- 98 - A Precursor to Martial Law: The Plaza Miranda Bombing (1971)
As of recording this episode, the filing of candidacies for the upcoming 2025 midterm elections has concluded, which means it is election season all over again in the Philippines.
With that being said, throughout the course of our country’s history various political events that have led to violence and killings have occurred.
One of the most infamous incidents that changed the course of our country’s political landscape is The Plaza Miranda Bombing in 1971.
The Plaza Miranda Bombing, at the time, was viewed as one of the most infamous tragedies that happened during a political event.
On the evening of August 21, 1971, the Liberal Party, which was the opposition party against former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s Nacionalista Party, was holding a political rally at Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila.
As the rally was in full swing, two grenades were thrown onto the stage where the Liberal Party leaders were gathered. The explosions caused chaos and devastation, resulting in nine deaths and injuring 95 others. Among the casualties were a five-year-old child and Ben Roxas, a photographer for the Manila Times.

Fri, 25 Oct 2024 - 10min - 97 - A Lifeless Body Found Inside a Septic Tank: The Gruesome Murder of Tesa Marie Ygay (2019)
Before the coronavirus disease affected our daily lives, the month of April was the most exciting month for those students who will finish their studies from a long school journey, as it was a time when students graduated from their respective levels.
On April 8, 2019, the brutal killing of a 14-year-old girl happened near Cogon Cruz Integrated School, Danao City in Cebu.
An unidentified person reported a complaint to the authorities that there was a foul odor coming from the school's septic tank. Together with the barangay officials' help, the police discovered a young girl’s corpse.
They identified the victim as Tesa Marie Ygay. Those who were at the scene were shocked after discovering the young girl’s lifeless body with multiple stab wounds.

Fri, 11 Oct 2024 - 7min - 96 - Silverio Compound: The Most Violent Housing Demolition in Parañaque City (2012)
The upcoming 2025 midterm elections are near, which means the future of our leaders will be based on our votes this coming May.
Through the years, there have been various incidents or initiatives from well-known or infamous politicians that broke or paved the way for their careers in public service.
On April 23, 2012, a supposedly peaceful dismantling of a wet market quickly escalated into violence, resulting in one death and 40 injured people after the informal settlers of the Silverio Compound, fearing that they would lose their homes, confronted the police along Sucat Road in Parañaque City.
The sole casualty was Arnel Leonor, a 19-year-old resident of the said residential compound, lying on the pavement with a fatal gunshot wound in the head. The police brought him to the nearest medical facility, but he was declared dead on arrival.
This violent demolition in Paranaque City sparked discussions that highlighted the complex issues surrounding urban development, housing rights, and the need for more humane and inclusive approaches to addressing informal settlements.

Fri, 27 Sep 2024 - 13min - 95 - Sagay Massacre: The Brutal Murder of Nine Sugar Farmers (2018)
Sagay City, located in the northern part of the province of Negros Occidental, is a significant hub for agriculture resources, where its local community is deeply connected.
Historically, Sagay has been a major player in the sugar industry, which is a significant economic driver in the province.
However, despite economic gains from the sugar plantations in Sagay, most of its farmers and plantation workers are being treated poorly by greedy land owners and land grabbers, some of which are influential and are supported by some local politicians or possibly even nationwide-elected leaders.
The poor treatment received by sugar farmers in Sagay is just an understatement. Some of those who stand up and fight for their rights against these greedy influential land owners are often getting brutally punished and some are getting killed.
On the evening of October 20, 2018, nine farmers of the National Federation of Sugar Workers, which included four women and two minors, were having dinner in a makeshift tent when they were attacked by armed men.
There were survivors in the incident though their names were not reported to protect their identities.
The brutal incident happened at Hacienda Nene, a sugarcane plantation located in Barangay Bulanon, Sagay City.

