Susan reminisces about her first flight in an aircraft taking her out to America to join an oil tanker and begin her career as a merchant navy deck cadet. It was not without its problems.

Peter Heslop joins Susan in this episode talking about the changes that we are all becoming aware of, financial pressures experienced by a broad spectrum of individuals,  and the need for support to help with living expenses. He is the Community Manager at Richmond's Influence Church whose staff and willing volunteers are doing sterling work supporting those in need, supplying food parcels, baby bundles, and school uniforms.

As Peter stated " The definition of poverty has shifted!" and the demographic of those turning up recently has changed. With recent price rises even those in full time work are finding it hard to manage, some are facing the choice between eating and heating their homes and we're not even into winter yet. 

Regular food parcel collections are at the Influence church on Thursday evenings, with  the regular time slots between 6 and 8pm. They also hand out advice and can point you towards relevant sources of assistance in these difficult times. As Peter told us, noone who arrives at their door needing help goes away empty handed.

This episode features Debbie North, founder of Access the Dales, who, since becoming a wheelchair user, has campaigned tirelessly to break down barriers in all aspects of promoting accessibility for all.

After discovering in 2008 that she needed spinal surgery and fearing that she would never be able to walk on the fells again Debbie initially became despondent. Coping with such a changed life now confined to her wheelchair she began writing a blog about the challenges she was facing and called it Access the Dales. This prompted an offer from a friend to get her up to Goredale Scar in her wheelchair and that then inspired Debbie and her husband Andy to begin more challenges and start, as they called it, "making the inaccessible accessible".

A coast to coast walk, St Bees to Robin Hoods Bay in 2015 was a huge achievement with Debbie in an All Terrain Hopper and resulted in a book about their journey-  In the spirit of Wainwright.They had walked the coast to coast path twice before Debbies surgery and each time in passing noticed a lovely house near Nateby. They were thrilled to hear that it was up for rent and it then became their new home in 2017.

Andy's untimely death in June 2021 hasnt stopped Debbie from forging forward with the plans that they had made together, setting up a charity in Andy's memory and calling it after her blog - Access the Dales.

It has just been announced that she has been made a Cabinet Office Disability and Access Ambassador for the countryside. 

Ambassadors use their influential status as business leaders, to drive improvements to the accessability and quality of services and facilities in their sector for disabled people, as consumers and employees. They also work together as a group to galvanise and encourage accessability generally across the private sector, and work on projects of joint benefit.

In this episode Susan interviews Tom Addison over in Wensleydale. Tom is the creator of unique and bespoke items of fine furniture. Tom did his apprenticeship with the renowned Peter Hall and Sons, over in Kendal, before relocating and setting up his own business, TA Fine Furniture, near Askrigg in the Yorskshire dales.

As a youngster Tom was a keen fell runner, following in his parents footsteps, and starting at the age of 4. Realising that the more effort he put into his training the better results he could expect, Tom forwent partying and socialising with his friends in his teens in order to concentrate on his training, ultimately achieving the highest recognition by becoming English Fell Running Champion in 2014.

Tom seems to put his all into whatever he does, taking inspiration from the dales landscapes he produces beautiful items of furniture. By having his workshop attached to his home he is able to spend quality time with his wife and young daughters and somehow still manages to fit in some fellrunning!

The wood Tom uses is sustainably sourced and as local as possible from the National Park near Settle - The Wonder of Wood. The Gothic Throne that he made is in situ at the top of the Castle Tower at the Forbidden Corner near Middleham.

In this episode Susan talks with Ed Taylor, an inspirational young entrepeneur, who, in spite of all the challenges going on recently, has actually set up his own successful business. At the age of 26, and with just two years running the company under his belt, Ed has 8 employees and is currently recruiting for more.

Having been brought up in Leeds and encouraged from an early age to work hard, Ed's work ethic is strong and he was earning money for himself from the age of 8. He relocated to the dales to be with his partner Aishlinn, and confesses that at the same time as he was falling in love with her he also fell in love with the rural lifestyle. Many would have found the challenge of starting a business daunting, at one of the most difficult times in recent history, however Ed has risen to this and has plenty of enthusiasm moving forwards.

