Wed, 13 Nov 2024 - 251 - The Kiwi Fitness App Making $80 Million Per Year: Adam El-Agez on ‘The Conqueror Challenges’
As some of you will know – this year we created a second podcast channel called Business in Between.
It’s a channel that documents our journey as business owners – and where we also host long-form interviews with NZ’s most interesting business leaders. And we’re sharing one of our favourite interviews on the Business in Between channel – with you here on Between Two Beers.
It’s the story of how a Kiwi entrepreneur turned an idea for a fitness goal setting app into a global business with customers in over 150 countries and revenue exceeding $80 million a year.
His name is Adam Al-Agez and his app is called The Conqueror.
Adam started his fitness goal setting app in 2012 after 10 years of being an entrepreneur with limited success.
The idea was relatively simple…instead of ‘just’ going for a run, walk, a ride or swim, you’re working towards a virtual fitness goal, immersed in community and with a tangible race medal delivered on completion.
But after six years and hundreds of thousands of dollars, the app was floundering.
All the signs were pointing to giving up all together and he even started getting his CV together and applying for jobs.
Then in a bizarre series of events, in 2019 he ended up hiring a marketing wiz who lived in Romania, to run the digital marketing.
Raul the Romanian immediately started growing sales and from an annual revenue of under $100k they grew to $2m in the first year.
The next year they did $40m and $75m in the following two, having secured licensing agreements with the Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Harry Potter
The business has now expanded globally with around 70 staff in 6 countries with customers in over 150 countries.
Adam’s story – and the growth of his company – is insane and the story will blow your mind - and it’s the first time it’s been told.
Come for the storytelling and stay for Adam’s brilliant business lessons at the end.
This is an ep not to be missed.
If you enjoy this pod – please go and follow and subscribe to our Business in Between channel, where there are plenty more like this.

Sun, 27 Oct 2024 - 247 - Andrew Mehrtens on Being “The Boy Next Door”, Court Sessions with Colin Meads & Playing with Jonah
Andrew Mehrtens is a legend of NZ Rugby and the second highest All Blacks point scorer of all time.
He’s also widely regarded as one of the most intelligent All Blacks and Sir Wayne Smith described him to us as a ‘genius’ on and off the field, who understood the game better than he did.
Universally known as Mehrts, in this episode we talk about what he’s been doing with his life abroad for the last 20 years, his new-born twins and his fluent French, his best “Suzie” and Jonah Lomu stories from 1995, reflections on the recent loss of his father, the Crusaders and pulling the fingers in South Africa, punditry, family, and all the best yarns in between.

She’s also just released her book and in it we discover a different side of Bree, she writes about some of the most difficult and challenging chapters of her life, and in this episode she talks about it all publicly for the first time.
Steve messaged Bree halfway through reading her book to say how captivating and powerful it was – and how many people it’s going to help. And I've got no doubt you'll see it too by the end of this one.
We hear about the home invasion at her nan’s place when she was nine, where she thought she was going to die – and how it contributed to anxiety and panic attacks throughout her life, we talk about her challenges revealing her sexuality to her dad – and why she kept it a secret for 10 years, her big life regrets and journey of discovery with ADHD as an adult and where her sense of social justice comes from.

Craig Fenton is the CEO of New Zealand Rugby Commercial which means it’s his job to drive the business of the All Blacks, Black Ferns and other teams in black.

He owns a record label and a film production company, he has his pilot’s license, he was a lawyer, he worked at Google for six years, he hosted his own podcast and he’s on the cutting edge of all the latest trends and developments with AI and technology.
And he’s a great chat.

Craig is a larger-than-life character, energetic, into technology – in fact he’s a self-titled geek who is an exceptionally hard worker. He’s lived a pretty exceptional life so far but you get the feeling the next chapter might be his best.

