Wed, 05 Jun 2024 - 726 - Is Selfishness Addiction Holding You Back from True Freedom and Joy?
The Selfishness Addiction– Yes, you read that right. We're diving deep into how an addiction to selfishness can shape our behaviors and strain our relationships. We’re peeling back the layers of why we sometimes confuse self-preservation with self-centeredness.
Understanding Freedom– We start by exploring the true meaning of freedom. It's not just about breaking free from unwanted behaviors like porn addiction; it's about finding peace, rest, and joy. We're talking about aligning with the soul's fundamental needs, as taught by Jesus himself.
From Selfish to Selfless– We've all been there, right? Putting ourselves first, fast, and completely. But here's the kicker: the more we focus on ourselves, the less satisfied we feel. It's a paradox that we unpack with humor, honesty, and a touch of humility.
A New Perspective– Imagine realizing that your whole life has been a race to put yourself first, only to end up feeling empty. That's the story of a Christian brother who woke up to his selfishness addiction. It's a powerful moment of vulnerability that might just change the way you see your own life.
Growth and Healing– This episode isn't just about identifying the problem; it's about finding the path to healing. We discuss the importance of taking small steps towards giving, towards others, and towards a life filled with genuine connection.
So, if you've ever felt caught in the cycle of coping and surviving rather than truly living, this episode is for you. It's time to break free from the chains of selfishness and step into a life of selfless joy.
Topics Covered in this Episode:
Selfishness addiction and its impact on behavior and relationshipsUnderstanding the difference between healthy self-care and selfishnessSelfishness driven by fear and focus on one's own desires and needsThe concept of freedom and its relation to the deeper needs of individualsThe importance of aligning with the fundamental needs of the soulThe distinction between healthy self-awareness and selfishnessThe detrimental impact of selfishness on individuals and their relationshipsThe immature and wounded nature of selfishness addictionThe natural order of relationships and the importance of learning to be selfless while still caring for oneselfThe insight and honesty of admitting and addressing selfishness addictionMore Resources:

Wed, 06 Mar 2024 - 712 - Living Undefiled (with Nick Stumbo)
Why is pornography such a big deal? This is a common question in the culture, but not necessarily one of alarm, but rather questioning why ministries like ours and many others even exist. Is there any real harm to pornography?
To help us answer these questions we have Nick Stumbo back on the program. Nick is the Executive Director of Pure Desire Ministries and an author and speaker on sexual issues from a Christian worldview.
In our conversation, Nick shares many of the negative effects of porn: biological, mental, emotional, and relational. We look at the many unhealthy patterns porn promotes, the natural trajectory of tolerance (both individually and culturally), the linkage between human trafficking and porn, and then how to live free from the negative effects of porn.
Finally, Nick shares a new video series resource called Living Undefiled that takes an in-depth look at the topics surrounding pornography and human trafficking.

Wed, 14 Feb 2024 - 709 - Living More Than a Love Story
How important is trust to emotional health and building strong, mature relationships? It is vital! Yet, many men we have served in our ministry struggle terribly with trust.
In today’s episode, Stephen and I are going to dig into this important topic of trust through the lens of one man’s story that begins with him not being able to trust his parents with his thoughts and feelings and ends with him finally living a “love plus trust” story.
We will share the distinction between love and trust and how love plus trust takes us even deeper than love alone. We need to learn how to understand trust in its multilayered dimensions if we want to enjoy strong, healthy relationships.

Wed, 07 Feb 2024 - 708 - Understanding Human Agency
Albert Bandura was a psychologist who is credited with developing the term “human agency,” which refers to how you act, think, and interact with life.
In this episode, Stephen and I will unpack the four functions of agency and how they might help us develop better self-awareness and deeper faith and relationships.
The 4 functions of agency are:
- Intentions (or intentionality)Outcomes (or expectations)Self-regulationSelf-reflection
Agency asks, “Are you paying attention to your own intentions and are you getting better at self-regulating and self-reflecting?’ We hope this conversation will help you understand yourself and others better – and use your agency for good, godly purposes.