Fri, 06 Sep 2024 - 17min - 94 - The Ultimate Cliffhanger: A Pine Tree in Dalaguete Saved 32 People (2010)
From time to time we make it our way to feature episodes with good outcomes. We know our podcast features true crime cases and accidents caused by humans or natural disasters, most of which did not have a happy ending, not that we expected it to be.
However, we stumbled upon a story way back in 2010 at Dalaguete, Cebu, where a pine tree saved the lives of 32 people inside a bus that was about to fall off a cliff.
This story was so amazing that we really need to go out of our way from our usual stories to cover this one for our listeners.

Fri, 16 Aug 2024 - 7min - 93 - Negros Navigation: The Tragic Sinking of M/V Don Juan (1980)
Before the country’s most disastrous ship-related tragedies, the MV Dona Paz incident. Seven years earlier, the tragic sinking of M/V Don Juan in April 1980 at the time was the most disastrous of such incidents in the Philippines.
Negligence played a big role in this tragic accident, various avoidable instances were a factor such as overloading of passengers, and the vessel’s captain playing mahjong moments before the accident causing the lives of 176 people and hundreds of missing people.
At the time, little that our elders knew that the tragedy that happened to M/V Don Juan would be the trigger point of various major incidents to come on what local conspiracy theorists branded as the Romblon Triangle, similar to the Bermuda Triangle in the United States.
Regardless on whether the curse of the Romblon Triangle is there or not, safety measures and attentiveness to the vessel and its surroundings were further highlighted in today's standards.

Fri, 02 Aug 2024 - 11min - 92 - Philippine Coast Guard: The Shooting of Taiwanese Fisherman Huang Shih-Cheng (2013)
The West Philippine Sea is one of the most conflicted areas in the world, with various countries such as the Philippines, China, Vietnam, and others in the Asia Pacific claiming territorial rights in the disputed region.
Given the heightened tensions between Manila and Beijing, we decided to look for incidents that fit our show’s genre.
We found one that happened in 2013 under the Aquino administration.
On May 9, 2013, a 65-year-old Taiwanese Fisherman named Huang Shih-Cheng, who was aboard a fishing boat, was shot dead by members of the Philippine Coast Guard aboard a surveillance ship.
The incident happened in the Balintang Channel, where the Philippines and Taiwan’s Exclusive Economic Zones overlap.
At the time, the incident strained the diplomatic relations between Manila and Taipei, affecting the livelihood of overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan.

Fri, 19 Jul 2024 - 16min - 91 - Bodies Dumped in a Well: The Robbery-Slaying of Kevin and Lolly Fleischauer (2015)
In the province of Negros Occidental, the bodies of 58-year-old Kevin Fleischauer, a former US Navy, and his Filipina wife, 60-year-old Lolly, were found inside a 20-feet deep well near their home after being missing for over two weeks.
Their fellow church members at Open Door Baptist Church had been worried about the couple after not hearing from them for over a week. With the help of authorities, they were led to a well that was emitting a strong, foul odor.
As they initially suspected, the authorities found the bodies of Kevin and Lolly Fleischauer in the well.
Upon inspection of the couple’s residence, it became more glaring that the motive behind the killings was robbery.

Fri, 05 Jul 2024 - 11min - 90 - The Tragic Kentex Fire: 72 People Killed (2015)
The Philippines has its fair share of infamous tragedies linked to fires throughout its history. From the 1980s till the 2010s, there have been tragedies caused by fire every decade, which features cases with 70 or more casualties.
These incidents are the infamous MV Doña Paz Tragedy in 1987 with 4,000 casualties, the Ozone Disco Fire in 1996 that killed 162 people, the Manor Hotel blaze in 2001 that caused 75 people's lives, and the Kentex Factory Fire in 2015, which took away the lives of 74 workers.
Though most of these tragedies have a strong following at the time, the terrifying Kentex Factory Fire is a story that also needs to be revisited.
On May 13, 2015, the Kentex Manufacturing Company Building located in Valenzuela City, Metro Manila, was on fire due to welding sparks that ignited the chemicals used to make flip-flops and rubber shoes.
Thick, black smoke covered the building as rubber and chemicals burned. Sadly, the fire started near the factory entrance, which made it impossible for those trapped inside to get out alive. Unable to leave, trapped workers fled to the second floor and attempted to contact their relatives for help.
The blaze spread quickly, and only a few people escaped.