So listen in to hear Ed's no nonsense approach, talking about what brought him to the dales and how his entrepeneurial mindset formed at such a young age.

Today's episode is with Yvonne Macdonald, one of the coordinators running Richmondshire's  branch of Home Start. This is a charitable organisation supporting families with young children and their aim is for every parent to have the support they need to give their children the best possible start in life. Home Start is a global organisation and started in the Uk in 1973. It grew in strength and now there are approximately 200 branches throughout the UK. It is also a worldwide organisation operating in 22 countries.

The local Richmondshire branch was set up in 2009, has Baroness Brenda Hale as a patron, and in 2020 was awarded the prestigious Queen's award for Voluntary Services. This award was in recognition for all the sterling work that has been carried out by the staff and volunteers. Due to Covid restrictions in 2020, an invitation to attend the Buckingham Palace Garden Party was delayed until this year, and has just recently been attended by a longstanding local volunteer. 

Listen in to hear about the work carried out by the volunteers as well as the challenges faced by the coordinators to raise funds to keep the branch going. A five year Lottery grant got them off to a good start in 2009 and since then, due to their location, and the close relationship they have with the army in Catterick, they have received funding from the Armed Forces Covenant, and Army Central funds, to allow them to continue supporting families on the Garrison.

In this episode Susan talks to award winning author and entrepeneur Hannah Russell. Hannah started writing a blog about Little Alf, her minature shetland pony, when she was aged 16 and had her first book published at the age of 17. Since then she has written a series of books, 14 at the time of this interview. This includes an autobiographical account of life with Little Alf who has helped her over many of the challenges and ups and downs of recent years.Hannah has a small menagerie of rescue pets in the Yorkshire dales and they provide inspiration for her stories as well as actively being featured with her online.

Hannah believes in helping others and is an ambassador for 3 charities, Helping Rhinos, Brooke Action for working horses, donkeys and mules and Wild Welfare.She is also a charity fundraiser raising awareness for Sarcoma Cancer, recently having surgery and radiotherapy herself when she was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2020. Thankfully she is now in remission.

At the age of 25 she is a bundle of energy, designing clothing ranges to raise funds for the charities she supports and is soon about to launch a Wild and Country clothing range. In her free time she writes for the Yorkshire Times and is also illustrating a lot of her own work now.

Her mantra is " Live life to the fullest, make memories, keep smiling and don't look back"  advice that many of us would benefit from following.

In this episode Susan chats with extreme wild swimmer Stuart Gledhill. Stuart is one of the founder members of the Dales Dippers swim group based in the Yorkshire dales and has been swimming oudoors since he was very young. Stuart is also a Brigantes Courier driver and in the summer months this gives him ample opportunity to check out new swimming places and if he has enough time he fits in swims between drops.

In light of the more recent surge in popularity of this sport Stuart talks about safety whilst swimming and the need to be aware of cold water shock. This is the automatic response that your body can have to cold water. Please check out the article by Suzie Wheway in the notes below...as Stuart says " dont let it put you off, but be informed to keep yourself safe".

Stuart has taken part in charity fundraising for Crisis, a dip a day every day in January which he took part in with other members of the Dales dippers group earlier this year. Every day in such cold temperatures is quite an achievement.

He also went to the Scottish Winter Swimming Championships in March this year and won a silver medal in the breast stroke section. This was a great surprise to him at the time so much so that when he chatted about it he couldnt remember which colour medal he won.

Welcome back to Inside Yorkshire

This is a short trailer with Susan talking about changes in her local area and a brief chat about what she has been doing whilst off air. A large proportion of her time has been taken up with a 100 wild swim challenge, mainly in the Yorkshire dales, raising funds for Wateraid. Moving forwards she is now training to be a mental health swim coach introducing others to this exhilarating sport.

Susan shares with you news about forthcoming events. This coming weekend Richmond Mayfest is being celebrated. It is the town's newest annual event, a festival of historical and traditional music taking place in and around Richmond over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. Concerts, folk sessions, wandering minstrels, maypole and morris dancing, medieval tavern, ceilidh, in venues from The Market Place to The Station and to The Castle, with many points in between. Lots of the events are totally free, and there are reduced prices for local residents at all the ticketed events.

