One of South Africa’s most prolific criminal cases, “The Station Strangler”, will be streamed on Showmax. The documentary delves into the world of serial killer Norman Afzal Simons, who is believed to have killed 21 young boys and one adult from the mid-80s to the mid-90s in the Cape Flats.The schoolteacher was convicted of the rape and murder of 10-year-old Elroy van Rooyen and sentenced to 25 years in in 1995.

Twenty-eight years after his imprisonment, Simons was released on parole and placed under 24-hour monitoring in November 2023, opening up fresh wounds in a community where justice has been denied for decades.

Meanwhile, the true-crime feature documentary, which will premiere on November 6, is produced by IdeaCandy which brought viewers “Tracking Thabo Bester”, “Devilsdorp” “Steinheist” and “School Ties”. Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the contentious education reform bill into law - but deferred two clauses for three months. These two clauses relate to the admissions and language policies of schools. The EFF has put pressure on the speaker to clarify Parliament’s role in the two clauses of the BELA Bill that have been deferred. There are concerns that Parliament might be sidelined, and the bill may not be implemented as originally intended. To highlight these concerns we’re joined by Veronica Mente, National Chairperson of the EFF.

While the finance ministers and central bank governors are meeting in Washington this week for the traditional autumn meeting of the IMF and World Bank, a different kind of summit is taking place in Russia at the same time. From 22-24 October, it is the turn of President Vladimir Putin to host the 16th BRICS summit. A total of 32 foreign delegations from all over the world are expected to attend, 24 of them at the level of heads of state and government, including all of the nine BRICS members to date, as well as numerous other countries interested in membership, including with Turkey for the first time a NATO member state. It has not yet been confirmed whether UN Secretary-General António Guterres will also accept the Russian invitation to attend the summit. The South African government first proposed a 20% sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in 2016. However, after extensive consultations with the beverage and sugar industries, the levy was reduced to approximately 10%, coming into effect in April 2018. Despite this lower rate, studies up to April 2021 show that the HPL has led to significant reductions in SSB consumption, particularly among low-income groups and populations with high SSB intake. These findings suggest that the levy has been effective in improving health equity. The Healthy Living Alliance’s (HEALA) released its fourth episode of the thought-provoking web series, Chew on This. The episode titled “Is the Sugar Industry Lying to Us?", critically examines the Health Promotion Levy (HPL) on sugary beverages, introduced to reduce sugar consumption and improve public health. Joining us to educate us more about this series we’re joined by Prof Sue Goldstein, a public health medicine specialist, and MD of the SAMRC/Wits Centre for Health Economics and Decision Science (PRICELESS SA).

The payment of gratuity is popularly known as the 13th cheque or Christmas bonus– in other words, a payment of gratitude by the employer to the employee in recognition of a job well done, or if you like, going the extra mile.  It must be understood that Labour Law is silent onthe question of bonuses. This means that the payment or non-payment of bonuses is a matter entirely for the employer to decide, and to negotiate with employees. Today the African National Congress (ANC) celebrated 100 days of the 7th Administration within the Government of National Unity (GNU) at Luthuli House. President Ramaphosa said that the ANC went into the GNU knowing fully well it had ideological and policy differences with many of its partners.