Have you ever accidentally bumped into someone that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation?
There have been various incidents in the past caused by accidental bumps in public places such as concerts, bars, malls, and other social gathering events that have been the reason for physical fights, and some have led to people killing one another.
The victim in our episode for today, 28-year-old overseas Filipino worker and cruise ship photographer Gino Basas, was killed in a bar in Tomas Morato, Quezon City, after bumping into a male college student with toxic masculinity issues.

Fri, 07 Jun 2024 - 11min - 88 - The Tragic Accident of Ryan and Jen Ambrosio (2024)
On a Saturday night last January 6, 2024, 45-year-old Ryan Ambrosio and 43-year-old Jennifer Ambrosio, a Filipino couple and parents of six children in Michigan, were on their way home from a date night.
As they were cruising through the Lodge Freeway near the Civic Center Drive in Southfield at around 1:30 am, a vehicle going the wrong way crashed into them, tragically leading to the demise of Ryan and Jen.
The culprit, 35-year-old Angel Melendez-Ortiz, was evading police at the time. In order to lose them, he decided to drive on the wrong side of the freeway with the headlights of his stolen vehicle turned off.
It is when he tragically collided with the vehicle of the Ambrosios, seriously injuring himself and his 29-year-old unnamed female companion.

Fri, 26 Apr 2024 - 7min - 87 - The Gruesome Murder of Jullebee Ranara in Kuwait (2023)
As you probably heard, 35-year-old Jullebee Ranara, a Filipina who had to move to Kuwait to make ends meet and support her family as a domestic worker, was brutally killed in 2023.
She was tortured, raped, and murdered. As if this grueling ordeal was not enough, Jullebee's heartless perpetrator even burnt her body, threw his victim in the desert, and ran her over with a vehicle.
Based on a report from Vice World News, there are over 268,000 Filipinos currently working in Kuwait, most of which consist of domestic workers.
The Kafala system governs migrant workers in Kuwait, and various human rights group says that the Kafala system is a legal framework utilized in most Gulf states that authorizes employers to have full control over the legal status of migrant workers.
Unfortunately, Jullebee Ranara's gruesome murder is not the first incident that happened to a Filipino in Kuwait. This recent incident appears to have caused a ton of frustration in how the Kuwaitis view less of Filipinos. It is unacceptable and should not be tolerated by the international community.

Fri, 12 Apr 2024 - 14min - 86 - Beheadings: The Stories Behind the Gruesome Murders of Alfredo Tabing (2023) and Rosa Asilo (2024)
There have been infamous crimes in the Philippines that have happened during the holiday season.
A particular case that comes to mind is the heartless killing of mother-and-son Sonya and Frank Gregorio from Tarlac. Former policeman Jonel Nuezca had a verbal altercation with the Gregorios after the former policeman was arresting Frank for illegal possession of "Boga," an improvised noisemaker cannon. Sonya, his mother, came to her son's aid, and the altercation with Nuezca promptly escalated.
Nuezca ended up shooting both victims, and it became one of the most infamous crimes in 2020.
Three holiday seasons later, we noticed two separate peculiar cases that happened during the week of Christmas 2023 and New Year 2024.
What's bizarre about these cases was the gruesome nature that the two victims had gone through on separate occasions, where the culprits behind their killings beheaded the victims.
Given that these gruesome cases are similar, we decided to cover both crimes in one episode, a first of its kind in our show.