Then from 28th May to 11th June the Swaledale Festival is back celebrating its 50th anniversery with a diverse programme of music, arts and walking events. Tickets are now on sale for this. Check out the interview we did with Malcolm Creese, the festival artistic director, Series 2 episode 7.

This episode features Topic UK founder and editor Gill Laidler. Susan and Gill talk about the aims of the non profit magazine and how it came into being over 7 years ago. Gill and her business partner were handling PR, marketing accounts and graphic design  when they became aware that there was a lack of affordable platforms upon which local SMEs could share their information. Initially the magazine was just for Wakefield and district, however the demand for further coverage prompted the development of a Yorkshire wide publication. So Topic UK was born as a bimonthly magazine, published on alternate months, informing businesses across the Yorkshire Region, and featuring Yorkshire SMEs. Going from strength to strength the regular print run now is 10,000 copies. 

About the Guest:

When Gill left school she worked in marketing for an advertising agency and by the age of 20 was running the agency and managing ten staff. She then worked producing staff magazines for Morrisons and Yorkshire television before setting up in business as Ghost Communications with her business  partner  handling PR, marketing and graphic design. This company was run in tandem with Topic UK until Topic became so busy that it took over as their main business. Occasionally work will come in for Ghost Communications but they only deal with repeat business for existing clients.

Another project that they have recently launched is the online Yorkshire Business Woman site to provide a platform for women,with the aim of producing another publication for this audience by the end of the year.

This episode comes to you from Mozambique. Susan was surprised to discover that the conversations she had been having with Sam Hollis during networking meetings were actually taking place remotely from Mozambique. The story behind Sam's move to relocate, with his wife and two children, as organised a decision and process as that could be, took an unexpected turn when they were warned that South Africa was about to close down its airports due to lockdown. No spoiler alert here...they did make it but not quite in the timescale they anticipated.

Sam is a web designer and usually living in Yorkshire. He and his family have moved temporarily to Mozambique where he is still running his business remotely. He did actually confide that internet provision is better in Maputo than it was in his home in Yorkshire and due to the current lockdown situation no one is surprised that he is not working out of an office. Sam provides a pay as you go website design service which helps those in business who cannot afford the upfront cost of having a website designed for them.

Sam has travelled extensively in the past on kayaking expeditions and also talks about some of the trips he has taken following this hobby. Unfortunately, although they have shipped out their kayaks, the Hollis family will have to find somewhere else to paddle once they have settled in...the Zambezi river nearby has hippopotami and crocodiles!

In this episode we talk with Mike Barden who has taken on the role of editor for the Reeth and District Gazette. This is a challenging role and Susan and Mike discuss his individual take on it. The conversation ranges from mental health issues, homeworking and Fujitsu, to Monty Python and UFOs. Never a dull moment behind the scenes in the production of the Gazette.

Mike moved to Reeth with his family in March 2019, after holidaying in Yorkshire for many years and chose to relocate to the dales where they are now involved in the dales community. They couldn't anticipate the challenges of two local floods and now a pandemic to contend with, all within their first year here. Mike has a disability passport and discusses the extra difficulties he lives with on a daily basis. Editing the Gazette has proven to be a challenge that he finds helps to keep his active mind and predisposition to anxiety at bay. As a team leader for Fujitsu he has a high powered and demanding job and yet he also manages to fit in his volunteer editorial role on the Gazette.A busy man indeed.

Fairhursts catering has, like many other businesses,been hit by the current lockdown. They have been in the business of providing delicious food since the 80's and specialise in catering for events and weddings. Working out from their kitchen in Swinithwaite, in Wensleydale, they would usually be busy serving teas and catering for weddings at Bolton Castle as well as running their popular farmshop and cafe at Berrys. This year was projected to be one of their best so far with over 30 weddings and most weekends booked, however no one could have predicted the situation we all currently find ourselves in.

