Since then, she's been a whirlwind of activity, quickly becoming a regular fixture in the buzzing Chapel Street circuit. Wed, 24 Jan 2024 - 1h 28min - 16 - MV016 Rakhi
MV016 Rakhi Rakhi has become notorious for her sexy, energy-building sets across Naarm. An expression of her unique style and identity, her sound is rhythmic, melodic, and bass-heavy, merging the genres she loves to get your hips swinging. With expansive selections, she brings her feminine, fairy-like touch to hard drums, breaks and basslines. Rakhi’s own productions combine her love of rhythm and big bass with emotional soundscapes, vocals and instrumentation. While you may have seen Rakhi throw down heat at one of Naarm’s parties, you’re just as likely to have heard the softer side of her sound at a northside bar or beer garden. Having quickly become a staple in the local electronic music scene, it is of no surprise that she was shortlisted for ‘Best DJ’ in the Music Victoria Awards 2023. Rakhi kicked off a big year at Zeerust Festival followed by an interstate debut in Eora for Kerfew X World Pride, honorary support for Pretty Girl’s sold out Naarm headline show, and an international debut at Kiosk Radio in Brussels. A Rakhi set will likely cover music from every continent, blend unlikely genres, and have you ask “what do you call this?” more than once. Carrying a perceptive ear and compelling ability to command the energy in any room, Rakhi is unstoppable in carving out space for her unique style. Tue, 05 Dec 2023 - 1h 39min - 15 - MV015 Sunshine
MV015 Sunshine Picture this- A dance floor you don’t want to leave. It’s heaving with an aura infectious to those still waiting out the front of the club. The energy is ablaze with electronic music devotees, smiles on faces and drinks in the air, where everyone unites and rejoices when the aptly named Sunshine graces those coveted decks. With an anthemic groove to hook you back in, the Melbourne DJ, producer and curator of Disco Faith Recordings strings together a renowned slew of nu disco, soulful house, jacking house, progressive house, Detroit techno and driving techno to make you want to get up and go out. Having taken to the turntables everyday, Sunshine garnered cheeky late night rave slots leading to iconic headline shows and it was evident that Melbourne was perfect for her. With 22 years as a DJ she has truly devoted herself to the house, disco and techno journey, watching Melbourne flock to her dance floor at Revolver Saturdays for the 7am Rise & Shine session every Saturday morning for 19 years, where she’s also played with the likes of Gary Beck, Radio Slave, Seth Troxler and Sven Vath. Sunshine’s residency at Poof Doof since 2012 has also been one for the record books. On the festival circuit, Sunshine has graced us with her radiating dose of hapno (happy house and techno), at Beyond The Valley, Splendour In The Grass, Piknic Electronik and Babylon alongside the likes of international pioneers Gorge, Amelie Lens, Horse Meat Disco and Butch. In 2016 Sunshine embarked on a different kind of sonic energy. Creating Sunshine and Disco Faith choir, she had a vision to fuse a club-ready DJ set with the uplifting energy of a 12 piece choir, making people rejoice. Selling out shows and welcoming the congregation, she went on to curate Disco Faith Recordings, delivering an energy, disco ambiance and underground hues to have the masses on their feet. In 2021, Sunshine’s ability to adapt and transform as a performer has gone from strength to strength. Whilst many slowed down, Sunshine beamed down on us all. Closing the coveted Sidney Myer Music Bowl for Piknic Electronik in January 2021 and headlining events such as infamous the Untitled day parties, The Breakfast Club, Poof Doof Sydney, Novel Classics and Xe54 plus her usual haunts. Lock in breakfast at Revolver Saturdays or claim a spot at a summer festival with a sneaky dose of dance floor bliss from Sunshine, and your weekend couldn't get any better. MV007 Casey Leaver Starting off behind the bar at many of Melbourne’s most happening venues, Casey spent years fine-tuning her skills into what gets a crowd moving. Making the move into events management and founding "Disco Volante'', one of the city's longest-running weekly club nights, she cut her teeth on the decks surrounded by some of the biggest names in music; both local and international heavyweights. Leavers' love for the origins of electronic music makes her the perfect fit at the best venues in Australia. It is well known that her versatility is shines through when she headlines the iconic queer event POOF DOOF, where she roams freely to play anything from 70s soulful disco to deep moody techno in front of hundreds of cult-like punters screaming her name. In late 2019, Casey was signed to Mike Toner's leading agency Thick As Thieves, where she has since gone from strength to strength and more recently, earning herself a Revolver Sundays residency. Casey now holds residencies at Revolver Upstairs, One Six One, Poof Doof and Tramp and she plays regular gigs across town from Glamorama to Circus. Thu, 26 May 2022 - 1h 38min - 6 - MV006 Kasey Taylor
MV006 Kasey Taylor One of the most loved names on the Australian dance music scene, Kasey Taylor made his mark DJing in his hometown of Melbourne before John Digweed scouted him in the mid-nineties to play at his infamous Bedrock night in London. That was the catalyst for Taylor to take his sound and production to a global audience, leading to international exposure and a permanent move to Europe to satiate the demands of his worldwide bookings. Currently, he is the creative power behind no less than three record labels. That includes the highly revered Vapour Recordings, the 24-year old mainstay which is over 150 releases deep and the offshoot imprint eVapour8, which topped the Beatport charts at number 1 for 8 weeks with its very first release. The most recent addition to his portfolio is Lo-Fi 45, which has seen Kasey take on a mentor role to use his years of experience to identify, sign and nurture local Australian talent. More recently Kasey is going through a resurgence, not only is he experiencing a personal and creative renaissance, but he has just completed a rebranding across the board. Vapour Recordings has just gone through a massive revamp which will include a new online portal, merchandise and more. That will also coincide with a release roster of new music that is already creating excitement with some of the scene’s biggest players. We’ve had covid, we’ve had bushfires, we’ve had the lot, but we can now reset, look to the future and that future is set for one of Australia’s most popular dance music artists to introduce himself to a brand new generation of dance music connoisseurs, and re- introduce him to his loyal followers. Thu, 27 Jan 2022 - 3h 22min - 2 - MV002 Sophie Forrest
MV002 Sophie Forrest Bridging the gap between untamed techno hues and nostalgic recollections of ultimate electro worlds, fused with jazz and soul notions, South African born artist, label owner and promoter SOPHIE FORREST lands her spot with finesse. Applying a musical palette that grasps varying influences, the air from Melbourne based Sophie Forrest is welcome, whether it be in the studio, before a dance floor or in the kitchen as a small-batch hot sauce aficionado. As one of the nation’s few transgender DJs and producers, she too champions trans-representation across the Australian dance community, celebrating equality, ambition and talent in music. Mid 2021 delivered Sophie Forrest’s well-crafted, two track EP ‘Potato’ on her self curated record label Body Positive Music, one of the first in Australia to focus entirely on supporting the GNC/trans/POC and femme community of producers. Earlier in the year her ‘Don’t Touch My Booty’ EP dropped, shortly after the debut release on her label coming from fellow artist Yokelust. Exploring untouched corners on dance floors throughout the electronic circuit in Melbourne and beyond, Sophie Forrest has taken her catalogue and pinned guest spots across the map, while also having supported the likes of global tastemakers including Honey Dijon, Ben UFO, Boris, Roi Perez and DJ Sprinkles.