Fri, 08 Mar 2024 - 14min - 85 - The Assassination of Mayor Rose Furigay (2022)
Violence in Philippine politics, especially in this modern era, has been a serious issue that has continued to hinder the country's path to political maturity, therefore raising more doubts about an ineffective justice system that is slow and, in other instances, can be bought by influential and powerful clans.
However, the subject of our episode today involves a troubled medical professional who went to great lengths to seek revenge.
On July 24, 2022, in what was supposed to be one of the most eventful occasions a family could have in their lifetime, former Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay was attending her daughter Hannah's law school graduation at Ateneo De Manila University.
Bypassing campus security was Dr. Chao-Tiao Yumol, who was armed with a .45-caliber pistol, managed to get close to his target and ended up killing the former mayor, her executive assistant, Victor George Capistrano, and a campus security guard, Jeneven Bandiala, who risked his life attempting to stop the assailant.
The former mayor's daughter, Hannah, was also shot but was able to survive.

Sat, 14 Oct 2023 - 17min - 82 - Richard Speck: The Massacre of Eight Nurses from the South Chicago Community Hospital (1966)
We've seen that one iconic scene in horror movies before—the protagonist, either being chased or needing to hide, goes under their bed, trying their best to stay quiet as the killer roams around. Some survive, but some end up getting dragged away from under the bed... to their death. Fortunately for a Filipina nurse named Corazon Amurao, almost the exact scene happened to her in real life in 1966. She survived Chicago's most infamous mass murderer, Richard Speck. Fri, 06 Oct 2023 - 13min - 81 - Jealousy Gone Too Far: The Murder of Pearl and Baby Denzel Sta. Ana (2016)
Richard Sta. Ana, a father and loving husband, sought justice for his wife, Pearl, and their son, Baby Denzel, after two assailants brutally killed them by mercilessly bludgeoning their heads at their residence in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
As the investigators looked for answers, they surprisingly found out that the person behind the gruesome murder was someone they already knew from the start who was holding a grudge because of jealousy.
This case in 2016 might have been one of the most overlooked murder cases ever.
A mother and her baby boy were gruesomely murdered on a typical afternoon inside their residence. It is not something we get to hear or read on the news on a daily basis.

Fri, 25 Aug 2023 - 15min - 80 - Chop-Chop Lady in Antipolo City: The Gruesome Murder of Lanie Loreto (2023)
Chop-chop body cases in the Philippines are one of the most discussed topics in true crime, especially here in the Philippines.
Most fans of our show would send us episode requests through DMs and polls urging us to cover more chop-chop body cases.
In fact, our episodes relating to body dismemberments, particularly the gruesome murders of Lyndon Masinsin in 2017 and Elsa Castillo in 1993, were among the most played episodes in our library.
Now, another chop-chop lady case has caught our attention, and it happened recently.
On June 9, 2023, dismembered body parts, such as the head, arms, and legs of a woman, were found by scavengers under a bridge and in a ravine in Barangay Dela Paz, Antipolo City.
Subsequently, authorities found the victim's remaining body parts in a ravine in Barangay San Jose, 10 kilometers from where the victim was first seen.

Fri, 11 Aug 2023 - 9min - 79 - The Deadliest Air Disaster in the Philippines: Air Philippines Flight 541 (2000)
Air disasters are one of the most heartbreaking tragedies that will always catch our attention. Probably you've heard of numerous of these cases, such as the infamous 9/11 terrorist attack on the US World Trade Center, the mysterious disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, and many others.
Such incidents make us wonder are there plane-related tragedies that have also happened in the Philippines?
Sadly, there is.
On April 19, 2000, Air Philippines Flight 541 from Manila, bound for Davao City, crashed in a coconut plantation on Samal Island near the plane's destination.
All 131 people on board, including passengers and the aircraft's seven-member crew, died, making this catastrophic incident by far the worst air disaster in the Philippines.

Fri, 28 Jul 2023 - 11min - 78 - Police Brutality: The Attempted Murder of Roger Herrero (2018)
Our show usually features cases where the victim is already confirmed dead. While plenty of tragic cases still need to be told, a specific case caught our attention.
The incident happened on November 1, 2018, in Atimonan, Quezon, where the victim, Roger Herrero, a pedicab driver from the town of Agdangan, was falsely accused of a crime he didn't commit.
Rogue policemen hunted down Roger, bringing him to a dark area in Atimonan, an hour away from Agdangan. From there, Roger was forced to admit to various robbery cases in his town, but the policemen ended up shooting him in the head.
Roger, who was lying in a pool of his blood at the time, had to play dead till the rogue policemen left. Miraculously, the gunshot to his head wasn't fatal enough to kill him.

