Welcome to the Wise Doula Podcast, a friendly space where we discuss everything surrounding the parenting journey, from pregnancy and birth, to postpartum and beyond. I am your host, Marta Arandia. Doula, mother and early childhood expert rolled into one. I am passionate about supporting families through every step of the parenting journey. My goal is to help expecting parents get information and resources so they can approach the birth experience from a place of support, understanding and strength. This is a safe place to talk about everything related to childbirth. There is so much wisdom inside of us when it comes to pregnancy, but sometimes society might make us doubt our abilities. I invite you to listen, connect and share in our collective wisdom, the one we inherited from the mothers and grandmothers before us. Leave your worries at the door, grab your favorite cup of tea and get comfortable. In here, you are nurtured and safe. Your voice matters. See you inside.

Thu, 21 Nov 2024 - 34min - 32 - My Adventures at A Creative Fair
In this week's episode, join me for a fun time and a good bit of storytelling, as I share with you my adventures attending a content creation festival for the first time. It was a physical journey but also a journey in my mind. I am not kidding, I almost told myself that I didn't belong there but in the end I told myself a big, resounding yes. I think all of us have that moment of doubt when we are about to tackle something new and scary. And many times we abandon ship before trying. But what if, we tell ourselves to try it anyway? I could have said no but I said a big yes. It was a really unique experience with lots of moments and tiny lightbulbs here and there. And I love to share with you the lessons and the pearls I discovered about life and business in this episode.

Sat, 09 Nov 2024 - 34min - 31 - When Perinatal Loss and Love Meet - An Interview with Jill Kottmeier
My guest today is Jill Kottmeier, registered nurse and thanatologist. Jill is the director of Well-being and Bereavement Services at Endeavor Health Northwest Community Hospital in Illinois. For more than 2 decades, Jill has been supporting families at her hospital and accompanying them through the difficult process of having to say goodbye to their baby too soon. Her mission is two-fold, to support parents experiencing the loss of their baby and to support hospital staff so they can better care for families going through loss. This is a support that starts as soon as they get the news that their baby is not alive, but continues well after families have left the hospital.
It is an honor to have her on the podcast today, and hear all the insights that she’s gonna bring to us, the learning experiences and the wisdom accumulated while working with hundreds of babies and families at their most difficult time. It is my hope that this interview gives you a deeper inside into the world of perinatal loss, and gives you effective tools on how to nurture and support family, friends or clients going through this experience.

Thu, 31 Oct 2024 - 1h 27min - 30 - Holding Space for Families During Perinatal Loss
In this new episode, we talk about supporting our friends, family, and clients at a time when the unexpected happens. A time when the perfect idea of pregnancy disappears and we are faced with perinatal loss and saying goodbye to our baby.
This is a difficult subject and we often don’t know how to react when somebody close to us or a client experiences it. Often we shy away from helping because we’re worried about saying the wrong thing or doing the wrong thing. In this episode, I will share what I have learned as a bereavement doula on how to support families during loss, and give you some useful tools so you can do the same. Whether you are a birth professional, a relative or just a friend, You can make a world of difference by walking with families at this difficult time.
I understand this is a sensitive topic that might be triggering for some listeners. If you feel that this is an intense topic for you and prefer to skip it, we understand. If you know somebody who could benefit from learning more about this topic, please share the episode with them.
See you inside and thank you for your support.

In this weeks episode, I want to do a bit of storytelling and share with you my recent visit to a local lactation fair, celebrated as part of World Breastfeeding Week. Come hear the stories of the parents that stopped by my table, their lactation journeys, their hopes and dreams for the new baby. Sun, 08 Sep 2024 - 32min - 27 - Comparison Is A Messy Game
In this episode, we talk about comparison and how it affects us. Comparison has been part of our lives since childhood, and it was often used to make us work harder. But now, as adults, comparison is a normal part of our thoughts and actions. We sometimes ask for help and end up feeling compared to others. This can be especially tought when it happens during pregnancy, after having a baby, or when we're taking care of a newborn. Comparison can make us feel bad about ourselves as new parents and unsure of our abilities. By understanding comparison and dealing with it, we can find joy in our own experiences and be happier. Join us inside to talk more about comparison in parenting and what we can do about it.

Sun, 25 Aug 2024 - 28min - 26 - Building the Gold Support Team In Parenting
In this episode, we talk about how important it is to lean on the people around us during our parenting journey, and build our tribe of helpers, our support team that will help us get Olympic gold.
So many times we feel vulnerable and raw when it comes to asking for help, almost as if accepting we need support made us weaker. Actually, there is strength to be found in asking for help. In connection with that, we will talk about how to find the “natural healers” in your life and how to use them as part of your team as you embark in this journey to Parent land. We are all together in this life journey. How about we find ways to help and support one another? How about ways to support our peers who are becoming parents?