Sun, 04 Aug 2024 - 228 - What’s an Accidental Business Owner? Introducing our new Podcast Series with Di Foster
We have a new show! And you can find it by searching 'Business in Between' in your podcast app.
It's a podcast about business, life, mindset, relationships and the inside story of a pretty wild last 12 months.
My name is Steve Holloway and alongside my best mate Seamus Marten, we started a podcast called Between Two Beers nearly five years ago in my Hamilton garage.
In quite a surreal series of events, it’s turned into our fulltime job – and along with the podcast we’ve also started two side businesses.
One is B2B Speakers – which brings the guests you hear on Between Two Beers to your live event as MCs or Speakers, and the other is called Reflections where our storytellers are available for hire to capture your families' private stories to pass down through generations.
In November last year, I was feeling pretty overwhelmed with what my new world was looking like, and so I connected with a business coach who specializes in helping Accidental Business Owners find their way.
Her name is Di Foster – and as you'll soon discover, she’s a bit of a weapon.
This podcast tells our story, and hers - because shes been juggling parenthood, wellness and a growing business also. It all comes out in these 30 minute, live coaching sessions.
Through the series there are laughs, tears and some pretty brutal honesty - but it's something we're all really proud of.
Hope you enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wed, 24 Jul 2024 - 225 - Sione Faumuina Reflects on NRL Career & Issues with Alcohol - “I Could’ve Been One of The Greatest”
Sione Faumuina played 132 NRL matches for the Warriors, Cowboys and Raiders, had two stints in the UK Super League and played two times for the Kiwis.
But his career was a troubled one.He had the potential to be one of the greatest sporting talents this country has produced, but was instead consumed by alcohol and erratic behaviour.
After retiring aged 28, Sione had almost nothing to show for a decade as a professional league player, estimating that he had earned more than a million dollars in that time.
In this episode we talk about hitting rock bottom and how he has rebuilt his life as a business owner and father of four, how he made the NRL 18 months after he started playing league, his relationship with alcohol and all his lowest moments at the Raiders and Warriors, going sober, unlocking his story by writing a book and how he’s now using his life lessons to help others.
Sione’s story is gripping and - he tells it really well. We go into a lot of detail about some really difficult times in his career, and at this stage of his life he’s an open book – his drive in sharing is to help others learn from his mistakes.
And his story is not finished yet.

Sun, 21 Jul 2024 - 224 - Eliza McCartney on 2024 Olympic Preparation, Injury Rehabilitation & Mental Health Challenges (re-release)
This week we're rewinding the clock back to August of 2022 when we sat down with Eliza McCartney.
Eliza is a professional pole vaulter and one of the very best in the world.
At the time of recording, her career had stalled after an unfortunate run of injuries.
She'd burst onto the scene as a 19-year old, taking home bronze from the Rio Olympics, before winning silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and smashing indoor and outdoor Oceania records. But then the setbacks started.
In this episode we talked about the mental and physical struggle of dealing with her injuries - and how she was rebuilding, going to school with Lorde, the time she accidentally stumbled on a nude beach, why her coach made her tell a joke each week, her rise to the top of the pole vaulting world and the whirlwind of fame that followed her Olympic bronze.Today, aged 27, she's back to full fitness and has qualified for the Paris Olympics - where she will compete in August.
Eliza is such good company and we both really loved this chat. In the second half we go quite deep on the injury situation, and you’ll get a really clear picture of what a tough few years it had been for her. This was her first ever podcast appearance, and we’re really grateful she came on to share her story.
We’re also super stoked to tell you about the business we’ve built. If you’d like to hire one of our incredible guests to speak at or MC your event, check out our epic lineup at B2Bspeakers.co.nz and get in touch.

Brooke’s life story actually needs a long-form podcast to do it justice – and to cover all his twists and turns.
He was an X Games medalist, who at 19 co-created Senate, a skate company that was turning over $14m a year, while touring with Tony Hawk and Matt Hoffman. He lost it all, moved to NZ, opened the legendary Pony nightclub in Auckland, was a star on TV3’s hit show Target and has been the Organiser of many of New Zealand's largest national televised fundraisers – collectively raising over 10 million in the last decade.
These days, he describes himself as a Futurist and has co-founded several groundbreaking companies focused on the emerging creator economy, Web3 and the metaverse.
There’s just so much goodness in this one, from Brooke’s role in the All Blacks’ 2007 demise, to how he got Taika Waititi and Joel Little to collab, to all the best stories from his Pony Nightclub, where Lady Gaga, Tommy Lee and Elle Macpherson would visit.Brooke is an open book and this was such a fun chat filled with a ton of laughs. Sun, 23 Jun 2024 - 218 - The Mindset Coach who Outlived Terminal Cancer Diagnosis - Di Foster (Low Key Legend)
Di Foster is one of our low-key legends, who works as a business coach, mindshifter and speaker.
We connected with Di late last year as we were transitioning from employees to accidental business owners – and were looking for a wise head to help guide us through some pretty unknown waters.
We found Di, who had recently helped former guest Dave Wood transform his business into the juggernaught it is today, and she quickly became our business coach and mentor. Within an hour of meeting her – we knew we would one day tell her story on the podcast. And here she is.
In this episode we talk about the lessons learned from becoming a blackbelt in Karate, what she saw in Dave Wood’s business and how she helped him, some of the most interesting interactions we’ve had in the six months we’ve worked together and all the best lessons and advice acquired from 30 years working, building and coaching in the business space.
Di also has an incredible cancer story.
14 years ago she was diagnosed with terminal, secondary, breast cancer. She was given a 0% chance of surviving 12 months. She turned her back on traditional treatment and healed herself. She experienced a radical remission.
Her cancer journey doesn’t define her, but it certainly guides her work. She has been transformative in our short journey as business owners, and we can’t wait to share her story with you.
You'll love this one.
We're also super stoked to announce that Di has joined us at B2B Speakers and is available to share her insights and story at your function or event. Also check out our epic lineup of former guests available for hire too – go to b2bspeakers.co.nz.