So what to do? They began providing locals in isolation with free delivery of their delicious ready cooked meals, not realising how popular this service would become. They have had to totally change the way they are operating and now, what began as a small venture, has blossomed into a busy service with around 400 scrumptious meals wending their way weekly to grateful recipients. The dales are quiet at the moment, restaurants,cafes and pubs are closed. So, for any of you fancying a night off cooking and top quality food, Guy talks about their plans for the future, expansion to further afield and what his company is doing to keep the business operating.

This episode is all about the wonderful support network being run by Herriot Hospice Homecare, Saint Michael's Hospice and the Just 'B' Here to Help lines. Tony Collins is the CEO overseeing all this activity with a team of 200 staff members and 6-700 willing volunteers. They provide 40-60 hours per day of support in the homes. Tony talks today about the range of services available, in Harrogate district as well as Hambleton and Richmondshire. These are expanding to meet the current and foreseeable future requirements due to extra pressure we are all under at this current time.

A newly set up helpline "Here to Help" offers nationwide support for children and adults, in short for anyone affected by Covid 19 who needs additional help. They provide emotional wellbeing advice, as well as bereavement and anxiety support. They are also involved in providing NHS staff with the anticipated additional bereavement and trauma support necessary due to the pandemic.

Have you ever wanted to own an English pub but couldn't afford the investment? Well 167 investors have bought shares in a pub in the Yorkshire dales and can now say that they part own the King's Head pub in Swaledale. Gunnerside's popular pub has had a chequered history and in this episode Susan talks with Tracey Westgarth about the process the local community went through to turn their village pub into a community owned one.

The King's head is now tenant run and community owned but faces the challenges all public houses face at this present time during lockdown. The purchase process began last September and the community support has been tremendous. Shares were released in February 2020 and within 5 days the share offer was oversubscribed, and now has a waiting list in reserve. At a time when all pubs are closed the enthusiasm of the committee has ensured that the purchase still went ahead in order to secure the deal. 

Advice and support was enlisted from the Plunkett Foundation who were involved from the start of the project. Also the team from The George and Dragon in Hudswell, a hugely successful local community owned pub, were happy to share their experience and advise the commitee on how to proceed with managing their membership. The next step forward is to proceed with repairs whilst awaiting government permission to reopen,  and we look forward to a big party when that happens.

In this episode Susan talks to Julian Norton who is one of the vets featured in The Yorkshire Vet television programme on Channel five. This popular series is currently into its tenth series airing weekly on Tuesday evenings. The filming of series eleven has unfortunately been halted temporarily due to the coronovirus pandemic.

In this episode Julian talks about his new book A Yorkshire Vet - The Next Chapter, which documents his move from his old practice in Thirsk to his present employment in Boroughbridge. The move made him feel like a graduate again, having to familiarise himself with not only the workings of a new practice but also having to learn the whereabouts of farms and clients. This challenge was sometimes in the dead of night, with the often unreliable satellite navigation suffered in areas of the dales.

Julian Norton is a mixed practice veterinary surgeon, currently working in Boroughbridge at Rae, Bean and Partners. He previously worked in Thirsk as a partner in the practice that was once the surgery from which Alf Wight worked (famous as the vet who wrote the James Herriot books). Julian has recently opened a new independent small animal practice- Sandbeck Veterinary Centre, in Wetherby.

He has his own podcast "The Naked Vet"  which he performs with Kate Fox, a comedian and stand up poet.

The guest in this episode is Adam Fisher and he talks to Susan about his impression of the ghost town of Pripyat during his scientific tour of Chernobyl. Animals have taken over the area, moving in after humans moved out. Wildlife such as lynx, elk and wolves now roam the wasteland. At night wolves could be heard howling outside the hotel where he was staying and during his visit Adam was intrigued by the number of stray dogs who followed them travelling through the area.

Adam studies at the University of Sheffield where he is a PhD student at the Nuclear Centre for Doctoral training.His research speciality is in the disposal of nuclear waste materials and during the trip he investigated lava-like material left behind after the melt down at the Chernobyl disaster site. The disposal of nuclear residue is a global issue and Adam gave his opinion on how that can be safely achieved.

