Tue, 23 Jul 2024 - 1997 - Heartworms [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the immaculately tailored imagery of Heartworms.
Heartworms is the band project of London singer-songwriter Jojo Orme. She named it after one of her favorite bands - the Shins - 2017 album of the same name. The sound is threatening, dark, gothic even. Her lyrics walk a tightrope, beautifully balanced betwixt concrete imagery and abstract entendre. And she’s got a voice worthy of the poetry, dynamically moving from breathy whisper, to truly alarming shout. Her EP 'A Comforting Notion' is available on Speedy Wunderground Records.

BALTHVS is a psych-funk power-trio from Colombia. They can play surfy classics and straight ahead Cumbia, but they excel at trippy groovy psych-rock that references the sounds of the middle east, especially Turkish music. Oh - and you can definitely dance to it.

Tue, 09 Jul 2024 - 1993 - Angie McMahon
On the show this time, it’s the hope and light of Australian singer and writer Angie McMahon.
Angie McMahon’s new record is an ode to the simplest mantra - “One day at a time.” After the success of her first album she found herself struggling with anxiety and depression. She was diagnosed with ADHD. She moved out of her family home. She embraced being queer. She got really ill. She experienced panic attacks. She had to find a way through. Music and songwriting was one of the things that helped. The new album is filled with cautious hope, self forgiveness, and even joy - celebrating the small and great victories that are simply, somehow, doing what it takes to get on with living. It’s called 'Light, Dark, Light Again.' and is available on her own imprint through AWAL.

On the show this time, electronics fight guitars in the post-prog noise-rock of SISTEMAS INESTABLES.
SISTEMAS INESTABLES is an instrumental trio from Santiago de Chile. They are finishing a trilogy of EP’s which will comprise their full-length-release at the end of 2024. The as yet unreleased third EP is about nature and will be more organic. Their music is available on Bandcamp, and through the label LeRock Psicophonique. Tue, 18 Jun 2024 - 1987 - Elephant Gym [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it's the low-end chaotic pattern-math of Taiwan’s Elephant Gym.
Elephant Gym is siblings KT and Tell Chang on bass and guitar, and drummer Chia-Chin Tu. They met in high school, forming the band in 2012. They say the “elephant” refers to their emphasized agile bass guitar, and the “gym” refers to the physical and mental workout that is Math-Rock. Their music is a delicate balance of jazz, funk, and classical elements, unafraid to venture into catchy pop, or the shreddingest of shredding math-rock riffs. Sometimes the members of the band are counting in different time signatures. Simultaneously… YES. It’s surprisingly accessible given its complexity, due to an openness to the arrangements and their gorgeous tonal palette. Their latest albums are 'Dreams' and 'World,' both available through Topshelf Records.

Tue, 11 Jun 2024 - 1985 - Raphael Saadiq [Performance Only]
On the show this time, it's a very special throwback episode, featuring a live performance from Oakland’s own, R&B singer - Raphael Saadiq.
Raphael Saadiq is a multi-instrumentalist, particularly deadly on bass - his first big gig was playing bass for Sheila E, who was opening for … Prince. He formed the multi-platinum group Tony Toni Toné with his brother and cousin. None of them are named Tony. He’s produced massive records for people like D’Angelo, TLC, and the Roots. And, he’s put out 5 solo records. Most of this show is from his 2008 release 'The Way I See It.'

Tue, 21 May 2024 - 1979 - Caroline Rose [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it's the cinematic indie-pop of songwriter Caroline Rose.
Caroline Rose is an uncompromising, ever morphing, creative force. They’ve been putting out music since 2012. Originally it was a folky Americana sound, with acoustic guitar, pedal steel and mandolins - though Caroline’s lyrics were already potent with insight, entanglements, despair or dgaf ennui. Artistic evolution has been de rigeur since, and their latest is polished pop-music, as likely to feature the jitter of electronica as it is to sweep in with Hollywood strings.
Consistently though, the album covers have been…Rose colored. The blood-red kind of roses. The new album cover features a rose-red blindfold. It’s called 'The Art of Forgetting' and is available on New West Records.

Tue, 14 May 2024 - 1977 - Rodriguez [Performance Only]
On the show this time, it's a very special throwback episode, featuring a live performance from the Detroit legend - Rodriguez.
Detroit, Motor City. It churned out all those classic cars, but it is also one of the great American music cities. Motown obviously, which is enough all on its own. Punk from Suzi Quattro, The Suicide Machines, The Romantics, and the MC5. Pop and R&B and Hip Hop from Was Not Was, J Dilla, and Anita Baker. Sufjan Stevens, Bob Seger, or Eminem. And - from the quiet streets of Woodbridge came the psych-rocking songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. He released 2 studio albums with little success in the US, but he did well in Australia and New Zealand, and South Africa. In fact, he was a huge hit in South Africa. He didn’t know it at the time. He lived a simple life, working hard for very little money. It wasn’t until his daughter discovered a website about him in the late 90s that he realized how many fans he had in other parts of the world. His records were re-issued by Light in the Attic in 2009 and he toured - including to Seattle. He played many packed concerts to adoring fans - finally getting a taste of the success he deserved. He died in 2023 at the age of 81.