Wed, 12 Jun 2024 - 216 - Steve Tew, Ex-CEO of NZ Rugby on Career Highlights, Biggest Regrets, Leadership Lessons & More!
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Steve Tew.
These days Steve is a director with High Performance Sport New Zealand, but he’s best known for being the CEO of New Zealand Rugby from 2008-2019.
He was the boss when New Zealand held all four World Cups (men's, women's and two sevens), he guided the code through the Respect and Responsibility Review, inked critical sponsorship deals with Adidas and AIG, as well as a 5-year broadcast deal. In short, his administrative legacy in rugby in NZ may be unmatched. In this episode we talk about his relationship with Steve Hansen and that time they discovered Richie McCaw, court-sessions in the 90s and how he connected with players, observations of the Professor Wayne Smith, lessons in leadership and all the best stories in between.
Steve has been very careful to stay away from commenting on rugby since leaving his pressure post and has refused all interviews on or off record when issues have arisen. His view is that ex-CEOs are just that, ex, and should not be heard, so we didn’t touch on today’s current hot-potato issues like the NZR governance spat or the future shape of professional rugby competitions.
But this was a cracking chat, and an exclusive insight into the makings of one of NZ sport's best leaders.
Steve is ultra Kiwi-authentic, whip-smart and as comfortable in the All Blacks dressing room as he was in World Rugby’s board.
You’ll love this one. We’re also super stoked to tell you about the business we’ve built. If you’d like to hire one of our incredible guests to speak at or MC your event, check out our epic lineup at B2Bspeakers.co.nz and get in touch.

Wed, 29 May 2024 - 213 - Matt Heath on ‘A Life Less Punishing’ - Mortality, Pinot Wahs & Working with Jeremy Wells
Matt Heath was one of the first ‘big names’ that gave us his time when we just starting out in the podcast game, and this week, coinciding with the release of his new book "A Life Less Punishing" we thought it was a great time to get him back on.
Matt is an actor, producer, sports commentator, columnist, musician and radio host and now author, and can be heard hosting the Radio Hauraki breakfast radio show alongside Jeremy Wells, as well as commentating on the Alternative Commentary Collective.
This is a really cool episode that covers a lot of ground. We talk about creating deeper friendships, gratitude and finitude, the current and future state of the media, loss and grief and writing a column a week for 10 years for the Herald.
We've always been huge fans of Matt, the way his brain works and his outlook on life. And this was such an awesome conversation - we loved it.

Sun, 26 May 2024 - 212 - Inside the Mind of Dame Lisa Carrington: NZ’s Most Decorated Olympian
On this episode of Between two Beers we’re rewinding the clock back to February of 2023 when we sat down with Dame Lisa Carrington.
This was a really cool chat with arguably New Zealand’s greatest athlete and we wanted to re-share it with all our new listeners.
Lisa is New Zealand’s most successful Olympian of all time with five Olympic gold medals in the sprint Kayak, one bronze and 12 World Championship titles.
For over a decade, Lisa has been the best in the world at her sport and after listening to this conversation it will become clear why.
We go deep inside the mind of a champion and talk about her relationship with self-doubt and high performance, why she hasn’t missed training in 13 years, and how she deals with race-day pressure. We also hear about her passport slip-ups, gym playlists, superstitions, the power of journalling, and all the best and most entertaining stories from a life on the road.Seamus and I were mesmerized by this chat in places. It's so rare you get such an extended period of time to probe away at the inner workings of the very best in the world, and Lisa’s discipline, thought process, and ability to articulate how she succeeds was really, really cool.