Inspiration for the books came when travelling miles along the M1 motorway surrounded by road works and miles of Cones! Thus, the ‘conecept' of Cones coming alive and having adventures was born. Susan chats with Carol Tetlow in this week's episode about her life as a GP and her journey to becoming a published author. Carol persevered sending off her manuscripts to publishers and resisted the temptation to self publish. She was eventually rewarded with a contract from a Canadian publisher for her medical series set in fictitious Lambdale and the Teviotdale medical centre.

Since this episode was recorded, Carol's new series about tennis club intrigue, written originally for her sister, has been taken on by a UK publisher and we expect that to be released soon.

About the Guest:

Carol has retired from general practice, and lives in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales with four labradors, two cats, ten donkeys, two ponies but just the one very long-suffering husband. She started writing using her work background as the theme for her novels. 
She has five in her first series all based in Lambdale and the fictitious Teviotdale medical centre. Carol uses the market town of Masham as her inspiration and is careful to create characters who cannot be identified by the patients she once treated.  

When she's not writing, Carol is busy playing tennis, walking the dogs, trying to hone her skills at carriage driving and catching up with friends. She is also kept busy giving talks on the Yorkshire Speaker's circuit.

Organising the programme for the annual Swaledale Festival is a huge task and Malcolm Creese, Artistic Festival Director, talks to Susan about the history and running of this event. He works with a small team throughout the year and then, during the festival, they are assisted by a willing band of volunteers.  

About the Festival:

The annual Swaledale Festival encompasses 60+ high-quality music, arts and walking events throughout Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale, including classical, folk and world music, art exhibitions, films, dance, poetry, talks, workshops and an extensive community and education programme. The Festival has won numerous awards and is highly regarded nationally and internationally. It makes a major contribution to the economy of the Dales through its own activities and through the thousands of people it attracts to its events.

The Festival in numbers:

The Young Artists Platform was launched in 2008 and consists of an annual series of concerts by young musicians early in their careers.  In the last few years Swaledale Festival has featured concerts by BBC Young Musicians of the Year winners Nicholas Daniel, Emma Johnson, Natalie Clein, Peter Moore and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, as well as concerto finalists Juliet Bausor, Charlotte Barbour-Condini and Jess Gillam. In this episode we feature two tracks from Fourum's popular music and Susan talks to Jim Jack about how the band started in 1972 and quickly grew in popularity. The name of the band came initially from the latin word Forum meaning a meeting place, with the addition of the extra letter U to distinguish from other groups. It also reinforces the setup of the band which over the years has predominantly had four main performers.  

About the Guests:

The group began with four members: Allen Miller, Jim Jack, Bob Hattersley and Dave Smith, who all worked together teaching at Hummersknott school in Darlington. The lineup changed over the next few years and then settled with the addition of Sandy Still in 1978. Most of their original songs were written and composed by Allen Miller and more recently Rod Hall has contributed with some of his creations and is now a member of the band.

Sadly Bob Hattersley passed away in 2010 and as an ongoing tribute to him Fourum raise funds for Cancer Research, around £16000 so far.

In this week's episode of Inside Yorkshire Susan talks to Roger Cheetham who survived a vicious attack whilst out walking his dog. Although he was left for dead and needed many months in hospital Roger has been able to take this life changing experience and turn it into a message of resilience.

About the Guest:

Roger was attacked whilst walking his dog, an unprovoked attack in June 2013 and despite carrying cash, his telephone and the keys to his pub -The Bassett in Fox Hill, Sheffield - he was not robbed. No motive for the attack has been proven and to this day the perpetrators are still at large. Roger's life has been changed permanently, he is now disabled, but instead of being defined by his attack he has managed to turn the event around and use it as a positive message of overcoming adversity and promoting resilience.

He is the founder of "Live the Life you deserve" and speaks internationally about how he feels it has changed his life for the better, a message of resilience.

In this episode Susan follows on from last week by talking to Ted Grainger, the third founding member of the Veteran's Woodcraft group supporting people affected by their military service. Also interviewed today are two further members of the group, Andy and Matt. .. all three talk openly about their mental health struggles with PTSD since leaving service. 