Up to this day, nobody knows the real identity behind D.B. Cooper or whether he’s still alive or not. He just mysteriously vanished.

Fri, 14 Apr 2023 - 12min - 72 - Foreshadowed Death: The Tragic Accident that Killed Arvin “Tado” Jimenez (2014)
There have been various instances across the globe in which a person had predicted their eventual death.
A brief google search would show you that some notable celebrities and artists had also bizarrely predicted their demise, which in some cases were nerve-rackingly accurate.
Sadly, you will find the name of the late comedian and activist Arvin "Tado" Jimenez on the list of famous individuals who had foreshadowed their own death.
Before Tado's sudden demise, he posted two Instagram posts that were somewhat eerily captioned, which most people thought of it as a premonition to Tado's time on earth was running out.
On February 7, 2014, Tado was among the 14 people that died after the bus they rode bound for Bontoc, Mountain Province, fell into a ravine.
Today, March 24, is Tado's birthday.

Tania Camille Dee was reported missing on June 21, 2015. The day before, she went out to meet her estranged ex-husband, Fidel Sheldon Arcenas, citing that the latter promised to give her money to purchase a car as a present so she and their two children could have a vehicle to use.

Fri, 10 Mar 2023 - 20min - 70 - The Tragic “CloseUp Forever Summer” Incident (2016)
The use and distribution of illegal substances have been an ongoing problem since drug cartels figured out how to grow their syndicates into multimillion-dollar empires.
Drug syndicates thrive on their customers’ addiction caused by narcotics, which has become a very dangerous cycle that doesn’t seem to end.
In a generation where rave parties have been a massive occurrence for social events, it is well-documented across the globe that many people, particularly teenagers and young adults, take party drugs while participating in rave parties.
But what happens if a person or group mistakenly consumes a party drug that an average human body couldn’t withstand?
An example of this happened during the 2016 Closeup Forever Summer Concert held at the Mall of Asia concert grounds with more than 15,000 people in attendance.
Tragically, five people who didn't know each other were reported to have bizarrely collapsed minutes apart at different venue areas.
As soon as the initial autopsy reports came out, the results shocked the entire nation, exposing drug-related personalities from privileged families with political connections that later turned on each other.

On November 18, 2009, one of the most controversial road rage incidents and manhunts of the 2000s happened in the Philippines.
The victim, in this case, was Renato Ebarle Jr., a son of a former presidential chief of Staff, Renato Ebarle Sr. He was shot and killed by Jason Ivler, a nephew of singer and songwriter Freddie Aguilar.
Witnesses saw the suspect go over to his victim's car and shoot him multiple times after a traffic altercation at the corner of Boni Serrano Street and Ortigas Avenue, Quezon City.
With various witnesses pinpointing Jason Ivler as the killer, he became one of the most wanted criminals at the time, in what others may argue was one of the most infamous manhunts in the Philippines.
Authorities and news outlets began their due diligence in figuring out who Jason Ivler was, and what they found out was shockingly outrageous.

Hostage-taking situations are one of the most discussed cases in the Philippines. After all, most of these kinds of incidents in the country conclude very badly and, in other instances, deadly.
The incident at the Taguig Hall of Justice in 2007 caught the entire country’s attention as a movie stuntman, and his common-law-wife held four people hostage for an entire day, ironically, inside a place where people expect justice.
Hostages were punched, kicked, and pistol-whipped; hostage-takers were seen looking for ways to escape, and the SWAT team’s operations were nationally-televised. Indeed, the incident was filled with drama, confusion, and twists.

