When Damone Brown enlisted in the US Army, the path to the Army's Special Forces was a rare journey for a black man. Few blacks existed across all military branches of Special Operations -Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Among the millions of brave black men who serve, less than four percent have broken into the elite Special Forces and even fewer have become Combat Divers.

Books about combat are compelling. There's an inherent thirst for the stories about brave men, completing impossible tasks under the worst of conditions. Cry Havoc tells the story of how the Army Rangers emerged from the shadow of the Vietnam War, and morphed themselves into what World War II hero and former commander of US forces in Vietnam General Creighton W. Abrams called, "the finest light infantry in the world." In October of 1983, those men would conduct the first mass combat parachute drop since Vietnam and do so under intense fire from Cuban and Grenadian forces.
Once the Rangers hit the ground, the action didn't stop. Over three days, they cleared the enemy from commanding positions overlooking the airfield, rescued over 400 US medical students, and conducted an air assault on an enemy training facility, an action that was considered a 'suicide mission'. And yet they accomplished all of their missions in the best tradition of their Ranger forefathers.

Born poor, he battled on the streets of the mining towns near Johannesburg; from orphanage to reformatory to warder on Pretoria Central’s ‘Death Row’. After a brush with the law, he went north to join the fight for Rhodesia, and served with distinction in the Grey Scouts, the RLI and then the SAS. Fighting ferociously to the bitter end, the politicians ended his war and he returned to his homeland to re-enter the fray with the Recces. Unorthodox in his methods, scornful of dogma, a rebel in their ranks, he rankled his seniors but was seldom far from the thick of the action. Attacking the enemy from the air, land and sea, he led from the front against the Russians, Cubans, Angolans and SWAPO. Like his mentor, Rhodesian SAS Captain Darrell Watt, the man he reveres, he was denied the recognition he deserved.

Charles “Chuck” Simpson has over 36 years’ experience as a Military/Security Advisor, beginning his career with 21 years in the U.S. Army, serving 8 years 82nd Airborne as an Infantryman, 2 years Long Range Surveillance Detachment (LRSD) 101st Airborne as an Reconnaissance Team Leader, and 11 Years Army Special Forces working in Central and South America. Mr. Simpson also served in the Special warfare Center at Fort Brag, NC, as an Advance Special Operation Techniques Instructor and Special Forces Sniper instructor. Chuck Continued his Career, once retired from the U.S. Army, Chuck was the principal advisor and consultant on ESI's PSD Protective Operations (PSD), Surveillance/Surveillance Detection (SSD) and Designed Defensive Marksman (DDM) training programs. Chuck developed the DDM Program, that ESI still uses to this date. 
 
Soon after 911, Chuck started a private security/military advisory company in 2002, Protect Consultant Inc., where he provided specialized military and security consulting to corporate clients, the U.S. government and security business owners.  Chuck served as an Independent Contractor for the Central Intelligence Agency, Special Operations Group (SOG) Special Activities Group (SAG) from 02/02 to 04/12, He conducted worldwide operations and training assignments abroad in the mission areas of special operations and counter terrorism.  Has served as lead instructor for, Foreign Military Special Operations, Foreign National Police, Counterterrorist, and Intelligence personnel, as lead instructor for DDM /Counter Sniper. 
 
Chuck provided Military and Protection Advisory for designated U.S. Government Agencies as a Tier 1 Operator. In earlier missions, Mr. Simpson served as a Military Advisor and Assault Force Team Leader within a forward deployed, reinforced, Special Operation Unit employed in the training of forces actively engaged in Combating Terrorism and Counter-Narcotics Operations. Mr. Simpson has provided Advanced Marksmanship, Close Quarters Combat and Advance Source Operation training to US and Foreign forces, throughout the world.

Daniel Corbett III served as an elite Navy SEAL operator, part of SEAL Teams 5, 6, and 17. He’s now an ex-military operator for hire. He joined the navy shortly after graduating high school in 2002 and was deployed to Iraq in the summer of 2005 with SEAL Team 5. He joined SEAL Team 6 in 2007, deploying to various locations around the world. In 2010, Daniel returned to the West Coast and began instructing at the Naval Special Warfare Basic Training Command (NSWBTC). Daniel ended his active-duty career after two years with NSWBTC and quickly fell into the world of private military contracting. Daniel joined the active reserves in 2014 and maintained his active reserve status until 2019. In 2017, Daniel made international news when he was thrown in jail in Belgrade, Serbia, for eighteen months after traveling there as a private contractor to track a terrorist financier. Daniel still monitors international news and continues to entertain phone calls and meetings with those who need unique solutions to unique problems.

