith also addresses the recent debate around carbon markets, explaining how the company addresses concerns of over-crediting and ensures the validity of their carbon credits by using control sites and measuring additionality. Aadith's vision is to reach 500 million farmers by the end of the decade and achieve gigaton-scale carbon removal. He encourages listeners to think in terms of gigaton-scale solutions for climate change, stating, "that's how we can have a truly meaningful impact on climate change, be it adaptation or mitigation or anything else”. Throughout the episode, Aadith emphasizes the importance of technology, carbon markets, and gigaton-scale solutions in addressing climate change and supporting smallholder farmers around the world.

Maya has been at the forefront of the Delaware River protection and has been the leader of the Green Amendment movement. In the book, she discusses 2 case studies of Pennsylvania and Montana, where the legislation has been enacted and has provided landmark cases. A number of states are following. As Maya points out “Living in the United States, people don’t realize that while we recognize and protect speech, property, and gun rights, we don’t meaningfully recognize a right to drink clean water, breathe clean air, or live in the stable climate and healthy environments essential to supporting and sustaining healthy lives”. To continue to accept these realities is absurdity. To not do anything about them is obscenity. To not profit from the unexpected solutions that sustainability offers would be humankind’s greatest missed opportunity. (Bhatnagar and Anastas, 2022) "the work of sustainability, I would say, globally, has just started" Natural resource inputs to business operations are getting scarcer and more expensive, while climate-change-related economic shocks pose a risk to seamless operations and, more importantly, threaten business continuity. How can organizations integrate sustainable design in their overarching operations and align it with profitability and corporate strategy? In their book The Sustainability Scorecard: How to Implement and Profit from Unexpected Solutions, Bhatnagar and Anastas show business leaders and innovators how to create breakthrough sustainable products and processes that are good for the planet, human health, and profits. The Sustainability Scorecard is a digestible and comprehensive guide rooted in scientific and data-driven methodology. This required read unpacks how sustainable operations can produce beneficial results through market share and new service line expansion, supply chain and sourcing model transformation—driving the most consistent and long-term value. Based on Paul Anastas’s foundational Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry, the Sustainability Scorecard is the first scientifically rooted, data-driven methodology for creating inherently sustainable and profitable products and processes. By redesigning with sustainability as a key design element, firms open themselves to unexpected solutions, leapfrog innovations, and sources of value that simply don’t occur when sustainability is leveraged purely as a risk-avoidance and compliance measure. Bio Authors URVASHI BHATNAGAR, DPT, MBA is a healthcare executive whose career spans clinical care, research, advocacy and strategy and operations consulting for leading healthcare organizations. As a mission-driven population-health and sustainability expert, she has over a decade of healthcare leadership experience working with clients to advance health outcomes in underserved communities leveraging advanced analytics and strategy—to address barriers to care, advancing health equity, and improving access to life-altering high-quality care. Bhatnagar holds an MBA from Yale University and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Boston University. She believes global wellness can be achieved through sustained and intentional investment in products and processes that are designed to be inherently sustainable and capturing value from the triple bottom line advantages that sustainability offers. PAUL ANASTAS, PhD is the Director of Yale University’s Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, where he holds the Theresa and H. John Heinz chair in Chemistry for the Environment. Previously, he served as the Science Advisor to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the Agency’s Assistant Administrator for Research and Development, appointed by President Barack Obama.