Have you watched the hit horror movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose? If yes, have you ever wondered if someone from the Philippines has experienced the same thing or even worse?
Well, if you have, the story of Clarita Villanueva comes to mind. She was a 17-year-old orphan from Bacolod that moved to Manila in the early 1950s to work as a maid at first, but after eloping with a man who turned out to be married, Clarita left him and ended up working as a prostitute in hopes of improving her living situation.
One night, Clarita mistakenly offered sexual services to an undercover police officer. She was promptly arrested and detained at the 300-year-old Bilibid Prison in Manila, which had a lot of unpleasant memories, a place with a considerable amount of detainees who have suffered and died through the years.
Little did the people back then know that the Old Bilibid Prison would also be where the infamous demonic possession of Clarita Villanueva happened.

Fri, 07 Oct 2022 - 0min - 59 - The Murders at the Cabading Family Residence (1961)
On January 18, 1961, one of the most infamous murders in the 1960s jolted the entire nation after news reports came out about a policeman who committed suicide after shooting his very own wife, daughter, and son-in-law.
This story features the Cabading family murders. It was a tragic case of a father's wrath that turned into a deadly rampage. Pablo Cabading, the father, persuaded Lydia, his daughter, and Leonardo Quitangon, his son-in-law, to stay and live at his residence on Zapote Street located in Makati, which was then part of Rizal province.
What seemed like adjusting to a father-in-law's eccentricities turned out to be more than that, as Pablo was a very difficult person to deal with. He refused to let his daughter and her husband live freely on their own, so to keep the family intact, blinded by rage, he ended up murdering his family.

What makes this case peculiar is that the victim was able to snap a photo of his family seconds before the suspect pulled the trigger on him.

On July 10, 2001, a Filipino family of three was found murdered inside their residence in North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia. Initial reports suggest that the crime was racially motivated.
However, further investigations say otherwise and their findings would later on shock the entire country that was almost fooled by the killer.
The case was already complicated from the very start, as they had no other witnesses aside from Sef Gonzales’ (the only living member of the Gonzales family) testimony.

Fri, 26 Nov 2021 - 39min - 37 - The Disappearance of Primitivo Mijares and Torture-Slaying of Boyet Mijares (1977)
In January 1977, Primitivo “Tibo” Mijares, a journalist and former chief propagandist of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, suddenly disappeared.
Tibo left the Marcos regime in 1974 and went to the United States, where he had issued a defection statement, vowing to tell the lies and atrocities that the Marcoses had done during his time of service. From 1974 to 1977, the former Marcos confidant made headlines due to his prior knowledge regarding the devious wrong-doings that the Marcoses were currently practicing at the time.
Four months after Tibo's disappearance, his youngest son, 16-year-old Luis Manuel “Boyet” Mijares, was found dead in the mountains of Antipolo, Rizal. Nearby residents at the scene claimed that Boyet was thrown off from a military helicopter passing by the area.

Fri, 29 Oct 2021 - 22min - 35 - Filipina Found Inside A Freezer: The Gruesome Murder of Joanna Demafelis (2016)
One of the most gruesome murders towards an overseas Filipino worker happened in 2016 when authorities from Kuwait discovered the body of a missing Filipina placed in a freezer at an abandoned apartment. The gruesome discovery of her remains sent shockwaves across the overseas Filipino community. It caused public outrage back in the Philippines.
Joanna Daniela Demafelis was a 29-year-old OFW who flew to Kuwait in 2014, hoping to find work and provide her family with a bright future. Unfortunately, she never made it back to the Philippines after encountering a ruthless husband and wife in Kuwait that heartlessly ended her life.
PH Murder Stories would like to dedicate this story to the millions of overseas Filipino workers discriminated against and treated as low-class citizens in other countries. "The dead cannot cry out for justice. It is a duty of the living to do so for them."

Fri, 22 Oct 2021 - 20min - 34 - The Murder of British-Filipina Caroline Crouch in Greece (2021)
On May 11, 2021, 20-year-old British-Filipina Caroline Crouch was found dead in the attic of her own home in Glyka Nera, Greece, after her husband, 33-year-old Babis Anagnostopoulos, initially claimed that three men barged inside their home, tied him up, tortured, and killed his wife in front of their 11-month-old baby girl named Lydia, and stole £30,000 British pounds worth of cash and jewelry.
This case gained international attention due to an alleged robbing incident that included the heartless act of killing a woman in front of her family. It makes us wonder how three men who overpowered Caroline's family of three would need to kill her if they only planned to rob them?
Nevertheless, the incident alarmed the Greek police, who vowed to discover what truly happened to the young Filipina mother.