Every Christian knows that forgiveness is central to salvation and restoration to God. But what does forgiveness look like between us and those who have hurt us?
Our guests today are Bruce and Toni Hebel, founders of Forgiving Forward, a ministry that helps people experience the freedom of the gospel through the power of forgiveness. They share their own journey of learning the hard way how vital forgiveness is to personal character and health, as well as effective ministry to others.

Did you know that 58% of women who struggle with porn were exposed to porn before age 12? Or that 93% of women who struggle with porn never attend a support group? And that 48% of women viewing porn were a victim of sexual abuse?
Our guest today is Crystal Renaud Day, a coach, author, and speaker – and the founder and executive director of SheRecovery.com. She has been a leading voice for women in this space of sexual integrity ministry since 2009.
Recently, Crystal and her ministry conducted research to answer the question “What Drives Women to Porn?” There were over 1300 anonymous female participants, ages 18 to 65+ from 58 countries, who had used or been addicted to pornography in the past or present.

Lots of men over the years have shared the sentiment of the following statement: “I’m good as long as I can stay out of my own head.” As we have unpacked this idea with the men who have shared this, there have been four key thoughts that typically keep guys from feeling safe within their own minds.
In today’s episode, Stephen and I are going to share these four thoughts. They are:

Parenting can feel overwhelming in the best of circumstances. But in today’s world which is awash in all forms of sexual brokenness, it can seem impossible, especially when it comes to the issue of identity.
In today’s episode, our guest is Jordan Young. He is a student ministry pastor at Table Community Church in Hillsboro, Oregon near Portland. He has decades of experience in working with students and the various challenges they face in the culture.
Our conversation focuses on identity and the confusion many students are experiencing and how the gospel of Jesus addresses this with grace and truth. Jordan and their students read through our Identity book over 6 weeks and it made a huge impact on helping the students better understand what identity means and how we all live from a sense of identity, whether true or false – and why identity in Christ is the only source of eternal hope and peace.

Everyone listening to this podcast right now was once a child. Childhood is unavoidable on the journey to adulthood. But none of us got through our childhoods unscathed. And some of the residue of that continues to affect us now as adults.
Today we have back with us Dr. Eddie Capparucci to talk about his inner child therapy model and a new resource he has co-authored for women who struggle with love and sex addiction. Eddie’s model is based on the premise that we all have core emotional triggers that impact our inner child based on past wounds, and in order for us to heal and mature we must address these triggers by understanding our inner child and not simply ignoring our past.
In our conversation, Eddie defines the inner child model and highlights the 10 specific “inner children” for women to understand in order to heal and recover from love and sex addiction.

Wed, 15 Nov 2023 - 696 - Helping Men Navigate Between Logic and Emotion
Men, I’m really excited to bring you today’s program because Stephen and I are going to provide you with some VERY practical help for understanding how to navigate between logic and emotions – and why engaging emotions is essential for maturity.
Generally, the majority of men we work with in our ministry are very comfortable when communicating logic and solving problems, but very uncomfortable and unfamiliar with communicating emotion. This often results in them becoming stunted or stuck in their relational skills, especially in marriage.
Today, Stephen and I will share with you a story of one man’s journey to get unstuck when it comes to sharing his emotions and the 2-channel system he developed to help with that process. We are hopeful that this conversation will enlighten you and give you the confidence to work on becoming more skilled in emotional sharing and listening.

Wed, 08 Nov 2023 - 695 - Self-Care and Rest for Wives Healing from Betrayal Trauma
For over 10 years we have helped wives heal from sexual betrayal trauma. One aspect of this healing process that simply should not be overlooked is the need for self-care and simply rest.
Today’s guest is Christy Jones Jackson. She is the founder and director of The Guest House Project, a non-profit ministry that helps women find hope after betrayal. Christy shares some of her own story and how vital it was that in the middle of her failing marriage due to betrayal a friend took her away for a weekend to pray with her, make her eat, give her gifts, read her Scripture, made her laugh, and reminded her who she was. It was a pivotal moment in her journey to healing and planted the seeds for what would eventually become The Guest House Project.

Proverbs 27:17 says “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” This idea of helping each other get sharper is so common in our work with men, especially in our Gateway to Freedom 3-day workshops. Guys form a bond that is deep and meaningful.
In this episode, Stephen and I talk about what can men hope to be saying 6-12 months after they have begun their honest journey toward greater integrity. These insights are coming directly from other men who have traveled this journey and what they discovered on the way. The hope is that these men can help other men to press on and finish well.