Bill was born in Wuerzburg, Germany on October 22, 1970 at an Army Hospital. He enlisted in the
United States Army on 24 March 1993 and served his first four years with Company B, 3 rd Battalion,
75 th Ranger Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Benning, Georgia. After completing the Special Forces
Qualification Course in 1999, he was assigned to Company B, 1 st Battalion, 10 th Special Forces Group
(Airborne) at Panzer Kaserne, Germany.
From 1999 through 2004, Bill served in several positions on Special Forces Operational Detachments
Alpha (SFODA) 024 and 036, 1 st BN, 10 th SFG (A) culminating as a Senior Medical Sergeant and Cell
Leader. In May 2004, he joined Company D, 2 nd BN, 1 st Special Warfare Training Group (A) as a
Senior Instructor/Writer for the Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance Target Analysis and
Exploitation Techniques Course. Bill returned to Germany to serve in the Commander’s In-extremis
Force, CO C, 1 st BN 10 th SFG (A) for SFODA 0136. In July 2011 Bill became the Company
Operations Sergeant for the newly formed Crisis Response Force, CO C, 2 nd BN, 10 th SFG(A) at Fort
Carson, Colorado. He next served as the Group Operations Sergeant until selected as 1SG,
Headquarters Company where he served from November 2012 to May 2014.
In 2015 Bill became the Company Sergeant Major for Company A, 2 nd BN, 10 th SFG (A) for two years.
He then served as the NSOCC-A/SOJTF-A CJ3 SGM from November 2017 to September 2018. In
January 2019, Bill was appointed 2 nd BN, 7 th SFG (A) Command Sergeant Major. In 2020 Bill was
appointed as the Group Command Sergeant Major for 2 nd Special Warfare Training Group (A). In
January 2024 Bill retired after 30 years of service.
Bill participated in Operations JOINT GUARDIAN in Kosovo, JOINT FORGE and BOLERO in Bosnia,
IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN in Iraq, ENDURING FREEDOM – TRANS SAHARA, ODYSSEY

Robert Young Pelton is a Canadian-American author, journalist, and documentary film director. Pelton's work usually consists of conflict reporting and interviews with military and political figures in war zones. Pelton has been present at conflicts such as the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi in Afghanistan, the Battle of Grozny (1999–2000) in Chechnya, the rebel siege to take Monrovia in Liberia, and the siege on Villa Somalia in Mogadishu, and has been with ground forces in about 40 other conflicts. He spent time with the Taliban and the Northern Alliance pre-9/11, the CIA during the hunt for Osama bin Laden and also with both insurgents and Blackwater security contractors during the war in Iraq. Pelton's regularly published survival and political guide The World's Most Dangerous Places, provides practical and survival information for people who work and travel in high-risk zones, and is a New York Times bestseller.[8] He was also the host of the Discovery Travel Channel series entitled Robert Young Pelton's The World's Most Dangerous Places from 1998 to 2003. Now residing in Los Angeles, Pelton currently writes books and produces documentaries on conflict-related subjects and documentaries.

Jack is a 32-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency (“CIA”). Mr. Devine served as both Acting Director and Associate Director of CIA’s operations outside the United States from 1993-1995, where he had supervisory authority over thousands of CIA employees involved in sensitive missions throughout the world. In addition, he served as Chief of the Latin American Division from 1992-1993 and was the principal manager of the CIA’s sensitive projects in Latin America.
Between 1990 and 1992, Mr. Devine headed the CIA’s Counternarcotics Center, which was responsible for coordinating and building close cooperation between all major U.S. and foreign law enforcement agencies in tracking worldwide narcotics and crime organizations. From 1985-1987, Mr. Devine headed the CIA’s Afghan Task Force, which successfully countered Soviet aggression in the region. In 1987, he was awarded the CIA’s Meritorious Officer Award for this accomplishment.
Mr. Devine’s international experience with the U.S. government included postings to Latin America and Europe. During his more than 30 years with the CIA, Mr. Devine was involved in organizing, planning and executing countless sensitive projects in virtually all areas of intelligence, including analysis, operations, technology and management.