On May 31, 2002, a supposedly typical day at the Philtranco Pasay City Bus Terminal turned wicked when a drug-crazed man named Diomedes Talbo suddenly grabbed Dexter Balala, a four-year-old boy, and held him, hostage, with a 10-inch double-bladed knife pointed to his neck.
Coming from a two-week vacation in the province of Camarines Sur, the young boy was about to ride a bus with his mother, Salvacion Balala, going to Pampanga when the suspect grabbed him away and seized his custody.

Fri, 24 Sep 2021 - 13min - 31 - The Untold Story Behind The Killing of Benedicto Hernandez in 1994 (Case Suggestion)
We would like to thank Mr. Ben Hernandez for sharing with us the story behind his father's gruesome killing in 1994. Kuya Ben messaged us on Instagram last February 2021 and told us about the revelations he recently learned about his father's killing after reconnecting with his relatives in 2019. For more than two decades, Kuya Ben did not know much about his father's case. He only knew back then that his father was killed but was vastly unaware of the reasons and the people behind his horrific slaying. On the evening of March 10, 1994, a tragedy struck Benedicto (Kuya Ben's father) when two men invaded his home and robbed him of his valuables. Unfortunately, the perpetrators weren't content with just stealing the victim's valuables. They ended up killing him.

Fri, 10 Sep 2021 - 16min - 30 - The Payatas Tragedy (2000)
On July 10, 2000, a mountain of rain-loosed garbage collapsed and turned into flames, burying a housing site in Barangay Payatas in Quezon City. The incident caused the death of as many as one thousand individuals and the destruction of about a hundred houses.
According to official records, around 260 deaths were reported, and around 300 persons were missing, while 655 families were rendered homeless due to the incident. However, other sources insist that 705 people died in Payatas, and many first-hand accounts note the figure is far greater than the official count, perhaps closer to 1,000.

On January 7, 2020, an alleged high-value drug dealer from Spain, and a surfer residing on the island of Siargao, was killed by authorities at his home amid an illegal drugs operation. The police claimed that they acted in self-defense after the suspect fired gunshots against the agents that were apprehending him. However, his family and friends from Spain suggest that a powerful politician was behind the killing.
Diego Bello Lafuente was only 32-years-old when the police took away his life. He was a soccer player and a surfing enthusiast.

A large suitcase was found floating near North Harbor, Tondo, Manila, on August 16, 2007. After retrieving the suitcase, the witnesses opened a case that would later shock the entire country. They found the decomposing body of a young girl stuffed inside the bag. The authorities went through a rigorous challenge to positively identify the body as seven-year-old Geraldine Palma. She was reportedly abducted on August 11, 2007.
In a confusing turn of events, Julieta Salvatierra, the mother of Jessalyn, another missing girl, came forward to the police and claimed that the body found inside the large suitcase was her daughter. The nature of this crime, as well as the confusion within the investigation, sparked public outrage on the police’s lack of assertiveness and the gruesome circumstances that Geraldine Palma went through.

Fri, 09 Jul 2021 - 28min - 26 - The Slaying of Jennifer Laude - Part 2
The Olongapo Regional Trial Court Branch 74 convicted US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton guilty of homicide. He was sentenced to six to 12 years imprisonment, but the camp of slain transgender woman Jennifer Laude took it as a “bittersweet” ruling.
The court ruled that the killing of Laude amounted only to homicide and did not meet the standards for murder because Pemberton acted out of "passion and obfuscation."
Still, persecution lawyer Harry Roque disagreed, saying, "It is not right that these mitigating circumstances showed his bigotry towards a transgender woman and that the bigotry itself was the reason he killed her."
However, President Rodrigo Duterte exercised one of his special powers as a chief executive in the Philippines and shocked everyone when he granted the convicted killer an absolute pardon.