The veterans also help in the community by providing outreach support to mental health groups in the area, teaching woodcraft skills and giving theraputic support to those in need. They are taking part in a bid for lottery funding through the People's Project - Woodwork Warriors and need your votes to secure funding to further grow their reach and increase the support that they can offer.

Set-up by a group of veterans, Veterans Woodcraft delivers woodcraft courses to help veterans who have been physically and mentally affected by their military service.
By working with wood, they help them rebuild their lives, grow in confidence and develop their resilience to help them recover and lead active, fulfilling lives.

About the Guests:

Ted Grainger is the technical director of the company using sophisticated CNC software and equipment to create intricate items of wood carving. He is ex RAF and has studied CNC and CAD to reach a high level of proficiency in the use of the Legacy machines. Ted very openly discusses his PTSD and how it has impacted his life over the years.

Andy was an army chef and good naturedly accepts that this can put him on the receiving end of banter from his fellow Woodcraft Warriors. He enjoys the camaraderie and supportive environment in which he and fellow members can relax and flourish whilst learning new skills. Andy gives back by helping support new members and also helps with outreach activities.

Matt Wightman first met the group's founding members at Phoenix House Recovery Centre in Catterick, where Help for Heroes runs its recovery services in the North. He suffered badly having a fellow serviceman and room mate commit suicide at the age of 19 whilst serving in Ireland. His later service in Bosnia only increased the pressure upon him, the result in later life was PTSD. However he joined a class to make an electric guitar out of wood and the confidence he gained in the process has led him into better health and increased his self worth.So confident is he now that he holds an equity card and has acted in several plays.

A change of circumstances led her to sell up and move back to the UK where she proceeded to establish herself in farming and to develop her arts and crafts business.

Janet Phillips began life in rural Derbyshire spending holidays working on the family farm and from an early life enjoying art and crafts. Dyslexia meant that passing exams was never going to be easy, however she persevered in order to gain the qualifications needed to go to art college.She took a degree in fine art sculpture and then qualified as a teacher. A job in Hong Kong beckoned and she moved out there and rose to the challenge teaching art lessons in french.

Listen to Janet explain how she began her entrepreneurial journey with a mysterious buyer purchasing all her drawings at her first exhibition in Hong Kong. She has had several successful businesses in both Hong Kong and in UK, settling more recently in the Yorkshire Dales. Rhoda began her life on her family farm in Arkengarthdale, rural North Yorkshire. As an only child, with a vivid imagination, she won a Brook Bond creative writing competition at the age of 10 and so began her interest in storytelling.

Rhoda writes poetry and has published several books. She enjoys entertaining young and old alike with her tales and leads Ghost walks around Richmond market town. She tells us about her Dales Tea and Tales events and her interest in charity fundraising. The day we spoke to her she was hosting the first of two fundraising pie and pea suppers that weekend in her own home, raising funds for the local Methodist Chapel and an Alzheimer support group in Richmond. This is one very busy lady with interesting tales to tell.

In this episode Susan talks to Leyburn artist Lynn Ward, whose first job out of art college was painting the underworld murals in The Forbidden Corner in Coverdale. Lynn has had a prolific career and embraced many different styles over the years painting for commissioned projects.

About the Guest:

Lynn is Yorkshire born and bred and has spent most of her life living in Wensleydale. She attended art college, first in York and afterwards at Cleveland before embarking upon a career which led her underground, painting murals and creating statues during the inception of The Forbidden Corner. It was a formative time for the young artist who then progressed to working on a 90 foot mural for the Dunkirk Veterans event at Tennants in Leyburn.

Lynn is currently finishing off a large classical painting commission and she is about to do a painting demonstration in Hartlepool. She has artwork on display in her studio and can be found there most days when she is not working on site or playing her cornet in Leyburn Brass Band.

Ramsay's fish and chip van has become an institution in the dales with regular clientele looking forward to their weekly visits. Unfortunately for dales folk the business is now up for sale and we all hope that the new owners will continue this much loved service.

Pauline had worked in a fish and chip shop as a young lass prior to taking on the mobile van but is was a steep learning curve for her and husband Richard when they took on the business. They have developed it into a thriving mobile takeaway service for those in the dales who rely upon them in order to have a night off cooking.

