When statistics show that more than 70% of small business fail in the first two years – it’s confirmation that starting a business is itself a risky act. It is not surprising, then, when you review the literature around entrepreneurship that risk-tolerance is defined as one of the key traits for a successful entrepreneur. So, Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Youth Employment Portfolio Head, Momentum Metropolitan Holdings, joins to talk about the significance of entrepreneurship and other challenges that entrepreneurs face in this landscape that is under-resourced and lacks adequate support structures.

It highlights some of the challenges that the court has encountered but as the Dr Corder says “Constitutional Court has played a leading role in realising constitutional justice over the past 30 years, exceeding the expectations of many sceptics. However, many forces seek to undermine its role, and civil society needs to be resolute in defence of the court, while holding it to account and assisting it to remain true to its mandate.”

Tue, 23 Apr 2024 - 3248 - Legal Matters: Trademark and logos – what we need to know.
South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) lost a legal bid to stop the MK party from using the name and logo of its former armed wing. The governing party had argued that uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK), headed by former President Jacob Zuma, had breached the trademark law. But the Durban High Court disagreed, allowing the use of the name, which translates as Spear of the Nation. It is a significant victory for the MK party ahead the 29 May general election. It ha been noted that neither the ANC, nor the MKP could prove to court that they could claim the trademark, because they had both failed to register it as a trademark. A search on the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) website proved that the logo trademark belonged to Legacy Projects. The CIPC is the legal custodian of trademarks and intellectual property. If youre asking what does all of this mean? Well this evening on Legal Matters, Marius Gerber, Intellectual Property Specialist at Witz Incorporated Inc., joins us to educate about how the Trade Marks Act, 1993 (Act 194 of 1993) says about trademarks and logos.

Tue, 23 Apr 2024 - 3247 - Political Analysis: Reserve Bank costing South Africans at least R4,000 per month, says economist
South Africans are paying significantly more on their bonds and to service their debts due to the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) interest rate hikes – which were never needed. An economist has warned South Africans that they are paying the cost of an unnecessarily harsh monetary policy, which is costing households at least R4,000 a month. This is the view of Dr Roelof Botha, an economist, a part time economics lecturer at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) and is the Economic Advisor to the Optimum Financial Services Group, says that South Africa’s interest rates do not need to be as high as they are and he joins us to elaborate why he say that.

Mon, 22 Apr 2024 - 3246 - Current Affairs: E-tolls are gone but debts are not scrapped
Transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga says e-toll debt will not be written off. Gauteng motorists will continue to be liable to pay their historic e-tolldebts afterthe tolls are switched off in Gauteng. Minister Chikunga acknowledged that the resistance to e-tolls by motorists and other stakeholders suggested government could have consulted widely and done things differently, but said it was “water under the bridge”. She said the user-pay principle remains government policy and e-toll debt will not be written off. However, the question of recovering the debt is a sticky one that requires further discussion. Mr Daryl Swanepoel, Chief Executive Officer at Inclusive Society Institute, joins us for this discussion.

Tue, 16 Apr 2024 - 3231 - Political Analysis: Now ordinary citizens can approach Parliament directly
The National Assembly (NA/Parliament) has taken a significant step by adopting a transformational amendment to its rules and guidelines for petitions. According to the country's highest legislative body, these regulations have been introduced to foster more open, transparent and responsive legislative processes. Previously, public petitions required an MP to act as an intermediary between the House and a member of the public. This decision has been as a progressive by parliament. The questions remains on how this will work, seeing that we had the Public Protector’s office and the National Council of Provinces where citizens could be able to voice that grievances. What happens to the other institutions? Will people still be able to access them? How will the process work? To gives more some insights into this issue we’re joined by Nolu Maki, spokesperson for Dear South Africa.