Wed, 08 May 2024 - 209 - He Survived an Eruption on Mt. Ruapehu: William Pike’s Inspirational Story (Low Key Legend)
William Pike is one of our low-key legends who is a world-class story teller, with an exceptional story to tell.
In 2007 he was guiding a friend to the summit of Ruapehu when the mountain erupted. As a layer of rocks, water and mud rained down on his Dome shelter, he was crushed and critically injured.
When he next woke up in hospital, his leg was gone. Doctors called William’s survival a miracle, but his crushed right leg had to be amputated below the knee. After a long series of surgeries and a gruelling rehabilitation, William learned to walk again with a prosthetic limb – and what he’s done with his life since is equally remarkable and inspiring.
This episode is gripping. William’s harrowing account of being trapped on the mountain, anticipating death will stick with you. The community that rallied to save and support him in the rescue and rehab will warm your heart – and how he’s used the adversity to thrive in life will inspire.

Dave Wood is best known as being Israel Adesanya’s breathing and mindset coach – and was one of our favourite, and most popular, guests in 2023.
He runs a two-day Calm Under Pressure workshop in Piha and the course – and his work has a strong connection to the show.
Steve went on it last year, it’s where he was inspired by Jemarl Paerata’s story and we had him on the show as a guest – and this month Seamus attended it.
We spend the first 15 mins in this one unpacking the weekend and what Seamus got from it, before digging into what Dave’s been up to for the last year.We talk about the incredible growth and success of his business, the key to finding balance in a busy life, the importance of being selfish – and prioritizing yourself, how he helped the world’s best squash player, training the Warriors and why understanding the impact of your thinking, emotions and actions is pivotal to achieving personal growth.
If you’re interested in Dave’s epic life story and the first 40 years of his life, I’d highly recommend going back to listen to the ep we recorded with him in February of 2023.

Welcome to episode #2 of the Business in Between podcast.
This week we’re re-visiting our chat with Dion Nash from 2022 where we talked about his transition from professional sportsman to business owner.
The original recording of this episode went for two hours, with the first 90 minutes focused on his upbringing, family and his professional cricket career.
We’re going to join the action on the home-straight, where we switch to his business journey – and it’s a compelling 30 minutes.
Dion talks about his first job out of cricket and his idea to sell bottled water, how he became marketing director for 42 below and his journey working for Bacardi, why he left and how he had the courage to start his own business, Triumph and Disaster.

Wed, 10 Apr 2024 - 202 - Awen Guttenbeil: The Highs & Lows of the NZ Warriors, Doing the Haka for the Queen & More!
Awen Guttenbeil was suggested to us 18 months ago as a guest with ‘serious depth’.
And he did not disappoint.
In fact, we loved this ep so much we’re re-releasing it this week for all those who may have missed it a year ago.You may know Awen as one of New Zealand’s greatest rugby league players, with 170 caps for the Warriors over a professional career that spanned 15 years. What you might not know, is that in the first five years of his career he spent more time under general anesthetic then he did on the field.
In this episode we talk about the mental toll of 60 hours under GA and how he got his career back on track, the hustle, grind and drive to set up his thriving business career post footy, reflections on the Warriors’ most famous scraps, the best end of year trip stories, why he didn’t fancy a career as a broadcaster, meeting the queen, what he’s learned as a dad, golf, what the next chapter looks like and much much more.
This ep was really special. Awen is such an eloquent speaker with a lifetime of important lessons to share. We asked him some ‘big picture’ questions at the end, and the impromptu, thoughtful, articulate answers blew us away. You'll love this one.
We’re also super stoked to tell you about the business we’ve built. Sir Ian has lived one hell of a life.
He was the lead singer of a rock band, he served in the army, worked at a brewery, studied law, became a kids presenter for TVNZ, then a TV star, before setting up his own production company.
Today, he’s one of New Zealand’s top business leaders. Wed, 27 Mar 2024 - 199 - Mark Stafford: 20 Years at the TAB, Surviving Tragic Car Crash, MS Diagnosis & Testicular Cancer
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Mark Stafford.
This ep is really special. There's just so much goodness in here.
Staffy is a radio host, who is best known as the former face of the TAB, where he spent two decades as a bookmaker and broadcaster.
But what's not so well-known is his roller-coaster ride through life with all its twists and turns.
In this episode we talk about how he died in a car accident, before being brought back to life, beating cancer, getting diagnosed with MS and found his way to the TAB. He shares his best match-fixing stories, we talk about the legend of Steel Balls and all the most incredible yarns from being NZ's premier oddsmaker.
We also talk about the devastating year of 2020, where he lost his job, his sister and his best friend in a short period of time. How he built himself back up, the friendships and lessons he leaned on and his reflections towards the end of this one - make it one of the greats.
Staffy is such a lovely bloke, who's been through it all. He was incredibly candid and raw in this chat, and when you mix that up with being one of the best storytellers in NZ, made it one of our favs.
We're also super stoked to have Staffy on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to www.b2bspeakers.co.nz.

