Sun, 04 Aug 2019 - 34min - 203 - Ep0080 "Being Unapologetic" - with Davide DiGiorgio
"You've waited your whole life, how much longer are you going to make the people who are awaiting the message only YOU can deliver... wait?"
Sooo many nuggets, sooo little time... this is the show you listen to when the chips are down, there's no heat in the house, no food in the fridge and you're questioning why on earth you became a professional speaker/entrepreneur/leader in the first place... Davide has a talent for seeing right into the soul of the thought leader and polishing the diamond in the rough.
Davide wrote "Being Unapologetic' as his own reminder that he was never going to go back to being apologetic - for anything. He had a double-whammy of being from a self-professed, apologetic Catholic-Canadian guilt-ridden culture and he just "got sick of it." After spending months outlining the book, he went on an 8-day cruise and wrote the whole book.
Ironically, Davide admits to apologizing to his editor, Patrick Snow, for dropping off his book "Being Unapologetic" for editing...
As one of the world's leading speaking experts, he's worked with thousands of on-purpose speakers, performers, executives, and leaders across multiple industries for more than 25 years.
Davide pushes his readers to ask the right questions, not the popular ones, in order to uncover your natural gifts. This book is LOADED with tools to take your game to the next level
Not only does "Being Unapologetic" deliver, so does his website. The blog is chock FULL of GREAT advice for speakers and professionals.See our Guest Offerings at SelfTalkRadioShow.com

You can hear me taken a bit by surprise when Todd talks about what happened to him at 12. I had seen the Facebook post of how he had thought about taking his life at the tender age of 12... but for whatever reason, I didn't read on to see the WHY behind that. His courage and willingness to talk about how he moved past being sexually abused to help thousands of people improve their performance on and off the field is inspiring.
Not only does Todd share his personal stories, but he backs up his findings with scientific research behind our minds. Is there something to "fake it til you make it?" How do you "stay in your lane" and not stray into becoming something that you're really not? No matter if you're an athlete, entrepreneur or parent, you will come away with some gems in this interview.
Todd has spent 20+ years mentoring Olympic athletes, public figures, leaders and entrepreneurs, on peak performance and has built his own life based on one foundational principle: the people that win, whether they’re smart, ignorant, young or old, are the ones that can unlock their Heroic Self and display ALL of their capabilities on the field of play of life.

An alarming article in the New York Times penned by Sapna Maheshwari, cites data from Coresight Research with a serious blow to brick and mortar retail: "Less than halfway through April, American retailers have announced plans this year to shut 5,994 stores, exceeding the 5,854 announced in all of 2018." Is there REALLY any hope for retail? According to retail forecaster and author of "Retail Schmetail," Sandy Stein, it's a resounding YES - but maybe not in the way shoppers remember the experience dating from the 50s to the 90s.
"Sears has been on the longest store closing bankruptcy in the history of retail," Sandy quips. He also talks about stores that are winning like Target, with less inventory and more of a solutions-based shopping experience.
Who will win in the retail space? The entrepreneurs that are "Digital First retailers who realize their stores help build the traffic online. There's no longer a need to build hundreds of stores to create scale." Take a listen to Sandy and he'll give you renewed hope for small business startups looking to get into the retail space online.

I met Eric when pitching Vermont Chalky Paint at the Vermont Barn Pitch in my friends, Trish Sears and Steve Mason's barn. Eric came roaring in on a motorbike along with 15-20 other investors all with shiny BMWs glistening in the sun on a hot summer's day. I didn't win the first pitch, but I did win the second year and went onto the statewide competion. Eric was razor-sharp in helping me hone my messaging from Entrepreneur (Unicorn) speak (I want this money because it's a REALLY cool idea...) to Investor Speak (It costs x to make this product, burn rate of 1-3 years, and ROI of $X in 3-5 years.) In other words, I wanted to exchange my Unicorn for Secretariat...
Eric offers great ideas for getting your head around focusing your company not only for investors, but more importantly, for YOUR ROI. A really valuable listen for those of us who like to manifest our dreams into tangible dollars and sense... (mis-spelling intended.)
P.S. My apologies for the recording being a bit sketchy - I promise, the content is SOLID. Eric even offers his contact info at the end. PLEASE take him up on his offer - it'll be time well spent.