Alex Plitsas is a nonresident senior fellow with the Middle East Programs’ N7 Initiative, a partnership between the Atlantic Council and Jeffrey M. Talpins Foundation working to strengthen and deepen Arab-Israeli normalization. Additionally, he is currently a principal and industry director for aerospace and defense and high-tech electronics at Providence Consulting Group where he oversees and leads industry-focused teams who conduct business and digital-transformation projects for enterprise resource-planning software systems. Previously, Plitsas served as the director for strategic operations for a high-tech electronics company servicing the aerospace and defense industry and as a chief of staff at the world’s largest hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates. He completed his federal service as the chief of sensitive activities for special operations and combating terrorism in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he oversaw policy and operations for compartmented plans and programs. He was also detailed from the Pentagon to the Intelligence Community, representing the secretary of defense as a senior member of the White House Hostage Policy Review Team. Plitsas also worked as a strategic planner for the undersecretary of defense for intelligence, where he was deployed to Afghanistan. He also deployed twice to Iraq, once in uniform leading a psychological operations team during “the surge” and fighting in the Battle of Sadr City, and a second time as a civilian working in the Special Programs Office at United State Forces–Iraq Headquarters. Plitsas has also worked as a program manager and contractor for several tier-1 aerospace and defense companies, such as Northrop Grumman, in between stints in the federal government and military service.

Dante Paradiso is the current Director of the Office of East African Affairs and a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He most recently served as a Senior Advisor to the Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation, and immediately before that as Director for Peace and Reconciliation at US Embassy Kabul. In previous tours he has been Charge d’Affaires and Deputy Chief of Mission at US Embassy Libreville, Economic and Political Counselor at US Consulate Hong Kong, Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, and Brigade Senior Civilian Representative with Task Force Mountain Warrior and Task Force Bastogne in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. Dante has also had diplomatic assignments in Beijing, Ethiopia, Liberia, Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, and, as an intern political officer, Tanzania. Before joining the Foreign Service, Dante practiced bank regulatory law with Goodwin LLP in Boston. Dante is from New York. He received a BA from Yale University and a JD from UCLA School of Law. He is married to US diplomat Darragh Paradiso.

Eric Vélez-Villar was named assistant director of the Office of Private Sector in October 2021. The Office of Private Sector, under the FBI Intelligence Branch, strengthens partnerships between the FBI and the private sector. Mr. Vélez-Villar, a retired special agent, had most recently worked in the private sector. Mr. Vélez-Villar started his FBI career as a computer scientist in the San Juan Field Office in Puerto Rico. He became a special agent in 1992 and worked organized crime and drug cases in the McAllen Resident Agency of the San Antonio Field Office in Texas. He transferred to the San Juan office in 1997 and worked public corruption cases and violent crime. In 2000, Mr. Vélez-Villar was promoted to supervisory special agent in the Drug Section of the Criminal Investigative Division at FBI Headquarters. He was detailed to the Drug Enforcement Administration for two years. In 2002, he transferred to the Santa Ana Resident Agency of the Los Angeles Field Office, where he worked organized crime cases before he was reassigned to supervise the Orange County Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Mr. Vélez-Villar was promoted to assistant special agent in charge of the Los Angeles counterterrorism program in 2004, overseeing three regional JTTFs. Mr. Vélez-Villar was promoted to deputy director of the Terrorist Screening Center in 2006, then returned to Los Angeles as the special agent in charge of the office’s Intelligence Division in 2007. In 2009, he was named deputy assistant director in the Directorate of Intelligence at FBI Headquarters, in charge of the Intelligence Operations Branch. In 2012, he was promoted to assistant director of the Directorate of Intelligence and was elevated to executive assistant director of the Intelligence Branch in 2014. He retired in 2016 and served as a vice president for security at the Walt Disney Company. He also established a security consulting firm. Mr. Vélez-Villar earned a bachelor’s degree from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and an MBA from the University of Southern California.

Born and raised in Milwaukee Wisconsin, Rick joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. He attended Basic Underwater Demolition SEAL (BUD/S) training Class 109 in Coronado, CA. Rick was assigned to SEAL Team TWO in Little Creek, VA in 1980. He served at SEAL Team TWO from 1980 until 1985, specializing in winter warfare, combat diving, and sniping until he was selected for duty at SEAL Team SIX in 1985.
In 1993, Rick received the Silver Star Medal for Valor during the Battle of Mogadishu (Black Hawk Down). He served at ST-6 from 1985 through October of 2012. During his time at ST-6, Rick acted as sniper, explosives expert, lead training Chief, sniper team leader, and Deputy Operations Officer.
Rick continues to serve his country and fellow SEALs by helping to educate others about this unique special operations force and further the Frogman heritage as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum. Rick is married to Barbara Kaiser and has two children, Emily and Eric. Rick and Barbara currently reside in Vero Beach,

