In this episode we meet Aadith Moorthy, the CEO and co-founder of Boomitra, a company that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and satellite technology to quantify and monetize soil carbon. They discuss the importance of soil carbon, the technology behind Boomitra, the role of carbon markets, and the future goals of the company.  Boomitra means “Friend of the Earth” in Sanskrit. Aadith explains that soil carbon is critical for climate change mitigation, as it can store three times more carbon than the atmosphere. By working with farmers to implement regenerative agriculture practices, Boomitra aims to increase soil carbon and help mitigate climate change. The company's unique technology uses AI and satellite imagery to measure soil carbon at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Aadith emphasizes that "using satellites and AI, we are able to not only measure what's happening, but we are able to measure it at a 90% plus cost reduction compared to doing the soil sampling and every farmer getting it tested”. Boomitra’s approach ensures that the value of carbon credits reaches the communities that need it the most, with contracts stipulating that the majority of funds must go to the farmers. Aadith also addresses the recent debate around carbon markets, explaining how the company  addresses concerns of over-crediting and ensures the validity of their carbon credits by using control sites and measuring additionality. Aadith's vision is to reach 500 million farmers by the end of the decade and achieve gigaton-scale carbon removal. He encourages listeners to think in terms of gigaton-scale solutions for climate change, stating, "that's how we can have a truly meaningful impact on climate change, be it adaptation or mitigation or anything else”. Throughout the episode, Aadith emphasizes the importance of technology, carbon markets, and gigaton-scale solutions in addressing climate change and supporting smallholder farmers around the world.

Existing laws have clearly failed us, writes Mark Ruffalo in his foreword. Longtime activist Maya van Rossum therefore has an interesting proposal. A green amendment. Protect our rights in the constitutions, at a national and state level. In her provocative and interesting book, she describes the damages inflicted to communities, the extent of destruction brought in the name of the extractive capitalism and the incapability of lawmakers to protect environmental rights. Communities and people are not disposable.  And she explores as well the connection with climate justice, being poor communities of immigrants, Latinos and people of color the most affected as Kerry Evelyn Harris clearly points out in her foreword. Maya has been at the forefront of the Delaware River protection and has been the leader of the Green Amendment movement. In the book, she discusses 2 case studies of Pennsylvania and Montana, where the legislation has been enacted and has provided landmark cases. A number of states are following.  As Maya points out “Living in the United States, people don’t realize that while we recognize and protect speech, property, and gun rights, we don’t meaningfully recognize a right to drink clean water, breathe clean air, or live in the stable climate and healthy environments essential to supporting and sustaining healthy lives”. The Whole world is a family,  “If we allow people to split us and create confrontation, everything is so much more difficult.” Erik Solheim is a well-known global leader on environment and development and an experienced peace negotiator. He served as Norwegian minister of Environment and International Development from 2005-2012. During that period, he initiated the global program for the conservation of rainforests. He brought through game-changing National legislation - among them the Biodiversity Act and legislation to protect Oslo city forests. He brought Norwegian development assistance to 1%, the highest in the world. He led the peace efforts in Sri Lanka from 1999-2009 as the main negotiator of the peace process and played a vital role in peace efforts in Nepal, Myanmar and Sudan. Erik was the Executive Chair of the OECD Development Assistance Committee (the main body of world donors) from 2012-2016,  Executive Director of UN Environment, and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations from 2016 to 2018. Currently, he is senior adviser at the World Resources Institute and President of the Belt and Road Green Development Institute in Beijing.

She has spent her academic career focusing on frontline communities who are the most vulnerable to energy production.  She is a Visiting Associate Professor at Yale Law School and an Associate Professor at Barry University School of Law. She teaches environmental law, property, and business organizations. She has presented her research on the law and policy of advanced biofuels in Abu Dhabi, Cairo, Cambridge, Doha, Denver, New York, and San Francisco.