Tue, 07 May 2024 - 1975 - The Kills [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s a stripped down performance from post-garage rockers The Kills.
The Kills met back in the late 90’s when singer Alison Mosshart was staying in London during a tour with a previous band, and met her upstairs neighbor Jamie Hince. She loved his guitar playing and insisted that they be in a band together. That didn’t happen right away, but they kept in touch, and began writing together, and sharing 4 track demos of stuff, from when they were apart. Once her band broke up, Alison moved to London, and the band that would become The Kills formed in 2001, recording as VV and Hotel until they picked the band name. They play hard hitting heavy music, with one foot in bluesy garage rock, the other in epic cinematic noir-pop. It’s glitzy and dirty and always so dang cool. Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 1967 - Rochelle Jordan (RE-RELEASE)
Canadian artist Rochelle Jordan has been making downtempo R&B for over a decade now, blending 90s pop, vintage UK house and garage, electronic and progressive hip-hop for a unique and sensual sound. During her in-studio session for KEXP earlier this summer, she spoke with Larry Mizell Jr. about the inspirations behind her new record, 'Play with the Changes,' and played a dazzling set of four songs off the album.
As a bonus, we share a snippet from our 2019 sessions with acclaimed R&B artist Georgia Anne Muldrow and Declaime.

Tue, 09 Apr 2024 - 1966 - Margo Cilker [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the West Coast Americana of Margo Cilker.
Margo Cilker is a California native, of the Santa Clara Cilkers, a town in the Southern Bay, transformed by the relentless onslaught of technology companies. Farmland and apricot orchards have fallen prey to silicon and semiconductors. She moved north in her 20s, spending time in Oregon, and then barely into the state of Washington midway between Portland and Walla Walla.
She writes about life, embracing the poetically cryptic, as she wonders aloud concerning cattle drives, loneliness, drinking, and a friend's trout. Her latest record is called 'Valley of Heart's Delight,' sharing that title with the actual place, and a couple of books. It is available on Fluff & Gravy Records.

Tue, 26 Mar 2024 - 1962 - J Mascis [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the soothing acoustic jams of J Mascis.
Just kidding! J Mascis has fun playing some acoustic shows, though of course he is known for playing a Fender Jazzmaster, super loud through a couple of Marshall stacks and a fuzz pedal or 2. His familiar well-worn tenor has only gained strength over the years since we first heard him with Dinosaur Jr.
In this session he grabbed a 12-string acoustic and delivered an intimate soul-comforting set. His latest solo record, recorded at home, is called 'What Do We Do Now' and it is available on Sub Pop records.

Tue, 19 Mar 2024 - 1960 - Hooveriii [Performance & Interview Only]
Hooveriii is the solo project, now writ large, of singer / guitarist Bert Hoover. Specifically, Robert Hoover the third. The project started out in a garage in El Segundo, CA with Bert playing all the parts - bass, guitar, Casio, and drum machine into his classic 4-track Tascam 414. You can listen to that original album on vinyl coming out for Record Store Day - that’s April 20th, 2024. Over time he has assembled a stellar group of like-minded musicians. They are all capable of hitting their mark, tight and neat. They are also capable of some superb veering off into space jams. It’s psych-rock, influenced by krautrock, and it aims to take you away from this harsh world for a while - to a better place. The latest record is called 'Pointe' and it is available through the Reverberation Appreciation Society / Levitation.

Tue, 12 Mar 2024 - 1958 - Blonde Redhead [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the brilliant intensity of the veteran New York City band - Blonde Redhead.
Blonde Redhead is a legendary independent alternative-rock band. They’ve been making music, and records on their own terms since 1994. The consistent core of the band is Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace. Between them they cover vocals, keys, guitars and drums. They sometimes work with collaborators - most often occupying the position of bass player. Their band has truly gone through fire - surviving breakups, endless fights, a horrible trampling by horse, and even the goodbye album. This moment finds them returning - 30 years wiser since their debut - with a brilliant, complex record, as fresh and original as any fan could wish for. It's called 'Sit Down For Dinner' and it’s available on Section1 Records.