When my mother died, I was obsessed with connecting with her in some capacity. I had one of her old lipsticks tucked in my purse and sometimes, I'd pull it out just so I had a scent or something she had actually touched. We had a psychic in our neighborhood that I visited when I first lost my mom. I reached for my wallet and found I only had $5 bucks on me. She gave me a hug and said, "No charge, honey - the sacred's not for sale."
That sentence has hung with me over the years and I wrestled with it - until this interview. I posed the question to psychic, best-selling author of numerous books and former host of "Crossing Over, Soo...Is the sacred for sale?
John Edward offers the best answer I've ever heard to this question. He offers comfort to thousands of people who suffer through the loss of a loved one and faces critics who accuse him of taking advantage of people at their most vulnerable time. He rolls with the punches with his rapid fire delivery and occasional impatience with those who think a step or two slower than he does. He talks about where he receives spiritual guidance when he feels lost (the answer may surprise you...) the power of valuing your talents, and the power of belief.

In all the episodes I've had, I've yet to hear a guest talk about how easy it was to make their way to the top. In fact, many of them had their greatest epiphanies when staring down a bowl of Ramen noodles. So I faced Kevin Neff's new show, "Speaking of Success," with some trepidation. Is it going to be a sound bite of how Entrepreneur X took their company to $6B in 6 months? His answer is refreshing.
Some of his guests aren't even "famous" at all. Or some tell stories of how they've fallen from grace to build success from the ashes. The best revelations are toward the end when Kevin offers some self-reflection on how he defines success for himself.
On Branding:
You'll find many pearls in this episode in Kevin's notorious in-your-face rapid-fire delivery. How do you not only GRAB their attention but KEEP their
attention?
"Your brand should punch people in the face. You're not a grain of sand on the beach, you're a grain of sand on all the beaches of the world."
And thus begins our entry into the world of Kevin Makes Sense.com
How he met Mark Shulman
Kevin's no stranger to punching people in the face with his branding. An 8' tall banner attracted Mark Schulman - drummer for Pink, Beyonce, Cher, Billy Idol (among others,) to Kevin's booth at the National Speakers Association convention. The banner pictured an electric chair with
"Don't Be a Dead Brand Walking - Give Your Marketing a Jolt" emblazoned on the front. He got the gig. Kevin continues,"Your brand should speak for you even if you're not in the room."
His take on C-Suite Network CEO Jeffrey Hayzlett:
We talked about our mutual experience interviewing Jeffrey Hayzlett; yes, you sit up straighter in your seat and you'd better be quick on your feet; Jeffrey doesn't suffer fools. Only Kevin Neff would be able to boldly ask about the gift Jeffrey Hayzlett received from KISS Gene Simmons. Take a listen
to learn what it is (and yes, I laughed...)
When did Kevin know when he was successful?
It's easy to assume you gain success by garnering the spotlight, and grabbing it by results. For Kevin, there was a time where success was making it month-to-month. He talks about going from hero to zero overnight and went from 6 figures to nothing. This experience helped him re-define success,
"Success is doing biz w/ people you wanna work with, do work you enjoy doing and getting
results for clients and knowing they would refer and use us again." He still faults himself on
caring TOO much about what others think. "People wear failure like a lapel pin, but failure can sometimes be part of the process. It's what comes out of the failure - Did you pick yourself up by the bootstraps?"
One and Done - do it right the first time.
We talked about setting plans in motion and dealing with doubt. "If this doesn't work, what's Plan B? There is no Plan B... Plan B means there's an iota of failure." For Kevin, he can't have a seed of doubt. He would be so distracted by that grain of sand of doubt, that it would take his time and focus away from Plan A. What you focus on grows - focus on doing it right the first time.

