Tue, 05 Nov 2024 - 3698 - Political Analysis: Why Botswana’s *successful elections made international headlines?
Botswana held a national election last week Wednesday to decide if one of Africa's longest-ruling parties stays in power for another five-year term. The Botswana Democratic Party has governed the southern African nation for 58 years, since independence from Britain in 1966, and has held the presidency throughout. Botswana's opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has won a majority in parliament and can form the next government, the electoral commission announced on Friday, marking a historic defeat for the party that had governed the diamond-rich country for nearly six decades. Outgoing president Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat in Wednesday's general election and said his administration would begin handing over the reins of government in the next few days. Thembisa Fakude, a senior research fellow at Africa Asia Dialogues and chief executive officer at the Mail & Guardian, joins to tell us more about the successful Botswana elections.

Wed, 30 Oct 2024 - 3686 - Education feature: Should the national matric pass mark be raised to 50%?
Should the national matric pass mark be raised to 50%? Recently, MPs urged the Department of Basic Education to consider this increase, sparking questions about how a higher pass mark could impact students, teaching quality, and overall educational standards. However, some critics of the proposal point out that systemic issues in the education system, including resource inequalities and varying school conditions, need to be addressed first. Some argue that simply raising the pass mark without improving educational support could set up students, especially in under-resourced schools, for failure. Is this change necessary for academic excellence, or would it create more challenges for students and teachers alike? Joining me to unpack this conversation is Professor Mbulungeni Madiba, the Dean of Education at Stellenbosch University (SU).

Mon, 21 Oct 2024 - 3661 - Medical Matters: “Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?"
The South African government first proposed a 20% sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in 2016. However, after extensive consultations with the beverage and sugar industries, the levy was reduced to approximately 10%, coming into effect in April 2018. Despite this lower rate, studies up to April 2021 show that the HPL has led to significant reductions in SSB consumption, particularly among low-income groups and populations with high SSB intake. These findings suggest that the levy has been effective in improving health equity. The Healthy Living Alliance’s (HEALA) released its fourth episode of the thought-provoking web series, Chew on This. The episode titled “Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?", critically examines the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary beverages, introduced to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. Thu, 17 Oct 2024 - 3654 - Change your Mindest: "Why we need to inspire and guide our children, the next generation through story telling".
Since ancient times, storytelling in the African culture has been a way of passing on traditions, codes of behaviour, as well as maintaining social order. Writing had not been developed in ancient Africa, but there were ways for Africans to transmit their thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. Telling stories can help young minds internalize fundamental interpersonal communication skills, such as: Developing active listening skills. Strengthening reading skills, especially comprehension. Sharing personal experiences. Storytelling serves to keep history, culture, and the lineages of a people alive. It is an oral documentation of life, which could involve elements of stories, poetry, music and dance. Civil society and community organisations often share on-the-ground, lived experiences through storytelling to foster understanding and trust and increase communication between each other. This evening on change your mindset we talk about "Why we need to inspire and guide our children, the next generation through story telling" and we’re joined by Kelly Kaschula, author, storyteller and illustrator.

Wed, 16 Oct 2024 - 3650 - Education Feature: How to prepare for a successful visa application
This evening on our educational feature we look at how to prepare for a successful visa application. Many countries require you to have a visa – a document that’s either physically attached to your passport, or in the case of an e-visa, linked electronically – that entitles you to enter the country you plan to visit. This is issued by the relevant embassy or consulate. Ahead of applying for a visa, it’s crucial to ensure your finances are in order.
Overseas travel is extremely expensive for South Africans, due to the weak rand and high cost of living in popular foreign destinations. For example, a two-week trip to France, can cost R48,000-R91,000, or more. Expenses include a round-trip flight (R12,000-R20,000), accommodation (R1,500-R3,000 daily), food and eating out (R500-R1,000 daily), transport (R3,000- 5,000), and sightseeing and activities (R5,000-R10,000).
Because travel is a significant investment for a middle-income earner, it’s vital to ensure your travel plans are not ruined at the last minute. So, Sarah Nicholson, operations manager of JustMoney.co.za, joins us to talk about the do’s and don’ts of applying for a visa.

Tue, 15 Oct 2024 - 3647 - Legal Matters: “The payment of gratuity in employment law. Is it a right or a benefit?”
This evening on Legal Matters we talk about the payment of gratuity in employment law. Is it a right or a benefit? The payment of gratuity is popularly known as the 13th cheque or Christmas bonus– in other words, a payment of gratitude by the employer to the employee in recognition of a job well done, or if you like, going the extra mile. It must be understood that Labour Law is silent onthe question of bonuses. This means that the payment or non-payment of bonuses is a matter entirely for the employer to decide, and to negotiate with employees. If an employer who presently does not pay bonuses of any sort wishes to continue on that route he can do so, without fear of being accused of unfair labour practice. To elaborate on this issue, we’re joined by Galeboe Modisapodi, Employment Relations & Employee Benefits Consultant, Accredited Commercial Mediator who’s Partnered with Molatudi Advisory Services (MAS).

Thu, 03 Oct 2024 - 3619 - In Conversation with Dr Eve: The trauma of cancer and post traumatic growth
This evening on “In Conversation with Dr Eve” we talk about the trauma of cancer and post traumatic growth. Trauma of cancer may involve stressful events that repeat or continue over time. The patient may suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress anytime from diagnosis through treatment and possible cancer recurrence, so screening may be needed more than once. The medical team will look for symptoms of PTS or PTSD. The main difference between PTS and PTSD is the duration and severity of symptoms. While PTS symptoms usually subside within a few weeks or months, PTSD symptoms can persist for years if left untreated. “Post-traumatic growth (PTG) is where someone has been affected by PTSD and finds a way to take new meaning from their experiences in order to live their lives in a different way than prior to the trauma,”. To discuss these issues further we’re joined by Dr Eve.
