Mon, 01 Jul 2024 - 15min - 33 - PRESS OFFICER | WorldTour Communication Coach and Storyteller
In our series profiling the team behind the riders, it’s all about communication activations, social media, partner marketing campaigns, and mental health awareness.
You might have caught a glimpse of today’s guest in the background during rider interviews at races and Grand Tours. His name is Phil Lowe, Press Officer for one of the sport’s biggest and most historical WorldTour cycling teams, Soudal Quick-Step.
I brought Phil on to the show because I believe many of us often find ourselves sitting on our couches, watching cycling races, Grand Tours, Classics, and Monuments, and wondering: what really happens behind the scenes at a WorldTour team? How do they handle the pressure from the outside world, especially in today’s always-on social media environment, where a PR disaster can strike at any moment?
Not to mention, they’ve got to plan, execute, and coordinate communication activations, social media, partner marketing campaigns, and more.
We also talk about the team’s mental health awareness campaign and the need to break the stigma surrounding mental health in sports and daily life. We conclude the interview by discussing the future of professional cycling and the changes we would like to see in the sport.
I hope you’ll enjoy the episode.

Tue, 18 Jun 2024 - 28min - 32 - THE FASTEST SPRINTER DUO | Tim Merlier and Bert Van Lerberghe
Born just 31 days apart in the autumn of 1992, Soudal Quick-Step's Tim Merlier and Bert Van Lerberghe are a duo whose fates have long been connected.
In the first bunch sprint of the 2024 Giro d'Italia, Tim Merlier made history by becoming the first Belgian in 46 years to win three stages in a single edition of the Giro d’Italia. With help from his childhood friend Bert Van Lerberghe, who ramped up the speed under the flamme rouge to guide Tim to the final meters.
Less than a week after their unforgettable Giro d’Italia, the Belgian duo triumphed again at the Danish Gravel Challenge Blaavandshuk. They stayed in the lead group all day, with Bert closing down attacks in the final kilometers before Tim broke away near the finish to win and Van Lerberghe finished third, making it another perfect day for Soudal Quick-Step.

Wed, 04 Oct 2023 - 39min - 12 - Gabba Jacket, The Story Of An Icon!
The Gabba – The professional’s foul-weather friend. In 2010, Castelli introduced the Gabba to the pros and changed the way pros race in wet and cold conditions. A real game-changer compared to traditional flapping rain jackets, it is safe to say that it became the most iconic and most well-known piece of kit in cycling.
For many years, it was an exclusive lifesaver for Castelli riders (and pros who bought one to black out logos), copied by several brands but never as trusted as Castelli’s original, which has been improved several times in the past few years.
The Gabba RoS Jacket exemplifies everything we do at Castelli. We're always looking for innovative ways to make cycling more fun, more comfortable, and, most importantly, faster, regardless of what Mother Nature throws at you.
This is the story of how everything began, together with a focus group of riders from the Cervélo TestTeam in 2009.

Meet Michael Mørkøv, the lead-out specialist that every sprinter dreams of having by their side. The 38-year-old Dane is not the biggest star of the peloton, but he's definitely the master of propelling his sprinter to victory in those heart-pounding final moments.

THE FINE ART OF THE LEAD OUT
When it comes to the classic cycling paradox—where it's a team effort but only one person takes the glory—no one feels it more intensely than lead-out specialists like Michael Mørkøv (Soudal Quick-Step).
Being a lead-out specialist might not earn you the flashiest accolades, and you might not find yourself on the winner's podium, but the recognition and job satisfaction are definitely there. Playing a pivotal role in securing major wins can be even more rewarding than chasing after smaller victories yourself.
We'll also delve behind the scenes and learn about the Dane's methods for enduring over 20 hours of weekly training during the chilly winter months in Denmark, and much more.
We're sure you'll find plenty to glean from our conversation with Michael, adding to your enjoyment as you watch those exciting sprint finishes. Enjoy every bit of it. Ciao!