If Jeffrey Hayzlett referring to Donald Trump as "bat-shit crazy" offends you, this interview might make you uncomfortable. Or smirk. Do you squirm when asked to "take a stand?" Then Jeffrey will shine an uncomfortable light on the shadow side that we all carry. Take a knee or stand for the flag? #MeToo or #NowWhat? We've become either lightning rods in our own Facebook feeds, or colorless, vanilla-flavored watered down versions of ourselves for fear of the repercussions of "taking a side." In fact, I kind of feel like "The Hero Factor" really should be renamed "Take a Stand." Because Jeffrey takes no prisoners. He doesn't suffer fools and welcomes his own son and daughter to challenge him in a board meeting.
His intensity and honesty feels like a cold washcloth to the face - scrubbing the grime of our placating off and making us look in the mirror and see what makes us uncomfortable - what helps us stand in our truth. And what makes us heroic - drawing a line in the sand for what we will and will not put up with, regardless of the consequences. (Or because of them...)
From his experience as a celebrity judge on Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice," to the pivots he's had to make in his C-Suite Network, Jeffrey's honest take on ALL of his experiences leave you with a treasure trove of what it really means to embark on The Hero Factor journey.

However, John Nemo, author of "LinkedIn Riches," says "It's more than just for job seekers , you can use it for Sales & Marketing, for business getting employees, getting vendors, industry news, thought leadership, training - it's a

After losing his cool with a boss during the 2008 recession, he got fired from his day job after writing an angry email defending the powers of the emerging Social Media to promote business. The old guard was having none of that, so he was shown the door. Within a week, he got 2 new job offers for a $30k
pay raise. Got fired on a Friday, within 6 days, thanks to LinkedIn, he was making $30k more a year.
While he had a great gig, he wasn't happy. So John left the corporate handcuffs behind and started his
own agency with 1 client and enough money to float for 30 days. Balancing his MacPro on top

See our Guest Offerings at SelfTalkRadioShow.comSun, 03 Feb 2019 - 35min - 190 - Ep0067 - "Stroke of Genius" with Dr. Donna Blevins
You'd never know Dr. Donna Blevin's Virginian southern tinged voice was once silenced in a surprising twist on Halloween in 2013. After completing her book, "Mindshift on Demand," a massive left-brain stroke robbed her of the ability to speak. Even her speech language pathologist thought he needed to re-schedule therapy with her for at least 8 months before she would ever speak again. Remarkably, Dr. Donna Blevins recovered her ability to speak 3 short days later and now is emboldened with the mission to teach others how to harness the remarkable power of our minds.
You can't help but smile listening to Dr. Blevins - especially when she speaks of Mama Peggy and her 5'3" husband who stands by her towering 6'5" frame stirring up an unlikely picture in your mind of this couple. "When somebody sees us, we draw attention." Dr. Blevins jokes, "he didn't grow up really..." I paused and chuckled not wanting to be impolite, but also finding her humor right up my alley.
Dr. Donna Blevins is a storyteller at heart. I'm captivated by stories of her husband, her 92-year-old Mama Peggy and how she describes her stroke akin to having a filing cabinet of every word you've ever spoken thrown on the floor in chaos. She asks at one point, "What would you do?" I'd start to file it, but then I'd probably want to burn it in utter frustration. One of the places she triggers every fear button in me is the realization that she is totally cognizant of people around her, but can only utter 2 words - her name, "Donna," and "Crap." Can you imagine? You're aware of what you used to be, and now, you're limited to 2 words and a filing cabinet of words strewn on the floor of your subconscious.
How to Get Your Brain to Shift - Gear Up
How many times when you're faced with a challenge, you get discouraged and somebody says, "you've just gotta shift your mindset?" Now how many times has anyone evershown you how to do it? Dr. Blevins simplifies mind-shifting by offering 12 Mindshift exercises. In the back of the book, Dr. Blevins lists all of the exercises and the page where you can find it in detail.
How Long does it take to form a Habit?
Dr. Blevins suggests it takes 6 times to create a relationship to learning a new behavior. She suggests taking one of the exercises, work on it for a week and try another one the following week. She insists we don't need to do these for hours, but rather focus on one mindshifting modality for about 10 minutes a day to really feel results.
Mindshift Exercises
When I ask her about her favorite of the 12 exercises, she says the "Hmm, isn't that Interesting?" exercise is her favorite. I pressed her to tell me more about it, and she offers to actually take me through the exercise. You know the adage, "the teacher comes when the student is ready?" That day, I had found out 2 friends were facing life-changing surgery and I was facing some tough challenges with one of my kids at home, so it wasn't too difficult for me to conger up a stressful situation in my mind (ha!) I felt my stress go away as she taught me through this process how to disconnect myself from the situation. Earlier in the interview, Dr. Blevins talks about disconnecting herself from her illness, I found that to be one of my aha moments in this interview.
For those of us who use self-deprecating humor? Hold on until the end - Dr. Blevins will reveal two words to say that are magical. Self-Talk in 2 words at it's finest. Those 2 words? You'll have to listen to find out - but they are Profound.