Wed, 25 Oct 2023 - 693 - How to Be at Peace in Aloneness
What is the difference between alone and lonely? Is there a healthy aspect to being alone and understanding who you are by yourself?
In today’s episode, Stephen and I dialogue about the topic of aloneness and why we need to be okay with ourselves – by ourselves. We also talk about the difference between aloneness as a healthy thing and isolation as an unhealthy thing.
We explore some questions that help us better understand how to embrace aloneness, such as:
What scares you most about being alone? What does it feel like in your body when you are alone? What could you do that would be healthy when you are alone? It’s okay to be by yourself. We hope this episode helps you navigate this topic with confidence and hope.

Childhood sexual abuse is not something that only happens to girls. Boys are victims, too. Most of these boys grow up to be men who find it terribly difficult to talk about these experiences.
In today’s episode, our guest is Dr. James Reeves, founding pastor of City on a Hill Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and the creator of the Fearless Series for women and men. Dr. Reeves shares how he got involved in helping abuse victims and why the church needs to be a safe place for such victims to heal and belong.
The Fearless Series for Men addresses childhood sexual, physical, and emotional abuse men have experienced and the hope possible for not just surviving trauma but finding true healing and fulfillment through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Wed, 11 Oct 2023 - 691 - Church Ambassador Network (with Daniel Degner)
Today’s episode may be the most unique program we’ve ever done on our podcast. We are diving into the space of politics and government, and how Christians can engage their local and state elected officials in gospel-centered ways.
Our guest is Daniel Degner. He is the director of the Church Ambassador Network for the Wisconsin Family Council. He is going to help us understand the fallacy of “separation of Church and State” and how we can do amazing ministry at the intersection of our Christian faith and government. This conversation is critical as we look forward to elections in 2024, not to promote a specific political party, but instead to educate and inspire you on how to build relationships with elected officials for the sake of the gospel and the good of your community. It makes a difference that your local government officials know who you are and what you believe about God’s design for sex and life.

Wed, 04 Oct 2023 - 690 - Helping the Next Generation Navigate Healthy Relationships
When many parents look across the cultural landscape they can become fearful, especially seeing the trajectory of sexual brokenness and confusion. But is there hope in this midst of the fear?
Our guest today, Barb Winters, believes there is. She is the founder of Hopeful Mom and author of the bookSexpectations: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Healthy Relationships.
In our conversation, she highlights key principles and practices from her book that will help parents (and any caregivers of young people) know how to talk about sexual topics and struggles with clarity, confidence, and hope.
Our ministry’s director of training, John Fort, even provided an endorsement of this book, saying, “Sexpectationsis a calming voice to parents in the midst of the chaos of trying to talk with older kids about sex… I appreciate how Barb goes beyond just ‘what to say to kids’ but includes work that we need to do as parents throughout this process. Sexpectations is an emotional rock for parents to stand on as they navigate these waters.”

Fri, 22 Sep 2023 - 688 - Emotional Safety in Marriage
When a husband betrays his wife’s trust through sexual acting out, this can cause feelings of deep insecurity to arise in a wife – even to the point of feeling unsafe.
In today’s episode, we will discuss the topic of emotional safety in marriage and why this is often befuddling to many husbands (and men in general) and offer a few ideas on how to create safer emotional spaces for the healing and restoration of marriages broken by sexual betrayal. (As a side note, this topic is helpful foranymarriage!)
This conversation was sparked by a conference Stephen went to by Focus on the Family. They built this topic around the book by authors Paul, Burbee, and Arnzen, entitledRestoring Hope: An Integrative Approach to Marital Therapy(link below).

I’m so excited about today’s program. I have written a new book that was released this month. It is entitledGrace-Based Transformation: The 3-Stage Journey to Wholeness in Christ.
In this episode, I share what Grace-Based Transformation is and why I wrote this book after 20 years of full-time ministry. It’s really the book I’ve always wanted to write.
We will explore what I call the Transformation Pathway and highlight the three key stages on it: Heal -> Grow -> Share. These form the primary indicators of a Christian’s progress.
So, if you would like greater freedom, deeper joy, and a more effective impact in your life, I invite you to listen in.