Pauline shares their journey and gives us an insight into this family business with even the youngest members having an input into the van's design. We also learn that the fish they use travels all the way from Iceland...no... not the store but the country!

Pauline and Richard are now planning their retirement and just need an investor who is prepared to keep the business running, providing food to the dales.

Welcome back to the next episode of Inside Yorkshire. In this episode we find out about the history of Richmond Grammar school, the success of past pupils and plans for the forthcoming development. Aided by a first-round grant from the Heritage Enterprise Lottery Fund and from the Architectural Heritage Fund, Richmondshire Building Preservation Trust is currently working on plans to restore and re-purpose this wonderful, iconic building, which sits across the river from The Station.

The Trust is working towards saving the School to be used as a sustainable ‘Community Hub', providing community facilities with complementary commercial use to ensure its future viability.

In this episode Susan talks with James Gravenor,  Chair of the Old Grammar School Project Committee. James has worked for many years with the ongoing running of Richmond station and is now enthusiastically involved with the forthcoming plans to develop the old grammar school buildings.

Welcome back to the next episode of Inside Yorkshire. In this episode Susan talks to Pete Roe, a rescue leader with several decades of experience rescuing people and animals in distress. Pete explains that there is so much involved in coordinating the teams of people involved, more than would be expected and each event unique in itself. He gives a clear and detailed account of what is involved when there is a callout and also some amusing tales of unusual rescues he has been involved in.

About the Guest:

Pete Roe is an avid cave explorer, caving being a way of life for him since his brother introduced him to the sport at the age of 11. That breadth of experience over the years has proven to be extremely useful when involved in underground rescues. When he was first involved with the mountain rescue team he was the only volunteer in Swaledale; now he is a rescue leader, sharing his experience and expertise with a much expanded group of people who give up their precious time to assist those in distress. 

Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team (SMRT) is a registered charity which provides a mountain and cave rescue service within the Swaledale and Wensleydale areas of North Yorkshire.  The team is made up of a group of highly trained volunteers who are available to be called out for a variety of land based search and rescue operations, any time day or night.  SMRT provide a 24 hours per day, 365 days per year service.

Welcome back to the next episode of Inside Yorkshire. This is the second of a two part interview with artist Dudley Edwards. This episode covers the remainder of his time in London and his return to Yorkshire. He was commissioned to produce large murals for one of the Sheikhs in Saudi Arabia. These were produced in UK and then shipped to be reassembled in their final destination.

Dudley shot to fame during the sixties painting wild coloured furniture, shop fronts and even a piano owned by one of the Beatles. He was born and brought up in Yorkshire, studying art in Halifax and then Bradford, before moving down to London to seek fame and fortune. 

About the Guest:

Dudley began life in West Yorkshire and was inspired by his school teacher to attend the Halifax school of Art. This was much to his father's disappointment who was keen for him to get a proper job. He did so well there that it took him onto further studies at Bradford college of Art. Having completed 5 years of training and honing his skills he was keen to seek fame and fortune - London beckoned.

Once down in London Dudley got together with two other Bradford graduates, Doug Binder and David Vaughan, the three of them founding the BEV pop collective. Their vibrant art designs on furniture, shop fronts and cars led to commissions from clients who included David Bailey, the Beatles and Tara Browne, heir to the Guinness fortune.

BEV's psychedelic murals appeared everywhere from the boutiques of Kings Road and Carnaby Street to Paul McCartney's 'Magic Piano'. He spent months living with Paul painting a mural for him and then did the same for Ringo Starr. His artwork continued to be in high demand and he produced some murals for one of the Sheikhs in Saudi Arabia. These were painted on tiles in UK and then assembled in the palace for the Sheikh, unfortunately Dudley never saw them in situ.

Dudley continues to paint in his Yorkshire studio but he doesnt find it enjoyable...as he confessed "it is a compulsion", however when he achieves the results he is striving for then that makes it all worthwhile.

His recent artwork can be seen in the RedHouse Originals Gallery in Harrogate.