Sun, 24 Mar 2024 - 198 - Lauren Rae: Fighting Terminal Cancer Diagnosis, Commonwealth Games Experience & More!
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Lauren Rae.
I don't say this lightly, but this is one of the most powerful eps we've done.
Lauren is one of our Low Key Legends, who's currently in the fight of her life against melanoma.
After going to the Commonwealth Games as a weightlifter, Lauren was given a terminal cancer diagnosis for a rare non-sun related melanoma which contained a gene called BRAF v600e.
Despite having the melanoma surgically removed Lauren was told the cancer cells had spread to her lymph nodes, and that should she decide to join the clinical trial at Auckland Hospital, the doctors didn't think it would be of any use.
Staring mortality in the face, Lauren questioned her diagnosis. She chose to fight, seeking second and third opinions that eventually opened the door to hope and led her family to going all in on Australia.
Within a week of speaking to her Brisbane Oncologist, Lauren's family sold their car, took leave without pay and told their three and five year old, they were off on holiday.
The powerful part is what happened next, Lauren's outlook and approach to life, the wisdom she's accrued and the spirit she's bringing to this fight.
This is an ep you won't forget. Lauren is an exceptional storyteller and her journey is a real perspective shifter. If you've been inspired by any guests we've had on the show, and would like them to speak at your function or event, check out our epic lineup at B2Bspeakers.co.nz

Wed, 13 Mar 2024 - 196 - Megan Compain: NZ’s First Pro Basketball Player in the USA & All Blacks' New Commercial Manager
Megan Compain is the newly appointed All Blacks commercial manager, whose back story is as impressive as her new role.
She was the first Kiwi to play professional basketball in the USA and the only one to play in the WNBA, had three pro seasons in Europe, and represented New Zealand for 10 years and at two Olympic Games.
She also has an extensive 20-year career in the sports industry, including a long history with New Zealand Rugby - and is the partner and director of her own creative agency in Wellington.
In this episode we talk about leaving Whanganui for the US as a 16-year-old, life as a professional basketballer, Partying with Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Mark Cuban, managing NZ Rugby’s commercial obligations, her parenting journey and relationship with Razor.Megan also addresses the enduring impact of the abuse of trust and grooming she suffered as a teenager at High School the US. It’s the first time Megan has opened up publicly on some of the most difficult parts of her journey, and we’re so grateful she shared her story – to help others who may be in a similar situation.
This was such a cool chat, which effortlessly bounced from heartfelt to hilarious. Megan’s energy and outlook on life are contagious; we really loved this one.

Sun, 10 Mar 2024 - 195 - Jesse Mulligan: “We’re the Last Generation of TV Presenters”, Positive Masculinity & More!
Jesse Mulligan is one of New Zealand’s best, and highest profile broadcasters – and a man that can do it all.
He’s been a standup comic, TV producer, writer, PR man, food reviewer, radio announcer and he’s even a trained lawyer.
But he’s best known for reaching huge audiences both on his afternoon show at Radio NZ, and his stints at Seven Sharp and the Project, where he fronted the show for seven years before it shut down in 2023.
This interview was recorded two weeks before the shocking announcement that Newshub is set to close – and while we discussed the future of TV and the jobs in it, no one had any idea what was to come.
Jesse was incredible company and such a thoughtful, interesting guest. We talked about his most interesting interviews, Matt and Jerry, his path through comedy and TV, the axing of the Project, what he’ll do next and much, much more.
This was a really fun one, hope you enjoy.