Wed, 06 Sep 2023 - 685 - Making Sense of the Sexual Revolution
How did we get to where we are today when it comes to sexual brokenness, confusion, and outright rebellion against God’s design for sex?
In this episode, our guest is Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, who is the founder of the Ruth Institute, an interfaith international coalition to defend the family and build a Civilization of Love.
Our conversation was inspired after I read Dr. Morse’s book,The Sexual State: How Elite Ideologies are Destroying Lives and Why the Church Was Right All Along. In this book, she provides a timeline that breaks down the sexual revolution into its component parts so that people can better understand how we have reached our current period and respond to it with grace and truth.
Dr. Morse shares the three big ideas of the sexual revolution:
- The Contraceptive Ideology – Society should do everything possible to separate sex and babies. The Divorce Ideology – Society should do everything possible to separate both sex and babies from marriage. The Gender Ideology – Men and women are completely interchangeable; the “idea” of self is more important than the body.

Wed, 30 Aug 2023 - 684 - Helping Pastors Recover from Sexual Brokenness
Pastors are regular men in a position of great responsibility. They are not immune to sexual temptations. How can the church help pastors recover from sexual sin and strongholds?
In this episode, our guest is Robert Posner. Robert and his wife, Judy, are the founders of 2416 Ministries, a ministry based on Proverbs 24:16, which states, “Though a righteous man falls seven times, he will get up, but the wicked will stumble into ruin.” Robert shares his own story as a pastor who fell into sexual sin and his own journey of recovery and growth.
We also talk about some of the unique challenges that pastors face due to their often isolated and elevated position. And what pastors can do to guard themselves against sexual misconduct, heal from sexual brokenness, and enter safe places for help in breaking free from sexual struggles and strongholds.

Over the past 20 years, I have heard countless stories of sexual brokenness. Many of these individuals held these stories in secret for years, even decades. They all believed the lie that no one would love them if their secrets came out. But healing and discovering one’s true identity and worth only exist in the light.
In today’s bonus episode, we have Randy and Cynthia Lail here to share a very powerful story of abuse, addiction, satanic strongholds, infidelity, and the matchless power and grace of Jesus Christ.
If you think no one could understand your brokenness or that you would be utterly rejected if the truth came out, please listen to this episode. There is no one whose story is beyond the reach of God’s rescue and transforming power.

In the best of circumstances, marriage is hard work. But when a couple has histories of brokenness and unresolved pain, it’s even more challenging.
Today’s guests are Travis and Adelle Graham, founders of The Noble Marriage, a ministry dedicated to helping struggling marriages discover true intimacy.
Travis and Adelle share their broken pasts (even though raised in Christian homes) and how that affected their marriage; how it led them both to build false images about themselves and their relationship. Eventually, their masks were removed in favor of pursuing an authentic relationship with Christ and each other. This is their story and a message of hope for couples wondering if their struggling relationship can be redeemed.

We all have a story. And stories are one of the things we value greatly in our ministry. Why? Because it is through our stories that we connect and discover and learn.
Today’s guest is Neil Getzlow and he has quite a story to tell. He was raised in a Jewish home but eventually left his family tradition in preference of atheism. Along the way, he developed a porn and sex addiction, which made him miserable. Eventually, God chased him down and invited him to stop running and instead find rest and freedom in Christ.
Neil shares his experience of needing to learn how to be alone as a kid, how he was introduced to porn, the effect of his parent’s divorce, and how he came to believe that love and sex were basically the same things. He also shares the radical way in which God broke him out of his secret addiction and led him to a place of truth, grace, and hope.

Today’s episode is getting back to the basics of living a life of sexual integrity. Stephen Cervantes and I have been working with men desiring greater integrity for over 20 years, and we know that a life of integrity is not static. You must be on a daily growth mission to mature.
In our conversation, we share some of our personal growth tips and many other insights we have seen that help men get on a growth mission and discover their God-sized purpose in life.
A great next step in your pursuit of greater integrity is ourGateway to Freedom 3-day intensive workshop. This Friday-Sunday event will help you get down to the roots of your unwanted sexual behaviors and provide practical, powerful direction for living each day with integrity and purpose.