Melvyn had a 24-year military career, in which he served with distinction. Born and bred in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, Melvyn left school at 16 years old and joined the army. In 1991, he led his patrol into combat in the first Gulf war and completed three tours of duty in Northern Ireland, in charge of a platoon of 30 men. Melvyn joined the elite special forces in 1994. I joined the US Navy in 1964.  After training I served at Naval Air Station, Litchfield Park, just outside of Phoenix, Arizona.  After a year there I was sent to the USS Arlington AGMR2 for pre commissioning of the ship.  The time went on so I served on Yard Tug boat's in Norfolk, Virginia, then I served for a couple of month's on the USS Denebola AF56 (Refrigeration ship)  When I returned to Norfolk I decided to put in for Vietnam and was sent to DaNang, Vietnam.  After 22 month's I was discharged and then joined the US Army, Special Forces.  I went through Basic infantry, then advanced infantry (graduated as the honor student) then I went to jump school in Ft. Benning, Georgia. Then up to Ft. Bragg for Special Forces training.  I asked to go back to Vietnam and did.  I was sent to A-502, 5th SFGp Abn, out of NaTrang, Vietnam.  I was the NCOIC of a CIDG camp 554, Sui Dou.  Then after after 6 month's or so, the camp closed down so I went to SOA-CCC (MACV-SOG)  I was 1-1 of Rt. Delaware for one mission then became the 1-0 (team leader)  I ran 7 mission's (4 linear recon and 3 brightlight missions) in Laos or Cambodia.  After my 7th mission I was asked if I wanted to go to SOA-B53 and teach Special Op's mission's.  I said ok and went to B-53 for an additional 6 month's.  Then I was discharged and came home and joined the 12th SFGpAbn (reserves).  In 1978 I did a cross service transfer to the 129th ARRS, USAF Pararescue. I left the Army as an E-8 and dropped to E-6 in the USAF.  After completing  Pararescue school, I was a PJ.  I was a rescue, parachuting paramedic for the first 3 launches of the Space Shuttle (STS-1, 2 and 3) also for the Mt. St. Helens Volcano eruption.  President Carter and Senator Ted Kennedy.  Also did 2 parachute rescue mission's for ship's at sea and a few hoist mission's.  After an injury parachuting, I was medically discharged from the service.  I had 20 year in service so I got out and went to college to become a Doctor (Radiologist)  I did this for 20 years and now I hunt, sell and collect meteorite's.

Matt Brazil is a Senior Analyst at BluePath Labs and a Senior Fellow at The Jamestown Foundation. He pursued Chinese studies as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, as an Army officer with tours in Korea and NSA, and as a graduate student at Harvard in their Regional Studies East Asia program. After a stint as the China specialist for the Commerce Department’s Office of Export Enforcement, he was assigned as a Commercial Officer with the US Embassy, Beijing, where he both promoted and controlled US high technology exports to China. Afterward, Matt spent 20 years as a security professional, performing investigations in China for a chip manufacturer, and leading the development of a security organization in China for an American specialty chemicals firm. His PhD dissertation at the University of Sydney (2013) described the place in the Chinese Communist Party of their intelligence organs. That and further research led to his contribution as the coauthor of Chinese Communist Espionage, An Intelligence Primer (2019). Matt is also the author of the China chapter in the Handbook of Asian Intelligence Cultures (2022). His next book concerns Beijing’s contemporary worldwide espionage and influence offensive.

Phil Campion was given up for adoption at birth. He ended up with violent adoptive parents and was sent to a series of children's homes. Jay Dorleus joined the military in 2003 as a 12B combat engineer and completed basic training and AIT in July 2003. In 2003, Jay deployed in support of Iraqi freedom and redeployed in 2004. After his second Iraq deployment, Jay applied to attend Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) and was selected to attend the qualification course. Once he graduated the qualification course, Jay was assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group where he deployed 4 additional times in support of operations enduring freedom.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy in 2010, Alejandro went on to become a professional football player for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens. After majoring in Systems Engineering at the Academy, Alejandro was commissioned a 2LT in the Engineer Branch with a branch detail in the Infantry. During his five years of service, Alejandro served as a Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer. His service included a deployment to Afghanistan with 10th Mountain Division and two deployments with 1st Ranger Battalion. In 2010, 2012, and 2014 Alejandro tried out for different NFL teams aspiring to land on a roster. After failed attempts with the Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears, and Philadelphia Eagles, Alejandro made the final 53 man roster in 2015 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. During his seven-year career in Pittsburgh he made 100 starts and was selected to two Pro Bowls while completing an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. Born in Meridian, Mississippi to Spanish parents, Alejandro currently resides in Miami, Florida. Fluent in Spanish, French, and Portuguese, Alejandro spends his free time with family and enjoys fishing.

