We lighten the mood and after the political fix, we turn to music and my interview with James Felice of the Felice Brothers which I taped last week before their sold out December 29th show at The Brooklyn Bowl. James was ultra candid about his thoughts on our society and the interplay between the toxic political climate and the art that it is breeding including his bands own music. James revealed that the bands 6th full length release will be hitting the airwaves in May of this year and he also sheds light on the music industry and the ever evolving music landscape that he continues to traverse 12 years after the Catskill family band began busking in the New York city Subway.

With shocking last minute news coming from Governor Cuomo's hastily arranged Thursday afternoon press conference that the Manhattan/Brooklyn L Train will not be shut in its entirety for 15 months beginning in April, host Chilly Pete speaks with local Assemblyman Joe Lentol to better understand the news. What alternate travel accommodations will remain in place on nights and weekends, how much money will the new plan require, and is Assemblyman Lentol comfortable with Governor Cuomo's non-traditional approach to this issue? They also discuss pending legislation in Albany that is set to legalize cannabis for consumer use in this upcoming legislative session.

Chilly Pete is then joined with transit consultant Joe Anastasio of Access Queens who authored the organization's L train closure analysis plan. They discuss the logistical dilemmas that will still exist during the L trains night and weekend disruptions for the next few years as the work is slated to take at minimum 15 months to complete.

Western New York Defense Attorney Mario J. Fratto has always been a type of person to say what is on his mind. When candidate Donald Trump entered the political arena, Trumps disdain of traditional political norms attracted Fratto to then candidate Trump.

Two years into his Trump’s Presidential term, Fratto admits things are a bit dysfunctional, but he’s sticking by his guy. Fratto believes the system is so rotted from within, dysfunction is something that could be beneficial- it certainly has motivated citizens from all political persuasions to tune into political as was seen by November’s near historic voter participation.

Fratto chats with Chilly Pete about politics in 2018, jumping from one hot button issue to the next with some predictions for the new year. They keep it civil and they both hope for calm in 2019, but Fratto admits calm is an unlikely political reality once Democrats take the Congressional gavel on January 3rd.

On December 13th at around 1am, a fire that began in a Sunnyside restaurant on Queens Boulevard quickly spread down the street and ended up destroying six neighborhood businesses. 12 people were injured while putting out the five alarm blaze, but luckily no one killed in the process and the FDNY did an amazing job in brining the scene under control.

Only days away from Christmas, the community rallied and Chilly Pete joins with the head of the Sunnnyside Queens Chamber of Commerce and the co-founder of Access Queens, Melissa Orlando, who sheds light in the aftermath as a community comes together in a time of crisis. Melissa also outlines ways that you can help Sunnyside’s residents in overcoming this tragic event including donating to the verified GoFund me site that has been set up.

We begin this weeks edition of Chilly Underground with a conversation revolving around the breaking news out of Albany that Governor Cuomo is quickly changing his attitude on recreational cannabis. With Michigan and Massachusetts going fully legal in the last two weeks, the cannabis landscape is changing at break neck speed.

"We're drafting legislation," Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for the governor, told NBC News earlier this week- which could be introduced to the state legislature as soon as January. With Democrats now controlling both legislative chambers, it could likely sail through for a vote as soon as April, 2019.

Chilly Pete speaks with the Executive director, David Holland, of the Empire State chapter of The NationalOrganization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws to fully understand what the legislation looks like and to better understand the environment that has fostered this rapid breakthrough.

Brandon "Taz" Niederauer picked up the guitar when he was 8 years old, and he rarely puts it down. By age 10 he was playing songs by request for Ellen Degeneres on her nationally syndicated TV program and the rest is history. His next move to was to star in the Broadway hit musical "School of Rock." His surging musical prowess has turned heads across the music landscape, getting him playing time at the nations top music festivals with blues legends such as Buddy Guy and B.B. King , to metal gods like Slash, to his idol Derek Trucks. 

Now that Brandon is in high school and maturing as an artist, he brings his talents to Manhattan's Mercury Lounge on Saturday night, November 8th. Before the show, Brandon spoke with Chilly Pete in a wide ranging interview and lets him into his creative process both as a rising musical star and as a person who is trying to hang on to a sense of normalcy.

Late Friday afternoon, the state of Massachusetts announced that after two years of waiting, the sale of recreational cannabis would begin on Tuesday, November 20th, in two Massachusetts locations. This will be the first state on the East coast to fully legalize for recreational use for residents over 21, and with New Jersey toying with the idea, this could put the pressure on New York to jump in on the action.

Chilly Pete spoke by phone with Kamani Jefferson, President of the Massachusetts Recreational Consumer Council to understand what to expect as a consumer as well as a citizen. Is the system ready for roll out? Who is growing for the state? What is going to happen to the black market now that the state is looking to make revenue from the legal sale of cannabis?

With this week's news that Amazon’s newest corporate facility- or at least part of it- is likely coming to Long Island City, nervous residents around the Greenpoint area are bracing for what the effects could be for the housing market and community at large. One group in particular that may be nervous is the Polish community, an ethnic group who have called Greenpoint home for over a century but in recent years have been moving out of North Brooklyn.
