024 | Before we dove deep into the world of electrification and solar on farms we touched on Denmark's latest annoucement - the first country in the world to tax agri emissions but its not law yet! - will they make it further than anyone else? This week we had the epic Mike Casey from Forest Lodge Orchard and Rewiring Aotearoa co-hosting the pod with us. He is a "nerd" (of his own admission) in the world of electrification, he's blazing the trial right out front showing the rest of us what can be done. He's then very kindly sharing all his knowledge so we can learn and uptake as quickly as possible. This is an exciting conversation that really ignited the flame of opportunity and how farming can be a solution to the country!

Thu, 20 Jun 2024 - 33min - 21 - Sustainability - the missing puzzle piece?
020 | Are we in NZ sure we have the sustainability of our workforce covered? Can we honestly say that we use best practice in staff relationships and with Sharemilkers/Managers and Owners? Do we have the framework to support our farmers to be great in this area? And how do we measure our success or lack there of? Does this have the potential to be the underbelly of NZ Ag that is just waiting to be exposed? Will this cost us our Social Licence to operate? and be the next dirty dairy exposure?

018 | A new study out of the University of Portsmouth has shown that consumers value animal welfare over environmental impact when making purchasing decisions, Ben Purua has been awarded young Maori Dairy Farmer of the year at the Ahuwhenua awards recently, and Fonterra - why what and how - the selling of consumer brands.
This week we discuss farming for nature - is this NZ's next big unique selling point, can it put us ahead of the world if we get onboard quickly?

016 | A major Southland windfarm is to proceed through the new fast tracking consenting process, a survey examining the profitability and carbon footprints in regenerative agriculture, and the continuing decline in farm sales and prices all hit the news desk this week.
We delve Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, try to demystify the concept and provide a simple explanation that everyone can understand to reduce fear and empower everyone - rural and urban - to take action, if they so choose - or not but from an educated standing.
Additionally, we look ahead to the upcoming South Island Dairy Event (SIDE) at Lincoln University on June 25 and 25 - learn more here.

Thu, 16 May 2024 - 32min - 16 - Breaking down productivity and what it actually means, growing rice in glasshouses and meals in schools
015 | Our land and water have done more outstanding research, this time in the meals in school space and how this can connect children to agriculture (here), we jump the ditch and look at the effects of PFA contaminated water has on cattle and finally look at some very cool research out of China where they have grown rice successfully in less time in glasshouses, expanding the required growing conditions and therefore locations.
Inspired by the Institute of Directors seasonal magazine, we dig deep into productivity touching on commentary from regional economist Benje Patterson. Why does it matter? how can we improve?
Lastly we leave you with the challenge to do something nice for someone else - just cause - life feels a bit tough right now but lets brighten someone's day!
We also snuck in a wee promo to Jana Hocken of Lean Dairy and her fabulous work, well work checking out - https://theleandairyfarm.com/