Wed, 28 Feb 2024 - 193 - Zion Armstrong: From West Auckland to Adidas President, Working with Kanye, Lionel Messi & Pharrell
Strap in, because this one’s an epic.
Zion Armstrong's story starts in West Auckland and involves running away from the police so fast that he started an athletics career that took him to the Commonwealth Games. At the same time, he was selling sport shoes – and at the age of 24 was head of footwear at adidas NZ.
From that toehold he climbed the corporate ladder before becoming president for Adidas North America where he oversaw 12,500 staff, inked deals with some of the world's biggest sports and music stars and took annual profit to a record $US6 billion after a couple of years. Here Armstrong can name-drop some ultra-impressive dealings, playing a link role in facilitating Inter Miami's signing of Lionel Messi, securing Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on an Adidas promotional contract, and working on projects with Grammy award-winning rapper Pharrell Williams.
And then finally, in 2022, Armstrong walked away from this rock-and-roll lifestyle and returned to New Zealand in pursuit of being a better dad in the wake of his divorce, not wanting his children to experience the same disconnect he had often endured as a kid.
We cover all the detail in this one – and it’s one heck of a ride. Zion’s inspirational story shows what’s possible with the right mindset and work ethic – and his decision to walk away shows what's really important in life. You’ll love this one. We're also super stoked to have Zion on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to share his story, or one of our other epic guests, at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Thu, 15 Feb 2024 - 190 - Grant Fox: Lessons From Fatherhood & Friendship with Sir Martin Crowe, Remembering First Rugby World Cup
On this episode of Between Two Beers we’re rewinding the clock back two years to when we sat down with Grant Fox.
Grant is one of the best to have ever worn the All Blacks 10 jersey and is still regarded as one of the finest goal-kickers of all time.
At the time of recording, Grant was in his final weeks as an All Blacks selector and in the process of pulling down the curtain on a 40-year career with New Zealand Rugby.
We covered all the most insightful parts of his rugby career, his business, his relationship with Ryan and some of his best stories from travelling with his golf superstar son.
He also talks about his 40-year friendship with the late Sir Martin Crowe and his important work with Big Buddies and the importance of being present with your kids.
This was one of our favourite episodes and we’re really excited to share it with our new listeners. Grant broke the stereotype of stoic rugby man, with passages of real vulnerability and openness. If you didn’t catch it the first time around you’re in for a treat.

Wed, 06 Dec 2023 - 175 - Thomas Nabbs: Founder of The Waterboy, Giving Opportunities to Kiwi Kids (Low-Key Legend)
Thomas is one of our Low Key Legends and is the founder of The Waterboy - a Hamilton based not-for-profit organisation that uses sport and education to help disadvantaged youths.
His charity helps connect business sponsors with people, mostly children, to help them overcome barriers related to getting involved in sport, be it finance, family dysfunction, disability, family violence and sexuality. He's helping to create stronger people and communities, but that’s only part of his story.
In this episode we unpack the origin story of The Waterboy, the loss of his parents and the impact it had on him, lessons from David Galbraith, his marathon mishap when guiding a vision impaired runner, the beauty of cricket umpiring and some of the best stories from the huge amount of kids that have had their lives enriched thanks to Thomas.
Thomas' work is so important in NZ where the gap between the haves and the have nots is growing. He cares, deeply, and has created a vehicle to help. His vision is to create stronger communities in NZ and he’s just at the start of his journey – but he’s already doing it.

Sun, 03 Dec 2023 - 174 - Lani Daniels’ Unexpected Path to Becoming a World Champion Boxer
Lani Daniels is a World champion boxer who holds the IBF heavyweight title and will this weekend aim to add the Light Heavyweight title to her collection, making her the first Kiwi woman in history to hold two world titles at different weights.

This was a really cool ep. Lani Daniels is authentically Lani. She’s a genuinely lovely person, with a gentle soul and infectuous laugh, who just happens to also be one of the best fighters in the world.
Her path to the top was filled with adversity, discipline and support, and it’s a story everyone should hear.

Sun, 05 Nov 2023 - 168 - Abbas Nazari: Escaping the Taliban, The Tampa Affair, Becoming a Best-Selling Author
Strap in, because this is one of the craziest stories we’ve told.
When the Taliban were at the height of their power in 2001, Abbas Nazari's parents were faced with a choice: stay and face persecution in their homeland of Aghanistan, or seek security for their young children elsewhere.
Abbas’ family chose to leave, and what happened next formed the storyline for his best selling book After The Tampa.
Abbas talks about escaping the Taliban as a young child, being adrift at sea as a refugee for weeks, the makings of the largest maritime rescue in modern history, which turned into an international standoff and finding home in Aoteraroa.
Then after arriving in NZ as an eight year old who spoke no English, Abbas went on to place third in the New Zealand Spelling Bee a few years later, played rep rugby, graduated from the University of Canterbury, was awarded a Fulbright scholarship in Washington DC and now owns two gyms and is one of NZ’s most in-demand speakers.
Abbas is a world-class storyteller, with one of the most incredible tales to tell. This was one of our favourite episodes we’ve done, and a real perspective shifter.