Fri, 11 Jun 2021 - 19min - 24 - Hacienda Luisita Massacre - Part 2
As PH Murder Stories dig deeper on the truths that matter on this case, we found a 2016 Rappler article as the latest reference of updates. In the said news report entitled “12 years on, still no justice for Hacienda Luisita massacre victims”, no trial has brought the victims justice as of the date of the writing. In 2010, at the helm of President Corazon's only son, President Benigno Aquino III, the Ombudsman dismissed the charges against the uniformed people implicated in the violent dispersal. In a 45-page confidential report obtained by the Rappler that is said to be the basis of the Ombudsman's decision, “it showed that sworn statements from protesters were more consistent and believable than the sworn statements of police, military, and Department of Labor and Employment personnel.”

Fri, 21 May 2021 - 16min - 23 - Hacienda Luisita Massacre - Part 1
Last November 16, 2004, 14 people were killed in a bloody protest in Hacienda Luisita, including two children aged 2 and 5 who died from suffocation from teargas thrown by police and army dispersal teams. After being wounded, one of the victims was reportedly strangled and his dead body hanging at the factory's gate. At least 35 people have been confirmed to have suffered gunshot wounds, 133 have been arrested and held, hundreds have been hospitalized, and another hundred were missing. The devastation is a horrific reminder of the notorious Mendiola massacre and the massacre of Lupao, which both emerged from the demands of the peasants to own their land.

A handful of legislators opened an inquiry into Espinosa’s death in Manila. Jovie attended. It ended inconclusively days later. As Jovie left the hall, he received a call from a PNP director. “Jovie,” the voice crackled. “I will assign you to Ozamiz.” On December 8, 2016, Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido announced his transfer to Ozamiz City. In a text message, Espenido said, “Please kindly include me in your prayers for my new assignment in Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, Region 10.”
Ozamiz City was disorganized. It was filthy, and trash piled on almost every street corner. Cars were disorderly parked. Squatting was prevalent. The downtown was hush and dusty as if they were preparing for war. But the situation is clear for Espenido: the business was dead. The Parojinogs had killed Ozamis. And he has one mission to fulfill, as he said, “My mission in Ozamiz City is to get the Parojinogs who was reportedly one of the “biggest” drug lords in Mindanao.”

Fri, 05 Feb 2021 - 17min - 12 - The Surprising Death and Story of “New Bilibid King” Jaybee Sebastian - Part 2
Jaybee Sebastian pleaded guilty in arraignment for charges of conspiring with De Lima and five others to drug trade at the NBP compound during the legislator’s term as justice secretary. De Lima, meanwhile, was not surprised with the move saying Sebastian has been pressured by Duterte's operators to falsely testify against her in exchange for his and his family's safety. With these reforms for prisoners, the National Bilibid Prison has reported that over 17,000 inmates have agreed to renounce their gang affiliations which gradually dismantles the gang system that has thrived in the national penitentiary for decades.

Sat, 12 Dec 2020 - 15min - 6 - The Abduction and Killing of Jee Ick-Joo - Part 4
In a bid to fix diplomatic relations, President Duterte apologized to South Korea during a meeting with potential investors on January 26, 2017.
Surprisingly, the case took an unfortunate turn of events when Judge Buan granted bail for Rafael Dumlao, citing the lack of evidence. The alleged mastermind of the Jee-Ick Joo kidnap-murder case was allowed to post bail worth 300,000 pesos for each of the three cases filed against him. During the same time, the court denied the bail petitions of his co-accused Sta. Isabel and Omlang.

The kidnap and murder of Jee-Ick Joo at the hands of the Philippine National Police are among the most significant controversies to hit in the country during President Duterte's controversial War on Drugs. Jee-Ick Joo, a South Korean businessman, and Marisa Morquicho, the house helper, were abducted together with Jee's Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) from his home in Friendship Plaza Subdivision, Angeles City, Pampanga, on October 18, 2016.