Sun, 20 Jan 2019 - 37min - 189 - Ep0066 - "Profit 1st" with Mike Michalowicz
Struggling to make money with your business? Mike Michalowicz's mission is to end entrepreneurial poverty with smart systems you can implement RIGHT NOW.
Eradicate Entrepreneurial Poverty
What's so likable about Mike is he tells "our" story unabashedly - the story of the fool's journey we entrepreneurs embark on. Big dreamers and victims of incredible highs and decimating lows, Mike tells the story of how he crashed and burned - losing everything, and the humility of his young daughter bringing her piggy bank out to help save the family. Ouch...
Profit First
"The most afflicted community for depression is entrepreneurs." Mike says. I find myself nodding as he talks about his mission - to end entrepreneurial poverty starting with "Profit First." It's a brilliant system setting up your widget, service - whatever you're selling - so that you see profit FIRST from your very first sale. He employs "Parkinson's Law" where you only spend what's available. If you set up separate bank accounts to allocate your money into separate accounts, for example, "Operations," "Taxes," "Inventory" "Dividends," and "Profit," you can distribute the money so you're not mis-spending. So if your widget sells for $100, let's say $40 is how much it costs to make, then you have $60 to allocate toward your separate accounts. Gamechanger thinking for me - you'll hear my wheels turning in this interview as we touch on my company Vermont Chalky Paint and I've already started setting up my accounts this way. I asked Mike when he started to catch his stride in business and his answer had him reveal some juicy tidbits of what his next book will focus on - realizing your calling.
3 Stages of Business
Realizing your calling, seemed little more than fluff initially to me until Mike started mapping out the 3 stages of business - Survival to Shelter to Self-Actualization. I love when he breaks out business as an entity needing Oxygen (Sales) Nutrition (Profitability) Balance (Time). Once a business' basic needs are met, it can transition from Getting to GIVING. It made me eager to read his next book and re-read some parts in both Profit Firstand Clockwork. You definitely don't want to miss his "Profit First" podcast, he's had some wonderful guests including marketing queen Kim Walsh Phillips - (I'm a HUGE fan of hers.) she's the marketer for Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary.
Angel Investor A-Ha Moment
I've pitched a few times to investors and until hearing Mike, I'm ashamed to say, I really didn't know what to ask for. I kept getting the advice, "get as much as you can because it'll get harder and harder to get the money later on." Or, "It's gonna take a half million MINIMUM to get you going." but I never really mapped out exactly HOW MUCH is enough? As Mike speaks, author of the "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" series Robert Kiyosaki's words were in the back of my mind -"It's not what you make, it's what you keep."
He also offers that "Angel Investors don't bet on the horse, they bet on the jockey." They want your proven track record and clarity on how this money will give them their ROI back. He offers," The best use of Angel money is to fund something that's already working."
Mike goes on to say that as a business owner, "I'd rather have a company that does $70k a year if I'm taking home $50k, than a company that does a million dollars that I'm taking home $40k!" Now you can write a business plan that's actually meaningful instead of throwing spaghetti at the wall.

