Indie rockers and former Tacoma locals Widowspeak released their sixth studio albumThe Jacket in Spring 2022 as a semi-concept album loosely telling the story a chain stitcher turned New York rocker. Vocalist Molly Hamilton relayed to Cheryl Waters in this episode of Live on KEXP the story behind the album before launching into four dreamy tracks off the record as well as professing their love for radio (which we don’t mind one bit).

It seems unbelievable that the Black Pumas are just now releasing their second studio album. Their first self-titled album came out in 2019, and became an instant classic. They met through music, and a shared love for Moroccan Gnawa music led them to learn how to play the Guembri - a kind of 3 stringed bass instrument - and its smaller relative the Awisha. They started composing music together, the idea being, they would make a rock band, playing rock music, but with these instruments taking the place of bass and guitar. They recorded their first album 'Nayda!' and released it in 2020.  Their latest is called 'Swaken', and it is available on Real World Records.

Drummer and composer Yussef Dayes makes music that embraces tradition, but then puts on a brand new shirt and walks out into the city, ready for anything.  He’s a band leader - having put together a group of monster players to bring this music into existence. The Lewisham native has been in the midst of the current London community ever since he and his brothers were in a band together.  “United Vibrations” was jamming at the house on weekends, busking in the streets, and later putting on shows - including the infamous nights called “12 Tone.”  His debut solo album “Black Classical Music” is available through Brownswood Recordings and Nonesuch Records.

Angie McMahon’s new record is an ode to the simplest mantra - “One day at a time.” After the success of her first album she found herself struggling with anxiety and depression. She was diagnosed with ADHD. She moved out of her family home. She embraced being queer. She got really ill. She experienced panic attacks. She had to find a way through. Music and songwriting was one of the things that helped. The new album is filled with cautious hope, self forgiveness, and even joy - celebrating the small and great victories that are simply, somehow, doing what it takes to get on with living. It’s called 'Light, Dark, Light Again.' and is available on her own imprint through AWAL.

The first EP, 'oppidum,' which means “town” is about cities - powerful and aggressive. The second, 'homines,' meaning “people” is about humans - perhaps it is more emotional. The as yet unreleased third EP is about nature and will be more organic. Their music is available on Bandcamp, and through the label LeRock Psicophonique. Elephant Gym is siblings KT and Tell Chang on bass and guitar, and drummer Chia-Chin Tu. They met in high school, forming the band in 2012. They say the “elephant” refers to their emphasized agile bass guitar, and the “gym” refers to the physical and mental workout that is Math-Rock. Their music is a delicate balance of jazz, funk, and classical elements, unafraid to venture into catchy pop, or the shreddingest of shredding math-rock riffs. Sometimes the members of the band are counting in different time signatures. Simultaneously… YES. It’s surprisingly accessible given its complexity, due to an openness to the arrangements and their gorgeous tonal palette. Their latest albums are 'Dreams' and 'World,' both available through Topshelf Records.

DJ Shadow grew up in Northern California in the 70’s and 80s, in the original Star Wars era, spending all his lunch money on comics and sci-fi movies and music. He fell in love with hip-hop, and began to make it however he could. He didn’t know any MCs - so he gravitated to the musical side - sampling and scratching. He released his debut 'Endtroducing' in 1996 and has been changing the game one cool sound at a time ever since. His latest is called 'Action Adventure' and is available through Mass Appeal.

Punk from Suzi Quattro, The Suicide Machines, The Romantics, and the MC5. Pop and R&B and Hip Hop from Was Not Was, J Dilla, and Anita Baker. Sufjan Stevens, Bob Seger, or Eminem. And - from the quiet streets of Woodbridge came the psych-rocking songwriter Sixto Rodriguez. He released 2 studio albums with little success in the US, but he did well in Australia and New Zealand, and South Africa. In fact, he was a huge hit in South Africa. He didn’t know it at the time. He lived a simple life, working hard for very little money. It wasn’t until his daughter discovered a website about him in the late 90s that he realized how many fans he had in other parts of the world. His records were re-issued by Light in the Attic in 2009 and he toured - including to Seattle. He played many packed concerts to adoring fans - finally getting a taste of the success he deserved. He died in 2023 at the age of 81.