Yeah you got it. They dress up fancy in black and white suits. They play fast loud punk rock music. Their live shows are legendary. And ever since they put out the anthem “Hate To Say I Told You So” on their 2nd full length, 'Veni Vidi Vicious,' they did in fact take over the world. On the show this time is inspiration from the music of Yemen, played with the homemade instruments of El Khat.
El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology. Tue, 20 Feb 2024 - 1952 - TEKE::TEKE [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the compelling “collage-rock” of Montreal’s TEKE::TEKE.
TEKE::TEKE is a rock band from Montreal, with the twist being that they play in the style of 1960’s and 70’s Japanese movie soundtracks. It is a big band - 7 musicians - and their diverse backgrounds help to drive their eclectic modern take on the psychedelic rock they use for inspiration. The name TEKE::TEKE refers to the classic sound of surf guitar, and originally, they formed to honor Japanese surf legend Takeshi Terauchi. Drums, bass, dueling guitars, trombone, and flute constitute an impressive sonic palette, but once you throw in traditional Japanese instruments, multilingual poetic lyrics, and a punk rock heart - you'd better hold on because it's gonna be a ride! The addition of one of the world’s most charismatic front-persons, in the form of singer and fashion icon Maya Kuroki pushes the band from brilliant to downright extraordinary. It’s loud, it's colorful and it’s super fun. Their latest is called 'Hagata' and it is available on Kill Rock Stars.

On the show this time, it’s the avant-garde sitar of Anoushka Shankar. Anoushka Shankar is a master musician, as well as being a composer and producer. She studied with her famous father - Ravi Shankar - who had a smaller instrument made for his 7 year old daughter. She made her professional debut at thirteen, and over the years she has reinvented sitar music, playing with musicians from various genres, cultures and geographies, looking for new situations and contexts to use its inimitable voice. As she puts it, she “de-exotified” the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' On the show this time, dance your butt right off with London producers Jungle.
British dance-music producer-musicians Jungle have figured out the recipe. They’ve been making hook-laden rump-shakers since before their oddly titled full length debut - 'Jungle.' Technically they’ve been doing it since forever - they’ve been friends since they were little kids. Massive grooves like “Busy Earnin',” “Casio,” and “Keep Moving” set the standard. They’ve got placements in TV, film, and video games, so you’ve probably heard Jungle even if you didn’t know it. Also, their videos have some of the best dancing you’ll ever see, thanks in part to the ongoing collaboration with the KZ Creatives collective. Tue, 26 Dec 2023 - 1937 - Hania Rani (RE-RELEASE)
On the show this time, it’s the cinematic piano and electronics of Hania Rani.
The Polish pianist’s latest album, 'On Giacometti,' is out February 2023 on Gondwana Records. She continues to expand on her film score ambient classical atmospherics, using electronics and her clear wistful voice. In this episode, we touch on Rani's origin story and influences and then get right to the music as these works are a bit longer. This performance features 3 previously unreleased pieces, and one - “Buka” - from her 2020 release, 'Home.'

Tue, 26 Dec 2023 - 1936 - The Mountain Goats [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the detail driven divinations of The Mountain Goats.
The Mountain Goats are a definitive independent band. John Darnielle has been releasing music under that name since 1991. He started out taping straight onto cassette, with a boombox, and over the years has returned to that medium - lo-fi for sure, but oddly high in emotional fidelity. He’s also worked with engineers - in particular with Tiny Telephone’s John Vanderslice, and is now equally comfortable with full-studio productions. The band has changed over the years too, but at the moment is a wonderfully cohesive group - Peter Hughes on bass, Matt Douglas on sax/keys and 2nd guitar, and rockin’ Jon Wurster on drums. His latest is “Jenny From Thebes” - his 22nd full length album, and it’s available on Merge Records.

Tue, 19 Dec 2023 - 1934 - The Budos Band [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the powerful 60’s and 70’s influenced instrumentals of the mighty Budos Band.
The Budos Band is now on their 9th release - 6 albums and 3 EP’s - and they are also now on their own label - Diamond West. They were already recording on their own, in their own studio, and they were living a bi-coastal existence with some members in California. So, it really is an organic move, amicably splitting from their origin story label Daptone Records to do their own thing. Continuing their run of epic-sounding cinematic instrumental dramas, their first release on this imprint is the EP 'Frontier’s Edge.'

Tue, 12 Dec 2023 - 1932 - Youth Lagoon [Performance & Interview Only]
On the show this time, it’s the experiment-Americana of Boise, Idaho’s Trevor Powers and his band Youth Lagoon.
Youth Lagoon returns, renewed and refreshed to the studio and to the road. After the project's debut in 2011, and the following 2 albums, songwriter Trevor Powers announced the end of the band after only 5 years, in 2016. He needed to move on, and released two albums under his own name. Never say never though - after surviving some severe unexpected health problems in 2021 Trevor found himself reconnecting with the parts of himself, he had left behind. Self-acceptance and love brought a new perspective, and he resurrected Youth Lagoon with the release of the latest album 'Heaven Is A Junkyard,' available on Fat Possum Records.