Sun, 29 Oct 2023 - 167 - Sir Wayne Smith on All Blacks Career & Culture, Black Ferns, Future of Rugby
Sir Wayne Smith is one of the most respected and accomplished figures in New Zealand Rugby history – an absolute legend of the game.
He was a 17-cap All Black who went on to win three World Cups - two as All Blacks assistant coach, and one with the Black Ferns.
He’s also been the All Blacks coach, won four Super Rugby titles as a coach, two with the Crusaders and two with the Chiefs, and currently works as the Performance coach to both the All Blacks and Black Ferns.
In this episode we talk about the differences between coaching men and women, what rule changes he’d like to see in the game, why he was sacked as All Blacks coach and the hardest moments of his career in 2007, his fair tale ride with the Black Ferns, where his resilience comes from and much, much more.
There’s a reason Wayne is considered one of World Rugby’s greatest thinkers, and this was a fascinating insight into how his brain works. It was a real honour getting to share so much of his time, and it’s easy to see why his players are all so connected to him as a person and a coach.

Sun, 15 Oct 2023 - 164 - Jemarl Paerata: Finding Purpose After Hitting Rock Bottom (Lowkey Legend)
On this episode of Between Two Beers, we talk to Jemarl Paerata.
Jemarl was the inspiration for starting our Low Key Legends series. I heard him speak during a presentation at Dave Wood’s Calm Under Pressure workshop earlier this year, and was immediately captivated and knew we had to get him in for a chat.
These days, Jemarl is as a motivational mentor and the founder of Te Kaiarahi –where he inspires people to reach their full potential based on Te Ao Maori principals and connecting back to nature.
But his journey there has been one hell of a ride.
In this episode we talk about why his dad was sentenced to 30 years at the Bangkok Hilton in 1991, and how he tried to get him out, his 20-year career as a professional firefighter and the trauma and darkness associated with the job, his relationship with alcohol, hitting rock bottom and how he pulled himself out of his hole, discovering his purpose, starting his own business and realising his vision.
Jemarl is just at the start of his journey helping and building community. But his story is one that needs to be heard.

Wed, 04 Oct 2023 - 162 - Jack Tame: The Perfect Interview, Grilling Winston Peters, Lessons from Hosking (Re-Release)
On this episode of Between Two Beers we’re rewinding the clock back to April of 2022 when we sat down with Jack Tame.
Jack is journalism’s Swiss Army Knife – a guy that does it all. He’s been a Breakfast host, a 6pm news reader, he hosts one of NZ’s biggest radio shows on Newstalk ZB, is a columnist for the NZ Herald, has moderated live election debates, now hosts TVNZ’s Q and A and has seen more, and experienced more of the world – than any 36-year-old we know.
In this episode we talk about how he was given Paul Holmes’ radio job on ZB at the age of 25 with no radio experience, *That* interview with Winston Peters where Jack was called James – about 10 times, the time he was recording live TV while fearing for his fathers life, dancing with Beyonce, covering Trump, why he left Breakfast TV, the things you don’t know about MIke Hosking and so much more.
This was one of our favourite episodes and one we wanted to share with new listeners of the podcast. Jack is, in my opinion, the best political interviewer in the country and his razor sharp mind and quick wit made this one a lot of fun.

Sun, 01 Oct 2023 - 161 - Steve Price Reflects on Rugby League Career, Losing his Father, Sonny Fai and more!
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Steve Price.
Steve is a legend of rugby league on both sides of the Tasman. In Australia he played 222 games for the Bulldogs and 16 for Australia before moving to New Zealand in 2005 to captain the Warriors.
Steve’s impact on New Zealand transcended rugby league where he racked up 91 caps for the Warriors across four years, but also opened a supermarket in Waipu, coached rugby league at Mt Albert Grammar school and became a pillar of his community, which was recognised when he was appointed a Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 2010.
In this episode we talk about Steve’s high-achieving family, and how two of his kids are now professional athletes, the tragic loss of his father to suicide last year and how it impacted him, what makes a good leader, and how he navigated challenges across his career like the scandals that enveloped the Bulldogs and the loss of Sonny Fai at the Warriors, *That* Origin fight, behind the scenes of the Supermarket business, Celebrity Treasure Island and ,much, much more.
Steve may well be NZ’s favourite Australian, and after listening to this it will be easy to see why. He’s achieved incredible success in all facets of his life and has so much brilliant wisdom to share. This was a really special one.

Wed, 20 Sep 2023 - 159 - Chris Wood: $50 Million Kiwi in the English Premier League
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Chris Wood.
Chris is one of New Zealand’s best football players of all time, with over 200 English Premier League appearances and more than 50 goals.
In 2022 he became the EPL’s most expensive 30-year-old in Premier League history when his move from Burnley to Newcastle cost $NZD 50 million.
At the start of this year he joined Nottingham Forrest where he currently plays, along with the All Whites – where he’s captain, leading all time goal scorer and best player.
In this episode we talk about his challenging journey to the top, what makes a good coach vs a great coach, what life is like inside a Premier League dressing room, best players he’s played with and against, making his EPL debut as a 17-year-old, why he got booed at Leeds and the mental affect it had on him, the art of scoring goals and much, much more.
This was Chris’s first every long-form podcast and was such an insightful look behind the scenes of what it takes to get to the top in football.