Jack is a 32-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency (“CIA”). Mr. Devine served as both Acting Director and Associate Director of CIA’s operations outside the United States from 1993-1995, where he had supervisory authority over thousands of CIA employees involved in sensitive missions throughout the world. In addition, he served as Chief of the Latin American Division from 1992-1993 and was the principal manager of the CIA’s sensitive projects in Latin America.
Between 1990 and 1992, Mr. Devine headed the CIA’s Counternarcotics Center, which was responsible for coordinating and building close cooperation between all major U.S. and foreign law enforcement agencies in tracking worldwide narcotics and crime organizations. From 1985-1987, Mr. Devine headed the CIA’s Afghan Task Force, which successfully countered Soviet aggression in the region. In 1987, he was awarded the CIA’s Meritorious Officer Award for this accomplishment.
Mr. Devine’s international experience with the U.S. government included postings to Latin America and Europe. During his more than 30 years with the CIA, Mr. Devine was involved in organizing, planning and executing countless sensitive projects in virtually all areas of intelligence, including analysis, operations, technology and management.

Mr. William Flavin is currently an independent consultant on peace and stabilization. For the past 19 years he was a department of defense civilian at the Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute. Previous he was the Assistant Director at the US Army Peacekeeping Institute in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Mr. Flavin assisted PKSOI with the implementation of its Joint Proponent responsibilities in peace and stability operations coordinating with Department of Defense, Department of State and USAID. Additionally, he assisted with advancing the US Governments United Nations initiatives by working with the key member states as well as NGOs and International Forums. Previously he was a senior foreign affairs analyst with Booz Allen and Hamilton on contract to assist the Peacekeeping Institute in doctrine development. Prior to this assignment, he was a Colonel in the US Army serving as the Deputy Director of Special Operations for the Supreme Allied Commander Europe at the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) from June 1995 to June 1999. Mr. Flavin served in the US Army for 31 years in Infantry and Special Forces where he has had extensive experience in planning and executing at the Strategic and Operational level. He has participated in many of the key operations from Viet Nam through the Balkans. He was the Special Operations Chair at the US Army War College from 1991 to 1995 and prior to that serve of the staffs of the Officer of the Secretary of Defense and Department of the Army.

Daniel Runyon grew up running around in the backwoods of Illinois. He had a successful high school and Division III college football career. His real passion, however, turned out to be the U.S. Army; a passion he turned into a distinguished career as a Special Forces Commander.
Dan’s moving from the enlisted ranks into the officer corps, at a relatively old age was considered a bold choice and set him apart from other leaders. He would go on to command Special Forces assault teams in Afghanistan and Iraq after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 – 9/11. He ultimately rose in the ranks to command his own Special Forces Company in Iraq.
After his service was complete, Dan moved to Colorado and established Runyon Training Concepts, a high mountain training camp he built from scratch. His programs conditioned professional and non-pro athletes and extreme outdoorsmen and women to conquer the elements and exceed their limits.
He currently lives in Florida with his dogs, spending time with his three grown children and training for his next adventure.

Bush and Barack Obama administrations. Earlier in his career, he served as a CIA Operations Officer and Special Forces Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer. As the ASD SO/LIC&IC and USD(I), he had a central role in developing our strategy and overseeing our campaigns to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al-Qa’ida and in the operation to kill Usama Bin Ladin. As a CIA officer during the 1980s, he was the program officer and principal strategist for the largest and most successful covert action program in CIA’s history, enabling the Afghan resistance to drive the Soviets out of Afghanistan.
He is a recipient of the Presidential National Security Medal, our nation’s highest award in intelligence. He has a Ph.D. in International Relations/Strategic Studies from Johns Hopkins, an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Alabama.

CW4 (R) Greg Coker served 22 years in the U.S. Army, 15 years as an AH-6 “Little Bird” attack helicopter instructor pilot who was specially recruited, assessed, and selected in the Army’s only Special Operations Helicopter unit, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. He was one of the senior Lead Instructor Pilots and planner responsible for planning and executing special operations missions in support of our nation’s most elite special operations units. Achieved 7400 hours of accident free flying, over 6200 hours of Night Vision Goggles and 1500 hours of Combat time.
Supervised and directed teams of up to 300 soldiers in the planning and execution of numerous complex combat operations at the Joint Task Force level. Responsible for leading and planning scores of real world combat missions with significant tactical, operational, and strategic value during Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom with 100% success in support of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) conducting 11 combat tours 2001-2008.

John Dovey is a South African army veteran with 35 years of service. He also has extensive experience in ITC, including 10 years as Assistant Director of the University of Stellenbosch library, where he was responsible for IT, Knowledge Management, and Online Learning initiatives. He had his final deployment in 2013/14 as Combat Demolitions Team Leader for the South African Battalion that formed one-third of the Force Intervention Brigade under the auspices of the UN MONUSCO mission.