Sun, 06 May 2018 - 34min - 179 - Ep0052 - "Rich State of Mind" with Barbara Huson
Is financial instability a symptom of something far deeper? Barbara Huson, the daughter of the R in H&R Block, is a best-selling author and a beacon for financial savvy for women.
We talk about what inspired her to change her name from Barbara Stanny to Huson, and some of her "aha" moments in interviewing 6-7 and 8-figure women.
I've known Barbara for a few years and her story's incredible - she came back from a $1 MILLION tax bill and teaches other women how to calm their own financial demons. You can listen to the first episode here: (Episode 20 - Sacred Success.)
We talk about "aha" moments and one of mine in this episode was her quote from Carl Jung, "for better to come, good must stand aside." What does that mean? You've gotta read her blog, on the Magical Power of Letting Go - it's excellent. Have you ever held onto something so fiercely that it exhausts you? Have you been too afraid to let it go, even though you know it's for the best, but you hold on because of your fear? Yeah. It's THAT conversation. Brew a cup, this one you'll wanna sit down for. Barbara - as always, much love to you. Thanks for helping so many women transform the way we think about money.

Mon, 26 Mar 2018 - 27min - 176 - Ep0049 - "58 Acts of Kindness" with Beverly King
Beverly King survived the Las Vegas shooting which left 58 fellow concert goers dead and 851 injured. She's doing 58 acts of kindness each day in remembrance of those lost, to help her reconnect & heal.
She reached out to me through the WOKO Facebook page, explaining what had happened and how she felt isolated being in upstate New York while so many who had support were out west. The east coast survivors were scattered from Pennsylvania up to New York, but she felt very alone. She researched support groups and found the 58 Acts of Kindness group on Facebook and thought it would be a way to help heal from this senseless tragedy.
She came into one of our WOKO Big Change Roundup events inside the Walmart garden center, a cavernous building that must've brought up a bit of anxiety considering all she had been through. She stoically came in with a donation she made in honor of her 22nd act of kindness, Austin Meyer, who was only 24 years old when he lost his life. It appeared on a simple orange piece of paper and I shook when I held it. Maybe it was because my own son will be 24 in June, maybe because I wasn't expecting it - but it moved me to tears. And we both wept.
And I started to feel something we all need to feel more in this country - Connection. Community. Great loss and great admiration for a woman who was thrown unexpectedly into a war zone doing something as simple as watching a country music concert. But she will not back down; she persists. She WILL go to a concert again, and she's listening again to Jason Aldean's music and not allowing this to lay her low, but to bring her up, along with the rest of us.

Dr. Steve's been a good friend (he was my first guest on Self Talk Radio Show,) mentor and champion of all who do battle in the trenches of a world hostile to inner reflection. We're so busy trying to make it happen "out there," that we forget the secret to manifestation can only be found "in here." His follow-up to "Unhypnosis," "Buddha in the Trenches," does not disappoint.
I'm honored to have been asked to do the introduction and follow-up interview on his Audible version of "Buddha in the Trenches." I enjoy the audio version as a "pump me up" on my morning commute, coupled with the written word as my evening close. It's a simple book putting complicated ideas into bite-sized morsels peppered with quotes of can-do encouragement for the entrepreneurs, CEOs and all who battle in the trenches looking for a life of meaning.

There are those 2 AM aimless Facebook scrolls I do on occasion (okay, more than I like to admit…) that sometimes uncover real gold… this is one of those deals. I ran across a picture of Bernie Harberts, his mule, Polly, and “The Lost Sea Expedition.” He had me at hello… Bernie Harberts has done what many of us wish we could do - slowed down long enough to observe a sped-up world from the vantage point of a 21 square foot solar-powered wagon pulled by his mule, Polly. Armed with modest camera equipment, he filmed what he lived: tumbleweed gales, snow storms, the highs of Badlands Blue and the low of Prairie Fever. He lived with the people of the Great Plains and recorded their thoughts on film. That footage and those insights became the Lost Sea Expedition series. In our chat, he discusses some surprises he found out on the Great Plains - where farmland is plentiful, but people? Not so much. He shares what he uncovered about a wide variety of people and points of view. If you’ve been discouraged by the raging storm of dividing opinions - you can take solace in what Bernie’s experienced first-hand: we’re still a very United America.