Sun, 17 Sep 2023 - 158 - Hamish Pinkham: Rhythm & Vines Co-Founder, Crazy Artist Stories, Almost Losing it All
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Hamish Pinkham.
Hamish is a lawyer, entrepreneur and musician, but is best known for being the co-founder and director of Rhythm and Vines - New Zealand's premier live music festival.
In 2003 Hamish and his two roommates at the University of Otago decided to host a party for their friends in a Gisborne vinyard.
The story of what’s happened since then is quite remarkable.
In this episode we talk through the 21-year journey of R and V highs and lows, from fears of losing it all, to having 30,000 revellers at its peak. We hear the best behind-the-scenes stories from experiences with Public Enemy and Chance the Rapper, the wildest riders, his hustlers mentality, the time he tried standup comedy, and all the business lessons he learned along the way.
What Hamish has built and achieved over the last two decades is seriously impressive. But after talking to him – it’s easy to see how. He’s smart, fun, driven and extremely personable. This was a really fun ep.

Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 156 - Russell Packer: From Prison to an MBA, 13 Years in the NRL, and more!
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Russell Packer.
Russell is a former rugby league player who played for the Warriors, Tigers, Dragons and Kiwis across a 13-year professional career in the NRL.
After retiring from league two years ago, Russell returned to NZ with his family and is now a businessman, leading a property development project in his hometown of Foxton.
Russell’s footy career was divided by one major incident. In 2013 he was sentenced to two years in prison for assaulting a man outside a pub in Sydney.
It’s a definitive part of Russell’s story, and the impressive man he is today is reflective of the lessons he learned about himself through his darkest days.
We talk about what happened that night in Sydney, how he passed the time in jail and how it changed him, how he got back into the NRL and became a senior leader, *that* time he pissed his pants for the Warriors, his MBA journey and thirst for learning, the realities of raising an autistic son, volunteering in the community and giving back.
Unfortunately we had a slight technical glitch about a quarter-way through the pod and lost some of the chat about his childhood and the Warriors – which you will later hear referenced.
Russell’s life has been one hell of a ride and the thing that stuck with me on this one is his appetite for self-improvement. His thirst for learning and growing, and being a better man is really impressive. If you only know Rusty from a headline, this ep will change your perception of the man. We’re so proud to be able to tell his story.

Sun, 03 Sep 2023 - 155 - Sarai Bareman: FIFA’s First Chief Women’s Football Officer, Corruption & Sexism, Eugene Bareman’s Success
On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Sarai Bareman.
Sarai is one of the most powerful, and influential women in world sport.
She has been FIFA’s chief women’s football officer since 2016, when the role was first created.
Her mandate included doubling the sport's global female player base from 30 million to 60 million and she's ultimately responsible for all levels of the game – from grassroots through to elite international competition – across 200 countries. Quite a big gig.
In this episode we talk about her relationship with her brother, UFC superstar coach Eugene Bareman – and their humble beginnings, the chaos and stress caused by the Auckland shootings on the morning of the first World Cup game in NZ, how she worked her way up from a bank teller in West Auckland to the biggest job in women’s football, the misogyny, corruption and abuse she encountered along the way and all the best ‘pinch yourself’ moments from her epic rise.
This one was pretty special – and after making it to the end – you'll be able to see why Sarai holds the position she does.
She’s sharp, articulate, empathetic – and perhaps most importantly, authentic. There’s no Fifa talking points in this one, it’s Sarai Bareman as you’ve never heard her before. One of our all time fav eps.

Dean is one of New Zealand’s biggest and best events promoters. The many credits to his name include David Tua v Shane Cameron, Fight For Life, Joseph Parker, the Auckland nines, Manny Pacqiou v Jeff Horne and many, many more.
He was also a former professional rugby league player with the Canberra Raiders and the Kiwis, before he retired at 26 and did breakfast radio in New Zealand for over a decade.
There’s a lot to unpack in the life of Dean.
In this episode we talk about his biggest business failures and how he ended up $1.8million in debt, what happened at DUCO and why he walked away, the art of selling, the Morning Pirates on radio Hauraki, Fight For Life, family and fatherhood.
This was a super engaging and entertaining chat. Dean has lived one hell of a life and has an endless supply of great yarns from working with the biggest names in NZ and Aussie sport.