On the show this time, it’s a stripped down performance from post-garage rockers The Kills.

The Kills met back in the late 90’s when singer Alison Mosshart was staying in London during a tour with a previous band, and met her upstairs neighbor Jamie Hince. She loved his guitar playing and insisted that they be in a band together. That didn’t happen right away, but they kept in touch, and began writing together, and sharing 4 track demos of stuff, from when they were apart. Once her band broke up, Alison moved to London, and the band that would become The Kills formed in 2001, recording as VV and Hotel until they picked the band name. They play hard hitting heavy music, with one foot in bluesy garage rock, the other in epic cinematic noir-pop. It’s glitzy and dirty and always so dang cool. Their latest album is 'God Games' and it is available on Domino.

The Kills met back in the late 90’s when singer Alison Mosshart was staying in London during a tour with a previous band, and met her upstairs neighbor Jamie Hince. She loved his guitar playing and insisted that they be in a band together. That didn’t happen right away, but they kept in touch, and began writing together, and sharing 4 track demos of stuff, from when they were apart. Once her band broke up, Alison moved to London, and the band that would become The Kills formed in 2001, recording as VV and Hotel until they picked the band name. They play hard hitting heavy music, with one foot in bluesy garage rock, the other in epic cinematic noir-pop. It’s glitzy and dirty and always so dang cool. Their latest album is 'God Games' and it is available on Domino.

El Khat is the musical brainchild of Eyal el Wahab, a Yemeni man who grew up in Tel Aviv. He makes his own instruments in the tradition of impoverished people all over the world. The band is named after the drug – Khat – a stimulant chewed like tobacco across the Middle East and in Africa, and you’d better check where you are before partaking. Its legality varies by location, as does the punishment for possession! El Khat’s music is based in the traditional sounds of Yemen, but it is not frozen in amber, this is not anthropology.  This is living modern music for you to listen to now. Their latest is called Albat Alawi Op. 99 and it is available on Glitterbeat.

As she puts it, she “de-exotified” the Sitar. Flamenco, hip hop, jazz, and cinematic scores are all fair game. Her latest record, the first of a trilogy is called 'Chapter 1: FOREVER, FOR NOW.' Featuring production and collaboration from Arooj Aftab and Nils Frahm. It is available through Leiter, and on streaming services.

Gregory Alan Isakov is a singer-songwriter sure. But he’s also a farmer. His market farm in Boulder, Colorado provides produce to around a hundred CSA members, a couple of chefs, and a food bank. The man is really into growing the perfect lettuce mix. That’s why it’s rare to find him on tour in the summer. But - when you have a new full length album, five years in the making, it’s time to dust off the old road boots and get out there. It’s called 'Appaloosa Bones' and is available on Dualtone Records and through his own label Suitcase Town Music.

It’s been an 11-year run already for the Bloomington, Indiana band, now based solidly in the thriving Los Angeles psych-rock scene. What started as a one-man-band - Dylan Sizemore on guitar, vocals, and stomping away on a kick drum - has evolved and adapted into a 6-piece prog/post-punk juggernaut - now featuring Nikki “Pickle” Smith from Death Valley Girls and Nick Aguilar, previous touring drummer for Mike Watt of the legendary Minutemen. The new album is called 'Data Doom' and is available on Greenway Records.

The Polish pianist’s latest album, 'On Giacometti,' is out February 2023 on Gondwana Records.  She continues to expand on her film score ambient classical atmospherics, using electronics and her clear wistful voice. In this episode, we touch on Rani's origin story and influences and then get right to the music as these works are a bit longer. This performance features 3 previously unreleased pieces, and one - “Buka” - from her 2020 release, 'Home.'