Sun, 11 Aug 2024 - 25min - 25 - How Labels Influence our Parenting Journey
In this episode I invite you to learn more about labels. They are all around us and physical labels have a purpose. They help us identify and find things. However, what happens with invisible labels, such as the ones we get growing up? We might think we shook them off overtime, but they stay with us and influence the way we see the world, and the way we approach pregnancy and postpartum. These labels sometime come from society. Other times, from our medical provider, creating a lot of emotions and impacting our pregnancy. We will discuss ways to accept these labels with kindness, but also learn to take care of ourselves and grow in confidence towards birth, in spite of the labels given to us.

Thu, 27 Jun 2024 - 29min - 22 - Who Is The New Roommate? Siblings and Babies
In today's episode, we discuss how to prepare siblings in the early years (0-8 year olds) for the arrival of the new baby. This is generally a time of joy and excitement for parents but it might leave our little ones feeling like an uninvited roomate is moving in and planning to take "over the house".
How can we prepare them to understand what is happening, while also involving them in the process? What tools can we use to start baby discussions before the baby arrives? What are normal behaviors that you can expect with the arrival of a new baby? Does effective communication play a role in this process? This is a topic I am passionate about, as a former early childhood teacher turned doula and educator. I can't wait to share it with you.
All of this and more is waiting for you inside the episode.

Sun, 28 Apr 2024 - 29min - 17 - Teacher's Self-Care and Motherhood
Welcome to Season 2 of the Podcast. This episode is very special, because it connects with episode 16, A Letter to my Younger Self. I will be sharing my story and how after years devoting my entire life to the classroom, I found myself experiencing burnout and mental health struggles during my last teaching year.
I went looking for help and what I found was radically different from what I hoped to find. Overtime, I have reflected on that experience and the tools I used to feel better. Today, I am bringing that reflection to you, in hopes it will help you too. Let's talk about self care and finding balance in life and work. I will share some ideas and thought provoking questions.
If you are a teacher or a professional and thinking about motherhood, I hope hearing about my journey helps you reflect on the essence of life, and the importance of nurturing ourselves first.

Fri, 19 Apr 2024 - 35min - 16 - A Letter to My Younger Teacher Self
In this episode I invite you to travel back in time with me. What would I say if I could go back 20 years and talk to that young teacher? Would I tell her she had all the time to be a mother? Or perhaps tell her to prioritize her family instead of the work she devoted so much to?
Of course, none of us have a time machine but suspend disbelief for a few minutes and travel with me. My messsage might not change my past but I hope it will help some young teachers contemplating motherhood. And if you are not a teacher, that's ok. You are still welcome on this journey. Pack your bags and let's go.
By the way, this episode of time travel marks the end of Season 1. We will come back with season 2 very soon and hope to enjoy your company again. Thank you for your support and love during our first season.

The postpartum period brings with it many changes and adjustments, both physical and emotional, personal and social. Often we ask about the baby but neglect to ask how mom, dad and the siblings are doing. Let's talk about being mindful of visits and also how to set boundaries if you just had a baby. Together, we can provide the best support for the pospartum families around us, whether as a peer or a professional.

Is it possible to find gratitude and joy again after perinatal loss, even when we didn't achieve that dreamed rainbow pregnancy? In my experience it is, but it's not something that happens overnight.
Join me inside to learn more about that journey, how we rebuilt our life after that experience and the big lessons we learned along the way. Fri, 01 Dec 2023 - 40min - 3 - Doulas Have Origin Stories, Just Like Superheroes.
In this episode I invite you to learn more about my origin story. What made me leave public school teaching behind and start my doula career after two decades in education? I will share my journey as a preschool teacher in the US, my desire to start my own family and how I ended up postponing that dream. When that dream finally happened, it came with some challenges, a lot of growing and a new professional path. This is a story of love that keeps going. I can't wait to see you inside and tell you more about it.

Mon, 20 Nov 2023 - 1h 00min - 2 - Curious about my work as a doula? Ask Me Anything.
On this special episode of the Wise Doula podcast, I invited my audience to ask me anything they wanted to know about my job as a doula, and they really came through. From asking about my reason to become a doula in the first place, to wondering about what my typical day looks like, no question is too big or small. We will debunk some common myths, such as Doulas being only available for the wealthy, the crunchy or alternative people. We will also discuss the importance of finding a doula that aligns with your phylosophy and ideas. I will share my personal journey into Doula work, sparked by my own experience with pregnancy loss, and discuss the range of services I provide as a doula, including lactation education, prenatal classes and more. We will also talk about my typical workday as a Doula. Thank you to everyone that submitted questions for today's episode. I really enjoyed answering them.