"I remember the first time I first saw a photo of their painted car in the Sunday Times Magazine and I thought it was really cool. So I got in touch with them and asked the guys if we could have a meeting. We did, and I told them "I've got a little piano I'd like you to decorate in that same style". And at first they were a little bit reluctant to do anything, but I persuaded them. So they measured it all up, took the panel dimensions, and worked up some designs. Then they painted it and did a lovely job. It became my psychedelic piano which I wrote a lot of songs on, including 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band', 'Fixing A Hole', and 'Hey Jude'. It's in its rightful place in my music room in London."

Eileen Brereton is Coordinator for the Dales and District Fundraising group for Guide dogs but she began by starting as a puppy walker and guide dog foster carer. The first dog she took on was Kelly, who arrived at the age of six weeks and stayed with her to be socialised before moving on to be trained as a guide dog at approx 14 months. Kelly could always find M & S for her handler and another dog was expert at sourcing out Costa coffee shops. Eileen has had 6 dogs so far but doesnt have one at the moment.

Welcome back to the Inside Yorkshire podcast. In today's episode we listen to authors Eileen Brereton and Anne Wall talk about the role of the Red Cross Auxiliary hospitals, in Yorkshire, during the First World War. They have written a book entitled Home Comforts describing the importance of these medical outposts. Recuperating wounded soldiers, far away from their own families, had home comforts provided for them by VADs in the 32 auxiliary hospitals set up across the county. Eileen and Anne give us a wonderful insight into life in the voluntary aid detachments.These were voluntary units of civilians providing nursing care for military personnel in the United Kingdom and various other countries in the British Empire. The most important periods of operation for these units were during World War I and 2.

Eileen Brereton and Anne Wall were Red Cross trainers when they were asked to set up a commemorative WW1 hospital for East Rounton village hall's centenary celebrations in 2006. That began a project that has lasted over 12 years now and taken them on a fascinating voyage of discovery, unearthing information and memorabilia from 32 hospitals in the North Riding of Yorkshire and the VADs (voluntary aid detachments) who worked in them.

Helen and her husband Dean, who is also an acupuncturist, travel to Nepal as volunteers supporting the Thrangu Monastery bringing healthcare to remote areas of Nepal. They give their time and expertise helping Wangchuk Rapten Lama, and his team at the monastery, treating locals who often have to walk miles to reach the medical care they need. Helen and Dean often treat up to 40 people each day whilst they are at the Thrangu Phende clinic working alongside the Tibetan monk. The clinic is within the grounds of the Thrangu Monastery in Nammo Buddha, Karve. Between visits to volunteer overseas Helen raises funds to send out to support the clinic's continuing work.

David learned to build dry stone walls at the age of 16 when he was working down the pits. Walls were used to support the coal seams whilst the miners worked down there...a hard life for a young lad.

David has had a variety of other jobs since then, however his building expertise has created a flourishing business. He creates and maintains the dry stone walls that define the characteristic dales scenery. He also works as a landscape gardener, out in all weathers, with no two days the same.

This young man decided to raise awareness of men's mental health issues by running around the boundary of Yorkshire in an effort to raise funds for mental health charity CALM. Ben is a keen runner, having run several marathons already, but had not taken into consideration the huge variety of terrain that would be involved. Phil explains the ins and outs of a retained fire service and how it differs from those in bigger cities.

Phil talks about the many different challenges involved in being on-call 24/7 to not only fight fires but also respond to accidents, and perform rescues with a limited crew of men. At the end of the day though, the only part of the job Phil wishes he didn't have to deal with is the paperwork!

○      Other times, a fire will be far off road and they have to abandon the fire engine and walk miles to get to it and try to beat it out.

○      One of the hardest parts of working as an emergency responder in a small community is how often the emergency might be happening to someone you know.

The Yorkshire hills is surely a challenging route to take for professional cyclists. But it isn't just the terrain, many enthusiasts are starting to take notice of how fantastic the way of life is and how the people are. Stu didn't ever plan to move into Swaledale but he loved the countryside and decided to stay. He and his wife built the Dales Bike Centre, which is very popular with visitors who want to explore the place.
